Strolling along

Jake Gyllenhaal and Alyssa Miller out for a Sunday stroll, with Jake's mother and with Alyssa's dog, Charlie.

Apparently, there was once a show called Starstruck, where fans got to meet and interview stars. Jake is never actually interviewed by them, but he makes some appearances in these episodes:

The Day After Tomorrow - Jake is at the end:

Heath Ledger (Casanova & Brothers Grimm press conferences); BBM red carpet (Jake at about 5:45):

Tidbits. From the NY Post:

Jake Gyllenhaal and his new girlfriend, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Alyssa Miller, are going strong. On Friday, the genetically gifted pair was spotted breaking a sweat together at Barry’s Bootcamp in Tribeca. “They looked like they were having fun,” says a spy. On Sunday, the couple was seen holding hands on their way to brunch at Hudson Clearwater with Gyllenhaal’s mom, Naomi Foner, and Miller’s dog, a Boston terrier named Charlie.

And another:

The couple that sweats together stays together!

Jake Gyllenhaal and rumored new girlfriend Alyssa Miller recently took a class together at the famously hard-core Barry's Boot Camp TriBeCa, which she frequents.

According to a spy, Gylenhaal really "hit it hard."

"They left dripping in sweat," said the witness of the 32-year-old actor and the 24-year-old model.

Gyllenhaal reportedly met his previous gal pal, sexy Sports Illustrated model Emily DiDonato, at SoulCycle's Union Square location, where he is a regular.

There's something so wonderful about seeing the Toronto and Venice videos. I try not to wax too nostalgic. Too many Jake "fans" can't move past that time in Jake's career. But it really was a special moment.

It was wonderful to see Heath being so sweet to the Starstruck girl.

I also love the moment when the Toronto fan gets completely tongue-tied when Jake looks at her, exemplifying the Starstruck title. Who can blame her?

Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke are in discussions to star in Everest, a mountain climbing disaster film that The Deep helmer Baltasar Kormakur will direct. He’s the one that’s putting the cast together and is aiming for a November shooting start.

Great cast.

Is that the reason Jake left MG?

Scott said...

Mia, which is why I didn't bother with the link, thank you though Lara. I love Jake and am glad he is happy so thank you Mia for your opinion and like the link I will ignore it as well.

Scott, do yourself a favor and ignore the comments section on celeb "news" blogs. Not sure what there is to be sick of at this point. They haven't really been covered that much.

Could be great news about the movie. Will have to see if t pans out and also what the role is.

Gyllenbabble said...

Monica, not sure if that's why he left MGrimd but it could be. I think we are seeing why he left CAA though!

Monica said...

From THR:
Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes are in various states of negotiations to star in Everest, a based-on-a-true-story tale about the ill-fated 1996 climb to the top of the world's tallest mountain. Universal is in talks to co-finance the film with Emmett/Furla and distribute in North America.
From director Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns), Everest follows two expedition groups whose treks turn tragic when a massive storm hits, leaving eight people dead.

...

End of Watch star Gyllenhaal will play Scott Fischer, the leader of another expedition.

Gyllenbabble said...

Was just comng here to post that, Monica. Sounds promising. Love the name :)

You can google the name if you want to know Fischer's fate.

bobbyanna said...

OMG, that's great news. Great cast, too. I just get queasy reading Jake and mountain climbing in the same sentence.
I hope they shoot it in a sound studio. (And you know they won't.)

They'll hype the locations, and the danger, and the challenges, the authenticity, etc. And Jake loves to push himself and test himself. IMO it's already a nail biter and they haven't even signed on yet.

Long ago, there was a movie called The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood. My father loved it and I went to see it with him. Scariest mountain climbing movie ever.

"TheWrap ‏@TheWrap 21s
Jake Gyllenhaal Exits Disney's 'Into the Woods'"

No Jake, no just no. Like always bad news comes with the good news with Jake. Jake, no no no.

Monica said...

The edgy thriller is gearing up for a five-week shoot in early October and while Gyllenhaal wanted to make the dates work with "Into the Woods," it proved impossible.

Marshall's star-studded cast necessitates a complicated shooting schedule that would've required Gyllenhaal to be on set for several days in October and November, and possibly September and December as well. He wasn't willing to turn down multiple opportunities in order to participate as a supporting player alongside Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

This is a good reason, but I'm sad that he will not be in this musical.

Scott said...

