Trading Day

Jake Gyllenhaal has talked a lot about how much he enjoyed getting to know the life and world of police officers. Yesterday, he got to experience the world of finance as part of ICAP Charity Day.

Jake was there as a representative of New Eyes for the Needy. Here's how ICAP works:

Since its creation, ICAP has always given money to charity. In 1993, when the firm had grown to around 100 people in London, it was decided to do something on a larger and more innovative scale; something that would make a significant difference to charities. The idea of ICAP Charity Day was born; a day on which all revenues and commissions are given away to just a few charities, meaning each would receive a large amount of money which would really make a difference to their operations. This gave the firm and its customers a unique way of contributing to society, especially in view of its position in the financial world.

Looks like photobombing was the sport of the day!

Rachel Weisz, Michael Phelps, Michelle Williams, Reese Witherspoon, Bridget Moynahan and Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski were also among the participants.

The deals have been counted and the results are in, can't believe it but we raised £11 million for charity yesterday! More than £100 million now raised since 1993. WOW!

Kudos to all involved!

What a great way to raise money for a good cause, and yeah, the photobombs are hilarious! They're all having a lot of fun! I enjoyed all the crazy costumes, too. Looks like a party!

no she didn't, because no one else disturbed him on the train so she didn't want to be the weird one. I'M SO JEALOUS TOO.

Hello, Daniela! Thanks for being the first to comment :) Jake does seem happy these days. It's always good to see that smile.

That did look like quite a party, Bobbyanna. And I am amazed at how much money they raised.

Thanks for the clarification on "guy," Monica!

Thanks for the benefit info, Tweety. I hope they also raise a lot of money.

Hagen, thanks for the Terrence Howard news. Still trying to decide how I feel about most of the cast besides Jake.

Chica, I'm not really a fan after reading some of his interviews. But I hope he'll be good in the movie.

Scott, the facial expressions in the ICAP pictures are hilarious.

That was yesterday. Today:

um....just had lunch sitting by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Is he as small in person as people say he is?

First Keanu Reeves, and now Jake Gyllenhaal... you are a high profile stalker, aintchya?

? He is not that small, normal height and good build. Sure is HOT!

yummers.

Lina Mayoux LOL , did u stare at him or play it super cool?

I love him..I'm officially jealous!

Alberto Iglesias is responsible for the score to "An Enemy". He was nominated three times for an Academy Award. Though I rather remember his work for Pedro Almodóvar's movies ("The Skin I Live In" for example has a very good score.)

A Catalan website reports that Jake's characters are called Abundie (?) Bell (Is that a name?) and Anthony Claire.

UltraViolet said...

I love all the different reactions to Jake sightings. Well, most of them :)

That's not a name I've ever heard, Hagen. It seems a very odd choice. But it's fun to hear more info on the movie. We need a trailer soon.

One more from lunch:

I just spoke to Jake Gyllenhaal. So there's that...
Like · Share · about an hour ago near Greenwich Village, NY ·

pls tell us everything

Well what did he say

he was at a restaurant in soho. i went over and said "hi" before i left. told him i'm a fan of his work, etc. he was super nice and humble. oh, and really, really good looking

My ultimate!!!! I hear of people seeing him all over the city. Totally jealous!

This also made me laugh:

My boss went up w/ Justin Timberlake and down w/ Jake Gyllenhaal. Knew I should have went with him #NYC #elevators

Taking a moment to complain about people who say "have went." It's "gone," people!

Canoë has backtracked on its claim that "An Enemy" will be released on July 3, 2013. The release date hasn't been set yet.

According to IMDb.com "An Enemy" will open in Russia on September 12, 2013 (it's confirmed by the Russian distributor), one week before "Prisoners".

I got the callback. I'm meeting the director tomorrow! *Think: flirting with Jake Gyllenhaal... because if I get the part, I will be!

Laure said...

I always thought the ideal time for "An Enemy"'s premiere would be a few weeks before/after "Prisoners" (the smaller, more intimist movie riding the wave of the bigger, strongly promoted one).

If "An Enemy" will open in Russia on September 12, the US premiere could be on September 6, with the world premiere the day before, at the Toronto Film Festival (5-15 Sept.). Perfect timing, I'd say.
Jake would be extremely busy again, but promoting 2 movies almost at the same time isn't unfamiliar to him. It happened in 2005 - what a year for Jake! - with "Brokeback/Proof" in Venice + Toronto. Then the premiere(s) for "Jarhead", for "Brokeback"... He could definitely do it, and we would love it.

