Master babble

The Hollywood Reporter has posted the transcript of Jake Gyllenhaal's Hollywood Masters conversation. And there is some Grade A Gyllenbabble in it. Like all conversations that are transcribed, some things just don't translate. And sometimes, Jake's mind doesn't, either. It's a great read. And I hope someday we can see the whole thing. But we do at least have the part where he tales about Brokeback Mountain and Heath Ledger:

Some excerpts:

GALLOWAY: How did you prepare for that?

GYLLENHAAL: Heath and I spent a lot of time, a lot of things were just about... The biggest thing, and this is going to sound odd, but the biggest thing that I did was: I had not spent a ton of time around animals as a kid. It wasn't a connection that I had that was just in me. Heath, you know, would walk up to a horse and could like silence the horse. [LAUGHTER] Do you know what I mean? Just literally he'd be like, "Shh shh." And he'd be like [MAKES HORSE SOUND]. [LAUGHTER] And then he'd be like, "I'm going to get on you now." [MAKES HORSE SOUND]. And then he'd get on the horse. I'd be like, "I'm going to get on you." They'd be like “Pfft, f—k off!”

... sometimes there are very simple things that are enough. You know? Sometimes you can be in a scene and you can start literally moving your body in the way that you would emotionally, and it will access that feeling. You don't have to go back and think about how this person yelled at you when you were a baby, and blah, blah, blah. You just have to hunch over and all of a sudden. When you hold, particularly for me in that scene, when you hold a woman in your arms who's saying "what's going on?" That's enough for me. You know? And I can't give her an answer. That's enough for me.

Again, I would again bring up Amy, but there was this moment last night, it was like 3 a.m. and we were exhausted. She had done two super-brutal scenes, very hard emotional scenes, and she was just spent. And sometimes, when you’re in that space, you’re trying to find anything you can — like coffee or running down the street — to get motivation. And she just said, “That was too perfect. Can we just do it again, just one more?” And there was something about her not wanting to have regret, wanting to know when she walked home back to her trailer — she went home at 5 a.m. — that, “All right, I left as much as I could on the table.”

There are lots of great parts to the interview. And some poignant moments.

Watch the clip and you'll know, Anon.

I've just read the entire transcript. I'd love to see the whole thing, but I doubt they'll put it all on YouTube. So glad we have the BBM bit though.

BlueJean, I would also love to watch the whole interview :)

There were some lovely things he said. Like Maggie, I too am looking forward to him (hopefully) becoming a dad.

I did find it interesting his views on working with Fincher. Wish he wasn't in a position to be so diplomatic and just say 'yeah, that dude is horrible'.

I've been a little disinterested in Nocturnal Animals because I wasn't that fussed about the book, but after reading the lovely things he said about Amy Adams (and admittedly, I completely forgot what a talent she is), I think they'll play off each other really well.

Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving

Sal, I had the same thought about Fincher. I wish Jake would feel comfortable just saying he's a jerk.

I haven't read Nocturnal Animals, so I'm almost totally in the dark on what could happen.

LOL. Nightcrawler the film is trending worldwide due to all the reporting antics.

Oh man, the tweets about CNN/MSNBC and Nightcrawler were hilarious. And scary. What a terrible day for journalism. An assortment:

https://twitter.com/MaximEristavi/status/672838381626392576

Wow. @MSNBC and @CNN made Jake Gyllenhaal's character in Nightcrawler look like Woodward & Bernstein.

I think, i might be wrong here, both CNN and MSNBC are owned by Jake Gyllenhaal's character from Nightcrawler. #CNN #msnbc #Nightcrawler

Like 'Nightcrawler', but instead of a super creepy Jake Gyllenhaal, it's loads of members of the press. And real.

Brave how Jake Gyllenhaal really let himself go for Nightcrawler II: The Creepening

We've just entered the Nightcrawler level of coverage. The only thing missing is a gaunt & unsettling Jake Gyllenhal

Was expecting Jake Gyllenhaal to come out on CNN from behind the camera pulling that Nightcrawler routine. Geez.

@CNN @MSNBC stop trying. jake gyllenhaal did it better. also he's way hotter #nightcrawler

Hey @MSNBC, you do realize Jake Gyllenhaal was the *villain* in Nightcrawler, right?

If anything good can come from today's news it's more people seeing "Nightcrawler." Jake Gyllenhaal's best performance & sleazy Bill Paxton!

Every Jake Gyllenhaal movie comes true eventually.

Kudos on that NIGHTCRAWLER Oscar campaign, though
(Even if it's a year late.)

Other people are saying it, but it bears repeating--
This is literally Jake Gyllenhaal's Nightcrawler.

