jakegyllenhaal: Took me 2 hours to photoshop the rest of the cast out of this picture.

Jake Gyllenhaal and the Spiderman crew took London by storm this week. Photos, interviews, talk shows - the Marvel machine is off and running. And proving that even movie stars take touristy travel photos.

The first critic reactions to #SpiderManFarFromHome are nearly all very positive, with many praising the movie's performances (particularly from @TomHolland1996, Jake Gyllenhaal & @Zendaya), humor, and action!

#SpiderManFarFromHome is a very worthy follow-up to the phenomenal #Homecoming. Tom Holland proves (once again) that he's the definitive Peter Parker, and his chemistry with @Zendaya is legitimately sweet and engaging.
Jake Gyllenhaal's Quentin Beck is, shall we say, an intriguing character from start to finish. Can't spoil much about him, but Gyllenhaal has an absolute blast playing him, and the relationship between #Mysterio and Peter is pretty fascinating, especially toward the end

Marveltalk @Marveltalk01
#SpidermanFarFromHome is SUCH a good movie! Jake Gyllenhaal suits up & completely embraces his role in its entirety & he’s clearly having a blast. This is such a refreshing film after the heaviness of #EndGame. The post-credit scenes are a MUST WATCH & will blow your dang mind!

Steven Weintraub Verified account @colliderfrosty
absolutely loved #SpiderManFarFromHome. Captures the spirit of the comics and mixes in some amazing movie magic. The second the film ended I wanted to watch it again. #JakeGyllenhaal is fantastic as Mysterio.

Kevin McCarthy Verified account @KevinMcCarthyTV
FAR FROM HOME has dethroned Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 & is now favorite Spider-Man film.
What’s insane is that I can’t even tell u why I’m so in love with this film because it would be a spoiler.
Gyllenhaal is incredible. Holland re-confirms as the best Spidey to date. Amazing.

Sean Keane @SpectacularSean
Major kudos in particular to Jake Gyllenhaal for his super engaging performance as complex character Mysterio, and Zendaya, who brings depth in her massively expanded role as MJ.

Brandon Davis Verified account @BrandonDavisBD
Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the MCU’s most entertaining characters ever. He’s so unpredictable and fun and brings A LOT to #FarFromHome. The chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Tom Holland is top of the line.
Gyllenhaal is so damn good. He was just showing off this point. He plays a conflicted, interesting Mysterio so well. #FarFromHome

Kara Warner Verified account @karawarner
#SpiderManFarFromHome! What a fun, solid sequel. Tom Holland so incredibly charming, will watch him in any/all things. Jake Gyllenhaal gets way more to do than expected, clearly had a ball doing it. Also still loving Zendaya's MJ.

Spider-Man: Far From Home made me smile from start to finish. Its got huge reveals and exciting set pieces but the way it builds off Endgame to to dive deeper into Peter’s emotions is really what make it soar. Mysterio also rules. I can’t wait to see it again.

Mike Ryan Verified account @mikeryan
Absolutely loved SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. I’m a huge Mysterio fan and Gyllenhaal nails him. Also the movie is very clever (and funny) how it handles the fallout post ENDGAME in explaining how this world works now.

A reaction tweet: #SpiderManFarFromHome is wonderful. It’s funny and clever and filled with smart twists. (It also made me have incredibly visceral memories of class trips of yore.) I didn’t leave the theater sad! I am not worried about superheroes’ emotional states! Zendaya!!

Devan Coggan Verified account @devancoggan
I had a big dumb smile on my face through all of #SpiderManFarFromHome. It makes for a lovely companion piece to Endgame, but it's also a top-notch Peter story.
Oh, and Jake Gyllenhaal is clearly having the time of his LIFE.

