Someone on the AwardsWatch forums read the Demolition script and gives a critique. Not overwhelmingly positive and pretty iffy on any awards potential. We shall see, I guess.

Note above: I didn't read it carefully. Definite spoilers in there.

Jake went to a Fashion Week party:

Opening Ceremony

Indeed, it was a giant pizza party that both designers threw for their staff and friends that occurred on the second floor. Jake Gyllenhaal sat there in a corner, chugging a beer. He dodged cameras, ducking whenever he saw iPhone flashes. So was Jonze, who sat at a booth, biting into a slice, not to be bothered. Lim ensured her friends were well fed, putting slices onto paper plates.

From WWD:

Down in the Lower East Side, Jake Gyllenhaal was waiting for his car. “God damn, it’s cold,” he shivered. His date, a leggy brunette, chattered her teeth. They were outside — inexplicably, as the lobby was a perfectly fine place to wait — Happy Endings, the site of the Opening Ceremony after party. “F--k, f--k,” he said, trading up expletives after a gust of biting wind. He was the first to bow out of the romp. Inside, in a roped-off booth, Humberto Leon and Spike Jonze curled up to Santigold. “Nine years ago, at a Christmas party with Jason Schwartzman,” Leon recalled of first meeting Jonze. “He was wearing one of our jackets and I was like, ‘Hey! That’s Opening Ceremony!’”

And Jason Biggs is a fan, FWIW:

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
Constellations with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson. Man, they were both incredible.

After reading the review on script shadow, I also don't see it for awards.

"Someone on the AwardsWatch forums"

Wait. Wait. Wait.

I'm reading there now. Someone there commented: "I think he's better in Love and Other Drugs than he's been in anything since."

Whaaaaaaaaat?! That's a joke, right?! :(

bobbyanna said...

LOLOL! I've always thought LAOD was an "important" film, regardless of what some (most) critics said, because it definitely helped raise Jake's profile... everybody needs a little eye candy in their lives. : ) Actually, I wish LAOD had been better, because Anne and Jake had great chemistry and they were adorable together.

bobbyanna said...

The second Hollywood Reporter Oscar voter interview thought Nightcrawler was "masterful," and will vote for it in Best Original Screenplay category. That doesn't indicate a groundswell, but I'm glad someone mentioned it.

Hagen said...

The latest edition of the "Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots" mentions Jake's snub: [Nightcrawler's] Jake Gyllenhaal [not getting nominated]? Come on.

bobbyanna said...

If anyone's interested, the Independent Spirit Awards will air live on IFC network, @ 5 PM EST. Jake's not there, but he's nominated. : )

They often repeat, but I don't have that information. it's possible they may live stream it too, so you might be able to see it online.

Hagen said...

Thanks for the hint, bobbyanna. That's earlier than I expected, so I might watch it. According to Awardswatch Dan Gilroy is favored to win "Best First Feature" and "Best Screenplay", but there are strong competitors, of course.

Hagen said...

"Nightcrawler" wins "Best First Feature". Yay!

Hagen said...

One of my fave Q&As of the season was the time Jake Gyllenhaal's giant head Skyped in to join me and Dan Gilroy. (picture)

And "Nightcrawler" wins "Best Screenplay"!

bobbyanna said...

Yessss!

Mary said...

Yay for Dan so happy for him and for Jake too!!!!

UltraViolet said...

Yay, Dan! A shame Jake didn't win the actor award but not a surprise. Keaton's Narcissus joke was pretty good.

In the end, just nice to hear Nightcrawler called for a win.

Monica said...

So happy for Nightcrawler!

fanboys are angry at the comments of Dan Gilroy about comic book movies! lol

Congratulations to Dan and NC, the win is well
Deserved.

I'll probably watch some of the Oscars, because I like Neil Patrick Harris, but I'm not going to miss Downton Abbey tonight. : )

Chica said...

Nightcrawler was the only trul indie movie to win last night! The winners of the. ISA are most likely to win the Oscar.

Between Downton Abbey and The Walking Dead I will probably be following the Oscars on FB or Twitter, lot more fun!

Monica said...

I'm missing the big stars at the Oscars.

bobbyanna said...

I know, monica. It seems very flat this year.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

NPH is bombing so far and Adam Levine sounded awful! Jk Simmons win was expected, congratulations!

bobbyanna said...

