This and that

A grab bag of Jake Gyllenhaal news today. First up, Jake covers the December issue of Elle Men Thailand. Maybe they will have more of these gorgeous shots inside:

Enemy has been selected for the 13th annual Canada's Top Ten Film Festival:

The 10-day festival runs January 3 to 12, 2014 at TIFF Bell Lightbox and features public screenings of the selected films, accompanied by introductions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers. On January 5, the Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival welcomes Academy Award-nominees Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal to TIFF Bell Lightbox to discuss their recent collaborations.

In Conversation With… Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal — Sunday, January 5 at 3:30 p.m. With the Hollywood studio film Prisoners and the independent Canadian film Enemy, Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal have struck up a potent director-actor relationship. In this conversation with Cameron Bailey, they will discuss inspiration, working methods and the distance between Hollywood and Toronto.

From an article on the casting for Prisoners:

One conversation was about who would play Detective Loki, the investigating officer and an outsider in the town. (Star Hugh Jackman was already on board to play father Keller Dover when Barden and Schnee joined the team.) Villeneuve had just worked with Jake Gyllenhaal on “Enemy,” and when his name came up the director was eager to work with Gyllenhaal again.

“I had not thought of Jake as a down-and-dirty L.A. cop,” says Barden, adding that he watched Gyllenhaal’s police officer drama “End of Watch” while casting “Prisoners.” “I’ve known him over the years, and we cast him in ‘Proof’ years ago. From the work he’s done over the years, he’s just really grown as a man. He’s just such a good actor, so it was kind of fun to cast him in something that was the loner and man out of his element.”

Yes, it does look vaguely familiar, UV. Good to know Jake & Denis will return to Toronto to screen Enemy Jan. 5th. Maybe more people will get a chance to see it. : )

I've been reading about Scott Fisher. He was a very passionate charismatic guy. He became interested in mountain climbing when he was 14, and he accomplished some amazing things, far as the peaks he conquered. As I understood it, I don't think he was using oxygen, even though he was more than 20,000 feet up when his life ended. His family's wishes were that he stay where he died. He's still up there.

Glad to know Jake is frequenting Bubby's. They have outstanding high calorie goodies. (Blueberry pancakes!) He will need all the weight and muscle he can gain. From looking at Scott's photos, and maybe part of it is the clothing, but Jake may have to get close to his Jarhead size, or at least to EoW size..

I remember the photo shoot from the LAOD promo. I think but it may have been earlier for Source Code. I remember the white Henley shirt thinking Jake should were Henley shirts more often.

The pose reminds me of the Men's Health shoot.

Hi Sami - not sure which page you mean. But yeah, I think the cover photo is old, and the other photos in the post are from the photo shoot he did early this year. He has Prisoners hair.

So happy Prisoners got a nomination from NBR. People mock them sometimes, but they awarded Jake for BBM, so they are okay in my book.

Good news on the Satellite awards, too, but those appear to be a bit of a joke.

The award season seems to be all over the place, the LA critics named James Franco co-winner with Jared for best supporting. And the Palms festival named that new JLow film as best ensemble. And best actor is all over the place too. It truly is a competitive and unpredictable year.

But 12 Slaves and Gravity don't seem to be dominating liked it was predicted. I know its early. I think Jake's equal billing and screen time in Prisoners may caused some to question if he is truly had a supporting role.

But I thought Franco had the lead in Spring Break? Oh well I decided not to get my hopes.

Many surprises like Dallas Buyers Club in ensemble, Redford snubbed, Her and Inside Llewyn Davis also snubbed ...
The Wolf of Wall Street was snubbed, but many have not seen the movie.

Prisoners is a thriller, so I do not think they like that kind of movie.

bobbyanna said...

I agree, Monica. I just feel really bad that Jake & Melissa Leo were overlooked. Also, the ensemble cast.

The omission of Redford is really a shocker. As you point out, there were a few names and films that were conspicuously overlooked. I'd add American Hustle to the list.

I thought it would get some attention and it didn't. The reviews and feedback for August/Osage weren't very good.

bobbyanna said...

Oops. American Hustle did get into the mix. I guess I was looking for Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Renner & Cooper to get individual noinations. Only Jennifer Lawrence did. But the cast got a nomination.

Realist said...

