Police promotions

We have a date for Jake Gyllenhaal's appearance on Inside the Actors Studio. The show will air on 9/19, a day before Prisoners opens in the U.S.

His first time on the series, the actor discussed his films "Brokeback Mountain," "October Sky," "Donnie Darko," "End of Watch," and the upcoming "Prisoners."

In addition, he discussed his famous Hollywood family and revisited his relationship with late friend and "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Heath Ledger.

From Bravo:

The star of films such as Brokeback Mountain, October Sky and Donnie Darko will soon grace the stage of Inside the Actors Studio! That's right, Hollywood hotshot Jake Gyllenhaal is James Lipton's next guest, and true to style, Lipton leaves no stone unturned.

The interview covers everything from what it's like to work with Hollywood stars like Anne Hathaway, IAS alums Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow; the inside scoop on Gyllenhaal's Bar Mitzvah; and what it was like being raised in a Hollywood family. And Lipton of course spends time discussing Gyllenhaal's Oscar-nominated performance in "Brokeback Mountain," and his relationship with his late co-star Heath Ledger.

In April, we heard about a photoshoot Jake did for Chinese Elle for Men. It is apparently out, according to this http://www.isewhite.com/ise_white.asp?page=49 who worked on the shoot.

And here it is:

Jake's a detective in Prisoners, something Officer Brian Taylor aspires to. I found a new/old interview for End of Watch from Canal+:

We had seen a cropped version of that Elle shoot photo before. Here's the tweet:

Our new Jake Gyllenhaal feature and cover out In Elle men China!

We may have to rely on LikeMonaLisa to track down this one. (The mag is online but I don't see the feature/cover there.)

I am so looking forward to Jake on The Actors Studio! Sounds like we will be hearing something a bit different than the usual talk show gab.
Thanks for finding and posting the old/new EOW interbiew, that poster is really cool!

I've seen a few spots for Prisoners, really intense.

My pleasure UltraViolet – when I saw a definitive date for Actors Studio I rushed to post it here.

Hopefully the Elle Men China cover will surface online. It has to.

Jake is also on the cover of GQ Syle - Germany.
It's an old photo, looks like one of the 2012's "Details" photoshoot, but the interview seems new. He talks about money – his lack of interest for $ in choosing roles – and Hollywood "wars" – the battle for good parts. I can barely speak German, so we need help from a German fan on this one.

That fan-made poster for "End of Watch" is right on the money!

Thanks for another great post, UV. I'm really enjoying the larger photos, too.

Oops. Meant to say, Jon Stewart will be returning to The Daily Show on September 3rd. I hope he & Jake have a chance to get together soon. That's always a fun appearance.

Mary said...

Just read that Jake will be on The Queen Latifah Show some time on the week it premiers Sept 16 didn't say which day just that he was one of the stars scheduled for the first week along with Jaime Foxx. Can't wait for the ITAS to be on.

An Enemy and Prisoners are not in the lineup of Telluride, but THR says it will still add new movies:
The festival, which traditionally doesn't unveil its slate until attendees are already heading for the Rockies, also reserves several spots for TBA surprises. And while those titles aren't revealed in advance, the betting is that they will include Steve McQueen's civil war story 12 Years a Slave and Denis Villeneuve's thriller Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Had breakfast next to Jake Gyllenhaal yesterday. My bf even touched him while eating his omelette so I can say I kinda like NYC.

UltraViolet said...

Tried to see if Queen Latifah's show will tape in LA. I think she lives there and not NY these days, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the tip, Mary.

I hope he'll do TDS too, Bobbyanna!

Thanks for the GQ Germany tip, Translator. I bet Sasha will have it translated in no time. Too bad they didn't get new photos.

Extra, I love those minimalist posters, and this is a great one.

Oh, and IHJ got the Elle cover. I added it to the post :)

Monica, interesting. I wish Enemy were playing there instead, but I guess it has to be TO for the premiere.

Prisoners seems to be getting good twitter buzz. When twitter works, that is.

I wonder if it's the Queen L show that is looking for the big Jake fan, FP.