Well Monica here's hoping Jake was so impressive that Disney will find a way to make it work but I would think a five week shoot in October, early Novemeber could have worked? Or the independent filming could have worked around it but we don't know if there are other opportunities that were conflicting.

I just wanted to see Jake is a big big film again and singing. Oh well it's his career not mind.

Monica said...

UPDATE: Gyllenhaal was to have played Rapunzel's Prince, not Cinderella's. I regret the error...

Well, I'm not sad. hahaha

He made the right choice.

suvee said...

The Mt. Everest movie sounds very interesting, and it should be a good choice for Jake. Looks like the Bear Grylls caper paid off!

In case anyone is interested, Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" is a profoundly riveting and moving account of the Scott Fischer Mt. Everest expedition. I highly recommend it. But be prepared...... not the cheeriest of reads.

UltraViolet said...

So Jake was going to be Rapunzel's prince?

I guess it's not bad that he's not doing it. Still wish they had found a way to make it work.

It's another event mpvie that Jake won't be part of.

bobbyanna said...

All I want to say is I hope they have a damned good budget for the Mount Everest movie and they have every single thing they need for a successful production.

Fischer's role in Everest reads like Oscar bait, to be honest.

If Jake was Rapunzel's prince, I'm glad he's not doing it. It's a waste of his talent, and honestly, I have nothing against Chris Pine. I like him, but to give him Cinderella's Prince's role over Jake is just wrong. I'd love to see Jake sing in a movie. It doesn't even have to be a musical.

bobbyanna said...

Hi, suvee! Thanks for the recommend. I'll wait until they actually start filming, but I'll definitely read the book.

As I've said, the idea of it makes me queasy and it seems like a very physically demanding role.

suvee said...

Hi bobbyanna! How are you? Well, I hope.

If this movie can capture the intensity and tragedy of this story, it will be awesome. But yes, think it would require some $$$$ to do it justice.

UltraViolet said...

Hi, suvee! it sounds like it could be a great movie. I just hope they have the resources and the talent to make it one.

Still bummed he couldn't do Into The Woods, though much less so if he wasn't going to be Prince Charming, or whatever he's called in the musical.

As Scott said, it's always the negative with the positive for Jake these days.

Love the Ryan Adams tweet. It makes me dislike Fincher that he's didn't choose Jake for Gone Girl.

Sag Actor said...

I'm glad that Nightcrawler was greenlighted and the Mt. Everest movie sounds promising.I think there was a TV movie made based on the story. Shame that Into the Woods didn't work out.

Ph0enicks said...

Hey UV do you think Fincher's holding a grudge from Zodiac days?

Monica said...

More info about Everest:

I’m most likely doing a picture called Everest with Working Title. That’s a project we’ve been putting together and now looks like it’s going to go this fall. Simon Beaufoy is working on it now, as we speak. We’re out to actors but I can’t really tell you… they are on the final stages of putting the financing together. It’s probably going to be more difficult than The Deep in some ways. I’m not as good with altitude as I am with ocean.

Beaufoy was the writer of Slumdog Millionaire and The Fully Monty, amongst others. For Everest he’ll be recounting the true story of how three expeditions up the mountain in 1996 lead to tragedy. It may be his experience on 127 Hours that comes in the most useful here.

bobbyanna said...

Reading Baltasar Kormakur's interview about making The Deep, it doesn't do very much to reassure me about Everest... :/.

Wasn't Christian Bale attached to this at one point?

The director doesn't make me very excited. But happy with the screenwither.
I read a lot of news about this movie, and I remember that the budget would be 60-70 million and the movie will be in 3D.

Wasn't Christian Bale attached to this at one point?
Yes.

UltraViolet said...

Sorry, didn't see the question above. I don't think David Fincher actually holds a grudge, no. But he perpetuated the false appearance of a fraud and was disingenuous about actors not being happy about doing 50+ takes of a scene.

Fincher could dispel a lot of that by casting Jake in another role. Maybe he doesn't want to work with Jake again. Who knows.

And I agree, Monica. The director isn't promising.

UV, I read an interview the director did about filming The Deep and he made several pronouncements that make me nervous. : ) He doesn't believe in green screens and CGI. He likes to "keep it real." And yes, it was a cheap shoot. If Jake takes on this role, his part, as Fischer, will be very demanding. This movie sounds like something Bear Grylls should do...: /

Oh, don't mind me. I always get nervous. My daughter's talking about going to Sri Lanka with a friend who's studying elephants.

Monica said...

