From Hagen:

Jake obviously has a lot of friends, but he doesn't seem to have those regular directors, or collaborators, and I wish that he was part of that.

That's an interesting point, bobbyanna. I tend to think that it's better to have a wide variety of collaborators - and especially directors - in an actor's résumé. Otherwise an actor would run the risk to get stuck in a routine. Working with various directors with different approaches might be helpful to unleash an actor's creativity.

Monica said...

I agree it is good to work with different directors, but is also always good to have a partnership with one or more directors. Especially if they are great directors like Bobbyana said.
It's not like he's going to play the same type of character.

Sigh. These pictures make me want to hang out in NYC.

David Harbour has a pretty impressive NY theatre background. He was nominated for a Tony a few years ago, for a revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff. Last year he was in the revival of Glengarry Glen Ross with Al Pacino and Bobby Cannavale.

Hagen, I forgot to say that I liked the E! blurb about Jake reading TGG. And Lara, that tweet did sum things up.

Even though it seems like it might be a train wreck, it is also. Big, interesting creation. And we know Baz was sort of impressed with Jake's Moulin Rouge audition. It's a shame Toney's pal was cast.

We'll find out more as screenings are held.

UltraViolet said...

I do think the Leo/Scorcese partnership could use a rest. But it's yielded some great bonuses for both. Same with Foncher and Pitt. Ideally, Jake would find the balance.

I want to go to NYC, too, Bobbyanna. In the springtime.

What I really love about these photos, is Jake seems relaxed and he's smiling.

I don't know if all this recent attention is part of some "grand design" by Jake's management team, (are they that competent?)but I'm enjoying it very much. You'd think Jake was in TGG movie! LOL!

The Soul Cycle article is a huge hit. It's being covered everywhere. : )

I'm sad because I finished The Great Gatsby.

Jake did a good job. I was really into it by the end, and I'm not a fan of audio books, as I've mentioned.

From the guy whose guitar Marcus signed:

I wonder which village he lives at. East or west village?

I love that Jake lives in NewYork, he fits right in. A lot of actors are now making NY their home .now.

Jake does a fantastic job reading TGG? I've listened to it twice! The early reviews of the movie sounds like Jake may have dodged a stinker.

Monica said...

I think jake will be tonight at the premiere of TGG to support Carey Muligan. I just hope we have pictures of him with DiCaprio and Carey.

I love carey. She was stolen in the awards for her performance in Shame.

Hagen said...

I guess the publishers of the audiobook would insist that Jake shows up at the premiere, even if he didn't want to.

The Hollywood Reporter: The Uncensored Oral History of 'The Hangover'

Director Todd Phillips: When we were writing, we did have [other actors] in mind. Quite honestly, we were writing the brother-in-law as a younger brother they had to take along with them -- like a Jonah Hill character instead of Zach [Jake Gyllenhaal also was considered]. Then we thought it'd be so much more awkward if it was an older brother who's still at home. [Thomas Haden Church was strongly considered.]

UltraViolet said...

I don't think the audiobook publishers have that much clout. It will be interesting to see if he goes. He tends to avoid these splashy things, but he does have many connections to it.

If he goes, he'll probably tease us and skip the red carpet.

Not a fan of The Hangover movies, but it would be nice for Jake to have a successful franchise, I guess. I'm okay with not having to sit through them, but they have done wonders for Bradley Cooper's career.

Let's hope Jake can get his own version of something like it.

UltraViolet said...

Also, I hate these stories because they perpetuate the stories about how much worse the movie would have been with Jake in the role or how much cuter BC is, blah blah.

If I never see another tweet about how Jake turned down Avatar, I'll be a happy woman.

Monica said...

I'm not fan of hangover. in my opinion is overrated.

bobbyanna said...

I only saw the first Hangover and it was fun, but I never got why it was such a big deal. Except as a moneymaker.

Curious, the way it's worded: Jake
" also was considered." Wonder if Jake even knew. Of course, this was in the bad old days when CAA dropped the ball a lot on possible roles for Jake. Agree UV, Avatar, and you can add Batman & Spiderman to the list.

It is an absolutely gorgeous day outside.

Chica, you've listened twice already? I let not taking the T to work, so my commute/audio time was lessened.

Not crazy about the Audible interface. I might listen again after seeing the movie.

Thanks for letting us know it's on E, Mary. I won't make it home in time for most of it. Will be interesting to see who shows.

And here I was, all dressed for that Bradley Cooper in Jane Got a Gun premiere. Oh well! Keep your eye on Portman's BROTHERS co-stars...

Anonymous said...

From hollywood report story about Cooper's exit:

'Sources say the production went out to Jake Gyllenhaal but that did not pan out."