Also added a photo of Jake from yesterday, just walking around. Found it on People.

@likemonalisa: "Enemy" is set to be released in Hong Kong on October 31st (?). (I don't know if that site is a reliable source though.)

FP said...

Hello wise Hagen!I hope not to have to move to Hong Kong to see Enemy, or an Enemy, or as it is now called, this movie has changed name more often than P. Diddy! :-)
I can not wait to see Jake all dressed in leather, and I want to know what that spider is about!! lol

UltraViolet said...

Too much to keep up with!

Thanks for those stills, Hagen. Are they from a site for Enemy or something? (She asks hopefully...)

More of a look at GermanQ. I think that translates to Looker or Headturner. Basically, it says fashion isn't important to him, so they talked about money? Not sure the translation is correct.

From FB:

My last day in New York and Jake Gyllenhaal kindly passes me my umbrella. Trip complete, nothing can top that - time to come home!

From twitter:

Off to see my second Jake Gyllenhaal movie in 24 hours. U can decide if that's a good thing or not. #TIFF13

He's an entertainment reporter, it looks like. I wonder if any word on Enemy will leak out.

Also added some more from Bravo on ITAS to the post.

James Lipton posted this on his FB page:

Looking forward to Jake Gyllenhaal as a guest on the show on my birthday, Sept. 19th. Who recalls Jake's debut on the silver screen?

Maybe we can get a few more votes for Jake in this poll.

And from twitter:

For those following, the big reviews today at Telluride will be Reitman’s Labor Day & Coppola’s Palo Alto. Tomorrow, Gravity. Rest are TBAs

@DavidPoland The great TBA is Prisoners the best studio financed character centered thriller since Zodiac and No country.

Jackman and Gyllenhaal gala do career best work. If only Villeneuve were an American it would be a total Hollywood victory.

That sounds promising!

And I think Enemy did screen in Toronto but I haven't heard anything else about it.:

bobbyanna said...

(waves to Chica!) I'm getting very excited with all this positive feedback. Always good times when Jake has a film coming out...or two... : ). Denis Villeneuve is getting some great positive comments too. So who's David Fincher again???

UltraViolet said...

It is nice to hear, Bobbyanna. Though I'm always a little skeptical of people saying something is Jake's "career best." Not that I think he won't be good. It just makes me wonder if they've seen or appreciated some of his other roles.

On a separate note, I think End of Watch just opened in Japan. I kept seeing links to Japanese articles about it, and then I saw this photo. It's not listed in the top box office results for the past couple of weekends, but who knows if it was a wide release or if it even was just released.

Thanks, chica - I think you're right, it is LA for Queen Latifah's show.

Hi FP! I wonder, if the spider will end up on the cutting room floor. The version of "Enemy", that will be screened at TIFF, is a bit shorter (90 minutes) than Pathé reported in its catalog (95 minutes).

Are they from a site for Enemy or something?

Hi, UV! I found the stills on the website of the Spanish distributor Alfa Pictures.

According to AwardsWatch "Prisoners" will be screened today at Telluride.

Yesterday I bought that "GQ Style" issue (which looks more like an illustrated book than a magazine). I will translate the interview on the weekend, if no one else will beat me to it.

Deadline

Also at the Telluride Film Festival picnic I ran into Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve and its producers Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Kira Davis. The trio were anxiously awaiting the festival’s reaction to their incredibly tense thriller. I had speculated pic would be a surprise entry here and indeed it as now been officially announced as one of Friday night’s screenings. (The festival also confirmed Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years A Slave will screen Friday, ratcheting up the Oscar contender wattage considerably). I am told Prisoners stars Hugh Jackman is in Japan promoting Wolverine and Jake Gyllenhaal is starting a new film and also couldn’t make the trek to Telluride. But both will be at the Toronto premiere next week along with the rest of the impressive cast. Villeneuve is no stranger to Telluride and was last here in 2010 for his Oscar-nominated Incendies.

Jake's comment on "Enemy" in the interview with "Total Film" is pretty telling:

Jake, you've also worked with Denis on "Enemy", which looks very different to "Prisoners" ...