I agree, OONP. NPH seems off tonight. I love him on the Tonys but he doesn't seem as sharp as he usually is.

bobbyanna said...

I was happy to see Glory win for best Song, and I'm enjoying all the love for Grand Budapest Hotel. The other big surprise was GaGa. Lady GaGa was amazing. OMG, what an incredible voice. She can sing anthing.

bobbyanna said...

I just don't see how having four guys getting screenwriting credits (Birdman) compared to one guy for Nightcrawler. Dan Gilroy deserved to win original screenplay. : (

Monica said...

Poor Keaton :/

Poor Keaton: /

It was so boring. I still think the best was 2003 with Steve Martin. They should bring back Steve Martin for next year.

I never thought Boyhood was going to win, but at least I was expecting to win script or director.

UltraViolet said...

So glad Eddie Redmayne won. He is the only one of the nominees I felt good about winning over Jake.

Bobbyanna, I laughed at the number of writers for Birdman, as well.

Annoyed by the Birdman sweep. But this was a lackluster year, a lackluster show. Glory and, unexpectedly, the Sound of Music were the highlights of the night. I like NPH but I think he was constrained.

UltraViolet said...

Love these tweets. This one popular:

Imma let you finish... But Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in Night Crawler was one of the best of all time…

Duncan going to the mat for NC if you read the replies.

Duncan Jones ‏@ManMadeMoon
I would just like to say... Nightcrawler? Just a little bit robbed.

And this, from a Buzzfeed editor:

@JarettSays:
I would give Blanchett a million dollars to say, "And the Oscar goes to...Jake Gyllenhaal for 'Nightcrawler'" right now.

Yes!:

One actor not included in that tight race is Jake Gyllenhaal, who earned SAG and Globe noms for “Nightcrawler.” Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg, who distributed the film, didn’t mince words on the red carpet. “Jake Gyllenhaal not getting nominated is an outrage,” he said.

Monica said...

Eddie RedCarpet gave the worst speech of the night. He's so narcissistic and thirsty for Oscar, if it was a woman ...

bobbyanna said...

UV, I was happy for Eddie too. I felt if not Jake than Eddie or Michael Keaton, but I preferred Eddie.

"Constrained." LOL! yeah.
Monica, I agree, I liked Steve Martin, I liked when Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin did it together, and I liked Ellen last year. I really enjoyed her.

I think this year the writers and the producers of the show have to share ownership of the lackluster presentation. The writing was embarrassingly bad.

I will say that with the exception of Adam Levine, who I thought was awful, the musical performances were OK.

Excepting Gaga, who was better than OK. She was simply amazing. Her voice is incredible. Who knew. I hardly expected a tribute to Sound of Music to be one of the highlights, but it was.

Chica said...

Lady Gaga was the highlight, what a voice!
I was rooting for Michael too but Eddie's win wasn't a shock and I can live with him winning, at least it wasn't Cooper.

bobbyanna said...

"...at least it wasn't Cooper"

LOLOL!

Chica you're a mind reader.

Piruleta said...

Another two of voters mentioned Jake:

"BEST ACTOR: I also thought that [Nightcrawler's] Jake Gyllenhaal gave an amazing performance — his heart and soul was in that movie — and it's a shame that he was left out yet again."

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: I was torn between two: Birdman and Nightcrawler. Both were very good. Nightcrawler is a tremendous script — great lines, great characters, great ending — and the picture didn't get enough attention elsewhere. [Jake] Gyllenhaal deserved a [best actor] nomination.

THR

Oh, well, let's think about the next projects :D

Anonymous said...

"...at least it wasn't Cooper"
LOL!
I thought the same thing... but probably this means that we didn't get rid of him and next year he will be even more obsessed!! :)
Maybe I'm the only one not so enthusiastic about Redmayne: despite his undeniable technical abilities, he never managed to move me (but I was annoyed by the whole movie, so that's perhaps why...)... And I was also sorry for Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rosamund Pike (such great movies and performance!)...
Thank you for the pictures, UV... so we discovered another Southpaw tattoo...'father', the theme is clear!

This made me laugh - on an old instagram photo of Jake at the stage door:

you met him???

Yes ma'am

tell the story! please!

My friend and I had front row seats to see him on Broadway. Then he came out after and said hello. Oh and we're getting married now

Rita Ora talks Southpaw and Jake's body.

She doesn't really drool the way so many stories make it seem. But she was impressed :)

UltraViolet said...

