EoW BTS

Update: Variety's SAG Awards coverage kicks off with Actors on Actors. Carey Mulligan gives her perspective on Jake as he made End of Watch:

I remember so vividly Jake's demeanor when he was preparing for "End of Watch." I have known him and regarded him as a dear friend for several years, and during that time I was very struck by some fundamental change in him. He was energized, he was completely present and he told me with such excitement about the work that he was doing to get ready for his next movie.

A large part of the work involved was observing protocol on the midnight shift with the LAPD. Both he and Michael Pena witnessed pretty tragic, unpleasant scenes that affected them both. His descriptions of the ride-alongs were charged not with voyeurism but with a profound respect for the policemen and women whom they were observing. His reinvigorated sense of perspective and humility was palpable. I sensed just how deep he had already gone, and that the experience was filling him in some new way. Not that Jake had ever taken work lightly -- quite the opposite -- but what was so distinct on this occasion was that this work was releasing him. He seemed more free, more alive and more comfortable in his skin than I had ever known him.

Watching Jake in "End of Watch," I saw all of that joyous freedom on the screen. His complete ease in scenes with the brilliant Michael Pena makes those moments wrap around you in all their infectious warmth, and pulls you into the car with them. Their comraderie is the most beautiful portrayal of friendship in the truest sense: absolute trust, love and unflinching loyalty.

It is a love story that broke my heart and Jake's work is fearless. He is not daunted by the intimacy of their relationship, the lightening fast emotional changes, the dichotomy of bravado and honesty or even a meticulously choreographed first dance at his wedding.

When he stood to speak at the closing of the movie, with such quiet grace, I realized I hadn't thought once of the Jake I know as my friend but only as the character he embodies in this wonderfully special movie.

End of Watch will be released January 22 on DVD. Here's hoping there's a lot more of stuff like this:

Especially the stuff around 9:30 :)

Bonus features include:

Fate with a Badge
In the Streets
Women on Watch
Watch Your Six
Honors
Deleted Scenes
Feature Commentary with Writer and Director David Ayer

Jake Gyllenhaal speaks to Joe Michalczuk about Cop thriller End of Watch from Joe Michalczuk on Vimeo.

That's the video to a radio interview I posted earlier.

Jake for the French:

What Jake learned:
In case you missed it, Anna Kendrick continues to sing Jake's praises: With a highly charged storyline and five different cameras, shooting the film wasn’t always easy, but again, Anna could only praise Jake’s professionalism. She added: "We were filming on five different cameras and you’d be in character for 12 hours a day. We all got really close really quickly which was lovely and Jake was always running around set making sure that everyone was ok. That was really impressive!"

Happy early birthday, Stefanie! That is a good present.

Quiet day out there! I'm digging out of a pile of work after a quick trip to New York this weekend. I saw the play on Saturday. Will make a post with my observations.

Just saw this on twitter:

just spotted jake gylenhaal at la colombe. he looked like a bum. still hot tho.
4:06 PM - 26 Nov 12

Fingers crossed for awards for EoW but I don't know if there are enough nominations to go around. I saw Lincoln over the weekend, and DDL was spectacular. Don't think anyone could argue with him winning another.

Looks like EoW didn't do blazing business in the UK. Not sure how many screens it was on:

StudioCanal opened End of Watch in the UK where the police thriller grossed $760,000 over the weekend.

From the NY Post:

SAVE the dates: Dec. 15, Champagne reception for something called “Awakened” with someone unseen lately, Sally Kirkland . . . Dec. 4, it’s Matt Damon in “Promised Land,” where they say he “grapples with” a small town . . . One who already saved a last week date was Jake Gyllenhaal in beard, hat and hoodie. At the Highline Ballroom, applauding K’Naan.

Cute, from Anderson Live blog:

1. What do you do at “Anderson Live”?
I am the Production Assistant for the Field Department here. Our department is responsible for everything that is filmed outside of the studio. I am the only PA for the department so I have a hand in a little bit of everything. My responsibilities range from research, pulling visual elements, setting up and breaking down equipment, gathering archival affiliate footage, coordinating shoot logistics, and much more.

2. What has been your favorite “Anderson Live” Season 2 moment?
When Jake Gyllenhaal came! I just absolutely adore him. He’s so sweet and I’ve been obsessed with him since I first saw him in Donnie Darko.

From a Norwegian article about Born to Run. Forgive the google translation:

At the time a new script. If everything goes according to plan, they start filming in January.

The upcoming Hollywood movie will probably act a lot about himself, according to McDougall.

