It's a neW year

Happy New Year, GBers!

I know, I know - what took so long? Better late than never! Here's to a happy, healthy year for all.

On the Jake front, we know there will be at least two new movies (Demolition and Nocturnal Animals). Who knows what else will pop up?

While we wait, W Magazine has posted videos from their Screen Test series, with Jake discussing his favorite love scene, the scene that always makes him cry and his best birthday. And he looks great doing it.

I just realized the Golden Globes are this Sunday! They are just now announcing presenters, and I really don't expect Jake to be around at all, but I'm going to watch because out of all the awards shows coming up, the Globes are usually fun. Denzel Washington is getting the Cecil B. DeMille award, so there's that.

I have to say, I watched Trainwreck recently and it was just horrible. I've seen Mad Max and while I enjoy a good action movie and I like Tom Hardy and Charlie's work, in general, I really don't get all the love the movie is getting. My favorite action/comedy last year was Spy. I thought it was hilarious.

There are a lot of movies I haven't seen yet so I guess I'll have to get busy. Carol, Youth, Danish Girl, Hateful 8, and this Friday Revenant opens. I always say I'm going to watch the nominated films and I usually fall short. Saw previews for Demolition when I went to see Brooklyn last week.

Thnkas for re-posting, UV.

Jake is adorable in these clips! I know exactly the Jerry Maguire sequence he's referring to!

Rennaissance Fair? Really, Jake? LOL!

UltraViolet said...

Renaissance Fair - my nightmare.

I liked Trainwreck :) Hated Mad Max. I think I've seen all the Oscar movies except Hateful 8 and The Revenant, and I'm not sure I want to see either one.

I'm gritting my teeth now that Awards Season is underway, and it will be Jakeless once again. Is it April yet?

New Year, same CZ:

The mornings when I grab a coffee at La Colombe and see Jake Gyllenhaal are the best mornings.

Looks like Jake is at Hamilton again. Lucky guy.

jake gyllenhaal is here and I am screaming internally #hamilTonight
I spoke to jake gyllenhaal and I am shaking
@Lin_Manuel @HamiltonMusical y'all are killing it tonight also jake gyllenhaal is here just in case you were not informed
tonight, I looked into the eyes of Jake Gyllenhaal and told him I loved his work. my life will never be the same.
I am both shaking from looking into HIS FACE ~AND~ trying not to cry from the end of act 2 so this is where I am

Photos.

I sa Hamilton in the fall and can't wait to go back.

I'd love to see Jake do a Ham4Ham.

I really love Mad Max. I'm big fan of George Miller's work. Mad Max is very beautiful it's a blockbuster but with a message. And Theron/Hardy are fantastic.

I appreciated Trainwreck mostly because of Amy Schumer.

I'll go see the 'Hateful Eight' this week end.

I also think the sex scene of 'out of sight' is one of the best cinema sex scene.
And Jerry Maguire is my favorite Tom Cruise's movie with 'Cocktail' lol (i'm not a huge fan of Tom Cruise).

Great new post ;)

Thanks, Mary. Very interesting news! And LOL:

Well, I saw an early screening of The Revenant. OMG. Someone please get me some blankets and a hot bath? The movie is visually stunning and Tom Hardy and Leo do an exceptional job. They really do. After having seen The Big Short, Trumbo, The Martian, & Spotlight I don't see any of them coming close to this. I still need to see The Danish Girl and Carol. Will try to do that before the GG broadcast Sunday Night.

Revenant is a BIG movie. You get a real sense of the vastness and the savagery of their surroundings. I mean it pulls you right in. Man against the elements. It was exhausting. Not a movie I would run to see a second time. And that Grizzly bear attack. OMG. No words. It was a real experience. Made me wish Inarritu had directed Everest...except I think Jake would still be up on that damned mountain.

Ann said...

Great news for Jake! The show sounds intriguing, I look forward to seeing it.

Bobbyanna - I agree about The Revenant. I found myself reaching for my scarf and hat during the film to get warm, Lol. I loved the movie, it's impressive and unlike anything I've seen.

American cults is a fascinating subject, looking forward to seeing Jake's production company to explore it on A&E.

Revenant was incredible, it's one of Leo's best performance to date. Fury Road, the latest Mad Max movie was one of my favorite movies of 2015 but I'm really surprised at the love it's getting and the awards and nominations, didn't see that coming.

I guess we know why he was in San Francisco a few weeks back – – probably doing research on the early days of the Peoples Temple.

