Carrawayed

Audible is releasing The Great Gatsby audiobook next week, read by Jake Gyllenhaal. You can listen to the first four minutes or so here:

For those who don't know the story, here's the Audible summary:

F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby. There, he has a firsthand view of Gatsby's lavish West Egg parties - and of his undying love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan.

After meeting and losing Daisy during the war, Gatsby has made himself fabulously wealthy. Now, he believes that his only way to true happiness is to find his way back into Daisy's life, and he uses Nick to try to reach her. What happens when the characters' fantasies are confronted with reality makes for a startling conclusion to this iconic masterpiece.

This special audio edition joins the upcoming film - as well as many other movie, radio, theater, and even video-game adaptations - as a fitting tribute to the cultural significance of Fitzgerald's Jazz Age classic, widely regarded as one of the greatest stories ever told.

And the first review, from an Audible editor:

Editors Select, April 2013 - I knew I always liked The Great Gatsby, but having not read it since high school, I couldn’t remember exactly why. After listening to Jake Gyllenhaal’s superb narration, I was reminded of what I found so great about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic. Gyllenhaal strikes the right chord as, Nick Carraway, who exists within the hyper-privileged world of Long Island’s upper crust but manages to avoid becoming jaded and swept up by the materialism of his cousin, Daisy, and the titular Gatsby. Fitzgerald’s elegant yet simple prose still holds up, and Gyllenhaal treats it with the utmost respect, allowing the vivid descriptions of mansions, landmarks, and 1920s New York to flow at just the right pace. While ultimately tragic, The Great Gatsby is full of light and beautiful moments that kindle a nostalgia for the Roaring Twenties, and I was glad to have been reintroduced to a favorite book this way. —Chris, Audible Editor

The Brothers Carraway. (Tobey Maguire plays Nick Carraway, the narrator of the story, in the upcoming film.)

You can listen to snippets here or download it here. (There are links for inside and outside the U.S.) The first snippet is 20 minutes. I think the shorter ones make up the longer one.

Also, if you have a Nook or the Nook app, you can listen to Jake read Make Way for Ducklings, a children's classic.

Another snippet:

Jake was nominated for a Lucille Lortel award for his role in If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet: It’s an Off Broadway awards show, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of stars lined up for it: The roster of actors to score nominations for the 2013 Lucille Lortel Awards includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Vanessa Redgrave and American Ferrera. The Lortels, which consider only Off Broadway productions eligible for their annual kudofest, is one of the earliest in the round of Gotham legit trophies to announce nominations and winners. ... Gyllenhaal snagged a featured actor nod for his role in Nick Payne’s “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet,” which the Roundabout Theater Company produced last fall. I miss Terry!
Jake sent a note to a fellow L&OD castmembers on her 90th birthday: Just wanted to wish you a Happy 90th Birthday. I cherish our onscreen romance! Here's to you! I love that scene in the electronics store, where she gets annoyed when he doesn't give her his full attention. Go, Joan!
Jake did a fashion shoot for Elle China, and the stylists posted an instagram from the shoot:

Liked this, from twitter yesterday, about EoW:

it's good. My dad (ex LAPD) was impressed with how gyllenhal handled the radio particularly.

The Edible Schoolyard NY has been tweeting about their upcoming benefit, honoring Jake.

No idea if they have real info, but:

As Xavier Dolan has dropped out with Tom à la ferme, Canada is placing its bets on Devil’s Knot by Atom Egoyan and An Enemy by Denis Villeneuve (in accelerated post-production).

Lovely post, UV. What a sweetheart to send his "co-star" a personal birthday note. She was cute in the movie. I always love seeing Jake in a tux, but I really love the photo of Jake with Tobey, too, Caraway "Brothers." : )

bobbyanna said...

Also meant to say, that video clip of Jake's play shows what a strong cast the director put together. I thought the mother's role was underwritten, but there was no unevenness with the cast. All very accomplished actors who really delivered.

Chica said...

What a great post to wake up to, he really rocks a tux and he sounds so sexy on the Great Gatsby audio!

Jake was a standout in the play as was Anne. I agree that the part of the Mother wasn't fleshed out.

LOL, that's true (except that I'm male), but I've returned today.

"Brilliance Audio" will release Jake's audiobook on CD and MP3-CD on May 7th (available at Amazon.com: Audio CD, MP3-CD). That might be helpful for those of us who don't live in the US and thus can't download audiobooks from audible.com (or you live in the US and would like to buy a physical copy for your collection).