Some fun SITPWG tweets. I missed a lot with the Spiderman onslaught.

when you call the theatre Jake is at next year to get tickets and I’m like “i would like the very front row” them “ I don’t blame you it’s jake gyllenhaal” I SCREAMED

can’t sleep so I got a ticket to see JAKE GYLLENHAAL IN LONDON IN JUNE 2020

Going to see Jake Gyllenhaal in Sunday in the Park with George next August. Four rows from the front. IF YOU KNOW ME, YOU KNOW HOW MUCH, AND FOR HOW LONG, I'VE LOVED JAKE GYLLENHAAL. I'M SCREAMING. 😭😍

Put money aside for my phone bill next week, just spent it on a ticket to see Jake Gyllenhaal in Sunday in the Park with George next year. Oops. Phones are overrated anyway.

LOL

I'm sure most of you have seen Jake's latest IG video - a quick London recap. Tom and Jake answered a series of questions.

Hi Monica! Good to see you :) There are definitely hints that this isn't a one-off. I guess we'll see.

Aww at the hospital visit.

IHJV has plenty more videos from the London promo. Samuel L Jackson seems to get a kick out of Jake. And vice versa, naturally.

Jake and Samuel having fun

I generally love it when people have fun during interviews. A press junket must be boring enough at times!

OT: We finally have telephone and internet! After living in our house for almost four months! We have doves (giant ones, not the ordinary flying rats) nesting somewhere around our house, I already thought of training them to deliver mail! I finally made it out of communication-stoneage to the modern world! YAY!

Defo not OT: Got my first ticket for SITPWG on June 11th. I am soooo excited! I hope I can do one more show the following saturday, I have to wait until mid-July before I can book one more. I don´t think I´m going to risk to queue for last-minute-tickets on the day of the show. Anyone else going to the first show?

Monica said...

What show?

UltraViolet said...

Monica, Diana was talking about Sunday in the Park next year.

Jake and Tom on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. They start about 90 minutes in. Youtube clip of Unpopular Opinion. The Sean Paul/Unpopular Opinion segment was a real hit!

Unpopular Opinion takes up most of their time, but it is longer on the Radio 1clip than the YouTube version.

UltraViolet said...

Lots of good/great reviews for FFH and for Jake/Mysterio. And tons of happy tweets after the Radio 1 appearance. And so many videos from the premiere and other places. Too much!

Absolute Radio joint Jake and Tom interview

Some fun twitter tidbits:

Of course, Holland isn’t alone in driving Peter’s story — he’s excellently paired with Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck/Mysterio, who makes flying around with a fishbowl on his head a captivating addition to the MCU’s repertoire of superpowers. Gyllenhaal Gyllenhaals all over Far From Home, adding a potentially illegal amount of charm to every single line reading and gesture. He’s so conspicuously charismatic that every character who encounters him appears to have a moment where they come to the realization that Mysterio could beat them with a pillowcase full of bricks and they’d say thank you. And that’s how you cast a comic book movie.

That's from a review but is SUCH a twitter/IG comment.

A+ tweet: I reviewed (and really liked) #SpiderManFarFromHome. It's a difficult movie to talk about without spoiling anything. The big lesson is Jake Gyllenhaal should be in everything.

Ten minutes with British GQ

LOL: this is like if Chris Kataan's character in Night at the Roxbury got famous and had a movie made about him and Jake Gyllenhaal played him in the movie. .

Okay, so the first thing you need to know is that Jake Gyllenhaal is one of our very best celebrities. Disagree? Grow up! I'm not going to sugarcoat the truth; adults are speaking here! The actor, who famously stands 5-foot, 11-and-a-half inches, max morning height, is 1) very talented, 2) a super zaddy, 3) probably very weird, and 4) game for anything. All four powers combined in a BBC Radio One interview he and pocket snack Tom Holland did while promoting the new film, Spider-man: Many Different Versions of Hotness for You to Consider. During a segment in which listeners call in to voice their unpopular opinions, Jake Gyllenhaal revealed himself as the biggest, hottest, and most enthusiastic Sean Paul fan.

The Atlantic
Jake Gyllenhaal is the Real Star of SM: FFH
I’ll simply say that Gyllenhaal, who has a real talent for balancing charm, rage, and utter ludicrousness, is excellent as Mysterio, using the hero’s left-field presentation to satirize the ongoing phenomenon of cultural worship for do-gooders in colorful spandex," writes David Sims.