Jake: So different. Can I compare it to anything? Fuck. No. I don't know. It's definitely not conventional in any way. It's a very unconscious, almost dream-like film. ... I don't know if I would even call it a film. It's really a crazy experiment. I think the viewing of it will be an experiment!

LOL

The LA Times calls "Enemy" an elliptical movie about identity.

Wow, that Variety review is pretty amazing! Love it! Thank you, monica. THR review barely mentions Jake but they loved the movie too. I hope we'll hear similar for Enemy.

UltraViolet said...

Finally Jake gets the props he deserves. From Variety:

Loki, we are told, has never failed to solve a case, though this is at odds with the man’s solemn demeanor, his haunted gaze and the elaborate tattoos jutting out from his collar suggesting reserves of private rage. Compare this to the eager-beaver murder sleuth Gyllenhaal played in David Fincher’s “Zodiac” and the full breadth of his impressive range immediately comes into focus.

Anonymous said...

12 years the Slave appears to be star of the all the film festivals thus far and no one has really seen it. It was sold out at tonight. I think Prisoners will take a back seat as too many other films are getting way more buzz.

And Hugh's people are putting him out there and what buzz does happen for the film will be for him and thankfully Denis (which is good for Jake).

I am just being realistic, I don't think Jake will get the praise and credit he deserves for his performance in Prisoners except from the critics who know when an actor truly gives a great performance. Its easier to play the fearful angry Dad.

UltraViolet said...

Good god, anon. We have two review, both of which praise Jake's performance. Who knows if he'll get any awards play? Can't we just be happy for the evening?

Prisoners is wound about as tight as they come. Glacially paced for major tension. Too long at 158 minutes but a surprising studio thriller.

Kristopher Tapley ‏@kristapley 8m
Jackman fantastic. Gyllenhaal solid. Villeneuve is a great formal filmmaker despite bloat in this and Incendies.

UltraViolet said...

BTW, anon, I don't disagree. Hugh is going to get all the kudos. But Jake needs to be in a hit. And if it's a critical hit as well, even better.

As Kris Tapley's tweets go, probably many will go. But it's sad to jump to such negativity right out of the gate.

Also, pick a name.

bobbyanna said...

I'm honestly thrilled that Denis is getting such accolades. It bodes well for his collaboration with Jake.

It's true that Jackman's and Paul Dano's characters have lots of opportunities to "act," but it's also obvious Jake really comes thru beautifully. He more than holds his own.

This movie sounds like it's going to really "happen," and I'm just delighted. Didn't realize Mark Wahlberg is an executive producer for this movie, but then I remembered the writer did Contraband with Wahlberg.

Prisoners review:In Contention

UltraViolet said...

This was in the Deadline comments:

I’ve seen “Prisoners” and it’s pretty grim stuff that’s hard to describe as “entertaining” yet powerful and impressive. (And no, I don’t work for Alcon/WB) JG and HJ are both great, as are Terence Howard, Paul Dano and Melissa Leo. Could all be contenders.

I saw on twitter that almost all the stars, including Brad Pitt, are there for 12 Years A Slave. So the Prisoners hype will be dimmed. Probably explains that bullshit excuse for why Jake couldn't be there. Hopefully the buzz will remain strong.

UltraViolet said...

I'm happy to hear that Prisoners is a long movie. I hope they don't cut it too much, or at all.

UltraViolet said...

It does seem like a PR mistake to have had the screening on the same night as 12 Years. Hopefully not a sign of misguided marketing moves to come.

Neganon will rightly point out that people are already cataloging the great reviews for 12 Years.

Saw this from The Playlist:

"Prisoners" is intense, brooding and visceral. Review in the AM.

any chance at nominations for Jackman or Deakins?

All the talent is terrific, in particular Gyllenhaal, Villeneuve, Deakins, Jackman, & Davis. We'll see how it lands...

As someone on a Hugh Jackman board said, all the hand-wringing over awards makes it feel like anything less doesn't matter.

No one wants to see Jake in awards contenders more than I do. But it's not the only measure of success.