Bob, I don't think he will put the cast in a risky situation. This is a different situation, since he's working this time for a major studio.
There are many directors who don't like green screen or use the minimum of CGI, as Nolan.

UltraViolet said...

I'm also frustrated by the way this is being spun, mostly due to the Wrap. They were pissed off that THR or Deadline got the scoop on Everest. And they are framing Jake's exit from Into The Woods without mentioning Everest. So you get twitter headlines like the Huffington Post: Jake Gyllenhaal Drops Huge Project.

I do realize that I'm mostly annoyed about the ancillary issues. I wasn't all that excited about Into the Woods, as I've never seen it and I didn't really love the song the two princes sing.

Add to that Jake being Rapunzel's prince, and eh. But I will miss him being a part of all that big event movie hoopla.

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for the explanation, Bobbyanna. I remember some issues surrounding The Deep. Let's hope with a bigger studio and budget, things will go more smoothly!

UltraViolet said...

This info might have been in one of the other links posted, but just in case:

"We have a great cast that hasn't been announced yet..." promised director Baltasar Kormakur of his upcoming Everest movie when Empire had cause to speak to him recently. Well, the cat seems to be out of the bag, with reports this morning that Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes and Jason Clarke are all in talks to don climbing gear and head for Nepal.

The film has been in development for some time, with Christian Bale at one time casually attached. "We don't have him anymore; he went to do Moses (Ridley Scott's Exodus) instead, which sucked," Kormakur told us. But Bale's departure led to a rethink which might ultimately affect Everest for the better. "I decided to go for a more ensemble version of the story," says the director. Hence, presumably, the current news. ...

Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title are producing, and Kormakur told us that he hopes to be shooting in Iceland, Italy and Nepal in the autumn.

I was also thinking: I hope Jake hasn't burned any bridges with this decision.

Monica said...

"I decided to go for a more ensemble version of the story," says the director.

The role of Rapunzel's prince is very small and poorly written.

It's a bit odd that the producers didn't correct that misconception more decidedly early on. Most sources got that wrong. Maybe Jake couldn't agree with the producers on which part he would play.

Today I've bought "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer to prepare for the Everest movie. ;-) I know I'm late, but I've just figured out that Jason Clarke will have the biggest part, the role that Christian Bale was rumoured for. Though most headlines about the movie just ignore him. Jake's part will probably be quite substantial, too.

Hagen said...

BTW I wasn't aware that Jake would play a criminal in "Nightcrawler":

Yahoo: Dan Gilroy wrote "Nightcrawler," which finds Gyllenhaal playing a small-time Los Angeles criminal who gets a little too swept up in the nocturnal world of the city's crime journalism community.

I've got mixed feelings about "Into the Woods". On the one hand I'm not really interested in the musical. On the other hand Jake seems to love Soderbergh and "Into the Woods". So it's a pity that he can't be a part of the movie adaptation.

It's probably difficult enough to shoot both "Nightcrawler" and "Everest" this year. According to "The Hollywood Reporter" the Everest movie is set to start filming in October ("Working Title is producing and looking at an October shoot in Iceland, which would put Kormakur back on his home turf.") Other sources report that the production will begin in November, which looks more plausible to me, as "Nightcrawler" will be filmed in October and early November.

Deadline: Billy Magnussen Ventures ‘Into The Woods’ To Replace Jake Gyllenhaal

I've never heard of him before.

He's from the theatre community.

Much less expensive than Jake I would bet. After casting Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, there's not a whole lot of money left.
Emily Blunt, Jake, Anna Kendrick, & Chris Pine, don't come cheap, but I doubt they command such huge salaries.

Mari said...

Zack Snyder's a special effects addict, not a director and all of those actors are too old. They need to do what happened with the Spiderman reboot.

This is going to be Superman's movie. Adding Batman is just a storyline gimmick, like Alien vs. Predator. I agree, if Jake's name is really in the hat, I hope he walks away, unless they pay him a ridiculous amount of money, and his character is important, and he has a decent script.

Nothing on Prisoners or (An) Enemy yet at the TIFF press conference.

UltraViolet said...

And we get the Prisoners nod. But not An Enemy. Yet Jesse Eisenberg's The Double is playing. I think it was rumored to be based on the same book.

UltraViolet said...

Apparently they will announce the Canadian lineup in three weeks, so perhaps it will be listed then.

I hope it at least appears in Venice.

There are other movies that weren't mentioned, but the website, of course, is down. So no idea what else will play besides the announced films.

Eisenberg's movie is based on a book by Dostoevsky.