Oh how I loved #SpiderManFarFromHome and the surprisingly eccentric and unexpected rollercoaster journey it took me on. Easily one of the strongest sequels Marvel has done in the MCU thus far. Man crush on Gyllenhaal continues in earnest too - he's so bloody good!

The new movie is one part epilogue to the cataclysmic events of 'Avengers: Endgame,' one part goofy high school vacation flick, and one part evidence that Jake Gyllenhaal makes everything he's in better.

#SpiderManFarFromHome made me so happy! It’s my new favourite Spidey movie. Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal are both brilliant. It’s very funny and weird - there’s stuff I never thought I’d see on screen. There’s a moment that made me literally jump out of my seat with joy.

Cute story:

Jake G was the first celeb I saw in the wild in NYC. I got off the train at Columbus Circle and on my way out saw a dude and was like "oh he's cute" and a millisecond later realized it was Jake fucking Gyllenhaal. Then a girl who was looking at her phone bumped into him/He caught her because she stumbled and the moment of recognition she had when she looked up at him was unreal but he just smiled and asked if she was okay then got on his train. That poor girl was so shook/

god i wish that were me...

I feel fortunate to have even witnessed it. How did she survive actually experiencing it?

Happy 4th of July to all American Gyllenbabblers!

I'm going to watch "Spider-Man" this weekend. The film is doing very well at the boxoffice (Deadline):

After posting a record Tuesday opening day of $39.3M, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home is looking at a second day of $26M, and possibly even higher if the fanboys continue to come out tonight. That brings the Jon Watts’ directed sequel’s two-day tally to $65.3M. International per Nancy is at $150M through yesterday, a bulk of that from China; that’s $215.3M so far. Rivals are seeing a 6-day of $150M by Sunday, $500M Worldwide. At 4,634 theaters, Far From Home is the widest July release ever, and the second widest release ever after Avengers: Endgame which opened at 4,662. Yesterday, Far From Home repped more than 60% of Tuesday’s Fandango presales.

As we reported earlier, Screen Engine/ComScore PostTrak exits are fantastic with 4 1/2 stars last night for general audiences (who made up 68% of the crowd), 5 stars for parents and 4 1/2 stars for kids under 12 (combined 32% of the crowd). That’s a great 76% definite recommend. Far From Home drew a crowd that was 63% male, with under 25 dominating at 56%. In overall audiences, Far From Home pulled in 37% men under 25, 31% men over 25, 20% females under 25 and 18% females over 25. PostTrak polls throughout a pic’s two-week run.

Happy July 4th!!! I plan on seeing Spiderman Far from Home over the weekend!

UltraViolet said...

Chica, hi! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend in the US and regular weekend elsewhere :)

So glad to see Spiderman doing so well at the box office. I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. I was not anticipating that, lol. The teen stuff was very well done, very enjoyable. And Jake was great as Mysterio. He really does steal the movie. It did make me wistful for what might have been if Jake had been given a superhero role. But I'm happier he has gotten to do more diverse roles all these years.

Cartier has posted several photos and videos of Jake looking really good and like he hasn't aged in 10 years.

Fun but also frustrating podcast discussing four of Jake's B-side or less-well-received films (Proof, Brothers, PoP and Str). It's great to hear them praise Jake: "Shame on the Academy for not nominating him for Stronger." Amen! And funny when they talk about Jake v. Tobey in Brothers and how Jake should have just played both roles and how the viewer is so grateful whenever Jake shows up to save the film, lol. And how he makes all of his films better just by being in them. Frustrating in some parts, e.g.m discussing hRendition in passing and really panning it.

IHJ Videos has uploaded a ton of new Spiderman videos.

Look - a Mysterio emoji!

UltraViolet said...

Fair warning if you listen to that podcasts - there are Mysterio spoilers at the end, when they discuss FFH.

Hagen said...

"Spider-Man: Far From Home" was more entertaining than I expected. (Though I don't feel sorry that I missed "Endgame" with that silly "Blip".) Fortunately Jake's character Mysterio is more down to earth than the trailers suggested. It's a substantial role, definitely a showcase for his acting skills. The visual effects looked great. Looking at the social media response, the Marvel fans seem to be pleased, too.