UltraViolet said...

That is an appropriate tweet, FP. Hope more people will have that realization.

Same negative Anon, just call me negative nelly said...

"But Jake needs to be in a hit.'

This seems to be the only thing that matters to you UV. Jake having a number 1 film last year with EOW was brush aside by this board. All I was trying to say it don't set Jake up to fail by your standards as his fans. Its seems if Jake's movies don't make 200 gazillon dollars or if he isn't nominated for an Oscar fans on this board and you in particular UV see him as a failure. Just admit it you want him to be a commercial success for yourselves not for him.

I just wish Jake's fans would stop measuring Jake's career by the box office and then have the nerve to get mad at Jake for being mentioned for roles that are guranteed to make money. Its called karma.

Monica said...

Wow loved the interview to Total film. It seems they have changed many things in the original script, which made me more excited.

Telluride: Surprise ‘Prisoners’ Rocks The Fest And Becomes Instant Oscar Contender
By PETE HAMMOND

Hyoebole at film festivals is to be expected BUT even with direct competition from Brad Pitt and the Coen Brothers, the reaction to the first public screening Friday night anywhere of director Denis Villenueve’s thrilling and penetrating drama, Prisoners at the 40th Annual Telluride Film Festival was completely unexpected and significant. This was a “surprise” screening (although I predicted it) and filled the 650 seat Herzog Theatre. For weeks some I spoke to thought on the basis of the trailer and more mainstream elements of the film that it was probably an unworthy commercial film that somehow snuck into the more tony environ of Telluride. Uh, no. This is a first class motion picture experience unlike any other that I , for one, have experienced in a long time. But it’s not an easy sell.

The applause was strong and early critical praise is over the moon. Pundits will have to add this Alcon production being released by Warner Bros on September 20th to the list of strong Oscar contenders this year. That is , if audiences and academy members can handle the intensity of this superbly directed and produced film that features career best performances , for sure, from Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman (okay, I liked Les Miz too a lot) plus a brilliant supporting cast including Melissa Leo going for another supporting win, Terence Howard, the great Viola Davis, Maria Bello and Paul Dano who goes through the ringer for his art. You can easily compare this gem to critically acclaimed pictures like Zodiac, Seven, Mystic River and any number of films in the genre. Director Villeneuve doesn’t shy away from the comparisons. He says he is a great admirer of David Fincher and Clint Eastwood. In fact one of his editors , Joel Cox, is an Eastwood regular.

Look, it’s not an easy sit but as Telluride’s Julie Huntsinger had planned to say in opening remarks before she was called away , “I’m sorry, and you’re welcome”. This was sweet music to the ears of Villeneuve who was here in Telluride with edgy indie films twice before including the Oscar nominated Foreign Language film, Incendies
I don’t think there’s a single laugh in the film , no relief. You are simply wrung out by the end. The title is appropriate. All the characters are prisoners in their own right. This is a major achievement, one I can see landing several significant Oscar nominations. The journey is just beginning for the film. Villeneuve gives much credit to the casting and his key stars. “If you cast someone like Jake Gyllenhaal you know he will invade the part totally and create something. My background is documentary. I am used to listening to life. The more I am doing fiction movies, the more I love actors and want to give them freedom there is nothing more exciting than to let chaos happen in front of the camera,” he said while adding he was also more impressed everyday with Jackman as well as Gyllenhaal. He said Jackman is an actor without ego
Johnson talked about the excitement he and Alcon felt over their Best Picture Oscar nomination and Best Actress win for Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side but said this reaction was an equal high.Kosove said it was exactly the film they wanted to make when they read the script and added some major actors (Ben Affleck among them I hear) passed because it was just too dark a place to visit. It’s early in the awards season but the emotional level of this film could put them all back in the race.

Holy shit!:)

UV I wanted to tell you how much I admire you and how grateful I am for life for the extraordinary work you do here, in the follow Jake and his career, from Hollywood mega budget movie to the small theater production through bad ass indie cop movie, always with the same zeal, honesty ,creativity, commitment and love.

UltraViolet said...