Silver lining: Maybe more people will see NIGHTCRAWLER? Seriously fantastic movie.

Pretty upset Jake Gyllenhaal isn't in this "Nightcrawler" sequel.

So MSNBC's going straight Gyllenhall in Nightcrawler, huh? NOT CREEPY AT ALL

@TVMcGee @lmcgaughy @MSNBC I liked it better when Jake Gyllenhaal did it and we all understood it was wrong #Nightcrawler

Media going full Gyllenhaal Nightcrawler right now. I don't think that's how you're actually supposed to do it

Thanks for the Variety link, BJ. Sharon Waxman of The Wrap posted the podcastshe did with Jake. Some new stuff in there, but it kills me at this point to hear people asking Jake about losing weight and then training for Southpaw. Really? That's the best you got, to quote Billy Hope.

Harvey Weinstein also penned an editorial for The Hollywood Reporter, bemoaning that Oscar season kills the chances for a lot of good movies and performances.

Yes, Alanis, that is ironic!

I've released two films in the "off season" this year, Woman in Gold and Southpaw, that feature unbelievable lead performances from Helen Mirren and Jake Gyllenhaal, respectively, both worthy of all the adulation and respect they received from critics and audiences at the time of their release — but because of the stigma of their release dates, aren't taken as seriously as they should be. I am thrilled Helen gave a completely different but equally brilliant performance more recently in Bleecker Street's Trumbo so voters keep her at the top of their minds. However, it's completely puzzling, and I have to say a bit maddening, to read prognosticator lists of performances that "may" get nominated and not see Jake’s name included. These are the same people who wrote only months earlier that he gave an awards-worthy performance and should be recognized come Oscar time! He deserved a nomination last year for Open Road's Nightcrawler, and he deserves one this year.

Nice try, Harvey.

Regarding the Nightcrawler tweets: I hadn't read them properly. I get them now. Sorry.

And this: "Nice try, Harvey." 'Southpaw' should not have been released "off season". Why not September / October? It's pretty much forgotten by now, including Jake's awesome performance.

I got my (British) copy of 'Southpaw' yesterday, and watched the movie again. I wish they had put some of the deleted scenes in the movie, particularly the scenes that had more Rachel. That way, her character might have had a bit more impact. Also, the deleted scene(s) with Oona were adorable.

Anonymous said...

" 'Southpaw' should not have been released "off season". Why not September/ October?"

Why not September? Because of Everest. Everybody in the business thought Everest would be a commercial hit.
Why not October? Because of Creed. Releasing Southpaw one month before Warner movie Creed, sequel to hugely popular Rocky = death sentence for SP. Audiences would have saved their money for Creed who by October was overhyped by critics.

Babble fest for some noise in this joint said...

As a comment from the THR H. Masters transcript goes, the "tunnel vision" on BBM fits a cultural need. (Stephen Galloway sure stays on getting his Gotcha quotes.)

Jake has played the "same" role driven by needy sexuality before. The Good Girl. Take away BBM's prestigious package of crew, script, and cast, it's another "soft" young man latching onto a partner and can't let go. In both, he pursues someone as if his first, and last, "Need".

The major difference (not even Jake's indifference toward whether a cougar or another man), is Holden was a headcase. His turmoil ending in death, is the town's cautionary tale. Turmoil in BBM, is reserved for Heath (and the cautionary lesson shifts back to Heath, just as to Jen Aniston.)

Should Jake have held back more ("realize" he needs to "repress" as per Ang Lee's Chinese family dramas, and central to Proulx's social critique), not just bounce off Heath's with a casual "me neither" -- the movie could run 4hours!

Without inner conflict to play, something he ensures now, Jake landed a huge cultural stigma (thankless!): No visible technique/gimmick! Is dude's "overtly gay" ("push story forward" as in Zodiac) by "playing himself"? (Thus the attachment to "Jake", rather than ya-can't-miss Technique: "method" of special jaw movements, squinting eyes, mumbling. "Mask".) But notice this is never asked of his other naturalistic roles of "just re/act spontaneously": Jarhead, Rendition, Brothers, Proof. Well duh: they don't fit a huge, gaping cultural need.

In lieu of the same points ragged on Jake's career, I want to turn them around. Where is that one requisite role of "soft, tender young person pursuing same-sex first love" in EVERY actor's resume? Where are the writers & scripts for "sexy, passionate, crushing, ~forbidden same-sex love affairs" for actors at every age (gender, race, class, nationality, dis/abled): 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s+?

Now, how old is Jake, and what roles are available to him (white male in mid-30s) that land investors and distribution? If he chooses "too many" "un-BBM, un-Jack Twist" roles for certain tastes, what "Twists" out there did he pass up? What roles in Stonewall, Carol, Tangerine, Danish Girl, or Ben Whishaw's gay leads? (He oughta beg McMurty/Ossana to play their version of Joe Bell?)