UltraViolet said...

Yeah, I just looked that up.

Still irritating that JE has two films playing. Mia Wasikowska has three, I think. And Benedict Cumberbatch has two very prominent movies playing. The trailer for The Fifth Estate looked very good. I'm already tired of the August Osage County trailer.

ph0enicks said...

UV - You nailed it. "Irritating" is right about The Double if it's based on the same book. Doesn't help that I'm really not a JE fan.

Hagen said...

"Prisoners" has a running time of 146 minutes. That's pretty long, isn't it? Actually I hoped for a "Gala Presentation" ("Movie stars. Red-carpet premieres. Major audience interest."), but a "Special Presentation" ("High-profile premieres and the world’s leading filmmakers.") is all right, too.

I wonder what's the matter with "Enemy" though.

Mari said...

For Toronto, other categories have not yet been announced. Maybe Enemy is not yet ready, or maybe it will be announced in another category. Denis Villeneuve is a Canadian Filmmaker and there is a special category for them as well.
This movie plot of Jesse Eisenberg sounds like it has been done many times before and is a cliche'.

Mari said...

Sorry, UV you have said this earlier about the Canadian filmmaker category. I didn't realize.

Hagen said...

"Prisoners" will have its world premiere at TIFF, so it won't be shown in Venice (but that was unlikely anyway).

Hagen said...

Still irritating that JE has two films playing.

Plus Eisenberg's "Night Moves" will take part in the Venice Film Festival (unlike "The Double").

Anonymous said...

If they intend to release it this year, "An Enemy" will be at TIFF for sure. Today's announcement was the first wave of titles. Just 75 out of 250+ films to be screened in Toronto.

No list of movies in competition yet or the special category for Canadian films. "An Enemy" is a Canadian movie. Already announced "Prisoners" by canadian Villeneuve is a US production, just like "Devil's Knot" by canadian Egoyan.
Keeping my fingers crossed for "An Enemy" to open in Venice. 2 more days.

Hagen said...

If they intend to release it this year, "An Enemy" will be at TIFF for sure.

There are quite a lot of categories at TIFF indeed. But many of them are largely ignored by the public. A participation in the "Wavelengths" or "Vanguard" section might fit the movie, but wouldn't help much to market it.

bobbyanna said...

Hagen, you're right, up to a point. TIFF is a big bazaar, like Cannes and Sundance, and this is where distribution and film financing deals are made.

The media will be in one place,so interviews will be set up, and press events are going on all the time.

If Enemy gets scheduled into TIFF, it'll have it's moment, no matter which category it's presented in, if the PR is handled correctly and effectively.

You're right, there's definitely prestige in the Special Presentations and the Galas.

I'm putting some faith in WME and the company they've hired for handling distribution. I'm hoping they'll find the right slot and the right way to present Enemy.

I never expected it to be Gala listed, but I'm disappointed it didn't get a Special Presentation slot. All that could change in the next weeks.

They'll be adding films at the last minute to the top two categories, even as they announce selections for the other categories.

If a film generates buzz, and gets attention from the festival, at some point it won't matter in which category it arrived. Films upend expectations at these events all the time.

Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted having a cozy Sunday brunch with his latest gal pal, Alyssa Miller, at Sant Ambroeus in the West Village. “They were sitting close to each other, on the same side of a table, and reading the paper together,” a spy said. Perhaps Gyllenhaal was too enamored: He was seen later returning to the restaurant because he’d forgotten his wallet. Page Six asked Miller on Monday night about her “new boyfriend,” and she replied, “I’m very, very happy.”

General rules of participation: Films produced or co-produced in countries other than Spain must not have participated in any other festival taking place prior to the dates of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. This excludes festivals accredited by the FIAPF in the category: “non-competitive festivals” and national competitions at festivals in their countries of production.

Films produced or co-produced in countries other than Spain must not have participated in film events in their country of production if these are accredited by the FIAPF as falling into the category: “competitive festivals”.

Exceptionally, the Management Committee reserves the right to admit productions which have previously participated in certain non-competitive film events.

FIAPF: Venice Film Festival is a competitive film festival, thus a participation in the Venice Film Festival is excluded. TIFF is a non-competitive film festival (not excluded).

bobbyanna said...

OK. I misunderstood. I thought it could be shown in a non-competitive category, even if the festival is competitive. Most festivals have both a competitive, and non competitive categories.