He might not be presenting at the Golden Globe but he is in Los Angeles right now. A couple of people on Tumblr have reported seeing him in Beverly Hills. One gal sold him a humidifier yesterday.

Anonymous said...

Happy Golden Globes to everyone! I haven't seen a lot of movies from that bunch, most of them haven't been released here yet and the one I saw (Carol) didn't warm me up.. so I don't know what to wish for tonight (maybe Jane Fonda, who struck me down in her ten-minute-performance in Youth).
However, I see that Maggie will be one of the presenters, so maybe J. is going to join her? Hope that...

Made me wish Inarritu had directed Everest...except I think Jake would still be up on that damned mountain.
LOL! And can you imagine Everest shot in just one long take?! :))))

ps: great post UV, great pictures (and... Jerry Maguire again! He remembers every single footage from that movie!!)

Maggie is presenting one of the awards tonight. Maybe Jake will be there with her.

For me, the JM scene is funny. This film is so meh.

BlueJean said...

I saw JM years ago - and turned it off halfway through, I believe. Generally, I'm just not into that kind of movies and I'm not really into Tom Cruise either ;) When I first read that JM is one of Jake's favorite movies, I was actually surprised. It does explain why he chose to do LAOD though... ;)

bobbyanna said...

I thought Jerry Maguire was fun. I remember the scene he's referring to, and I didn't shed tears, but it was a tense scene. I enjoyed the movie, but that was before TV went off the rails, or at least before I knew about it. : )

Yes, Blue Jean. RIP David Bowie. Will be thinking of Duncan and his family. I know he & his wife had a health challenge dealing with her breast cancer diagnosis a few years back.

Among all the lovely tributes to David Bowie*, may I superficially add that it always makes me happy when Jake can sport a full beard and manage not to pair it with the gelled back hair? So often as of late with him, one look seems to come tandem with the other, so delighted to see in the Instagram that the hair hasn't reached shellacked levels yet. ;)

When were the W MAGAZINE pictures taken? (Check Twitter-the three' pics not used are divine.) I though maybe the shoot was done during Nocturnal Animals, due to hair length, but his face is so much fuller than it was during that shoot. (The pics taken for THR/The Wrap show that look.) But there's no beard either.... Just can't place the time frame when he was sans beard, with longer hair and at "normal weight...? They couldn't have been taken way back when, when he shaved, post-Constellations, in spring, could they?

BlueJean said...

"sans beard" :)))

I always love the 'avec' or 'sans beard' expression! And I had been wondering about the time frame as well.

UltraViolet said...

I think it was during or after Nocturnal Animals filming. It's the only time I can remember Jake having tat combination hair and frame the past year. He's definitely thinner than usual in the photos. I'm going to add the new ones to the post. They are great.

Remember how disappointed and angry we were last year? I really didn't expect anything big for Jake this year, but it does seem like his training and prep for 'Southpaw' was all for nothing. Well, not for nothing as such, but I'm sure you get my point. He didn't receive a nomination anywhere! Not a single one! That's slightly disappointing, even for me.

bobbyanna said...

I agree, Blue Jean, once again, he did work really hard to train, and learn, and develop his character. Yes, that's true. 'Creed' also has Sylvester Stallone, so it got more attention because of him. And, let's face it, 'Southpaw' wasn't as good as many hoped it would be - apart from Jake's performance (and Oona's).

UltraViolet said...

Looks like Jake is in town to talk to Jeff Bauman. He was spotted at a restaurant in the town where Bauman lives. Another photo.

The Boston Herald also had this:

Jake Gyllenhaal nibbling on a late lunch at Scampo yesterday.

And LOL.

UltraViolet said...

I just think Southpaw wasn't a good enough movie. Even if it had been more of a hit, the story was too cliched for people to take seriously enough for an Oscar. Which is a shame, because Jake's performance is better than Redmayne's, IMO. And Cranston's.

I don't think it was all for nothing, however. It's an enjoyable move that many people loved. And it seems to have meant a lot to Jake. The fact that it didn't get him an Oscar nomination doesn't negate all that.

Unlike Bobbyanna, I don't take a lot of heart in how much acclaim or respect Jake is garnering. It feels like he's had that for long enough. I'm not sure what it will take for Hollywood to acknowledge and use him properly.

CHELMSFORD -- A Hollywood star swooped into town Friday afternoon.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal met with Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, a Chelmsford native, at Brickhouse Pizza in Chelmsford center from 2 to 4 p.m.