No need to apologize, of course. :) BTW it was definitely good advice to read "The Great Gatsby" before listening to the audiobook. I had to read some passages slowly to fully understand them. Now it will be much easier and pleasant for me to listen to the audiobook. Fortunately Jake has a clear pronunciation.

I keep meaning to watch Incendies but haven't done that yet.

Glad you appreciated the tip, Hagen. It's such a beautiful book, and I do think having read it will make the audio experience better. I've been debating whether to retread it before listening. I have read it so many times but it has been a few years. I might let Jake surprise me.

Lily, it has been fun watching Jake do all these different projects. You don't quite know what he'll do next.

Thanks for the tweets, Lara. I saw a convo between that guy, I think, and OLV, saying that there was a car chase scene that would go Friday night well into Saturday morning, and then it would be a wrap.

Chances are rising that "An Enemy" will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival for the simple reason that some other high profile movies won't be completed in time (Paris Match). The line-up will be announced next week on Thursday.

UltraViolet said...

Interesting, Hagen. I don't want them to rush it, but I'd love to see Jake at Cannes with a movie debut. Zodiac was fun, but it wasn't as exciting as a never seen before premiere.

Of course, you also have to worry about the Boos from the mercurial Cannes crowds!

Jake is apparently not limiting himself to adult East Coast classics: Make Way for Ducklings.

Well, the red carpets look everywhere the same, don't they? I hope for a premiere in Cannes because it's the movie's best chance to still find a distributor in Germany (or "An Enemy" turns out to be an unlikely smash hit in France).

Of course, you also have to worry about the Boos from the mercurial Cannes crowds!

I can deal with that. ;) Though I'm by no means sure if "An Enemy" is really suitable for a premiere in Cannes. BTW "Incendies" is well worth watching, but I suspect "An Enemy" won't have a lot in common with it.

Oops almost forgot, "42" was awesome. I love Harrison Ford, his easy way of acting (becomes it comes so naturally) reminds be of Jake. Harrison is so underrated as a versatile actor, too bad "42" was not released late last year because Mr. Ford would have been a shoe in for an Oscar nom.

Gorgeous, gorgeous day! Spotted on the sunny streets of Soho Jake Gyllenhaal looking very incognito....

Chica said...

Saw 42 as well Scott and loved it! Robinson was a hero and an inspiration. I agree with you about Harrison. It's a beautiful day in NY today, happy to hear that Jake is out and about enjoying the weather.

FP said...

Harrison Ford was an idol of mine since I was a child he was Han Solo, Indiana Jones, represented to me the dream of the great American cinema. I'm very happy his new movie is doing so well:)

FP said...

Why Jake was in incognito today?

Something to dowith Anna Kendrick mmmm:)

Lara said...

Hi FP,

I share with u the passion about Harrinson Ford, He is amazing. but was not a easy way for him. Do u know that when he start in the 70´s he was so frustrated with his lack of success as an actor that he became a carpenter to supplement in his income?
He worked for Francis Ford Coppola as both a carpenter and an actor with small roles in The Conversation (1974) and Apocalypse Now (1979).

But only in 1977 when George Lucas, THE GREAT, invited him to be Han Solo (because Burt Reinolds turned down the role) helped raise his profile in Hollywood. I love him very much and I happy for his sucess. I just can not wait to sim him as Han Solo again.

I'm pretty sure Jake Gyllenhaal is on this flight. #hugs

FP said...

Hi Lara :)

yes, I knew I had done a lot of jobs including carpenter but I did not know he had worked for George Lucas!:)
it seems, to take the role that someone else had refused was the red wire and the fortune of his incredible mythological career, in fact the role of Indiana Jones, was first proposed to Mickey Rourke, who refused!:)

FP said...

*I know HE done a lot of jobs :) sorry

Hi Anon,

I think this twitter is a mistake there are many sights that jake is in NY. I dont think it is possible, well just if he is The Flash and nobody knows, that will be cool.

Thanks Lara. Was about to say, the tweet was from someone from St. Louis, boarding a plane in St. Louis, Missouri, going on vacation.

42 is top of my list for this week. Would love to hear feedback. My weekend's been kind of busy, but I hope to see it in a few days.

I think it was brilliant to cast Harrison Ford as the legendary Branch Rickey. I'm a huge fan, love him to pieces.

I was really glad to see Anna K is in NYC... ; )

Lara said...

Hi Bobbyanna, Anna K is in NYC because she's filming The Last Five Years, and also she Had to dye her hair blond, but she said just she doesn't plan to stay a blonde for long.

And FP one more time agree with u, luck girl(or whatever she is).