CBM heroes, boxers, action anti/heroes, drag racing, young adult dystopia get franchises. Some want Jake's early 2000s, emo manchild-repurposed (& re-contextualized) archetype of "overtly gay" desire and longing, to recur like a franchise. Sustainable?

Babble fest for some noise in this joint said...

(pt. 2)
Or, is dude playing age-appropriate stuff, with his own interpretations - yes beyond depriving folks of "eye candy" - on drug runner, upstart with a dream, boxer, yuppie etc? Then, what tends to get made with middle-aged white guys (now valuing self-reflection, serving the roles more than fan-favorite "Jake image"?), in the known movie genres?

If the "buzz" about his career in the next 5 years is still "BBM/Heath" (facepalm at San Bernadino, even for this Bloom-diehard), I hope Jake's at least asked how he'd play Twist differently as an older actor. Or how the "overtly gay" is truly calibrated by era-appropriate hand gestures, eventually lived-in accent, "alluring" gaze and lip movements (think Carol!) Fussy make-up & attire in the tavern scene.

Even more thankless, is Lee's deft "miscast" of the "babyface" image as mustachioed pap with young child. Without lechering over any man at dinner table, the father-in-law persecuted Twist *just as he is*: "miscast" as atypical-looking head of the house (despite his amusing crab-like moving around furniture). What a crucial judgment of hate, Heath/Ennis's method-y ways didn't get. It's subtly effective enough, to train our collective gaze at an actor's "miscast" as inspiring suspicion, rejecting his "faux" authority in inhabiting the American male archetype (family man, one to even tolerate a simple sit-down with no matter how he looks or swaggers too "stiffly".)

BlueJean said...

"Why not September? Because of Everest."

Oops. Yes, of course! ;)

Agree with your comments regarding 'Creed', Anon. I also thought about that, but... any idea what could have improved Jake's awards / Oscar chances then? Seems to me that most of the 'Southpaw' buzz died down pretty quickly anyway. Can we say Jake's performance was simply too good for this movie? I enjoyed it, and I'm sure most of us here did - but all in all 'Southpaw' is considered predictable and mediocre.

Hmmm. Wasn't it Colorado where Peter & Jake were filming those runners who go through mountainous terraine for like 50 hours straight? This was a few years ago? Peter was interested in doing a movie based on Born to Run, Christopher MacDougall's book? Then it was called off Because Christopher and Peter disagreed about something? Maybe it's back on?
Or maybe they're planning a family outing for Christmas at some ski resort? Who knows. Sounds like fun except for the chains and the snow tires. LOL!

I agree there was no "better time" to release Southpaw. I also pretty much agree with Blue Jean on this : "Can we say Jake's performance was simply too good for this movie? I enjoyed it, and I'm sure most of us here did - but all in all 'Southpaw' is considered predictable and mediocre." I think strong acting performances really saved this movie, not just Jake's, but Forest Whitaker, Rachel and Oona. The rest of the cast gave strong performances too.

BlueJean said...

Finally had the time to listen to the podcast. As always, it was a joy to listen to Jake talking about his craft. I also liked that she asked him how he felt about fame and the things that come with it - and how he answered he has a "complicated relationship with it all", and how "uncomfortable" it makes him feel sometimes.

Smallish rant said...

Someone said on Dissolved before it was shut down, that Jake is the type of actor whose career won't be appreciated *in full*, until it is long over. I hated cosigning it but knew she was right. Self-reinvention is hard enough, even more to do it within a collaborative art that's also a business, media circus, and ultimately all about people pleasing (more than painting in a corner, writing for a website, anything with smaller overhead.)

It must be even harder for an actor's mix of perception, style(s) and talents, altogether happen to tick many boxes - the sorts that have the least USE (those "cultural needs" of various, often extremist agendas, again) and regard for his creative process. But regardless of his merits as a "creative artist", he's tried to share his journey of coming into *better* control of his process with the least vanity in the recent talks.

Whether his work has moved, or failed to, people in his lifetime, I can't help feeling there is something special when comparing the scripts of his last few works (End of Watch~Southpaw), with what he actually ended up with. Read and compare the blueprint with his results. It was often generic, abstract, obtuse, parochial, impersonal - and whipped up to much better shape when he's through (albeit within teamwork; but to a fan it's different than if done by someone else:P)

Anyway I just hope he doesn't let the, uhm, absurd amount of Toxic surrounding the mere fact of his existence, throw off his creative fire/process for at least 5 more years.

Scott said...