The new official synopsis of "Enemy" by Pathé UK: ENEMY tells the story of a university lecturer named Adam (Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal) who is nearing the end of a relationship with his girlfriend Mary (Melanie Laurent). One night, while watching a film, Adam spots a minor actor who looks just like him. Consumed by the desire to meet his double, Adam tracks down Anthony, an actor living with his pregnant wife Helen (Sarah Gadon) and engages him in a tense, complex and ultimately lethal struggle. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (the Academy Award nominated director of Incendies), and based on the novel The Double by Nobel Prize winning author Jose Saramago, the film is a haunting and provocative psychosexual thriller about duality and identity, where in the end only one man will win. The film, which also stars Isabella Rossellini as Adam's mother, was produced by Niv Fichman and Miguel Angel Faura, and adapted for the screen by Javier Gullon.

A psychosexual thriller LOL

Hagen, I wish Jake had made more movies last year, too. But I'm not sure it was his choice.

I'm not sure either, but I think "The Way Way Back", "Now You See Me" or anything else would have been possible for Jake.

Probably, yet i keep hoping to be wrong...anyway i got the feeling that Jake performance would be better than the film itself. It seems like a great character/s (in theory at least) for a pretty confusing or uneven script . It's the opposite of Prisoners to me. This one seems my cup of tea, but Jake character looks not really interesting at all, in comparison with the Hugh, Paul or Viola ones

I'd be more comfortable if you were friendlier.

It amazes me that people come here to get information, don't participate in conversations and then feel comfortable popping up to judge the people who do post.

I understand if you are excited about a piece of news and other people aren't. It can be frustrating and disappointing.

But it's not cool to post only when you have something negative to say about the other posters here.

It would be nice if the movie also screens at Toronto. Then we won't have to wait sop long to see what it's like.

I hope it gets a good reception at the SSFF. I'll be curious to see what, if anything, film blogger types have to say about this news.

Anonymous said...

You think I'm judging. I think i was only answering an user who asked directly why i was under impression people thought San Sebastian was a shitty festival.

UltraViolet said...

This? Is judgey:

Idk, maybe i reach that conclussion because i was expected "Thank God, i thought we would never watch that movie" reactions instead of "Bu...but i wanted Venice!!! Waaah CRYING FOR YEARS"

And your initial post about it not being a "shitty" festival was pretty defensive.

All I'm saying is that it would be nice for a new poster to identify himself or herself instead of jumping in to be negative.

And post again in a friendly manner, rather than waiting for the next opportunity to pounce.

If you're a lurker, you know this happens all the time. People post once to complain or to correct a perceived slight, then they disappear.

Probably, you'll say, because I'm not nice to them. And perhaps so. But if you think it's frustrating to see people whining about An Enemy not going where they want, imagine my feeling about people whining about how other people post here.

Anonymous said...

You can arguably say that it was judgey, i disagree but it's ok. But my first post defensive? I dont accept that. I was just informing people about the reputation San Sebastian has and encouraging people to check the last winners of La Concha de Plata, but always in a friendly way.

And btw no offense but i dont care if you are nice to me. If you dont want anons to give their opinions just put answers only allowed to users registered.if not im entitled to say what i want as long as its not offensive

I keep seeing Enemy referred to as a Spanish production, though the rules Hagen posted refer to films produced IN Spain not by Spain. Hmm.

Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, will compete as part of the official selection of the 61st San Sebastian Film Festival (Sep 20-28).

At a press conference in Madrid today, festival director José Luis Rebordinos revealed the Spanish titles that will compete for the Golden Shell. Spanish films set to feature in other sections of the festival were also revealed.

Villeneuve’s Enemy stars Gyllenhaal as a man who seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a film. The co-production between Canada (Rhombus Media) and Spain (Roxbury Pics) is Villeneuve’s follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Incendies.

Hagen said...

A journalist from Radio Canada met Denis Villeneuve travelling from Los Angeles to London. Denis Villeneuve on "Prisoners": « C'était un film de commande qui est devenu mon film, car au final j'ai eu une totale liberté », explique Denis Villeneuve, pas peu fier du résultat.

"It was a commissioned film which has become my film, because in the end I had complete freedom," explains Denis Villeneuve, who's proud of the result.

Hagen said...

I keep seeing Enemy referred to as a Spanish production, though the rules Hagen posted refer to films produced IN Spain not by Spain. Hmm.

The rules distinguish between films totally produced in Spain (world premiere required) and films produced or co-produced in countries other than Spain. "Enemy" falls into the second category as Spanish-Canadian co-production shot in Toronto. SSFF doesn't require a world premiere of those movies, but they can't take part in competitve film festivals like Venice before.