So Jake probably didn't want to do it either but I think he should.

Monica said...

from Deadline:
The filmmakers are working hard to replace him, and are courting a short list of actors that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hiddleston.

No children said...

"Joseph Gordon-Levitt "

Please no, although he is the same age as Jake and Toby, it would be liking watching a 12 year old play cowboys and indians. So if Jake passes or is not chosen, I hope it goes to Toby or Tom.

Monica said...

This is a mess! One says that they went to Jake, but it didn't work. Maybe will coincide with the filming of MG. The other says they are trying again Jake.

lol no children.

UltraViolet said...

I had wanted Jake to do it, because I think it's no risk and potentially big gain. (The movie has been so messed up that if it's a failure, there will be plenty of blame to go around. But it's a buzzed about movie and a villain role.)

Now that BC has dropped out, as well, though, I really wonder if things are too messed up for it to work. As someone said when this first came up, we don't need another Nailed.

UltraViolet said...

LOL about JGL.

So it doesn't seem like Jake is at the GG premiere. I am of two minds about this:

1. It would have been fun if Jake went and got into it and dressed up for the occasion.

2. Why should Jake go to the premiere of a movie that he didn't get to appear in but for which he got what some see as the consolation prize (doing the audiobook).

Or maybe he's rocking the green cargo pants and hiding at the premiere party with Marcus.

Anonymous said...

"Maybe will coincide with the filming of MG"

I thought that is why Jake could have possibly passed on it but I thought MG filming had been postponed to the Fall. I am a little more concern about MG turning into a Nailed like project, meaning it will no go anywhere. I think if Jake can do "Jane" with Natalie then he should because he would be playing the bad guy in a Western.

And he coould even wear his thick beard for the part to ugly himself up a bit.

Anonymous said...

"the consolation prize (doing the audiobook)."

I look at it this way, Jake has a better shot at a Grammy than anyone associated with The Great Gatsby reboot has at getting an Oscar nomination or even a Razzy for their performance in the movie.

Mary said...

Jake could of been there just didn't do the red carpet maybe he stayed back with Marcus he didn't do the red carpet with Carey.the only ones I saw on the red carpet were involved with the movie.Have to wait and see if any pics turn up.

Regarding the movie Jane Got a Gun
sounds like something wrong with it if every one keeps dropping out.

UltraViolet said...

It's borderline offensive that they used the Boston Marathon bombing as a reason for BC's departure. Come on, they didn't lose that much shooting time!

Not a lot of stars on TGG red carpet, Mary, at least not that I've seen. WireImage and Getty aren't as quick on the draw as they used to be, it seems.

Monica said...

Anon, looks like it will begin in the summer.

There is many reasons to Jake refused. Perhaps he thinks that the role requires time for preparation, or he didn't like the script, or he wants vacation ...

Jane Got a Gun will be the new Lost in La Mancha. Watch.

lol Lost In La Mancha terry gilliam's movie that shot some scenes, but it was never finalized.

bpbbyanna said...

LOL! Yes, UV, in his green cargo pants. : ) His GG audiobook caused a bigger stir than Tobey actually playing the role in the movie. I saw that Maggie attended a GG event for Tiffany and Prada last night with Carey, Tobey, etc.
Robert Downey Jr. & Jamie Foxx are in town, too. Jamie partied with Leo last night.

True, maybe Jake turned it down because MG was supposed to start filming soon in New Orleans. But if MG has been postponed to the fall, Jake might take another look at it. I'd love to have eavesdropped on Jake's conversation with Jude Law.
Joel Edgerton was also connected to the movie wasn't he?

I'm confused about what the problem is with the movie. Do they have their financing? Is it the director, the script, poor scheduling? It sounds like a mess. But Gatsby was a mess for a while too...maybe that's not a good example. : )

Maybe Jake should do it. He'll play a bad guy, it could turn out to be a good opportunity. Or not.

Monica said...

Absurd. Filming stopped for just a day or two.

bobbyanna said...

Well you're right UV, not too many "stars." Martha Stewart and I think one of Meryl Streep's daughters was there. Other than that, it was mostly people connected to the movie, and a lot of other random people.

And more importantly,

I think the Jane Got Her Gun movie seems more like a vanity project for Natalie. I don't think it's a good project for Jake. Just my opinion.

UltraViolet said...

Looks like Jennifer Lawrence was there, so there were some stars. We'll see if word gets out of Jake at the party/parties.

Tobey is on Letterman tonight, but I don't know if I can watch.

UltraViolet said...

Carey did not look great, I have to say. I often don't like her red carpet outfits, but this one was just boring. Disappointing.

So much for the Boston filming causing Cooper to drop out.

Anonymous said...