Employees at Brickhouse confirmed his visit, and took photos with him. "I was in the back in the kitchen and everyone started saying, 'Jake Gyllenhaal's here! Jake Gyllenhaal's here!' It was very exciting," said Laurie Boumil, kitchen manager at Brickhouse.

She added that Bauman is a regular at the restaurant, and has a great outlook on life despite what happened to him at the marathon. "He goes on like it never even happened," Boumil said. "Just a happy-go-lucky guy."

Bar manager Kristy Sheedy said that Gyllenhaal was casual, comfortable and didn't have a large entourage like other stars.

"It was very exciting for us, and we're grateful for Jeff to bring him here," Sheedy said.

UV, yes, it's very discouraging, but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it aside from feeling frustrated, discouraged, upset, impatient, etc. So my goal is to appreciate it for what it is. Because Jake has films with "legs." His work has real staying power. They're still part of the conversation years after their release. I don't always reach my goal. : ) I was pissed off that Southpaw fizzled and he was ignored in the awards season conversations. But I need to stay optimistic.; )

I think with Jake, first he doesn't seem able to break through to get offered the kind of work other people get. (Ryan Gosling, whose box office numbers aren't spectacular, for example.) and the other thing I perceive is that he holds himself back with some of the choices he makes. It hurts my feelings when I see guys like Channing Tatum "walk past him" and get opportunities he doesn't get.

You're right, Jake, Oona, & Forest Whitaker were the only good things about Southpaw. It didn't do well at the box office, and Stallone/Creed were on the calendar. IMO, I don't see how they could've released it any earlier and avoided comparisons with Creed.

Jake needs stronger box office, of course, but he doesn't seem to fair well in movies that seem to be box office bait. And some of his other choices are quirky and appeal to narrow audiences like Nightcrawler and Enemy, or they're downers like Prisoners. The Rom Coms, the action adventures, the tentpoles, etc. seem to elude him both by choice and circumstance.

My hope is that one day...very soon, his reputation for outstanding work, will combine with good numbers, and he'll get a chance to move up to better choices and opportunities. Because right now, I don't see him getting the kind of offers that will push him into that upper tier. (Personally, I think he would've been great in The Martian. And I say that as a Matt Damon Fan. But he probably wasn't even asked.) : )

bobbyanna said...

" I don't see how they could've released it any earlier and avoided comparisons with Creed."

I meant LATER. not earlier. : )

bobbyanna said...

I guess I just don't want to get so focussed on awards season acknowlegements that I don't appreciate the work for its own sake. Jake respects his craft so he'll always work hard and "over prepare" (in his own words) because that's how he is. I don't think he would ever characterize his preparation as "all for nothing." If Jake's main goal was to win an award than he'd soon get very discouraged, and might stop trying, and his career choices would reflect that. But I don't think the awards are the goal of a performance for him.

BlueJean said...

Uhm. By "all for nothing" I meant that he was actually too good to be in a mediocre film like 'Southpaw'. I don't know... maybe 'Southpaw' looked better on paper than the actual finished film turned out to be. There were some odd choices in the film, it felt very rushed at some points.

I'm sure Jake is very proud of it, he has said so many times. And 'Southpaw' did very well in Europe, I believe.

Maybe it's just me, but I kinda respect Jake for not being "Hollywood" enough. It was even mentioned in some interview last year. I don't remember the exact quote, and I'm too lazy to search for it, but it was something like: "Who cares if Hollywood doesn't know what to do with Jake Gyllenhaal, he's walking his own path" - something like that.

I think that walking his own path is the only way for him to do his job. As Bobbyanna said: that's how he is. I like his quirky choices. I wouldn't want to see him in a big budget movie if his heart is not in it. That's why I'm still puzzled about his role in 'Everest'. For some reason I still think that a big part of Jake's role ended up on the cutting room floor - he was hardly on screen.

UltraViolet said...

I think you consistently misinterpret what I mean, BJ. I don't want Jake to be in a big0budget movie just for the sake of it. But I would have loved to see him get a part in a movie like The Big Short. I'm not sure why he doesn't - whether it's his choice or the choice of other people or a combination.

And Bobbyanna, I'm not disappointed about the Oscars or other awards. It's been clear for a very long time that Southpaw wasn't going anywhere in that respect. We agree that it's a shame Jake isn't getting, or doesn't seem to be getting, better opportunities.

UltraViolet said...

