Finding your photos

A grab bag of photos to start the week. Hadn't seen that particular shot of Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Bettany before.

Jake in Berlin in February

Early Jake

Jake I don't know when - L&OD premiere, perhaps?

Cute shot of the Gyllenhaals from last night's PBS showing of Finding Your Roots, on which Maggie Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. traced their family trees.

It was an interesting look at the history of both families. Makes you want to trace your own roots.

It was fascinating and I loved Maggie's reaction when she found out that she was a distant cousin to the Bushes, LOL!!

I have a cousin that is piecing together our family history via Ancestory.com and I and other family members are helping in the search.

I thoroughly enjoyed the program!
Yes, Chica, her reaction to being a Bush cousin was hilarious. I found Naomi's story pretty moving, her mother was a very remarkable woman. And yes, UV, Jake & Maggie are comparative underachievers in their family. : )

We've been working on "roots" for a while now, too. It's funny how limited one side of the family might be in terms of how far back we can trace, without "professional help."

As I looked at Maggie unrolling that huge Gyllenhaal tree, I figure maybe we're all Gyllenhaal "cousins." LOL!

I hope there's a way for fans in other countries to see the program, both Robert & Maggie had good stories.

Office Of Nancy Pelosi said...

I watched it too and Maggies' Grandmother was a really remarkable woman.

It was interesting to hear how the they became royalty and that she was not aware of her family ties to Cap Code and!

The Bush link was too funny and she is the 9th cousin to Shirley Temple!

I was a bit surprised that Robert and his Dad knew very little about their history as oppose to Maggie. He did explain why and it was touching to see his reactions along with his father's when told.

She was surprised to hear about some things but a lot of things she was aware of as we have heard and read about them.

I love that pic of the Gyllenhaals UV!!

I missed it I guess with the time change it came on at 5 here in Ca I didnt think about the time difference just assumed it would be on at 8 out here :(

UltraViolet said...

Oh, that's too bad, Mary. But generally, shows are rein often on PBS. It is also apparently watchable online.

UltraViolet said...

Viv, those videos are always very sad!

bobbyanna said...

LOL! I forgot all about Shirley Temple! So,Maggie & Jake have performing in their genes! : )

Last night's program made me think of a scene from the movie Amistad. Djimon Honsou summoning his ancestors for strength in times of adversity. That conviction that their collective strength would be there for him. I liked that scene.

I missed the show but I'm sure PBS will air it again.

Would love to research my family tree, the Gyllenhaal family tree is s rich and fascinating.

Maybe Maggie & Jake's grandmother, as great as she was, didn't have a talent for acting.
I think they are in a noble profession. They do have to work hard and to make what they do believable and they entertain people. That's a good thing. It's not something everyone can do.

I don't think their Grandmother had any interest in acting. She chose the medical field and became a doctor. She was a pioneer and all together awesome woman. Not putting down acting, but IMO i'm more impressed with their Grandmother becoming a doctor.

I think that if Maggie and Jake's parents weren't in show biz that they would have chosen a different profession, just speculation on my part!

For those who missed it, make sure you catch it when it airs again, it'a fascinating.

I really love that photo of the Gyllenhaal brood , they look so happy!

Can't tell if Jake is on his way home from those tweets.

The comments about them being "underachievers" were offered in a light hearted way, not a serious way.

For me, the main point was Maggie & Jake's family was able to achieve things, overcoming obstacles for their times, whether it was anti-Semetism or Anti-feminism, no matter what field they are in.

I didn't think it was about comparing one profession to another.

The American experience was always based on a person giving his children a better life, taking advantage of opportunities he didn't have.

A Grandfather working in the Garment district, sewing and cutting, has a daughter who's a doctor. Back in those days that's pretty amazing. ( The route he took to even get to America was an achievement!)

My parents worked in factories hoping to afford college for their kids. Growing up in the Depression, they were proud to be High School graduates.

Jake & Maggie are very gifted and very determined. They've already had recognition most actors never get. They stand on the shoulders of their ancestors. : )

That is a cute picture Daniela!

I can trace my roots on my parents side to Poland and Russia. Loved Maggie's reaction when she found out she was a distant relative to FDR, The Bushes and Shirley Temple, LOL!!

I want to see Jake so badly when he does that play in NY in the Fall, fingers crossed!

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, being Jewish like Jake and Maggie, I can't trace my roots very far back (not like they can on their father's side) The paper trail for me was lost, or I have no one I can talk to about my family tree.

I see Jake is back at his CZ at soul cycle.

UltraViolet said...

You're welcome, chica. I printed out a pass, but don't know if I can justify going. There is a BBM screening at MoMA the next day. That makes it more appealing, in a way. But I assume one will have to wait in long lines for both, and I don't know if I'm up for all that. But EoW five months early is very tempting!

From Facebook, a producer with something called Southern Sky Productions:

Just picked up a possible Jake Gyllenhaal film, a Mila Kunis film, and an Aronofsky film. Got 2 other film projects into negotiation phase. Grateful to God for a blessed week thus far.

No idea if it's fact or fantasy.

Guy Lodge thinks the Berlin jury beats Cannes :)

UltraViolet said...

I hope you can make it, Chica. OR other NY GBers. Hope we hear some reactions online.

bobbyanna said...

Yaaay! I'm jealous. I hope some of us get to see EoW next week.
I'd love to but it's impossible.: (

Hopefully we'll get some good feedback. Jake may even turn up at a screening...

UV, I loved the comment about the Berlin jury. It really was impressive. I can only imagine what Guy Lodge would say about the Tribeca jury. Kellan Lutz? Camilla Belle?

Chica said...

I would love to go to the BBM Screening at MOMA UV but I have other plans that evening;(

I definately will give a spoiler free report of EOW!!

The Berlin jury was very impressive Bobbyanna and not just because Jake was on it :)

The Tribeca FF has been disappointing for the last few years with a lot of light weight films being screened for the most part IMO. It's no surprise that Belle and Lutz are on the jury, sigh.

A couple of items from FB:

was on the Q train with Jake Gyllenhaal this morning he got on on canel st and got off with me on Union square !!!!!! Didn't want to freak out so i just stared at him lol!!!!!!!!!

Spotted Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Jake Gyllenhaal all leaving a late-night private party at Jerry Seinfeld's apartment building on Central Park West last night. SJP left in a taxi, Jake took the subway home, and the pompous ones left the same way they always do: Million dollar Mercedes vans and Escalades.

I'm so jealous of all the NY GB's, they get a chance to see a screening of EOW and get to see BBM again on the
big screen.

Anonymous said...

WOW I didn't BBM was being shown at MOMA, DARN why did I move out of NY again? (eye roll) figures the year after I move out Jake gets on my radar.

I'm hoping to get to see Jake in the play (hopefully with fellow GBs and Brokies)

And here's video of a mellow Jake leaving the party and getting on the subway.

Kellan Lutz and Camille Belle? That's embarrassing. I would think DeNiro could bet some higher profile names!

UltraViolet said...

Bad timing, Lily!

Chica, did you get a pass for the screening? One minute, I'm convinced I should go. The next, I think it's silly. Too bad about the BBM screening.

There's some speculation that Jake and Beyonce were dining because of her/Clint Eastwood's remake of A Star Is Born. I can't quite see that, but who knows.

Someone took a bad photo of Jake at ABC Kitchen today. LOL at the flash going off.

Also, someone else just tweeted that Jake is at the nearly empty movie theater s/he is at. No mention of the film yet.