- In the book, I almost invisible, but I know that Peter has plans to make the movie more about me than the way the book is written, he says.

If you play in the film?
- I do not know, but I would like my daughter to have a small role. She really looks like a small Tarahumara girl, so it would be really fun if she could be with, says McDougall.

But a great star is almost nailed on the cast list. It seems that the popular actor Jake Gyllenhaal plays in the movie.

- Cast No one is not finished yet, but it surprises me that no, he says McDougall.

- I'm really impressed with Jake. I got the opportunity to spend time with him and talked a lot with him. He's a great guy. Also he is-in-law to Peter.

In true Hollywood style
The three went together to Colorado to see a race. First experienced author Gyllenhaal as a typical Hollywood star, who walked around with sunglasses and caps to avoid being recognized.

- After one day he realized that this little place was no one he recognized. He told how awesome January found there was no paparazzi in it it will be a couple of people running away with cameras. Jake is quoted saying, "talking about the sun, so ..." but they had no idea who he was and gives mate straight to Jake and asks if he can take a picture of them with Chris McDougall, author says proudly.

- Only in this city, on this day, with odd ultra runners, something like happen. It is the best story, McDougall says, laughing.

A January start would seem to count Jake out.

UltraViolet said...

Going back to the Dave Poland video: I wish Poland had pushed Jake a little on the Zwick/L&OD question. Jake really didn't answer it, and I assume he has feelings about how it all turned out.

There were a few times I wish DP had interacted a bit more, but I guess the vibe of these interviews is more laid-back.

Anyone have a question or comment or part of the interview they liked or wished had been different?

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

I love what Carey had to day about Jake and EOW! It's fascinating to read how the movie effected him from someone who wasn't in the movie but as a friend.

I forgot about that running movie! And yeah it doesn't look like Jake will be available.

I loved the Poland interview overall even though Poland took a softball approach to the interview. Jake seemed relaxed and comfortable.

I think he was disappointed in how LAOD turned out. I thought he and Anne were fine had great chemistry but the script was all over the place and that hurt the film overall.

bobbyanna said...

UV, I'll admit I am glad Jake is busy in January, hopefully too busy to do the running movie. ; )

Agree on Silver Linings but hopefully Lincoln and Les Mis will sweep the Oscars and leave Silver Linings in the cold. Still ticked at O Russell for not fighting for Nailed.

I still believe Sally Field will get best actress although most critics have given best actress to overrated Jennifer Lawrence.

Happy for Matthew M too.

Rachel said...

Anonymous said...

Hagen said...

Roman Vasyanov's cinematography is highly controversial, but not exactly the best one for my taste.

I've got the feeling that Michael Peña wouldn't have been nominated without Jake's ambition during the whole project. I think Jake rather than Michael was the driving force when they prepared for "End of Watch". It's nice that Jake's a true team player, but it feels a bit odd that Michael's performance is acknowledged, but not Jake's one.

On the other hand I'm not really thrilled that Jake emphasizes again and again that he strives to be an uncompromising artist neglecting the commercial aspect of his profession. For that reason I don't feel bad about this small setback for Jake's artistic ego. The Independent Spirit Award was probably his best chance to be nominated for an award.

UltraViolet said...

I would like to hear more about the whole Nailed scenario. Not sure what happened. But it doesn't seem like there's anything more DOR could have done.

I'm bummed because I want Jake to be a participant in the whole awards season. I knew the Oscars were a long shot, but it would have been fun to see him at the ISAs for the movie or for his performance in EoW.

Having seen SLP, I don't understand the hoopla. BC is good in it. But the movie isn't good. And it's a shame they took the slots that could have been given to Jake/EoW or other small movies.

UltraViolet said...

AAA, other people have gotten the letter. I don't think I have, but i tend not to open all the mail the Roundabout sends. I'll be sad if I threw away Jake's letter!

There's a clearer copy on WDW.

UltraViolet said...

Hagen, I think you're exaggerating the amount of times Jake talks about not wanting to be commercial, a claim that I'm sure he's exaggerating.

I don't have any doubt that Jake would love to be in a big, commercial movie. And I think an award nomination for this wouldn't have been a hindrance to that happening.

I agree that it's a shame MP's performance is lauded over Jake's. In this case, MP got the benefit of going as supporting instead of lead.

Monica said...

I still believe Sally Field will get best actress although most critics have given best actress to overrated Jennifer Lawrence.

Sally Field is going for best supporting actress.
Jessica Chastain is currently favorite to win the best actress. She is receiving high praise for her performance in ZDT, and for many she's the movie.