Also, I liked Everest. I don't mind that Jake did it. I don't have any problem with him working on that kind of a movie if it's something he thinks would be fun. I do wonder exactly why he did it, but I'm not sorry he did.

Nocturnal Animals was the most sought after movie at the film market in Cannes last year. Time will tell if it's a good film, but it's certainly a 'prestige film'. And I think it's prestigious to star in a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée after Dallas Buyers Club was nominated for six and Wild for two Oscars, respectively. Demolition didn't get strong reviews, but that's another matter. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is hardly a nobody after Me and Earl and the Dying Girl won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. The script for Stronger is very high on the current "Black List". I do think that Jake should stay away from Antoine Fuqua, but I guess he won't listen to me. ;-) (Though I must say Fuqua's work on Southpaw was fine unlike Kurt Sutter's unoriginal script.) I don't feel it's necessary that Jake gets a role in one of those movies with an all-star cast like The Big Short to be acknowledged.

bobbyanna said...

I enjoyed Everest too, UV. My only complaint was that there was not nearly enough Jake.

I still don't know how I feel about Jake doing 'Stronger'. Does it make me a bad fan if I say I most likely won't watch it?

It is disappointing that he wasn't recognised for his SP work - yes, the script was weak and predictable, but he really transformed himself and did an amazing job.

Woke up to this winter's first snow :)

BlueJean said...

"I think you consistently misinterpret what I mean, BJ."

:))) I think I understand what you mean. Maybe it's the way I answer. Or maybe we just have different views. How "big budget" is big budget and how prestigious should a project be? Should Jake be part of an all-star cast again? ;)

Maybe Jake feels like big budget is just not "his thing" at the moment. Most directors (and co-stars) he works with are prestigious enough, like Hagen explained.

We all seem to agree on 'Southpaw' and 'Everest'. Overall, I liked 'Everest' too, it just puzzles me why Jake's not in it more. Why hire someone like Jake and promote the movie like he's the star, and then hardly use him? But we've had that discussion before.

I am looking forward to 'Demolition', that's for sure. Variety said it was Jake's best performance since 'Brokeback Mountain'. Guess they haven't seen 'Enemy' ;)

"When will start the filming of TMWMIS? Last week, Ridley Scott confirmed he will make Cartel."

This is the film that I wish would go away now and it seems it has stalled. Too many glitches, first the legal issues, then the rewriting of the screen play and Jake's and Antoine's busy schedules. The film does not seem a big priority anymore.

I don't think Jake would have taken on "Stronger" unless the script was really good and he trusted the director to interpret the material. Sure it doesn't seem exciting to me but neither did the premise of Nightcrawler when I first heard of it. And I am excited about his co-star (knock wood that she doesn't pull out).

And I am sure Jake would love a couple of domestic hits as it opens up the purse strings for him to produce more films. Although many actors are learning that TV projects are cash cows.

Anonymous said...

The assumption seems to be that a "big budget" or "ensemble cast" project would be selling out. I'm not that's the case. A small, indie movie can be crappy, just as much as a larger budget project can be insightful and probing. It all depends on the script and director. Both Spotlight and The Big Short are films about difficult subjects, suported by great scripts, skilled directors, and a talented casts. I'd like to think that if given the opportunity, that Jake would have pursued roles in them if asked, and vice-versa, that the studios would have sought him for a role.
I agree with above posters who wondered what the appeal was for Jake in the scripts for Southpaw and Everest. I can't imagine either were stellar on paper, no matter how big or small his role was. Sometimes I do worry he looks more at his role and the physical prep he has to do for it, and then ignores the bigger picture on how rest of the movie comes together. Yes, some of it is out of his hands--things get changed in editing and post-production that he has no control over--but he couldn't have looked at the predictable "Southpaw" script and throught it was anything groundbreaking...?
"Stronger" looks promising, but it has the potential to become too saccharine and predictable as well. TV-Movie-y, if you catch my drift. Hopefully not.

I will say my faith in Jake's movie-picking will be much restored if this is a movie where his female costar gets to do more than...well, die. ;) I'm tired of the catalyst of his character's growth being the death of his wife. Feel like his last films (even going back to End of Watch) are explorations of "man pain" at the expense of complex female characters. I hope Taitana's character in "Broken" is more than the dutiful wife, and gets to have a diverse and layered arc of her own AND in relations to Jake's. It just makes a movie stronger (ha!) if all components are balanced and not just skewed toward one character.

Anonymous said...