Dennis and Jake's collaboration for "An Enemy" would benefit from all the hype surrounding "Prisoners". Not to mention, September is a better month than July for awards consideration - aren't we all nurturing big hopes for Jake's performance(s) to finally be acknowledged?

P.S. I'm glad for Jake's "Critics' Choice" nomination (for action movie, not drama, but still). In a year filled with so many terrific performances, it's a good nomination because of the BFCA's reputation. And to me it feels like the critics are somehow validating Jake while Independent Spirit wronged him...

Oh, and to all of you: hello!

UltraViolet said...

Hello, Laure - and welcome.

Not sure if it's a good idea for the movies to open so close together, but if Prisoners can boost An Enemy, that is a good thing. Showing it at Toronto really does make sense.

Thanks for the news on An Enemy, Hagen. That 7/3 date never made sense, but it's disappointing to have to wait until September. A Cannes screening would be fun.

It would be great if we got to see something from the film - a still or a clip.

Work is kicking my butt these days, so thanks to all for bringing the news. So glad Jake got a nomination today, though a little disappointed it's not in Drama.

SAG Award nominees have been announced and there was nothing for Jake or Michael. Very disappointing.

Other people who've been touted over the past few weeks for some recognition were also overlooked:Joaquin Phoenix, Leo, Jamie Foxx, Christopher Waltz, John Goodman,David Strathairn, Amy Adams, Rachel Weisz among them.

I can't really argue with the choices for Best Supporting Actor, and the Best Actor choices were not unexpected. I was just hoping SAG would've been more discerning.

Busy Phillips (who's pregnant) helped annouced the nominees. :-/

Tomorrow the GGs.

UltraViolet said...

To the 4:00 anon, we don't really need tweets from people just saying they are at the play. We know there's an audience.

That's a shame, Bobbyanna, but not unexpected. Some of those nominations are ridiculous. Javier Bardem for Skyfall and Alan Arkin in Argo were both fine, but no way were they better than Michael Pena.

Of course, MP's role was really a lead, so there's that.

FP said...

And no way Bradley Cooper was better than Jake or Joaquin Phoenix

What a shame:(

Monica said...

An absurd to see Joaquin Phoenix snubbed, but again it's all about campaign and Harvey is betting everything on SLP.
Django didn't send screeners to SAG. And EOW sent just last week.

Anonymous said...

'And no way Bradley Cooper was better than Jake or Joaquin Phoenix"

Brad is riding on coat tails of the film, the director and Jennifer Lawrence, a comedy is a not an acting stretch for Bradley Cooper. He might get squeezed out of the Oscars though by Joaquin and Leo or Jamie. And dark horse Bill Murray.

Scott said...

Too bad about Sag but I still do not think it's EOW, Michael or Jake's year. I think SAG actors are just as snotty as the Spriit Awards. They seem to go safe except I am surprised by Skyfall nominations for acting, why not Daniel though or Christian Bale?

Its just not Jake's year again but look at it this way, maybe next year will be and there is so much to look forward to. Besides the two films, he has Mississipi Grind still to developed. Beside Oscar wins tend to slow down careers.

Monica said...

He might get squeezed out of the Oscars though by Joaquin and Leo or Jamie. And dark horse Bill Murray.

Harvey will not let that happen. Bradley will be nominated.

Bradley is doing a great campaign.

UV, the new film of David O.Russel will be shot in Boston.

Sorry to see there were no SAG noms for EOW. Though I didn't really expect it, I still kept my fingers crossed (will now keep doing that for the GG noms!).

AAA said...

Sorry, that clearly should have been BWW...

Scott said...

"Bradley is doing a great campaign"

I like Bradley but I don't consider him a serious actor, maybe a nomination will change that for him.

bobbyanna said...

Well,I think that all Bradley has to do is show up. The firm that's representing him is doing an awesome job, and of course he's riding the Harvey-Hype. He's obviously completely on board with this. Actively and enthusiastically doing whatever it takes.

Certain PR agencies and Publicists manage awards season campaigns more effectively than others. It sure helps when everyone is on board.

Harvey & DOR have to know their chances of winning Oscars are slim to none this year, with the exception of Jennifer Lawrence, who has an honest shot.

I wouldn't mind a bit if Harvey Weinstein backed Jake and produced or distributed one of his films. That would really be something. ; )

Hi Laure! "An Enemy" needs an American distributor (Pathé International (page 8): "The US sale is being handled by the producers and WME. Delivery date is spring 2013.")