Variety about "Enemy" at San Sebastian and Villeneuve's "singular distinction of having two movies in major near back-to-back festivals": “Enemy” stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who discovers his double, (Gyllenhaal again), lives close by. With “Prisoners” world preeming at Toronto, “Enemy’s” San Sebastian berth gives Villeneuve the singular distinction of having two movies in major near back-to-back festivals."

Not so singular, as Jake has the same distinction. Too bad they dont't mention it.

Good news about "Enemy". San Sebastian is a major european festival according to Variety, if not as famous or glam as Cannes and Venice. Speaking of Venice, still holding hope: "Enemy" being listed as a Spanish film in the Spanish lineup, kind of a stretch. A loophole for Venice? We'll know tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

Gonna give it a try. There were snipets from a taped interview interspersed with the radio hosts comments. Villeneuve was at LAX en route to London for Prisoners soundtrack. Which means it's not completed yet.

"A commissioned film which has become my film, because in the end I had complete freedom" - the statement is about Prisoners, not Enemy. It was Villeneuve's answer to the first question. He fell in love with Prisoners script a few years ago. During the shooting, the movie became more and more "his".

Second question was abouut Jake and their previous film, Enemy, who according to the interviewer "is completed or it's going to be completed this week (?) and will be released later". Villeneuve's answer sounded more detailed and enthusiastic: "I REALLY wanted to work with Jake again and he really wanted to work with me". A sense of familiarity, warmth. He said they found a "complicity" while shooting Enemy. When Denis started casting Prisoners, he asked Jake to consider playing the detective because Jake is "extremely creative" and Denis felt he needed him to make the cop character "meatier". He feared the character could lack "meat/depth" and he needed Jake to add that. Something about Jake's improv style and how delighted he's that Jake accepted to play the part.

The male host points out that Prisoners was shot after Enemy and it already has a world premiere date, while Enemy was shot last year and - the interviewer interrupts, claiming she "feels there is more to find out about Enemy". Lo and behold, today we heard about San Sebastian. Sounds like Denis told her more about Enemy but the current radio piece was about Prisoners promotion.

UltraViolet said...

Now THAT's how you make an anonymous comment! Thank you so much for doing that!

That was the feeling I got from listening to the answer about Jake, but I was not at all sure enough in my French to go into detail.

I love that he was so eager to work with Jake again and spoke so glowingly about him. From what we've seen, it looks like Jake has made the detective a compelling character.

I really, really appreciate your listening, translating and posting that. Merci!

Anonymous said...

You're more than welcome - your blog is the no. 1 source of info about Jake. It took a few listenings because Canadian French sounds different than literary French. I still don't understand a couple of words.
Yes, there was a change of tone when he started talking about Jake, from "studio speak" to genuine warmth I guess. I can hardly wait for Enemy promotion. Maybe they'll do some joint interviews.
The interviewer's claim that "she feels" news about Enemy will come soon - she knows more, maybe about Toronto, but can't talk about it. Asked about future plans, Villeneuve himself said he can't talk about it now. There's a time and a strategy for everything in HW.

For "Prisoners," a gripping dramatic thriller about how far a father will go to protect his family, Jóhannsson took a unique approach to the score by blending an orchestra with a large string and woodwind section with two little known instruments, the Cristal Baschet and the Ondes Martenot. By blending those unfamiliar sounds with string instruments, Jóhannsson created music with a delicate, glassy surface, heightening the tension of the film.

"I wanted the music to be a poetic voice that worked in counterpoint to the action of the film," Jóhannsson says. "Even though the movie is a thriller, the music is lyrical and beautiful, in stark contrast to the intensity of the film depicts."

Not only Prisoners may go to Telluride, "Enemy" could also make the trip to the mountains. Telluride precedes Toronto and is a non-competitive festival so both are possible for "Enemy" - with Toronto not only possible but also probable.
The only "downside" is that Telluride's lineup is tightly kept under wraps until the first day of the festival, Aug. 29. We have to wait a month to find out.

Last year the schedule was announced on September, 7th. Very soon we'll get to know which non-Spanish productions enter the competition.

Pathé's new description of "Enemy" ("A haunting and provocative psychosexual thriller") sounds, as if they had the "Vanguard" section at TIFF in mind ("Provocative, sexy… possibly dangerous. This is what's next."). But maybe that's just a coincidence.