1 more thing: I always tout this was a great review/alnalysis of Southpaw's faults; how Jake'd dedication was too good for this predictable movie. I also like that it points out that the movie did a disservice to the plot and Jake's depth of performance by taking away Rachel McAdams away.
Funny Excerpt:
"Lessons of Southpaw: Despite worrying that repeated blows to the skull will kill you, keep fighting for your pride. If you're a single parent worried about losing your daughter to the institution, do not find a job, train for the sport that could put you in a coma. Being a mentor is only worth it if you get something out of it. Janitorial work is for quitters. Televised slugfests are for winners.  Always kick your enemies' asses—that's what real men do. Inversely, always get your ass kicked—real men do that too. The key is believing in yourself; any loved ones who object will get on board sooner or later. Boxing movies say so."

http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/reviews/a36662/southpaw-review-jake-gyllenhaal-eminem/

I think it would have been a different, better film if they had let Maureeen live, and explore the issues she had with Billy's career, and how she enabled him. Was it a healthy marriage? What would have to change for it to become one? 22 years is a loooong time to be together--I'd rather see that explored, and how they have to evolve as parents and partners, if that's possible. The movie was too scared of a strong female lead and feared it would take away from Billy's journey; when in fact, it would have enhanced it.

Anonymous said...

Death isn't always the worst possible thing that can happen and yet a lot of Jake's movies center around death and dying whether it's his character or a wife or girl friend, or in Nightcrawler, Riz's character. Death seems to be a big catalyst.

Hagen said...

The assumption seems to be that a "big budget" or "ensemble cast" project would be selling out.

I think that's a misconception. Hardly anyone would complain if Jake played a role in movies like "Spotlight" or "The Big Short". Some of us just think that Jake's career is doing fine even without such roles.

Anonymous said...

"Both Spotlight and The Big Short are films about difficult subjects, suported by great scripts, skilled directors, and a talented casts."

"Feel like his last films (even going back to End of Watch) are explorations of "man pain" at the expense of complex female characters."

What complex females characters with their own relevant arcs, women doing more than just taking notes, are featured in Spotlight?

Where are the powerful women in The Big Short, the prestige equivalent of the misogynistic movies?

Where is the exploration of the "female pain" in The Revenant or Wolf of Wall Street?

Where are the balanced choices in the exclusively male focused, highly testosteronish movies of Leo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, McConaughey, Tom Hardy, Jeremy Renner, RDJ?

People don't seem to have a problem with these actors doing "manly" movies, but for some reason they have a problem with Jake. Riddle me this.....

UltraViolet said...

Riddle me this: Why are you referring to "people" when the comment was made by a single poster?

Even better, why don't either of you post with a name?

Anonymous said...

My questions were clearly directed to the comments made by the same anon at 4:02, 4:24, 4:25.

I used "people" because it's impersonal and more polite when you don't point the finger directly.

The overall thought is directed to all fans who feel the need to throw stones at Jake's choices when their favorites live in glass houses.

How could anyone criticize Jake for choosing so-called male centric movies, not true btw, but applaud Leo and Hardy, Bale, Carell and Gosling for choosing prestigious but exclusively men-movies?

The double standard used to criticize Jake needs to be addressed.

UltraViolet said...

But it's one person, not everyone. And I don't see that person lauding any of the actors you mention. And even if s/he did, we wouldn't know it, because s/he doesn't use a name. Like you.

It's more polite to pick a name and post under it so conversation can be facilitated.

I agree that Southpaw would have been better if Maureen had been a bigger part. And it's unfortunate that Demolition has the same premise: A man recovering from his wife's death. That said, it seems like Nocturnal Animals will have an equal (at least) female lead in Amy Adams.

Responding to Hagen above: Nocturnal Animals was a hot title. I don't know if I'd put Tom Ford in the prestige category yet. Same with JMV; he's hot because he's gotten his actors award nominations. But he's not at the top if the directors list.

:))) I think I understand what you mean. Maybe it's the way I answer. Or maybe we just have different views. How "big budget" is big budget and how prestigious should a project be? Should Jake be part of an all-star cast again? ;)

We do differ slightly, I think but obviously want the best for Jake. My concern isn'y with budgets but with the material and the other talent involved. But thank you for responding - after I posted, I was afraid I had come off as snippy!

BlueJean said...

"... after I posted, I was afraid I had come off as snippy!"