Independent Spirit Awards rules:

Board fixed the budget ceiling at $20 million in 2006.

SILVER LININGS budget is $23m+.

I hope DOR and Jake work together in another film.

Scott said...

I read somewhere last week Sally was for best actress Monica. But of course pardon me if I am wrong. Jessica is sort late to the game and the hype. I like Jessica but Anne will win best supporting so that makes me happy.

Anonymous said...

I believe only those who made a donation to the Roundabout Theater got that letter.

bobbyanna said...

Bummer! I am so,so disappointed for Jake, even while I'm very happy Michael got recognized.

I have to say, I've rarely seen a film where the performances were so inextricably intertwined. How can you separate one from the other. Michael's performance depended on Jake's.

I certainly don't agree with Silver Linings Playbook getting nominations it clearly wasn't eligible for.

Monica, I read that too, that Sally Fields and Anne Hathaway would both be nominated for supporting roles.

Monica said...

Roger Ebert

Jake Gyllenhaal's image-transforming work as a very tough cop in David Ayer's "End of Watch" may help the film win a Best Picture slot, and Michael Peña is no less effective as his partner in a dangerous Los Angeles police district. They forge a relationship during a series of brilliantly-staged action sequences.

Is Anne Thompson from Indiewire any influential? She prized Jake's performance very much.
I mean maybe she isn't influential as R. Erbert but still.

Siskel fan said...

"Ebert is very influential and i hope he really talks up EOW and Jake[s performance."

I don't believe Roger is as influential as he used to be, I don' think he ever had the "pull" with oscar members.

But how does the Spirit Awards justify allowing Silver Linings to even be in the running? Of course the subtraction of SL does not mean an automatic nom for Jake or EOW.

Monica said...

But how does the Spirit Awards justify allowing Silver Linings to even be in the running?

Silver Linnings is a movie of Harvey Weinstein. I think Harvey will say that the film cost just 20 million.

Of course the subtraction of SL does not mean an automatic nom for Jake or EOW.

exactly. was only a possibility.

Anonymous said...

Jake would have get the nom not because SLP it is not an Indie movie, but because Jake is very better than Cooper and one than the motors of the film and one of the motives for which this very special movie has been made, he has also put his money in this project.

Thanks Monica, wow so much?
indeed I didn't believe that it cost more than 15/20.

Siskel said...

"Silver Linnings is a movie of Harvey Weinstein. I think Harvey will say that the film cost just 20 million."

Isn't The Master also a Weinstein film? Weinstein does make good movies but his name is putting a "stink" on the films from his "independent studio".

Anonymous said...

Yes The Master is a Weinstein movie.Geez he doesn't want to lose nothing this year!

Anonymous said...

The Master is overrated, audiences hated it.

Monica said...

scott, the master is of harvey too, but the cost of it is too high for the independent spirit awards. and it unfortunately has lost buzz.

He is no longer on the list for the best picture and director. Only actors and other categories.
It's a film that split. Sasha Stone said it is too good for the Oscars.

Unfortunately I have not seen.

Harvey also has Django Unchained, a film that will be finalized on Friday.

Scott said...

"Geez he doesn't want to lose nothing this year!"

If the Oscars were ran like the US presidential election, Weinstein would be Romney with high hopes and ready to spend any amount of money to win.

Anonymous said...

I saw The Master in a preview open to public at a film festival in my country, and the word was, great performances from the actors, weak and inconclusive plot in the second part, and it has also been beaten from a beautiful Korean film of Kim ki duk

Scott said...

" Django Unchained"

Maybe Leo will get an Oscar nom, although I saw a tv spot or some show had a rough trailer or at least I hope it was a rough trailer because it seemed to be parody of a western. Jaime I love you but it's not the same as Will Smith in a holster.

Anonymous said...

I heard great things on Django. And sincerely Leo deserves a nom and even a victory to the Oscars, I never understood why he has always been snobbed from the Academy.

Scott said...

I think this year had great films with great casts especially in the best actor cat, Jake's supporting cast was not as famous as the other films which says alot about the success of EOW.

I think the Oscars will do another big films with multiple big names this year which is unfortunate for EOW and other small films
(non Weinstein of course).

Like UV said, Oscar is probably not in Jake's future until late 2013 when is nominated twice for best actor and best supporting actor. There I said it, it's out in the universe and it will stick.

Anonymous said...

Iit needs to say that DDL, is dreadfully equal to Abe Lincoln, and if he will win it's more than deserved and no one can say a word.

UltraViolet said...