Wow, really surprised by 3 of those nominations for supporting. Hoping for Jared to win. I think fassbender is a joke.

Most of the actors voting do not have an attention span long enough to watch a 2 1/2 movie though.

Really sorry for Jake and Prisoners.

Monica said...

The reviews and feedback for August/Osage weren't very good.

bobbyanna said...

I thought Fassbender played a cliché, without nuance. A competent job, but not one I would've nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I found his performance unremarkable. I'm fond of James Gandolfini, but IMO this was a vote based on sentiment.

Monica, I hope you're wrong about Oprah. I want Lupita N'Yongo to triumph. Her acting left me simply drained. It was a very powerful performance.

Mary said...

I'm disappointed for Jake and Prisioners too hopefully GG and Oscars will be better for them.I got up early for nothing I have only seen The Butler don't know much about the others just what I have read.Hope Oprah doesn't win either Bobbyanna.

Monica said...

Monica, I hope you're wrong about Oprah.

I wanted too, but it's Oprah!

who saw says Gandolfini gives a great performance, but I think he had the support of the actors from the TV, since they also vote for the performances on film.

I was not surprised by James or Jared's nominations.

Jake Gyllenhaal house hunting in SoHo

Jake Gyllenhaal is house hunting this holiday season. He recently checked out a stunning two-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse at 65 Thompson St., which is asking $3.55 million.

Gyllenhaal has been buzzing in the news this week when he revealed on “Ellen” how he hurt his hand on the set of the upcoming “Nightcrawler” indie film. “A mirror broke in the middle of a scene that I was shooting,” the actor said.

The penthouse he toured comes with its own “Hamptons-like” entertaining space and private rooftop zone.

There is also a fireplace, chef’s kitchen and walnut wood panels in the foyer. The listing broker is Bond New York’s Pawel Ciercwierz.

"stunning two-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse at 65 Thompson St., which is asking $3.55 million."

That's a bargain believe it or not.

UltraViolet said...

Definitely a disappointment. It didn't feel like Jake was going to get a nod, but I hoped anyway. And I did think Prisoners had a shot at ensemble.

I don't think Michael Fassbender was good in "12 Years a Slave," but I'm happy for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Lupita Nyong'o. And for Barkhad Abdi, who was very good in Captain Phillips.

Jake didn't get any love from the San Diego critics but they did nominate Prisoners for ensemble, as well as Roger Deakins and Aaron Guzikowski.

Fingers crossed Jake sneaks in a Golden Globes nomination.

Tweety said...

I was hoping for a SAG nomination for ensemble too, I was disapointed. GG nominations are this morning, fingers crossed!

Monica said...

I think the HFPA doesn't like Jake. Only way to understand why he was snubbed.

I don't understand all this love for Barkhad Abdi. He is good in CP, but all these nominations, well ... Daniel Bhrul is category fraud. He's the leader and not supporting.

Many surprises, Oprah was snubbed and it seems that they really didn't like Wolf of Wall Street.

Realist said...

Well look at this way, many of the nominees had a role of lifetime and it may not happen again for them.

Somehow I like Jake's chances in the future although I hope it comes sooner than later for Jake.

Anonymous said...

"I think the HFPA doesn't like Jake. Only way to understand why he was snubbed."

Well they nominated him for leading actor in a comedy a few years back to Love and Other Drugs.

bobbyanna said...

Monica, I agree with you about Abdi and Bruhl, but I don't think the HFPA harbors bad feelings towards Jake at all. I think they are just a very fickle group.

I feel bad for Jake, of course. He deserved to be in the mix. But I also feel bad that Denis, and the rest of the cast were ignored. Prisoners got no love.

Daniela said...

Hi, I'm now aware of the news.
I'm not into the movies, but I have an opinion:
I think the Oscar nominations or GG are not just for talent. Surely there is something behind. What is important is that everyone is aware that the prisoners was dark, sad, but talented.

"HFPA snubbed Jake in Brokeback Mountain."

I didn't know that.

If I remember correctly there was confusion with some HFPA members because they thought Jake was lead in BBM not supporting. Also some voted for Jake Jarhead as well. The votes were split and he didn't get enough votes for a GG. He did receive a SAG.

Can We Talk About Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Prisoners’?