:) And I was afraid, even though my English is pretty good, you might misinterpret my answer. It's not always easy to explain exactly what I mean, particularly on the "big budget" subject. I seem to have a different opinion about that than some of you. And I know what I want to say, but how to put it... :)

It's pretty tough being European, posting on an American blog! ;) ;)

Before the reviews and then awards, neither an ensemble piece by Tom McCarthy or a comedy by Adam McKey would be considered more prestigious projects than a drama by Jean Marc Vallee. How many people even knew McCarthy and McKey before this year?
Of course it's easy to say things now. I just can't believe people really pretend they know how to pick projects better than Jake.

As fans who follow his career closely, we're allowed to question Jake's professional decisions. Doesn't mean we could do better!

I agree with UV on her points about Everest. It was a random choice, but I think in his recent work it has a lot to do with 'finding himself'. I think that it has a lot to do with picking projects that I necessarily wouldn't choose for him...since I obviously don't know what moves him and how much stock he puts into the journey and the end result.

Has anyone watched the new trailer for Demolition yet?

Also, I would like to see less dead wives!

bobbyanna said...

As far as his future projects go, this might seem crazy to some of you, but I'm really looking forward to The Current War, the movie he's making with Benedict Cumberbatch.

Sal the real one, I just think as a Jake fan, one must like a lot of work he has done. And I happen to like most of his work and think we share similar taste in movies. I also understand no one can get everything right, every decision prefect. I don't know. Call me blind if you want. I just have this 100% faith in him and I am looking forward to every film of his. And I have no reason to question him and his agent on how to pick a project and think I know better.

"Where are the balanced choices in the exclusively male focused, highly testosteronish movies of Leo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, McConaughey, Tom Hardy, Jeremy Renner, RDJ?"
I never even mentioned those actors. And I agree a majority of their films also shortshrift female characters. But this is a Jake board, and hence I was addressing his choices in particular. And questioning his choices doesn't make me less of a fan. It makes me an engaged fan. You can't just blindly love and adore everything someone does. Then you're not really interacting and assessing their work. You're just hero worshipping them. Jake is a confident guy with strong opinions and I'm sure he doesn't love every movie he's been in. I think he'd appreciate people engaging and debating his work and choices. There's nothing wrong or "disloyal" about pondering the why's and what's of his career.

My point is that Jake's earlier work often featured strong, vital female characters, and I hope he finds more scripts that also have that that same quality. He was raised with a strong mother and sister so I don't think he's a misogyst in "real life." But I know he has said in several recent interviews that his current "journey" is exploring masculinity and what truly makes a man a man. And that's his choice and good for him. My wish is that this journey takes a turn away from such physical, testosterone-based explorations and begins to explore how female power does not need to be destroyed, sublimated or martyred in order to support male growth. (And I wish all movies would do this--women being treated as afterthoughts or stereotypes is something that plagues a majority of movies. I just expect better of Jake's choices. The dead wife thing is an unfortunate doubleheader in Southpaw and Demolition I hope he doesn't soon repeat.)

And as much as I appreciate Jake's body, I think it's had enough attention as of late. :) So I look forward to the "braininess" of The Current War and Noctural Animals.

BlueJean said...

^^^^^^^^

Excuse me?

"My point is that Jake's earlier work often featured strong, vital female characters..."

Not just his earlier work. Have you seen 'Enemy'? The two women had power over Adam / Anthony. And Rene Russo's Nina in 'Nightcrawler'? She was as powerful as Lou was, when they first met. Maybe even more so. The fact that, in both movies, the male character(s) (Adam, Lou) "survive" in the end... it's just a coincidence. It's not a pattern that repeats itself ;)

The reason I can't think of anyone as "strong" in 'Prisoners' is probably because Detective Loki was single ;)

But seriously - you really think that on-screen Jake is a misogyst? I have never ever thought of his roles that way. Not once.

UltraViolet said...

Just FYI that BJ's "Excuse me?" was directed at a now deleted comment.

I agree that using the term misogyny to describe Jake's film roles of late is overreaching.

Interesting about Fuqua's new film. TMWMIS could still happen at some point but it seems like a long shot since both Jake and Antoine are so busy with other projects.

I'm excited about Jake being on the set of Inside Amy Schumer. I think her show is hilarious. Plus she's huge right now so it'll be good for Jake to be on her show, especially to show off his humorous side. He looks great as always :)

Surprising that its March, I thought Boston was still cold and snowy around March.

The production of Mark Wahlberg's "Boston Strong" is set to start in April (Boston Herald). There's certainly a lot of pressure on David Gordon Green and Jake to release "Stronger" earlier than "Boston Strong".