After one week in release "Spider-Man: Far From Home" has passed "The Day After Tomorrow" as the highest grossing film in Jake's career (Boxofficemojo).

BlueJean said...

"After one week in release "Spider-Man: Far From Home" has passed "The Day After Tomorrow" as the highest grossing film in Jake's career."

I was just thinking about that the other day. FFH was the highest grossing film in The Netherlands last week, and last weekend. Too bad I haven't seen it yet ;)

There's a nice article in the NY Times: Men Who Aren’t Afraid of Tears
Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge grapple with love, grief and vulnerability in “Sea Wall/A Life,” paired one-act plays on Broadway.

“Sea Wall/A Life” will open on Broadway on August 8.

Vanity Fair said...

Cracknell recalls the rehearsal process—seen here in these exclusive photos provided to Vanity Fair—as a sort of “mania,” a period of exploring, reimagining, and playing, despite the grim subject matter. (Sturridge plays a father and husband who’s left facing down his grief after a family holiday takes a tragic turn). The production debuted in a limited, sold-out run at the Public Theater earlier this year, and opened in previews at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre last week. “It was often just me and one of the actors, and it would sort of veer between total hysteria—I mean, genuinely—and kind of hilariously, and almost stand-up. They would be—both of them, particularly Jake—playing and kind of doing stupid voices and dancing around the room, and then would sort of drop in to this very, very emotionally vulnerable work,” Cracknell explains. “It was interesting because I think we were trying to hold this duality the whole time about it being really funny—elements of it are like stand-up. And then it’s touching something really real. There was this constant sense of exploration.”

I have just read this interview about "Sea Wall/A Life" that I really liked:
Playbill - Why Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge say their broadway play was a huge risk

I know that I will always miss out on a lot of things since I´m living in Europe, but I am especially sad that I am not going to be able to see this. It must be a very special experience, having Jake and Tom interact with the audience the way they do here.

There has also been a posting by SeaWall/ALife on twitter and I believe insta that they´re adding conversations with the audience after the plays on every coming wednesday.

UltraViolet said...

Hope everyone had their fun. Enough with the anonymous comments about Jeanne and her IG and questioning their levels of public affection. This is not the place for those discussions. Tossing in a comment about Jake's career is not fooling anyone.

UltraViolet said...

Thanks, Hagen, for all the play links. There has been a lot of publicity. Loved the NY Times piece. And the Playbill article was also good, Diana.

It is a shame that more people won't be able to see this. It would be ideal for filming - I think it would translate well on video. But that's probably just a pipe dream.

I hope to get to one of those post-show talks, too!

In a New Broadway Play, Jake Gyllenhaal Attempts Something Radical: Normalcy

I wish I had more time to search for interviews...

Jake had the Sea Wall / A Life opening night on Thursday. Several celebrity friends went which was nice to see, including Anne Hathaway who looked so gorgeous.

There are pics of Jake on stage at the curtain call, and he looks quite emotional and I think very drained. This show must take a lot of emotional energy to perform night after night. I wish I could see it.

Just out of curiosity I had a look at ticket sales for the shows next week, and there are so many tickets available still. I'm not sure if that's normal for broadway shows to only sell out the day before or day of a show, but I was surprised.

UltraViolet said...

I know what you mean, anon. I was concerned about that, as well. The shows seem to be close to selling out by showtime. I think their capacity numbers are good but the average price is lower than maximum. In other words, they are offering tickets at a discount. I assume the (mostly) good reviews will help. It received the NY Times Critic's Pick designation again. And WOM seems to be amazing. I've seen very few pans from personal accounts.

I think the prices are too high, so it's not a surprise that they are offering lower priced seats.

Diana, I liked that article, as well. I get the point, but it does annoy me that everyone focuses on Jake's extreme changes for roles and ignores things like Demolition. And what is Jeff Bauman but the epitome of an everyday guy? Oh well. Some perceptions persist despite all evidence.