Distribution rights have been sold for following countries/regions: Brunei, Canada, Central America, CIS, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Middle East, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South America, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey and UK. I'm glad that "An Enemy" will be released in some countries that didn't show EoW in cinemas, like Japan, South Korea and South Africa.

EoW has finally hit $10 million outside of the US, but is still well below "Brothers" and "Rendition".

I think you all might be surprised by the GG, I am still shaking my head at Richard Gere for best actor. Not shaking in a bad way, don't be surpised if he or Washington pull off the win. Washington will be nominated for an Oscar again.

Jackman will win best actor -musical/comedy and probably an Oscar nom, he's due.

And how can you chose SLP over Lemiz?

The comments on Les Miserables are not so good. The film is a score of 56 on Metacritic. Many people didn't like it.

Only Anne Hathaway is a unanimity. I've read mixed reviews for the acting of Hugh jackman.
The film only received 4 nominations for the Golden Globe. Don't be surprised if Bradley Cooper win or SLP win best film.

Anonymous said...

Golden Globes are international, foreign press and all. I would not be surprised if Jackman wins the GG.

Anonymous said...

Argo could be the big sleeper, surprised that Ben A did get best acting nomination.

Anonymous said...

meant did not get GG

Sag actor said...

Not surprised that EOW didn't get a mention for the GG'S, the field is too crowded.

Glad that ARGO got a nom., It seemed to have been shut out with the other critic awards so far.

I will be surprised if Cooper winds over Jackson and Annie is a shoo-in IMO.

I cycled to work today. Standing in 5th Avenue traffic waiting for the lights to change I saw Jake Gyllenhaal. We made eye contact. Score.

Jake just finished, and he looked & sounded great. (Not quite so scraggily.)

Okay, I just watched Jake’s segment (thanks a lot to IJH!) and am sorry to say I disagree. I think he looked and sounded very nervous. His eyes were constantly shifting to his left and his voice/tonal rhythm was off. Did people actually throw bottles at him, or why would he make that comment? I think he did very well - but to me it felt as it that was down to his professionalism, not because he felt at ease (not that most people would on live TV).
I hope he enjoyed himself more at the model phone bank!

Mary said...

I thought too that he looked and sounded a little nervous but I just figured it was because it was a live telecast butt he looked great.

Rachel said...

I'm not sure the bottle (and by the way they're plastic, not glass) was thrown at him or in that general direction, nevertheless, if it had not happened right at the onset of his spiel he probably would have sounded more natural. That would throw anybody's game off, no?

Hagen said...

Jake spoke in a much deeper voice than usual and sounded a bit like Obama. ;)

UltraViolet said...

I think he sounded great. I was expecting the usual serious and seemingly humorless delivery we've gotten at the last few awards show. He seemed much more relaxed and managed to go with the flow, even with a beer bottle flying.

I was happy, too, that he took calls.

Disappointed in the Globe nominations but not surprised, I guess.

It's a shame End of Watch didn't get love frmo the independent community, as it should have. The major awards were always a longshot.

Hagen said...

The Daily Beast: "Snub: Jack Gyllenhaal, End of Watch. There are so many great actors this year, so he was always a long shot, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association supposedly really liked David Ayers’s gritty cop drama. As they should have: Gyllenhaal is fantastic in the role, giving a career best performance. But he just couldn’t edge past weighty turns from Lincoln’s Daniel Day-Lewis, Flight’s Denzel Washington and The Sessions’ John Hawkes. Unfortunately, a snub from the Globes means he’ll probably be sidelined for the rest of awards season. His co-star, Michael Pena, was also robbed of a supporting actor nomination."

Go vote for People's choice and vote often.

bobbyanna said...

I interpreted it not as Jake seeming 'nervous' as much as maybe distracted and rushed, straining to read his script in an alloted period of time. I thought he was very enthusiastic and having fun, so I was generally happy with his presentation.

It's interesting to read the various analyses of the GG nominations, SAG, etc. Glad the Daily Beast showed Jake & EoW some love. And yes, we can still vote many times for People's Choice.

FP said...

I think Jke was great:)

Chica said...

I really didn't think he came off as nervous either last night. As Bobbyanna has pointed out, it was more that he was a bit distracted. It's was live TV 100% comfortable, but I thought he did great.

No really big surprises with the GG nominations. Luv the HP article, I agree completely.

@TiffyLau ... Enjoy... ;-) http://tmblr.co/ZtH3WyZGLU00

Scott said...

He was not nervous, it was loud and people were drinking and very boisterous as the night went on. Poor Steve Buscemi had to endure some guys, the beard bunch or something like that who he was honoring but you could tell they had a little too much to drink and were all over Steve. He was trying really hard to stay on script but those men were a bit out of control. And that was earlier in the concert. Drinking does nutty things to people and the MSG crowd was massive.