I'm a bit relieved that Jake will probably focus on other movies than "The Man Who Made it Snow".

"The Big Short" is the only "Best Picture" nominee I've seen so far. I'm surprised that it has won the PGA Award.

Anonymous said...

Jake would be well-advised to go separate ways from that Fuqua film. Seems doomed, no matter the title. I suppose Jake/Weinstein could find a different director for it, but Cartel so close in nature to it, why risk it?

Hope his Boston movie makes it out before Wahlberg's. "Hometown Boy" angle will get a lot of free press & buzz.

By the by because it still bugs me: Would a production partner really attend (and be backstage) at your one-off theatre performance?? I don't get why that MsBCCG is always around. She seemingly works in production, at HBO and CBS, but her work with him seems more publicist/assistant/manager in nature. I don't get it. Maybe she is his baby mama.

C said...

There is no msbccg. It's all an elaborate ruse concocted by a very lonely person.

Anonymous said...

But she posts so many "behind the scenes" photos--she's backstage at show right now at Miller tribute. His costars from Lil Shop of Horrors tweet her and act as if they know her. If it's a ruse (and I've often wondered if it was) she plays the ruse well.
And didn't someone say here Peter S. follows her?)

Anonymous said...

MsBCCG is a fake. The 'behind the scenes' photo she posted from tonight's event was stolen from another person on Instagram. See links:

https://www.instagram.com/p/9Mwt30sy3c/

http://i.imgbox.com/TTwyXqgo.jpg

She even stole the photo of the girl at Central Park that she posted today.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BA90MfDsqRV/

http://i.imgbox.com/VhT4duiJ.jpg

I really wish people would stop believing she is someone who knows Jake. It's not hard to see she's a fake. Everything she posts is stolen from someone else to give the illusion she's someone important / in NYC. I know UV would rather we not talk about her but I felt it needed to be said that she isn't who she claims to be.

(Please don't delete this post so other fans can see what she's doing too!)

Oh, and Peter also follows JakeG_Online. Is he friends with IHJ/Stephanie too? :) Looks to me like he follows lots of people, whether he knows them or not.

Sal (the real one) said...

I'm really looking forward to seeing all the photos from last night :)

I think the MSBCCG talk is a moot point. She's either affiliated with him and likes the attention, or is a very good fake. I don't think we should bother discussing it as it's (I'm assuming) what she wants.

FYI, Peter tweeted a while back that there was a 'glitch' in his twitter, and that it made him follow his followers. So the fact that he follows her and other fan sites, could mean nothing...or not.

Is anyone affected by the snow? Hope you're all safe and warm. London is pretty mild at the moment.

Ann said...

Wow! To put all that effort into faking pictures, smh.

I hope Jake pulls away from Weinstein, he's not what he used to be. None of his films got a best picture nomination this year at the Oscars, he doesn't have the pull with the industry that he once had. Jake can do better without him.

AEW21 said...

I totally agree-Harvey has become a punchline.

I wonder if Jake's parents will be involved in his A&E cult series. His dad has a lot of experience in episodic TV and mom could do scripts. Tho, I'm always hesitant to see family members work together. If it goes bad, so many relationships can be affected.

Re: MsBccg. A lot of her "family" pics on Instagram I've seen on Pinterest mood boards, so I was curious what was up with that. Are her family stock pic models? ;) It looks like past obsessions have included Bradley Cooper and Christopher Gorgam. Must be where got initials.

Anonymous said...

I don't think Jake is going to be that directly "hands on" with the cult series. I think he is just one of the producers, through his comapny, but I might be wrong.

sassy said...

Wow! Thanks for busting her once and for all. I was giving her the benefit of the doubt that she at least worked for him in some capacity. But between your links and the fact that none of the photos of him and his "entourage" leaving the event contained a pregnant blonde? Liar liar. How pathetic do you have to be to create a fake life? Sad.

I sorta figured. Around New Years she tweeted something about being at a bar with friends and they all took online quiz and she got Jake and he's her obsession.... It was quickly deleted. Think she mixed up her real account and her role-playing one.
And she's been pregnant for eons. And mysteriously has two other kids, then doesn't. And "lives" on whatever coast Jake happens to be at the time. So much effort. Why not just be a "fan?" Nothing wrong with that!
As for "costars" she communicates with-if look, all she does is insinuate they met thru Jake and people are too polite to question her. Tho their have been people on Instgram who have said she's posted their pictures as her own and asked to remove. That's when she goes "private."

