Meet the filmmakers

We saw that poster first in September, but now, it's official. And comes with a release date for the United States: March 14.

On Sunday, Canadians got a chance to hear Jake Gyllenhaal and Denis Villeneuve discuss their first collaboration, Enemy, selected as one of Canada's Top Ten Film Festival.

Also back in September, Jake, Denis and Hugh Jackman did a Prisoners event at the Apple store in London. It's now available on youtube:

There are some pretty funny moments in it - definitely worth a watch.

You can also listen to the Source Code MTF session here. I don't remember hearing or watching that whole event before.

Rodeo FX has published some stills from "Enemy":

Rodeo FX created 60 visual effects shots for Denis Villeneuve’s film Enemy. Based on "The Double" by Nobel Laureate José Saramago, Enemy features Jake Gyllenhaal, a college professor, who gets spooked when he watches a movie and realizes the actor looks exactly like him.

Using a judicious combination of live and CG elements, Rodeo helped bringing Denis Villeneuve’s vision to life. Although the story is futuristic, the goal was to achieve a documentary-style, seamless look to keep the focus on the intrigue.

Therefore, Rodeo had to find a clever yet imperceptible way to “duplicate” Jake Gyllenhaal, so that he would be talking to his doppelganger and even, be physically interacting with him. A crew from Rodeo, the sole VFX studio involved in the project, was present on set to assist Denis Villeneuve for the shooting of these very technical scenes.

Some matte painting work was also achieved to enhance Toronto Metropolis, and a clever combination of a real and a CG spider was used to impersonate that intriguing creature.

All in all, the main challenge was to create seamless effects using mostly live, thus realistic solutions that required a lot of element shooting but, above all, a lot of thinking!

I should clarify those questions I asked were about his next role not Jake personally. Jake has become known lately for immersing himself in the character and I was curious and excited about the role the actor is playing not the man. I have my own thank you.

Anon. I'm sorry, I did not realize your curiosity were related to the Jake's new role, Your questions read without explanation seemed a little obsessive/compulsive, as some so-called Jake's "fans "tend to be a bit psychotic (not here thankfully GB is a happy island thanks to God ) I was a little too defensive, I'm sorry again.
I'm also curious to see how Jake is preparing physically and emotionally for a role that promises to be intense and full of exciting challenges! :D

Tom Goodman-Hill who plays Neal Beidleman, a mountain guide in Scott Fischer's team, has been in South Tyrol at least since Sunday:

The guy next to me on the plane turned out to be an actor going to one of the smaller resorts for 6 weeks to film a movie about an attempt on Everest. Apparently they decided that doing that in Nepal was too risky for the crew health wise, so the Tirol is the new Himalaya, with a bit of help from CGI. I was too embarrassed to ask his name in case I should have known it! The film is called, imaginatively, Everest, and he plays a guy called Neal Beidleman, who survives. It’s a real story and rather sad he told me. And of course he will be barely recognisable as all togged up in mountain gear! I spotted another guy when we got off who also had a beard so I’m guessing he was another actor – my neighbour said nobody had met up to that point. Now I have checked it out – there’s an article about the film on Wikipedia and it seems I met Tom Goodman-Hill.

American distributor A24 has published a new poster for "Enemy". I think I prefer the other two posters, but the new one is quite cool, too.

Entertainment Weekly: Denis Villeneuve: "Jake really fell in love with this idea of exploring this character, a man struggling with intimacy. It was something that we had a lot of ideas about, both of us. It’s a subject that really inspired him. This whole project is borne in that relationship, the bonding between Jake and I.”

When the film premiered at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival, critics applauded and everyone was gobsmacked by the film’s twisty, existential ending. “The movie is a bit mind-bugging and it’s constructed as a spiral,” says the filmmaker. “It’s a bit normal that people are a bit confused, but you’re supposed to experience pleasure with that confusion, not frustration. It was designed to be very playful, meaning it’s really a movie like some of the films that I liked when I was young, like the Twilight Zone, for instance, and some Kubrick movies that created inside of me that kind of strong vertigo feeling.”

The poster for the film is an equally disorienting visual that ignores its leading man’s celebrity. “Enemy for me is really an artistic piece,” says Villeneuve. “It was done with no compromises, a real act of cinema. And I think the poster reflects that idea, that it’s about exploration of identity. Sometimes, it’s very healthy to make cinema with just art in mind and you don’t think about the box-office. What I love about [the distributor] A24 and the poster they came up with is that it totally reflects that.”

Well, it's a moutain. ;-)

I've found an article about the South Tyrol, not about the film, but about the area. I found it very interesting. It's not a region I am very familiar with.