I saw 42 and liked it a lot. Harrison Ford veered close to caricature at times, but he was very effective at others. Chadwick Boseman was really good. The movie was moving and uncomfortable to watch and yes, at times schmaltzy. But it was an old-fashioned biopic and fit the subject matter.

A movie that makes you appreciate the central figures even more than you did before and makes you want to want to learn more.

Thanks, UV. I'm looking forward to seeing it this week.

Maybe Jake and Anna just got together as friends since she's working in NYC, but I wouldn't mind seeing them as a couple. Their chemistry in EOW was really sweet, especially in those pap pics, that scene that never made it in the movie.

Hasn't she recently ended her last relationship?

There is a video of Jake in a medical building in LA, which was uploaded on April 6th, 2013.

Is this recent or an older one? I can't remember.

Lara said...

Hi Sasha,

Anna Kendrick split from long-term boyfriend, director Edgar Wrigh, now in March. She is NY to filming The Last Five Years.

About the vídeo, Jake was in LA in January maybe he was at medical center that time. but its just a teory, I´m not sure.

Just a quick reminder: Jake will attend the Spring Benefit (“A Garden Grows in Harlem”) of The Edible Schoolyard NYC tonight. Hopefully we'll get some pictures of him.

Edible Schoolyard NYC at P.S. 7, Harlem 2013
Our Spring Benefit, “A Garden Grows in Harlem,” will raise funds to build our Manhattan Showcase School, opening this year at P.S. 7 in East Harlem. The evening will include dinner for approximately 350 guests, prepared by 18 of New York’s finest chefs, brought together by award-winning chef David Chang.

From his haircut this looks like it was filmed at least more than a year ago. It is an old video I think.

Pathé International has changed the production status of "An Enemy" from 'post production' to 'completed'. I guess Denis Villeneuve hasn't changed much of the movie - if anything - since its first test screening, as he worked on "Prisoners" until a week ago.

This absolutely trumps your Snookie sighting.

Wow!

Jake is quoted a few times in the Vogue article on Carey Mulligan. I hope she doesn't mind that he reworked his quote about RDJ for her ;)

Mulligan, most decidedly, is not. Ever since her Oscar nomination for 2009’s An Education, her approach toward the fishbowl of Hollywood fame has resembled the frowning puzzlement of a child prodigy staring down her first concert-hall audience, wondering what all these people could possibly want. “I once put my hand on my hip on the red carpet and regretted it instantly,” she says. As Jake Gyllenhaal, who acted opposite her in Brothers and has since become a close friend, says, “If it doesn’t feel true to her, she doesn’t do it.” Right after her career had “gone from zero to 60,” he recalls, “they were telling her she should get a publicist, and she was going, ‘I don’t understand why I would need a publicist.’ Her focus has always been the work.” ...

Mulligan is a creature of the present tense. “It’s the reason for the unpredictability with which she exists in the world, and which she exudes when you’re watching her on-screen,” notes Gyllenhaal. ...

The other day she walked out of the Coen brothers’ new film, Inside Llewyn Davis, in which she plays a fiery-tempered folksinger, and burst into tears, so unhappy with her performance was she. “She’s incredible in it,” says Gyllenhaal. “Unbelievably good, playing the exact opposite of any part you’ve ever seen her in. A really good actor has fifteen choices in their pocket. A great actor has 150. She tricks you into thinking she has fifteen. But by the time you’ve figured that out, she’s 150 paces ahead of you.” ...

Since filming the Coen brothers’ movie, she’s taken almost a year off, something that would have sent her into a spiral a few years ago—“I feel like I should have gone off and built a well or something,” she says—but acting is no longer “the focus of my life. It’s what I love doing but it’s not everything.” She’s spent the time decorating and furnishing her home with Mumford, actually a childhood friend with whom she reunited after Gyllenhaal took her to a private Mumford & Sons concert in Nashville two years ago. They got engaged just before she set off for the Gatsby shoot in Australia and were married upon her return in a converted barn in Somerset, in a wedding tent adorned with hay bales. “Marcus is a lovely man,” says Refn. “Carey’s the real thing. To me they’re like the perfect couple.”

There's a quote from Tobey M, another painful reminder that Jake should be the one playing Nick Carraway.

I listened to the book on my way to the movies yesterday. Jake's reading is a little subdued at first, but when the other characters kick in, it really picks up. I am enjoying his voices for the different characters. And then there was a preview for the movie, and I did get more excited for the film. So mission accomplished on that score, marketers!

Also, Carey M wears some great dresses in the Vogue photos.