Porifera, that Duncan Jones tweet is hilarious. The makers replied, I think. Won't it be great if they really made one?

Tina, I would also have been really irritated to see BCooper win. I've been a fan since Alias but enough already with the Iscar nominations.

Love seeing some Jake and NC mentions on the Oscar ballot reporting. Too bad there weren't more.

Tweety said...

I love this post UV, I'm amazed how you find all these old/new pics ♥♥♥

The Academy Awards were a mixed bag for me. It had some really wonderful moments like John Legend , Lady Gaga and Patricia Arquette's speech but overall it was a dud. NPH was definitely off his game and with the exception of American Sniper and Selma, a lot of people haven't seen the rest of the movies nominated.

There were no surprises and it was of course at least an hour too long.

I can't wait to see both films.

Villeneuve will direct the sequel for Blade Runner, I've seen some tweets mention that it would be cool if Jake joined the project. What do you think?

I want to see them work together again so why not :D

Some of the tweets:

-Denis Villeneuve to do 'Blade Runner' sequel? AMAZING. Better get Gyllenhaal involved.

-The best part about the "Denis Villeneuve to direct BLADE RUNNER sequel" news is there's now a great chance it will star Jake Gyllenhaal.

-Denis Villeneuve is *the* most excellent choice for Blade Runner 2. I hope he's packing Jake Gyllenhaal.

-holy shit Blade Runner 2 will be directed by the guy who did "Prisoners" and "Enemy" hopefully Jake Gyllenhaal is in it too.

-If Denis Villeneuve is directing the Blade Runner follow-up, can we therefore have Jake Gyllenhaal as a Blade Runner please?

-Now I'm wishing they would just make Gyllenhaal play Deckard. Villeneuve is the real deal.

-Also, if Denis Villeneuve does agree to direct Blade Runner 2, I’m highly in favour of Gyllenhaal as the lead.

-New Blade Runner with Denis Villeneuve, Harrison Ford, Jake Gyllenhaal would be killer.

-#BladeRunner is getting remade by Denis Villeneuve. Does this mean that Gyllenhaal's character(s) were actually replicants?

Monica said...

I'm not happy with Blade Runner 2. I love Villeneuve, but it's a unnecessary project, so I hope that Jake will stay away.

Hagen said...

I would really like to see Jake working with Denis Villeneuve again, but I'm not convinced that a "Blade Runner" sequel would be the right project for them.

Ironically LAOD director Edward Zwick will also release a movie on September 18th: "Pawn Sacrifice" starring Peter Sarsgaard.

If you want to donate some money (current bid: $2,750): Private Screening of "Southpaw" ft. Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams with Escape Artists Producers in LA
In addition to the screening this package includes lunch or dinner with the producers and subject to their availability the writer and director to discuss the film as well as an invitation from the producers and The Weinstein Co. to attend the premiere of the film if one is scheduled in Los Angeles or New York prior to the film’s opening. Donated By: Escape Artists & The Weinstein Co
(Charitybuzz)

According to IMDb No Doubt will contribute a song to the soundtrack of "Demolition". Not sure, if it's true though.

bobbyanna said...

WOW. I was talking about this with some friends last night. personally, I liked the first Blade Runner. I think enough time has passed so that this sequel could be fresh and interesting. Harrison Ford's interest is reassuring.

I'm not convinced Denis is the best person to direct it. If I were making a sequel of Blade Runner, I'd look at Duncan Jones who seems to have an affinity with Science Fiction concepts. LOL! Duncan got a gorgeous performance out of Jake in SC.

I'd love to see Jake & Denis work together again but not sure of this one. I would love to see Jake do a really smart, well made Science fiction movie.

Since it looks like they already have Harrison Ford on board, I'll speculate that they will go for someone not as well known and probably less expensive.

Remember Tron? Jeff Bridges did the original in 1982. When they brought him back for the sequel in 2010, they put him with Garrett Hedlund?

BlueJean said...

I'd love for Jake and Denis to work together again! Agree about Duncan Jones though - he might be the better choice for a movie like 'Blade Runner 2'.

It'll be interesting to see what will happen with it. It will undoubtably be a big project.

Hagen said...

Denis Villeneuve will have gained some experience with science fiction before he'll direct "Blade Runner 2". His next movie is a science fiction thriller called "Story of Your Life" starring Amy Adams.
I hope that "Ezekiel Moss" will be made and that Jake is still attached to this project.