South Tyrol is very beautiful. I visited the region with my parents when I was an adolescent. But Kormakur can't film anything that's actually typical for the region (except the mountains, of course), as it would look out of place in "Everest".

In April I will travel to Morocco and visit places like Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and Marrakech where "Prince of Persia" was shot. I'm looking forward to that.

From all quotes brought here by Hagen the kudos, the compliments paid to Jake are removed. Case in point Entertainment Weekly.
Villeneuve’s quote starts with “Jake is a very versatile and very creative actor, and it wasn’t very difficult to create two characters. He really fell in love with this idea...”
Hagen’s quote: “Denis Villeneuve: "Jake really fell in love with this idea…”
Hagen brings here so much information but is there a reason for taking out the praise for Jake from the reviews?

UltraViolet said...

It's simple: Hagen is actually Ryan Gosling, posting here to lower Jake's appeal to fans and thus to filmmakers.

It's a time-consuming strategy, which is why we haven't heard much from RG lately. That whole directing thing is just an elaborate cover.

Hagen said...

:sigh:
I've posted reviews with praise for Jake's performances quite a few times. We already know that Denis Villeneuve and Jake are best buddies and what Villeneuve thinks about Jake. We heard that during the "Prisoners" campaign. That's not news. Usually I avoid posting complete long articles. I'm posting links to articles and some excerpts or shortened versions of the articles. Whenever you think I've missed something interesting you can add that, of course. And there's no need to talk to me in third person. ;-)

Also, lest my sarcasm be misinterpreted, Hagen posts more links on this blog than I do these days. She has kept us up-to-date more than anyone on Everest filming and Enemy happenings. And she has linked to a LOT of positive reviews for Prisoners and Enemy.

Clearly that article was mostly a rehash of other articles and every sentence didn't need to be repeated.

inquiring mind said...

Thank you for answering Hagen. My username is Diana.
It was just the most recent example. I remember not clicking one of your links last fall since your quote was exclusively about Denis, making me think the critic made no specific comments about Jake's acting. Eventually I read it from a different site and there it was: a paragraph complimenting Jake's acting. I still see no point in cutting out the praises, even repeated ones, here on a Jake Gyllenhaal fansite where people are interested in reading good things written about him. Again, thank you sincerely. I appreciate the information you bring here.

Too funny about Hagen being Ryan Gosling. I always thought Gatsby would have been better with Ryan and Jake as the leads but there is still hope they will work together one day. Wasn't December before Christmas a better date? Great BO chances, awards nominations chances. I suppose the 2 months delay (January instead of November) has something to do with the new release date.

I think the Universal realized it wasn't for prizes based on the script. December is usually a crowded month with films for Oscar, and this year with the last part of The Hobbit and Into The Woods. I think that the studio wants to avoid competing with these films.

Neither did I know about the 3D. Fits the material I suppose, breathtaking visuals, but makes it more commercial than artistic. Universal's press release gives the same vibe:

"Inspired by the incredible events surrounding a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, EVEREST documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest of elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. Starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal, the epic adventure will be directed by Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Contraband) and produced by Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, as well as Nicky Kentish Barnes......The film will shoot on location in Nepal on the foothills of Everest, the Italian Dolomites and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K."

"a treacherous attempt to reach the summit"?
They all reached the summit at different times, hell a.k.a. the storm started on the descent. Controversial or bad choices were made. Delays happened because the ropes weren't fixed in advance. Too many people (34) ascended on the same day. Some developped high altitude sickness in the Death Zone (even the experienced Scott Fischer).....but treacherous?

"the epic adventure"
I understand epic but it seems more tragic than adventurous to me.

"and Jake Gyllenhaal" suggests his part has less screen time, as expected, while still being poignant.

Which can't be said about Rapunzel's prince in the movie version of Into The Woods. I read the script from Monica's link. You should read it, Realist. Seeing how small in every sense the role is could make you feel a little better about Jake dropping out. Into The Woods may be nominated for Golden Globes: best picture, musical score, Streep most likely, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick maybe, Depp just because. Slim chances for the princes.Rapunzel's has even less than the 5% chances of Cinderella's prince. I wanted to hear Jake sing too, I'm waiting for a better part though.

UltraViolet said...

I think Jake was going to be Cinderella's prince, though. Then when he dropped out, they gave it to Pine. I know that's not the story they are telling now.

The "and Jake Gyllenhaal" bothers me a little. As did Hagen's statement many posts back that Scott Fischer's story is dull.

I thought it would be fun for Jake to have a movie released on his birthday, but it probably would have gotten drowned by all the Prestige Films.

Would be nice if Jake got to be in one of them again.

Jake's fan said...

"I think Jake was going to be Cinderella's prince, though."

