Old Blue Eyes

Jake Gyllenhaal appeared at the “Celebration of Paul Newman’s Dream” benefit Monday night. The event raised money for The Hole in the Wall camps, part of what is now called the Serious Fun Children’s Network.

Jake joined fellow performers Josh Groban, Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey, among others. And the biggest performers: the campers themselves.

Some video of Jake:

Here's Jake talking about what camp he went to and why he wanted to do the event. Great clip!

And a couple of videos of Jake on stage, talking about Paul and the organization:

This tweet made me laugh out loud:

"think I've proven my maturity tonight by not yelling "Take it off!" when Jake Gyllenhaal was on stage at the benefit I just attended"

FYI: The French director Francois Ozon, who was a member of the jury with Jake in Berlin, is in NYC @ Lincoln Center tonight along with MArtin Scorcese, to honor Catherine Deneuve. Hope they got a chance to visit while he's in town.

I love to see you at these events for well
Thanks for the video UV, although I do not understand what he says (he speaks very fast), I asked Monica community for someone to translate, but if anyone here can tell me, thank very much ;)

UltraViolet said...

Hi Mayumi and welcome :)

No problem about last week - it was all a misunderstanding and not our fault!

I love to see Jake doing events like this, as well. I hope he had a good time and that we'll get to hear what he did on stage.

Chica, looks like blogger was acting up for you! You should try out Joe's Shanghai one of these days :)

UltraViolet said...

Daniela, I'll try to cover it. At first, someone asks Jake a question I can't hear and the press person tells them, "Event-related, please." Then you hear someone else say not everyone goes to camp, so I don't know if they asked Jake about going to camp when he was young?

Jake then says that JoAnne called him "out of the blue after what I know must have been a tough couple of years" and asked him to do the benefit. That the camps were something JoAnne and Paul would always talk to him about when they saw him over the years. He said something about spreading the "generosity of Paul's spirit."

Someone asks him if he has a favorite movie or movie moment of Paul Newman's, and Jake says he grew up thinking of PN as the guy on the salad dressing bottle and not as an actor. And that is what PN cared about more than being an actor. Jake does then say that, yes, there are memorable acting moments of Paul, that PN was always doing something political as someone in his position should.

The reporter then asks if Jake has a favorite salad dressing flavor. He says the original is best - there was just the original first and then came all the other flavors. The very first one was amazing - the vinaigrette. She then asks Jake if he prefers his dressing on the side, but he just laughs.

He says he has never gone to one of the camps - Paul always asked him to but he never got to one, because they were open only at certain times. He talks about how now they've extended the program to hospitals, and it's open at different times. He's hoping to get there this summer.

Then he mentions his work with Edible Schoolyard and says he'd like to get a garden in the camps. Someone asks if he's going to show the kids how to garden, and he says he'll participate but someone else, an expert, can teach them how.

Someone asks if gardening is a hidden talent but he just laughs.

What is he looking forward to tonight? He says the kids. He hears there is a lot of talent, including " the new Adele." Someone asks if he is going to sing, and he just smiles and says no.

The very last, someone asks if he's excited to be an uncle again and he smiles and says yes.

Hope that helps!

Added another video to the post, this link. Thanks to Gyllencrazy for finding it.

Video of Jake and other celebs arriving and leaving the event.

I love that last link, with Jake talking about Walt Whitman camp and beef stroganoff. Even young Jake was a foodie, lol.

You always see all this video taken but never get to actually see/hear it, so I'm grateful for these two clips.

Added two clips of Jake on stage. Hope we get to see more, maybe on the entertainment shows tonight.

From a site called Local Bozo:

The incomparable program was an expertly run show, seamlessly interweaving the talented children in and out of the celebrity guest monologues and song performances. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal fondly recalled how influential Paul Newman’s on screen work was on his own acting career, while late host Jimmy Fallon extolled the network of camps and their incredible success today. 30 Rock’s Tina Fey read an actual letter written by the parent of a camper, speaking of the immeasurable relief the camp was able to bring to their family, giving them just a short respite from having to care for the child so intricately. Country star Trisha Yearwood joined the likes of singers Josh Groban, Elvis Costello, and the incomparable Paul Simon for some alternating poignant and rocking live musical performances, both with and without the help of the campers.