The Master is not very good, certainly not "too good for the Oscars." That's just silliness. SLP is contrived and inauthentic and completely predictable.

It's a shame Harvey and company had to do a poer grab for the ISAs when everyone knows they are going to get a bucketload of Oscar nominations.

I don't know if Ebert was ever an Oscar influencer. But it's still great to read.

I'm afraid the domino effect will take over, and Jake will miss out on other smaller awards. It would b nice if the Golden Globes nominated him, as they separate musical/comedy roles, so BC and Hugh Jackman will be in a different category.

Anonymous said...

I'm afraid the domino effect will take over

Damn UV I have the same fear.

However Jake has shown once more his talent and value, and this time they cannot ignore his great performance, perhaps it won't bring prizes but a lot of respect and opportunity yes.

UltraViolet said...

Yes, I hope this brings him more respect and opportunities both big and small.

Like the HitFix take:

Loser: David Ayer and Jake Gyllenhaal
Michael Pena deservedly earned his first Spirit Award nod for a fantastic performance in "End of Watch," but what about screenwriter/director David Ayer and star Jake Gyllenhaal? "Watch" was a critic's favorite and a major indie hit. It was independently produced at just $7 million and grossed almost $40 million. Moreover, you expanded the best male lead category to six nods and Gyllenhaal still didn't get in? Embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

Ultra Violet these words of HitFix are a balm on my wounds, thanks:)

"Embarrassing"
it is really the proper word.

Monica said...

thanks for the link, uv.

Silver Linings is the favorite movie of Jeffrey Wells. Because of this, he tried to put down Lincoln and is now on a mission to put down Les Miserables.
He has not seen Les Mis.

Hagen said...

I wonder how Jake feels about the fact that the "Independent Spirit Awards" ignored him, if he just shrugs it off or if he's a bit frustrated: This year there are six nominees for best actor in a leading role, one more than usual. Matthew McConaughey has been nominated twice. Jake never devoted more time for a role, the movie attracted quite a lot of viewers. Of course, not every actor can be nominated, but it still looks a bit like a rejection.

The Golden Globes are the best chance for comedies to garner some nominations. For dramas the field is nearly as competitive as with the Academy Awards.

Anonymous said...

I hope and I believe Jake has not made the film for "Independent Spirit Awards" This movie is really something, that can also put aside from MM and his double nomination.

Anonymous said...

i'm sooooooooo depressed about the "Independent Spirit Awards" thing. it's totally unfair!

Likemonalisa

Scott said...

I think one poster had it correct on the Hitflix comment page, they didn't like EOW as a film but could not ignore it as a whole. Also Spirit is becoming more and more like Oscars, a little bit tainted. Gritty police dramas are not as artistic as movies about child lovers or a slick romantic comedy about a crazy man and a body obsessed young female (although both have been done before).

I think it was a more of a snub of the film and to keep EOW off other awards radar. It will be a domino effect but I also hope it will anger some people against Weinstein and hopefully all his films will be shut out during awards season, nominated yes but no wins (again).

bobbyanna said...

"It's a shame Harvey and company had to do a poer grab for the ISAs when everyone knows they are going to get a bucketload of Oscar nominations."

I agree, UV. There's something unseemly and shameful about him doing this. IMO, it violates the whole intent of the Independent Spirit Awards.

Hopefully he's over-reached, and his sharp elbows will be reined in.

Reading the IFC guy's comment that the $20 Million budget is a "guideline" was a weak explanation. Just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you should.

I also think there may be some merit to Scott's observation that maybe a gritty cop drama wasn't "artistic" enough. Maybe there was some bias toward the genre. We'll never know.

I'm glad Michael got a nomination. He did excellent work, and he is deserving. I'm glad EoW got the other nomination, too. As a producer, I hope Jake continues to be proud and happy for the wonderful reception the movie is getting and for his work as well.

UltraViolet said...

MonaLisa :( We just have to appreciate the fact that it was a great movie and that it has gotten a lot of acclaim.

Hagen, I'm sure it stings for Jake that he wasn't nominated, for all the reasons you mentioned and because MP was. I'm sure he's happy for Michael, but I think Jake's a competitive guy.

Maybe someone will ask him at his web chat on Friday!

I also think that the subject matter of EoW was a factor. Definitely not the emo, introspective stuff that is often praised. A shame.

Rachel said...

Aww, that's cute. And yes, I think it was posted today.

Here's a little tidbit from Sunday:

CELEBRITY SIGHTING: In some obscure Japanese clothing/container store we ran into Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake is exactly what you would expect… tall, bushy beard, pretty eyes and was dressed semi grungy. This was a good celebrity sighting!