Laure said...

Thank you, UltraViolet, for the welcoming!
And to you, Hagen, for the correction and the link. I had no idea “An Enemy” doesn't have a US distributor yet. Spring of 2013 as a release date? There goes my theory then! LOL
Isn't WME Jake's new agency? (and Jackman's, Bale's etc.?) They better promote “An Enemy” properly 'cause – in order to make an impact – a small, arthouse, foreign (Canadian-French) production needs all the push The Powers That Be can offer. Spring is so far away from the 2013 nominations. I hope they won't forget about Jake come awards time!
On the other hand, Spring could mean May – just in time for Cannes! It doesn't have to be in competition. Maybe Pathé could manage an “hors-concours avanpremiere”. I know, this is a conversation for next year, UltraViolet. :D

Laure said...

On more topical and timely subjects:

– Couldn't see the entire concert but the following tweets were pretty clear. Jake or should I say his facial hair made an impression. Uninformed people were shocked, amused, bemused, impressed, outraged by it. No matter how many times Jake has explained that “it's for the character in my new play”, many people still have no idea, and they mock him. Damn, his PR staff is useless.
Thanks to IHJ, I finally saw Jake's segment. My 2 cents: although he arrived there right off the Laura Pels stage (still had the hand tattoo), he was in a good mood, energized and very present, as he likes to say. IMO, he wasn't nervous at all. His voice sounded a bit different 'cause he had to speak louder than usual and he had a serious message to deliver. It's a challenge to cover the noise of a spirited Madison Square Garden arena. He sincerely wanted to be there, and it showed. Plus, he managed to be funny and flirty at the end of the presentation.

(Still, I hope Jake has learned something during the last months: he can do whatever he wants on his free time – but, for any promotional event, no matter how well dressed he is, an out-of-control beard is distracting. Whatever his message is (a movie, a play, a charity he believes in), it won't be received properly if the public and the journalists are distracted by the huge amount of facial hair. He may not like it, he may see it as a limitation of his personal freedom, but he's a public figure, an A-list actor. Looks have an impact, unfortunately. End of rant.)

– The chances for awards nominations were slim with such fierce competition (outstanding performances in powerful/epic movies + ordinary performances in movies backed-up by Big Kahunas like Weinstein). Nevertheless, I had hopes for the more suitable Independent Spirit (they turned out to be blatantly unfair to both Jake and David Ayer) and also for the Golden Globes – due to their split categories, dramas/comedies, I thought there were more chances. I was wrong.
I guess that's it for this year. Out with the old, in with the new: the promising “An Enemy”, the intriguing “Prisoners”, and the enigma that is “Mississippi Grind”. And whatever else will come Jake's way. It's gonna be interesting for sure.

Sorry to be so absent this past week. December is a hellacious month for me at work, and it won't be getting any better.

Thanks for keeping the conversation going.

I didn't comment when it was posted, but this made me laugh:

We just sat 20 feet from Jake Gyllenhaal for 2 hours and managed to leave w/o having any charges pressed.

It is distressing to think An Enemy doesn't have a US distributor, but I assume the move has been well received or Denis Villeneuve wouldn't be directing Prisoners.

Are we sure that An Enemy doesn't have a distributor in the US? I think about having read on Gyllencrazy that there is a distributor yet, I hope not to be wrong.

Another screening. Interesting. Hope we get some reports.

FP, we'll have to investigate. I can't remember if I head there was or just assumed it.

ILikeMonaLisa, thanks for the follow up. I hope it was just an exaggerated or erroneous report.

Hagen said...

FP, Variety reported on distribution deals for "An Enemy" concerning Singapore and India. They would definitely mention a US deal. And Pathé International declared in its lineup for the "Asia Television Forum" (December 4-7, 2012) that the producers and WME would handle the US sale of "An Enemy".

Laurent Spillemaecker, Compositing Supervisor at Rodeo FX (a visual effects company), said in an interview published on November 27th, 2012: "We are currently working on NOW YOU SEE ME, AN ENEMY by Denis Villeneuve as well as an undisclosed ILM project." So I guess the movie isn't completely finished yet. ("Delivery date: Spring 2013" probably means that they still need some time until the work is done.)

For comparison Open Road acquired the distribution rights for EoW in February 2012, long after the movie was shot in August 2011.

UV, Collider already reported in April 2011 that Villeneuve would direct "Prisoners".