Here's an Entertainment Weekly story on the event.

A press release said that Jake made a big announcement. I think that was the change of the name of the organization from Hole in the Wall Gang to Serious Fun. I posted the link to the organization in the main post and here. They have a pretty good charity rating, if you wonder about those things and want to make a donation.

Hi Leonor! I Love that Ellen Pompeo story. I think she does, too.

Sass, hope you're feeling better. I think seeing Jake doing these things cheers us all up.

OONP, I think living there and not in LA was one of the keys to their successful marriage.

Extra, the blue definitely did its job :)

You're welcome, Mary. It was fun to have a Jake event to post about again.

Daniela, glad the summary helped. Wouldn't want you to miss out on the Jake fun.

I know this is off topic, but today would have been Heath Ledger's 33rd birthday. He meant a lot to Jake so I just thought I'd mention it.

Hi Tweety, thanks! It's fun when Jake does these things.

Happy Birthday, Heath!

Here's an interview with Daniel Wolfe, the director of the Shoes video. And in this clip, the Shoes talk a little bit about Jake.

Lynette Howell was a producer on The Place Beyond the Pines and will be producing a movie starring Reese and Ryan Reynolds.

Wonder what she and Jake were/are looking to work on. It's always encouraging to hear that Jake is meeting with these folks, but it would be nice to hear about an actual project!

No, I don't know who those artists are. /old

Bobbyanna, maybe Jake should do a play! :)

bobbyanna said...

K'naan is Somalian. Both artists a pretty cool.

bobbyanna said...

Meant to say, yeah, definitely a play, UV. Jake on stage in NYC. That would be major.

I'd love to see him do Shakespeare in the Park.

Hell, as far as I'm concerned, he could spend a day drinking coffee at LaColombe, and call it performance art! LOL!

As far as I know, Jessica Chastain and David Strathairn have been cast for The Heiress, in the Fall, but I haven't heard whether Morris has been cast.

Daniela said...

Daniela happily helped the summary. Do not want you to miss the fun Jake.

Never, UV!

And what? You saw him smile for the last time in 2009? Wow! I saw the smile many times since I joined lol Jakeword

Unless last smile has something different from what I saw after 2009, what was it?

UltraViolet said...

You can see more footage of Jake onstage here.

From the NY Post:

Jake Gyllenhaal has been turning heads — or “spinning” them — by popping up on the “instructor’s bike” at SoulCycle in Union Square. The “Source Code” star cycled on a stage next to an instructor Monday in full view of an afternoon spin class. He even mouthed the words to a Jay-Z song playing on the soundtrack while wearing “a black tank top, shorts and full beard dripping in sweat,” a spy said, adding Jake even lip-synced, “I got 99 problems but a bitch ain’t one.”

UltraViolet said...

One of the grls who met Jake googled "Why are Jake Gyllenhaal and K'naan friends?" LOL. She got no answer.

There's photo of Justin Bieber coming out of a Union Square restaurant, and another roy the girls mentioned something about a benefit at Carnegie Hall. Someone else saw Jake at the Sony building. All in all, we have no idea what Jake was doing today :)

I look forward to the tweets. So Jake lived well at the camp. Beef Stoganoff. lol

I guess well find out of Jake is starting "Double" in Canada (we never did get a confirmation he was doing the movie. In the past his agents or publicists would confirm role rumors.)

I haven't been to Toronto in several years. I wish I could go back, especially NOW that Jake is supposedly going there

Lily

UltraViolet said...

Lily, Jake's publicists and agents didn't confirm his roles in Nailed, L&OD, EoW, Rendition or Brothers. They might have confirmed PoP, I can't remember. But generally, we'd find out from a Variety or Hollywood Reporter story saying he's in talks.

Tweety, that picture is hilarious. I think it takes blurry to a whole new level.

Bobbyanna, thanks for the camp stuff! Institutional beef stroganoff doesn't sound too appealing.

Daniela, I forgot to say yesterday that I was being sarcastic in my post about Jake's not smiling since 2009. I was responding to the anon troll complaining that Jake doesn't smile anymore.