I thought Brad Cooper was already set for the film anyway about Chris Kyle (American Sniper) since he fit the same look as Mr. Kyle. He was in early talks to do the film, no big surprise there.

UltraViolet said...

So he did the party circuit. So predictable, that Jake.

American Sniper is the true story of Navy Seal Chris Kyle, who was killed a few months ago. Good for Bradley Cooper for acquiring the rights.

UltraViolet said...

It's the Spielberg connection that made me sigh. I want Jake to work with the great directors.

Monica said...

Good that Bradley is enjoying this time to work on promising projects with great director, which is something that I wonder why Jake didn't do it after the Oscar nomination for brokeback mountain?

Ah, stealth Jake strikes again! Sounds like the after parties were fun. From a few tweets from people that went yo screenings for GG, it doesn't sound good. The trailers don't make me want to see it either. Between the soundtrack and Leo who I think is a tad bit too old for the role IMO.

Never understood the appeal of the Hangover movies, I barely got through the first one.

She either thought it was Toby or she got shot down bad, lol. It's amazing how people get turned off when they throw themselves at famous people and get dissed.

Angry Leo said...

Leo's roles have been so angry and over the top lately.

I kind of wish he would do the Jane Got a Gun, just so the anger would be well founded. I know Gatsby had anger but I cringed at the thought of watching Leo playing that role because it will be J Edgar all over again.

Glad to read that Jake made the Gatsby after party. From the tweets it sounds like a fun time. Hopefully, some photos will trickle in.

Sure would love to see Jake & Speilberg...or Scorcese...work together.

Well, Jake was only 25, so I'll give him that.

so I'll blame his agent at CAA for didn't do it.

I read a review praising the performance of Leo in Great Gatsby. Carey does what she can and Tobey sucks.

Hallo my friends!I do not know what feelings have on GG, I wish Jake was in something big, but most of all I would like him to be in something unique, which does not usually happen when you make films about very famous novels. Of course, everything depends on the director by history, etc., more than anything else I want to be recognized Jake his great, unique, talent.
I have a question. Jake is an A list actor?

yes - Jake's an A-list movie star. once you're Oscar nominated you're A-list. once you're paid 10+ million for a movie - POP in Jake's case - you're a star.
he's A-list but not in demand now for big films - that's the problem.

So happy I was able to style hair The Great Gatsby movie premier! Leo, Toby, and Jake Gyllenhaal were all in attendance, as well as Baz. Yep, we are on a first name basis now.

FP said...

Thank you, Monica and Anon, I do not quite understand, how this thing on the list, it works, Ryan Gosling is definitely an A list but his films are not at least so far hits, JGL is an A list, but even if he is in big movies he's always in supporting roles, and aside from Looper where there was Bruce Willis, when he was the lead, has made poor numbers at the Boxing office.Bradley Cooper before SLP, made three bombs in a row.RDJ is definitely an A list, but it seems that more than a matter of numbers, real and effective, it's a matter of how you get perceived.

Lara said...

Hi FP, Well i think to be an A-list is that considered extremely bankable by the movie industry.
The list can change, however, as the popularity of a star rises and falls. But there is a method called the Ulmer Scale that say if an actor is an A-list celebrity. the last time i saw Will Smith was the first.
Have i beautiful day

FP said...

Hi Lara:)You are always kind and always put a smile on my face

bobbyanna said...

I think it depends on a combination of factors. If you Google top ten A list actors by box office, you might be surprised to see who's not on the list and who is. So it has to be more than just box office.

Then you have the stars who get first refusal on film projects, the "go to" actors like Johnny Depp, Leo, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Tom Hanks, Mark Wahlberg, Denzel, and Will Smith.

For many others, whether we realize it or not, they have to fight for projects. I believe, for example, someone like Jaime Foxx is definitely A List, but he doesn't have the kind of clout or influence of some of these "go to" guys I just mentioned.

I think it helps to have a good team of agents, and it helps if you're well thought of, respected, influential, and do a good job networking. Getting nominated for prestigious awards helps. Being a member of the Academy helps.

It seems like it also really helps to have a connection to an important director. But there are also guys like Mark Wahlberg, Clooney, and Ben Affleck, (and hopefully Jake) who create their own opportunities.

That's why successful collaborations, and being able to be a producer are important.
So for me, it's a combination of factors that cause a person to be described as A list.

I think the term has lost a lot of it's meaning and is definitely over used for people who don't really fit the description. But yes, Jake is an A lister.

FP said...

Bobbyanna!:) Thank you so much!in these rankings should also count how much prestige you have in the rest of the world

Anonymous said...

Sometimes an actor with a really busy PR and marketing machine can mislead people into thinking they are "A list" just because they are always getting their picture taken.