HE LOOKED AT ME AND SMILED AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF “THIS MAN LOOKS A LOT LIKE JAKE GYLLENHAAL.”

There was something on Yahoo about Jake and Atticus, a short article and a video (not working) and pic (older). The article was about pampering man's best friend.

I miss Atticus.

Scott said...

Aww Atticus is the facility owner's favorite dog. The video is now working.

Jennifer Lawrence isn't overrated to the people who have worked with her. They think she is a great talent and they love working with her.
We all have people we like and don't like so much but when people who know her and work with her say they think she's great in all areas then i go with that.
There are people who don't think Jake is a good actor for some reason - they've seen one movie or whatever and they might think he's overrated, but that's not what people say who work with him - they think he's great.

Here's a link for the Atticus story. Interesting that the guy actually trained Atticus. I wonder if he tried with poor Boo, too.

The London tweets are slow in coming. When he was last there for the video shoot, there were a ton.

Since she hasn't sketched Joan yet, I'm hoping that means Joan is on after Jake. Don't want her eating into Jake's whole time :)

Jake Gyllenhaal dating graduate student

The Brokeback Mountain star was photographed walking arm-and-arm with a mystery woman in New York City on 9 November (12) and she has since been identified by bosses at the National Enquirer as Iranian Mahsa Jafarian.

According to the publication, she is currently enrolled in a master's degree programme at a college in the Big Apple and met the Hollywood hunk on a train in September (12) - and they have been hanging out ever since.

A source says, "He asked for her number and gave her a call a few days later to ask how she did on an exam she'd told him about... Mahsa thinks Jake is intelligent, well-rounded and a perfect gentleman - and she's completely smitten with him."

Gyllenhaal's former leading ladies in real life include blondes Reese Witherspoon, Kirsten Dunst and Taylor Swift.

From the news reader:

“@TinaDaheley: So er, Jake Gyllenhaal is here. How's your Friday morning?” It's now filled with jealousy!!!!

Jake joked with her a bit.

They did play the Never Ever about a half hour before Jake was on, btw. No other mention of the TayCray, as someone on Twitter referred to her.

And this could be good, too. Jake sometimes seems more relaxed doing these overseas things, as he was on Radio 1.

Up early to prepare for an #EmpirePodcast interview with Mr Jake Gyllenhaal. I'm going to ask him about Bubble Boy and nothing else.

UltraViolet said...

DJ: "I love Jake Gyllenhaal. Such a nice guy."

Amazing, what a guy, have him on every day. Guys and girls like him.

Here are some notes I took - definitely didn't catch everything. It was a fun, relaxed interview, about 45 minutes from beginning to end but interspersed with songs and the news.

Jake is announced and he tells everyone they look great, to much appreciation.

Ran into Lily Allen at a restaurant
He knows LA's mother, who was a producer on Proof
Pretty much the same as she was when she was a teenager

DJ saw EoW yesterday; couldn't get anyone to go with him. Jake: "Thanks, guys."

They discuss Movember and the months of long work Jake's beard has taken.

Cagey about when he goes back onstage. Not sure why he wouldn't say where else he's going.

Talk about the play, the fear is the best part.

He chats too much and his sentences don't go anywhere."

Jake: Sounds like a wonderful radio host.

Half of my closest friends are British; worked here. Talks about Donnie Darko. Feels a lot of support professionally.

Is there anything he does straight away, like the DJ has to go to In&Out Burger when he's in LA.

Jake: No. Nothing specific.

Then he changes his answer: Coming to this radio show. I'd arrange my flight to come right here.

DJ promises Jake he'll grow his beard until Christmas, even though Jake said he only had to do it for the rest of November.

Someone was supposed to have a video chat with Jake, but the poor woman's internet went down. So Gina had to settle for the phone.

Sadly, she asked a question we've heard many times:
What would you do if you didn't act? Cook.
Traditional local/farmer's market/seasonal food answer. He'd ask what they want.
Gina says she'd asked for a feast. DJ says he's busy with a play and the beard - he doesn't have time for that!

Weird, vieuw days ago someone else post the name of this woman and called her his PA, and ore his Dresser.

So im thinking again, I wait when I see/hear more about it and when a course confirmed it on a website were we al know that they check there couses before they post it.
Cause we dind see them together again after the 9 oktober. and we dind hear more about the fact he whas out whit her ore have a dinner whit her, but we see tweets that he whas on a date whit another women etc. so I believe it,when I hear jake about it.