Hagen said...

The comedy "The Bronze" will expand nationwide on July 31. Currently there are five wide releases scheduled for that date (Boxofficemojo). Weinstein will probably have to think about another release date for "Southpaw".

Interview with Jake and Ruth

Thanks for posting the link, Piruleta. That was fun to watch. :-)

UltraViolet said...

It was a fun watch. Thanks, Piruleta. I had made up a post but didn't get to finish it last night. I'll try for later tonight.

They have a fun chemistry. The male interviewer was an odd duck. But it was fun to watch Jake learn a little about Ruth's early theater "work." I love Ruth's sense of humor and her general relaxed, no-BS vibe.

About Blade Runner: I've never seen the original. If this is a good script and it's going to be a big movie, I'd love to see Jake in it. I want him in a big, prestige movie. But not a train wreck :)

bobbyanna said...

Thanks! That was a cute interview. The more I see of Ruth the more I like her. I think she and Jake complement each other very well. I wish I could've seen them in the play. I rarely see a play get so much praise. Almost unanimous raves.

(Of course Jake's hair and beard are back in full bloom. :/ )

Extra said...

Thanks for posting the video, they really have a nice chemistry.I wish I could see the play too Bobbyanna, sigh.

UV, Blade Runner is a classic Sci fi movie but I don't know why they are considering sequel after all this time, HW doesn't seem to have any original ideas.

bobbyanna said...

"I hope that "Ezekiel Moss" will be made and that Jake is still attached to this project. "

I forgot to say thanks, Hagen, for reminding me. I agree with you. I'd really like to see Jake follow through with the Ezekiel Moss project.

Extra you are so right! It seems like Hollywood has very little in the way of original stories to offer.

UltraViolet said...

At least Jake didn't declare himself a Mayweather fan. Ugh.

That Grantland article got a lot of comments on Facebook and twitter. It was amusing.

As is the description of the people waiting for Jake at the stage door.

Finally, I thought this was a cool encounter:

Like the play itself, I paced backstage after the performance with my mind considering all the scenarios that could play out when I met its stars – Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson – for the first time. Encounters with actors and actresses can be a real mixed bag depending on their personalities that seem to rapidly shift from on-stage character to backstage human being.

Luckily, the positive scenario of a warm, receptive meeting came to light. Handshakes were exchanged and typical introductions were made. Accompanied by two friends eager to explore a professional future in the arts, I asked the question most dread to be confronted with: “What advice can you give us?”

I don’t know why I’ve asked it. Perhaps it feels like an unavoidable question. I’ve been asked it many times, and each one triggers just as snooze-worthy a response as the prior one. In a quick moment, I conjure together a few words on never giving up and staying true to yourself. You know the whole rundown. Grimly after asking the question, I began to consider a similar answer from Gyllenhaal I knew was coming.

Only it didn’t. He began with the customary reply, “God, I never know what to say when asked this.” His arms were folded and eyes focused on the floor beneath us. He then began to jumble together something inspirational and, shall I add, a tad stunning to this listener.

“I’m a big fan of hip-hop,” Gyllenhaal said. “Drake has this line in one of his songs. I’m sure I won’t say it correctly, but it goes something like, ‘Being humble isn’t as good as being aware.’”

Jake’s quote attempt was close enough. The actual line, from Drake’s “The Catch Up,” says, “Bein’ humble don’t work as well as bein’ aware.” As I stood in silence, slowly nodding my head, I thought my God, what a brilliant piece of advice. The common expression of many to “stay humble” is adequate, but fails to deliver much of a punch to someone young, hungry and full of ambition.

“Being aware” is more fitting. To live in the moment where you recognize your full strengths and worth, while acknowledging your weaknesses and insecurities, is the definitive sign of someone who has reached the pinnacle of personal understanding. Perhaps actors like Gyllenhaal and singers like Drake would find such a phrase more substantial, but even to a red-headed boy who grew up on a farm in West Tennessee, the words radiated with great importance.

I saw constellations yesterday and I was absolutely blown away. Such an interesting play deftly delivered by Ruth and jake. It was intense, funny, sad, poignant all at once and it was frankly exhausting to watch them switch intentions and scenes literally on a dime. Infact jake looked positively exhausted after the show at the stage door. I had a brief but lovely moment with Jake and as one of the other girls standing next to me aptly said, he looked 'delicious'. Infact there was some hilarious fan girling all around! One girl said she wanted to ask him what beauty products he uses cos he's just so pretty! And I agree, jake just gets better with age both in his appearance and talent. I'm seeing it again next week so I might have more updates then.