Karen Kemmerle | Monday December 16, 2013

This week, we’re highlighting some of the year’s most underrated performances that deserve wider recognition. First up? Jake Gyllenhaal’s tremendous turn in ‘Prisoners.’

.........
When we are first introduced to Loki, he is at a Chinese restaurant, eating Thanksgiving dinner alone. He flirts harmlessly with the waitress, not because he’s attracted to her, but because it’s what he should be doing if he is indeed living a life. In reality, he is devoted solely to his job. According to screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski, Gyllenhaal built a backstory for his character, which is never fully seen played out on screen, only implied. The hint that Loki grew up in a boys’ home makes sense—it’s very clear that something deeper, not just duty, drives him.

Gyllenhaal’s Loki cuts an intimidating figure. Wearing a starched shirt buttoned all the way up to his neck, clad in straight-leg jeans and a dark overcoat, Loki is not your typical cop. With old-fashioned ideals of what the job means, he does not play well with others and takes the full burden of finding the missing girls upon himself alone. In keeping with an old-school sense of masculinity, Loki internalizes everything, making his few emotional outbursts all the more shocking. You can almost see Gyllenhaal’s mind at work as he purposely dulls his senses—only his erratic blinking betrays his underlying emotions as he struggles to put the pieces of the puzzle together in an investigation that reaches further and further back into the dark pasts of the town’s residents.

Gyllenhaal expertly plays the stereotypical gumshoe, increasingly frustrated by the resistance he faces and perpetually apart. He is the audience’s eyes and ears into the crumbling investigation, and we can trust only the events we see from his perspective, Gyllenhaal assumes the responsibility of providing the moral compass for the story with deft aplomb. It is very believable that his fellow officers look to him for answers—making his few failures on the case even more devastating.

Gyllenhaal’s most impactful scene comes near the end of the film—but I won’t reveal the details. Trust me, it is well worth the two and half hour running time to experience the denouement. With no gimmicks (the erratic blinking was a clear character choice, not a crutch) or tricks, Gyllenhaal emerges from Prisoners as a truly mature actor with a sophisticated, complex and nuanced performance to his considerable credit. For once, Gyllenhaal rises to the top of an ensemble cast rather than being a serviceable role player. He achieves a world-weary attitude and a detached sensibility that help to create a character that seems to have stepped directly out of film noir.

Given Villeneuve’s expert direction of Jake in Prisoners, it is no wonder that the two have worked together on another film—Enemy—in which Gyllenhaal gives dual performances as a man who spots his doppelganger in a movie and sets out to find him. This new film received great reviews at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, and we honestly can’t wait to see their second feature together.

“Denis Villeneuve has crossed over to make commercial films,” says du Toit, noting that “Prisoners” may be mainstream entertainment but is still an auteur film. “I think Denis has hit the master level, which is why we put his film (“The Enemy”) in the Modern Masters section — he’s hit that level.”

Jake Gyllenhaal in Katz's Deli, New York, NY, USA

Had a good day in New York. Mom spotted Jake Gyllenhaal and we ate at Katz Deli than went to a bar and made fun of some douchey yankees.

for this Jake vs. BC thing, i don't understand why the writer brought RG? i think both Jake and BC are better than him. the only thing RG is better is his PR team

"i don't understand why the writer brought RG"

I think she is under the impression that Jake and Bradley are trying to be leading men although they both have already headlined more movies then Ryan. Or the thought just hit me that she could be attempting sarcasm toward Gosling or Gosling fanatic. You can't really tell with these bloggers but it was nice to see the comments about Jake as an actor.

ScriptShadow: The 10 Best Screenplays I Read This Year!

NUMBER 1
Title: Nightcrawler
Genre: Crime/Thriller
Writer: Dan Gilroy
Premise: A Los Angeles drifter with big dreams finds himself drawn into the world of “nightcrawling,” a practice where independent videographers search out violent crimes and sell them to news shows.
Thoughts: This script has stayed with me more than any other script I read in 2013. Why? Put simply, it had the best character I’ve read all year. I think if there’s a lesson here, it might be that instead of always coming up with a story concept first and trying to infuse characters into that story, maybe you should come up with a great character first, then build a story around him. I know this is how Wes Anderson works, for example. I don’t know if that’s what happened here or not, but the protagonist is so amazing in Nightcrawler, he essentially becomes the concept anyway.

Anonymous said...

