'Tis the season

Update: Another DP30 interview with Jake and Jake's HFA acceptance speech below:

Thanks to Gyllencrazy for the find!

That's right, folks. It's the most wonderful time of the year - for Hollywood. The awards deluge has begun with a trickle. The Hollywood Film Awards were presented in LA on Monday night. And Jaake Gyllenhaal received the award for Supporting Actor for Prisoners.

Jake's Prisoners costar, Viola Davis, presented him with the award.

Video of Jake's arrival. And more video. First up, Viola presenting Jake's award:

Hope that one's coming. Here's Jake on the red carpet:

Hope we'll get to see a video of the awards presentation for Jake.

In the meantime, Everest runs into obstacles:

As for the other Everest, the one that Working Title and Universal are making? That project also has weathered adversity, with Emmett/Furla Films recently exiting as co-financier. EFF made the deals and were cash flowing the movie but backed out when the company and the filmmakers couldn’t come to terms on capping the budget. Working Title is working quickly to lock in a new co-financier to share the risk with Universal. The Deep helmer Baltasar Kormakur is directing. He still hopes to get underway in November with the mountain climbing disaster I told you in July had Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke attached to tell the harrowing story of the 1996 disastrous expedition to scale Mount Everest, when a sudden blinding storm hit. By the time it was all over, eight climbers died. The tale was first made famous by Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, his superb first-person account of being among the lucky ones to make it back down the mountain. This film will be sourced from various books and interviews with survivors.

I think we all prefer the old look.
But it's good to see Jake transform for a character. Ah, I love it when actors do that!

Jake Gyllenhaal Explains Gaunt Appearance, Weight Loss: My Character Was Hungry

US Weekly

Anonymous said...

Oh my goodness you would think an actor has never lost weight for a role before.

Clearly Jake is known a little bit more for those looks than his acting ability.

And of course, the weight loss is bringing out the crazies.

bobbyanna said...

Well, the weight loss is startling to people who haven't seen him. And he hasn't been out publically, or socializing since he's been in L.A., he's been working.

I can understand the reactions, since the media and a lot of the people, all in one place, saw him last night for the first time in a long time.

UltraViolet said...

It is annoying that it's such a hullabaloo, but not surprising, as Bobbyanna said. Added a few videos. We get to see part of Viola's presentation but none of Jake. Boo. Hopefully, that will be added.

Realist said...

I just want his diet plan, 20 pounds in less than 2 months?

Maybe its a good thing the delay in Everest filming is happening, that way he can gain the weight back slowly but I am sure it will be a lot of fun to eat to gain weight.

Monica said...

Uv, I sent you a message.

Jake's appearance is startling and I can understand the concern. He will get back to his old self soon!

I hope Everest gets back on track .

Looking forward to seeing the whole video of Jake receiving his award!

Vulture's 100 Most Valuable Stars of 2013:
#55 Jake Gyllenhaal
The Modest Movie Star
He’s found his niche in affordable, gritty thrillers.

Over the short decade-plus that he’s been a recognizable name, Jake Gyllenhaal’s career has gone through several incarnations: from the young star of coming-of-agers like October Sky and Donnie Darko, to the critics’ darling of The Good Girl and Brokeback Mountain, to the would-be action hero of Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time. But it’s really only in the last few years that Gyllenhaal really seems to have found his place as the lead of modestly budgeted, well-reviewed films like Source Code, End Of Watch and Prisoners.

None blew up the box office, but the films were all made at a price and likely turned healthy profits, and it seems that Gyllenhaal can still draw enough of an audience, especially abroad: End Of Watch aside, his films generally perform better internationally, with Prince Of Persia quietly making a quarter of a billion dollars away from American jeering. Gossip editors are more interested in him than studios seem to be (thank you, Taylor Swift!), but within his lower-budget wheelhouse, he has significant value. His mind-bending doppelganger film Enemy (directed by Prisoners’ Denis Villeneuve) recently had a mixed reception at Toronto, but he also has Nightcrawler coming (a crime thriller that he’s producing and which forced him to bow out of Into the Woods) and Everest, with Josh Brolin.

Compared to last year Jake has moved up 34 places in Vulture's ranking, though it's hard to tell what exactly has changed.

Hagen said...