Yay, malavika! So glad you got to see it and that you enjoyed it. And even more, you got to meet Jake after the play. Wonderful!

He always looks a little dazed after a performance. I interpret it as part exhaustion and part defense mechanism at the stage door.

It's wonderful that you'll get to see it again. I'm going next weekend, as well. I can't wait.

It's hard to belive the run is almost over.

UltraViolet said...

A couple of play stories from Facebook and Instagram that made me smile:

I'M SO JELLY. Did you ask him about Southpaw!! I WANT TO SEE HIS BLUE EYES IN PERSON TOO 19h

I completely forgot to ask! He was moving pretty fast, but this girl behind me had told me she'd been a fan for 20 years and I got his attention back and told him and he was like "20 years?!" and he came back to take a picture with her, it was so dang sweet.

This woman really went to great lengths to see Jake:

my twin sister, who has to be your truly most adorable fan, has just gone to hell and back as hell froze over NYC en route to see you. It was a trains, planes and automobile moment, but the lady with her sheer focus on getting to see you live on Broadway made what the rest of the world thought wouldnt happen, happen. Here are pics of the adventures of Miriam Cristina who battled her way through the battle axes at Delta, switched flights to catch the last flight out of Atlanta to DC, hustled her way to Union Station to catch the 3:45AM train into Penn Station all for the lovely purpose of seeing you.

just saw jake gylkenhall at Broadway and cried 5 times during the play. It was sad and funny and crazy- only 70 minutes long bc you got invested in the characters in first 5 minutes. I didn't meet him which I'm fine about...but it was weird seeing him in a small venue... Surreal, Like seeing Clint Eastwood at whole foods...but he was amazing so was Ruth and so was show!

I wish she had gotten to meet Jake.

UltraViolet said...

Here's part of the woman's travel ordeal:

God... I think I'm getting taken to Atlanta?! Hallelujah! They cancelled my flight - all flights actually were full all airports in New York, my dreams were about to be squashed...they wanted to give me a refund...then I had a seismic heart attack...they put me on a phone with someone...Then the ticket lady felt bad for me and kept her sweet eye on things while I sat and felt so saaaaad... And she found one and only seat..on a plane... At 9:45 pm arriving at midnight: like mother fucking Cinderella. I'm not sure I should be happy until i land. Pray I get stand by on earlier ride... Pray I get there.

Oh wow! I want to see that too! I finally got my hands on Anatoli Bukreev's book, it's really interesting and you get to know more about Scott Fischer.

:))
I read it too, Piruleta... Yes, very interesting... I hope they mixed the sources for the movie; 'Into Thin Air' by Krakauer and 'Everest' by Boukreev tell two quite different point of views of the same story... Really, I can't wait for it!!

That's nice, Tina! I started to read it this weekend :)

Everest will have a PG-13 rating

"For whatever reason, seeing a PG-13 rating for Baltasar Kormakur's Everest is a little upsetting for me and lowers my anticipation a little. Not because I felt it was a story that needs a bunch of blood and gore, but I felt given its focus it would be a little more intense. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see as the rating does promise some "intense peril and disturbing images."

Everest & Southpaw both out next year? Maybe they'll hold Demolition back.

Maybe they'll hold Demolition back.

why?

BTW I hope not.

Weinstein has more horses in his stable than Southpaw. Fox Searchlight seems to be banking on Demolition (a darker, more eccentric The Descendants per their campaign history.) Unless they are content with only pushing Brooklyn and A Bigger Splash for actress and tech credits.

Oh I see. I don't know how Demolition will be sold to the Oscars, it's odd. Jake's character is odd. Unless they changed some things to make bait.

I've just seen this picture of Tom Goodman-Hill in "Everest". It could have been Jake just as well. There will be many bearded men with ski glasses in the movie for sure. ;-)

I wish people would just let him be. Poor guy gets followed / photographed / papped (practically) everywhere he goes.

I really like the selfies or other pics people take with him whenever he's signing autographs or so, but these spying, intrusive pics - no. But I guess it's the price of fame... :(

Leonard Lopate's interview with Jake and Ruth on IHJ is really entertaining, about beards, beekeepers and beehives among other things.