Anonymous said...

i noticed in some of her instagram pics she was tagged as @msbcmc and only recently the G was added on.

AEW21 said...

... Removed because of inexcusable spelling issues. ;)

It's all some really immersive form of role-playing that she seems to have trouble keeping track of. Went from 2 to 4 kids; she's live-tweeting the birth now. I assume, tho, if Jake had an publicity-filled event tonight they she would have sucked the kid back in and waited until a quieter nite to grab attention. ;)
Thank God Jake had the photo with the ferret today--she can photoshop the baby into it later tonight. (I'm so evil.)

Back to Jake--amazes me how quickly the fella stubbles up. Light, almost bare last nite became pretty heavy scruff today. Someone should apply for a grant to study how quick he can get a decent beard going.

UltraViolet said...

The beauty of a verified account - you can delete your errors :)

And okay, I think we can move on from the discussion of Ms. Whoever She Is. No need to waste any more breath or bytes on her.

I wish we could see Jake's performance from last night, but there hasn't been much coverage of the event. Disappointing, actually. There was this in the WSJ:

Each was performed with gusto. Bradley Cooper and Nina Arianda (stepping in for Greta Gerwig) took on “After the Fall.” Alec Baldwin, Ellen Barkin and Jake Gyllenhaal tackled “All My Sons.” (Mr. Baldwin played the same role this summer in East Hampton.) John Turturro and Ron Leibman (there with wife Jessica Walter) did a scene from “The Price.”

At the top of the evening, Laurence Fishburne was Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman,” opposite Peter Sarsgaard, while, to close out the night, LaTanya Richardson Jackson performed a climactic scene as Linda Loman.

Not even many tweets. Just the couple mentioned. I thought I saw another one last night, but it must have been deleted. A shame, because it seems like it was a powerful event. Perhaps more will trickle out.

Scott, no need to apologize. It's perfectly okay to post the FB video. I had to download and rotate it so it would be watchable! Can't wait to see what ends up on the show. Though I'd prefer there not to be a ferret involved!

bobbyanna said...

UV, I went to Getty Images to see if there were any photos of Jake and struck out. The Arthur Miller foundation website might post something later on, but there is nothing right now. Daniel Day Lewis, who is married to Arthur Miller's daughter was there with her and their son, so that was nice.

It would have been wonderful to see Jake acting opposite Alec Baldwin aand Ellen Barkin!
I know Jake seems drawn to original new playwrights, but an Arthur Miller revival would be something to see.

I would LOVE to see Laurence Fishburne and Latanya Jackson in a revival of Death of a Salesman. I saw her perform in A Raise in in the Sun on Broadway opposite Denzel Washington and she is brilliant. ( Denzel was singularly brilliant as Walter Lee. The man can do anything.)

It was more about non personal stuff but it was all good. The guy pretty much said that Jake has come to realize that he has to create and follow his own path. That he let go of listening to what others thought. The guy who didn't know much about Jake seemed really impressed and a bit in awe with Jake's aura.

The Hollywood Reporter: Jake Gyllenhaal's Boston Marathon Bombing Movie Gets Financing From Bold Films (Exclusive)
Bold Films has come on board to produce and fully finance Stronger, a Boston Marathon Bombing feature project that is to star Jake Gyllenhaal. At the same time, Gyllenhaal, who has a first look deal with Bold, the company behind his acclaimed movie Nightcrawler, is expanding his role in the drama, becoming one of its producers. The move makes Stronger the first film project out of the gate of the star’s production banner Nine Stories that the actor co-runs with partner Riva Marker. Lionsgate, which was previously financing, remains on board as domestic and international distributor. David Gordon Green is directing Stronger, which is heading towards an April 4 production start as it adapts the book by Jeff Bauman, a survivor who lost both his legs in the 2013 attack.
Walters said boarding Stronger is part of Bold's overall plan of "our expansion into bigger budgeted films."

BlueJean said...

Good news! :) Thanks, Hagen!

Scott said...

Why did Lionsgate drop financing on a hot script? Is that a bad sign?

Anonymous said...

Lionsgate didn’t exactly ‘drop’ financing, they’re still the US and WW distributors of Stronger.
My understanding is that Jake brought Bold Films to the table along with his production company, Nine Stories. Bold decided to fully finance what will be their first bigger budgeted production, which means they strongly :) believe in it, and Lionsgate happily accepted more people, as in more money to the table.