^ Seems that we and everybody else may have a wonderful surprise next year when Nightcrawler is released. Love the sound of "it had the best character I’ve read all year" and "the protagonist is so amazing in Nightcrawler".

The same for Enemy. David Ehrlich tweeted:

film.com ‏@filmdotcom 2h
Denis Villeneuve’s gloriously WTF “Enemy”, starring 2 Jake Gyllenhaals, hits theaters on 3/14/14. Our review: http://www.film.com/movies/enemy-review

linking to his TIFF review for Enemy (he liked it more than Prisoners):

"Might have the scariest ending of any film ever made."

One of two Villeneuve films starring Jake Gyllenhaal at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (the more polished but less interesting “Prisoners” being the other), “Enemy” begins like the kind of movie that a slumming Brian De Palma might take to Sundance .......

Gyllenhaal, here delivering both of his best performances (okay, perhaps save for “Zodiac”. And “Brokeback Mountain”. And “Prisoners”… okay, it turns out that he’s a pretty good actor), does a magnificent job of bridging the gap between the two Jakes, carving out two distinct characters without submitting either of them to caricature. And while Gyllenhaal carries the film on his shoulders, he’s provided a considerable assist by a strong supportive cast, all of whom are clearly on board with Villeneuve’s vision .....

SCORE: 8.2/10

Next year is shaping up fantastic for Jake.

So happy to see that people have such positive things to say about Enemy. As I think about it, End of Watch, really re-defined Jake, then his work in the play, "If There Is..." Off Broadway, and now Prisoners, and Enemy. It looks like Jake is really building some momentum. It's a good time for him. : )

Sag Actor said...

That is great news about Enemy! Saw 12 Years a Slave and it was a masterpiece in acting and directing . Some scenes will haunt me for a long time.

I hope everyone has a safe, very Happy New Year's Eve!!

I just spent the past two hours going thru my medicine cabinet and my kitchen cupboards, checking expiration dates. Got rid of a lot of stuff. I figure if Duncan Hines says, "best if used by" Sept. '08, maybe it's time to say good bye. : )

Nope none that I found but I didn't read the really long comments. Thanks Hagen for the link to ScriptShadow and all the heads up information about Enemy. It seems Jake will be busy either filming or promoting a movie in 2014 which is a good thing for his fans.

Only one who talked about the personality of Louis, but I think we will know during the promo of the film.

Another one posted the link to read the script.

I saw The Butler few days ago. Hopefully Oprah will not be nominated for an Oscar. She is horrible in the film.
The film is also not good, the most interesting character was the son and the scene that stuck in my mind was in the restaurant. I was sad that this movie is in sag and not prisoners, that had a better cast with better performances.

Frozen is wonderful. I was surprised to see what a Disney movie made with the prince, the songs are wonderful, surprising ending. Leave the theater singing Let It Go (the scene is one of the best I've seen in 2013).

Saving Mr. Banks is Emma Thompson, she gives a great performance, deserving all the praise that she is receive and because of her and Tom Hanks the movie is watchable. There is a scene of singing and dancing that is memorable.
Tom Hanks is good, but he's better in Captain Phillips.

I have a feeling Nightcrawler is going to be a Jake we have never seen before. I'm really looking forward to it.

Monica, I agree with you about Oprah. It irks me that the film writers seem to think certain people deserve nominations just for showing up.

I thought Forest Whitaker's did some good work, as well as the young men who played his sons, but the movie seemed so outdated. It was like a made for TV movie from the 80's.

Tom Hanks did fine work in Capt. Philips.

Seems like Jake's presence was causing some excitement at a restaurant a few hrs ago.

I was looking at a webcam of 5th Ave. and it looks very TDAT in NYC right now. : ) It's 5 degrees here in the Midwest, with a wind chill of -14. Hope anyone affected by this storm system is safe & warm indoors tonight.

I saw The Butler too Monica and was disappointed. I agree Oprah doesn't deserve a Oscar nomination and the movie played out like A Lifetime movie

She is in the predictions for being Oprah in a movie of Harvey Weinstein. I still see her being nominated, although Harvey is not having a great year.

I agree that it looked like a movie for TV.

I don't understand this discussion about Greta. I think we can't say if she is or not in the picture. Who cares? It's jake with enjoying a day in New York.