I do too, Ultraviolet. But I have a different theory: Jake auditioned and got the part of Cinderella's prince. During the May-June negociations, hot-shot Disney producers wrongfully decided Pine had more starpower, so they switched the parts. Pine was coming off Star Trek II, with big expectations for Jack Ryan (who turned out to be a flop). Jake was coming off indie End of Watch and an off-Broadway play. At that time even Warner thought Prisoners was Hugh's ticket to Oscar. In Sept-Oct, Prisoners became a showcase for Jake's talent, but he had already left Into The Woods since July. I imagine there was some sweating on Disney's part when Jake seemed on his way to awards nominations.

Scott Fischer's story isn't dull. It's sad and compelling, only less eventful than Weather's or Hall's. Hagen may have come to this conclusion by reading "Into Thin Air" which is mainly the story of Adventure Consultants expedition. They all stayed at the Base Camp during the weeks of acclimatization, treks to Camp I, Camp II. On May 10 they began together the summit attempt from Camp IV. But Krakauer doesn't tell all the stories about Fischer's expedition. There's Boukreev's "The Climb" or Lene's "Climbing High". Kormakur said the film will be sourced from various books and interviews with survivors. If he keeps his promise.
Fischer led the '87 Everest expedition, later became the first American to summit Lhotse, climbed K2 in '92 and Everest again in '94. On K2 he was involved in a daring rescue of a french climber.
In '96, until the summit day (when he started feeling sick) Fischer was very active, making several trips up and down from Camp I and II to Base Camp with clients who developped HAPE. He was gregarious, the life of the party and pep talked his clients. The sherpas loved him, Beidleman and Kruse were his friends. On the other hand he was tough: Krakauer says he castigated Boukreev for his poor decisions.
On the descent, when he couldn't move anymore, he spend 7 excruciating hours with Lopsang Jangbu Sherpa, then he pleaded with Lopsang to descend without him, threatening to jump off the cliff. His last hours with Makalu Gau were agonizing. Imagine what Jake can do with this story, if allowed freedom.

I missed an emotional highlight in Fischer's story. That sounds a bit harsh given his death, but he didn't call his pregnant wife or resurrected from the dead. There's a reason that the project initially focused on Rob Hall (though Beck Weathers' rescue will be pretty cinematic, too). I just didn't get the feeling that Fischer was essential to the story. He didn't drive the plot in any way. And it doesn't help that he was sick on the most important day. Anatoli Boukreev, one of Fischer's mountain guides, had a decidedly more important role in "Into Thin Air". I'm confident though that the script writers will come up with some entertaining stories for Jake, maybe about his friendship / rivalry with Rob Hall. And it could still turn out to be an interesting character study of a strong personality. I agree with you in that point.

Variety: Baltasar Kormakur Chats About ‘Everest,’ ‘Vikings’ and ‘On The Job’

Right now you’re doing “Everest”? How is it going?

It’s fantastic. I was coming from Kathmandu all the way to the Everest, we walked with the actors. It was a really hard but beautiful shoot. I remember thinking how lucky I was, getting paid to be there. It was wonderful. The cast is blown away by it. Now I’m in Italy. We’re starting to shooting here the day after tomorrow.

How is it working with such as great cast, including Jake Gyllenhall, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, Emily Watson? I hear a lot that American actors are exceptionally committed?

I think good actors are good wherever they’re from. Maybe there’s more commitment on this higher level, because there’s so much risk. I think we have great actors in Europe. I’ve never seen that kind of commitment there, though, that artistic, mental, and physical commitment. On the other hand, American actors can be prima donnas and difficult to deal with. Which I understand, when you’re on a high level. And we all want is a life as good as possible, a house as good as we can afford, a car as good as we can afford. Then it becomes about the trailer and the hotel you live in. You don’t want to live a shitty life. I understand it. I don’t always agree with it. But I see where it comes from.

But on “Everest” were you’re working under such extreme conditions your cast members can’t really be prima donnas?

Yeah, we can’t afford that, we stayed on shitty hotels in the mountains with one electric blanket. The actors had to do everything like they were in film school again. Yesterday I walked from 9 am to 3am just to scout, because we couldn’t get helicopters. It’s not too far away from “The Deep,” but bigger, shooting in more countries, it’s kind of the same mentality, where I was swimming in the ocean for a month to make that film. And it’ll be realistic as possible. Of course, i’d love to shoot at the Summit of “Everest,” but then I might come back without half of my cast. So we’re also shooting in a studio. We do as we can, we have to use film technique. It’s like using hair extensions instead of a wig. In hair extensions some is real.

Realist said...

Wow just watch the new trailer on Yahoo, thanks Hagen.

Its awesome, Jake is hot as hell. Loved how they used one of his photos from an old photo shoot for his character's actor resume.