It looks like I will get the chance to watch "Enemy" in a theater. The movie has finally found a distributor in Germany, as well as in Austria, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. On the other hand the Russian distributor has dropped it (Pathé International: Line-up at the American Film Market).

Hagen said...

We can nominate Jake as our favorite dramatic movie actor for the People's Choice Awards 2014.

Instagram said...

I don´t know if you know about this, but will be 2 movies about everest and, until now, with the same title: EVEREST.

1 is wth jake: "Everest," a movie about the deadly 1996 climbing season detailed in Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air."

2 another with Tom Hardy(or maybe not): Doug Liman’s Everest, the true story of George Mallory’s (fatal) Everest climb in 1924.

Interesting Vulture article, Hagen. Thanks for posting. It's true that not much has changed but it's nice that people recognize some things finally, like his overseas draw. It's about time someone pointed out that PoP was not a disaster at the international box office.

I could get annoyed by all the undeserving folks ahead of Jake on the list, but I'll take the high road. For now :)

People's Choice voting always seems so pointless, but I'll add the link to the post. Prisoners is also there in Drama.

Thanks, Instagram. I posted the link yesterday. It's worrisome that the financing is so sketchy.

Finally, big thanks to Gyllencrazy: There's a new DP30 interview with Jake, seemingly done at TIFF. I haven't watched it yet but it's in the post.

Thanks for the acknowledgment UV, it's such a rarity nowadays :-)

Enemy will compete in the Narrative Features Competition at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival http://tinyurl.com/o25987d

"The story unfolds like an elaborate puzzle. Every time we see the Toronto sky it is a monotonous grey, which is apt as there is nothing in this intricate picture that is black and white. Can we believe anything Jake Gyllenhaal says? Or is the only truth to be found in the trio of women that lighten the picture, Adam’s girlfriend (Mélanie Laurent), his mother (Isabella Rossellini) and Anthony’s pregnant wife (Sarah Gadon)?

Keeping with the twin theme, this is the director’s second film of 2013. The other was the hugely successful Prisoners, which featured Gyllenhaal as a police officer trying to find abducted children. The chances are we will see this partnership again.

“As men, we are having the same identity crisis,” says Villeneuve. “We were asking the same questions about identity, about the women in our lives. We felt close to each other. I’m deeply inspired by him.”

Updated the post with Jake's acceptance speech.

GC, all credit is due!

I love the DV/JG bromance. It's hilarious. And Jake's speech just adds to the saga.

It's fun to think of how it will be revisited for Enemy.

When will Enemy be released in the US? Will it be in theaters?

In the US "Enemy" will be released on VOD first (Variety: DirecTV expects to debut “Enemy” in early 2014, with seven-day rentals for early-release VOD titles to be priced at between $10.99 and $12.99). 30 days later the film will get a theatrical release, but the distributor (A24) hasn't set a release date yet.

"Prisoners" has crossed the $100 million mark world-wide.

"Enemy" brilliant enigmatic thriller that sinks you in its spooky mood.. Jake Gyllenhaal brings a strong performance in the film

Good news about Prisoners:)

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for all the Enemy info, Hagen. I'm happy folks will be able to see the movie through VOD. I wonder what the release dates will have to do with any possible awards. Not Oscars, but I thin the movie could do well in something like the Independent Spirit Awards if it got the right push.

More good tweets:

#Enemy Mesmerising, intense & thought-provoking. Fantastic cinematography. Powerful central performance from Jake Gyllenhaal #ADFF13

Enemy is a trippy, abstract and moody film about a man who faces his exact doppelganger. Jake Gyllenhaal excels in dual roles. #ADFF13

There have been tweets of Jake in NYC and airports. But he is either back in LA or never left or this is mistaken identity:

Jake Gyllenhaal is sitting next to us at Real Food Daily. Guys this is NOT a drill!!!

The German distributor of "Enemy" (Capelight Pictures) has announced today that the film will be released in theaters in spring 2014. Yay!

Some new pictures from the set of "Nightcrawler" on IHJ.

El País has published an interview with Jake: Soy una especie de budista y creo que escogemos a nuestros padres

Interesting theory. LOL

Jake wanted to play Detective Loki just like Richard Burton would have done it. He would like to make movies with comic situations, but maybe not so much straightforward comedies. Corresponding to his buddhist belief he thinks the way is the goal. So he doesn't care that much about results, that is the success or the failure of his movies.