"Anyway I just hope he doesn't let the, uhm, absurd amount of Toxic surrounding the mere fact of his existence, throw off his creative fire/process for at least 5 more years."

I don't understand the toxic comment about Jake's existence. But I will agree that Jake's work will stand the test of time which I believe is what any great actor wants. Performances in work that can not be rebooted with any old actor.

Scott said...

Oh I forgot, Jake if he wants will be working until he is in his 60's or 70's. It's a lot different for male actors than female actors. I just hope Jake keeps up his trend of working with female actresses who are his age or older. From all the conversation of women and age appropriate male counterparts, this has been missed by so many people including Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Jake continues to choose bold and interesting projects. His desire to direct comes as no surprise since seems to enjoy the overall process of filmmaking.

Harvey W. acts as if Southpaw was so wronged by Hollywood"s "prejudice" against summer films as award contenders, but in truth, he and Miramax, back in the day, began the trend of autumn being "award buzz season." So basically he's complaining about a system he started himself. And he quite simply badly planned Jake's Oscar campaign. Boosting about Southpaw way back in spring at Cannes was just too early; people were bound to both a)forget about it by fall, and b)find such blatant campaigning too much, too soon. I think the entire thing just left a bad taste in people's mouths. And when the movie itself wasn't so astonishing or popular, the movie and Jake's performance just didn't have the buzz to compete this year.

I have to say, Southpaw won't go down for me as one of Jake's great films or performances, so I'm not too torn up about the lack of nods. Did he give it his typical 110%? Yes. But I sorta think all his physical prep was done to overcompensate for the less-than-revelatory script and meh directing--all the method_y prep was done to distract from the fact that the movie wasn't all that great. Jake did a good, not great, job in it. He's done more complex acting in other roles. I don't know--I guess I think he deserves better than a role that thinks guy crying and mumbling are marks of "deep characterization."

After the three in row of Nightcrawler, Southpaw and Everest, I kinda want him to take a break from roles that place such a huge stress on physical prep and transformation. He can find such power in small moments as an actor--quiet vulnerability and subtle humor. All the external work is distracting critics and audiences from his excellent ability to convey the inner-life and emotions of his roles.

Monica said...

He did it in Demolition. Didn't require physical transformation, I think he received more praise for it than for Southpaw.

I saw Southpaw. he is good in it, but, for me, it's not among his best performances. I blame the script, I'm still wondering why he said yes to this script. The story didn't feel credible to me.
I surprised myself enjoying the performance of Rachel and her character. Her story, what she wanted, it was more interesting to me than what happened next. She has a great chemistry with Jake Gyllenhaal.
It was nice to see his Brazilian assistant in one of the scenes.

Piruleta said...

Hi everyone, things has been very quite lately.

Came to say that this is incredible but Southpaw has still no release date for Spain… so I ended renting it on iTunes.

My opinion is the same as everybody else. Jake is really good in it, as is Rachel, Forest and Oona, but when you end the film you can’t help but feel that all of them were too good for the material they had. In my opinion the biggest issue is the script, I can’t see what they thought was so interesting to put so much effort in it. Jake has said a few times that the thing he wanted to explore the most was the relationship between father-daughter, and that really translates into the screen. His scenes with Oona are the best part of the film for sure, at least for me. But other than that, the script is very unoriginal and predictable as has been stated so many times. Then there’s Fuqua, he is a competent director but lacks the talent that can transform a so-so script into a great film (e.g. Prisoners).

In short: I think is an entertaining film but mostly because of the performances. Ignoring that, the film is too generic and forgettable.

As for Weinstein, I totally agree with "Anon 9:04" first paragraph. I read Weinstein statement and while he makes some good points, it’s totally ironic he is the one pointing them out when he’s been, during this past years, almost eating all the possibilities for other films (especially for smaller studios) to compete in the Oscar race. He also complains about Jake’s snub this year when I’m pretty sure he was happy that his contender didn’t have another actor to fight for a place in the final list. I don’t really understand how Bradley Cooper has been able to earn three noms in a row, but in my opinion, Cumberbatch really was the weakest part of that category. But of course Weinstein didn’t had a problem with that, right?

Scott said...

"I kinda want him to take a break from roles that place such a huge stress on physical prep and transformation. "

Jake only had a body transformation in Nightcrawler and Southpaw. His body transformation was made a big deal because the movies were back to back. In Southpaw jake had to look like a boxer so his body had to look that way. Nightcrawler was a gamble for Jake in body transformation and it worked.

I hardly think Jake is the only actor to use body transformation, Eddie Redmanye depended on body quirks and costumes for his last two roles. I don't think Jake has done much body transformation in his roles except when the role has called for it such as Southpaw and Prince of Persia.

Scott said...

And FYI<it is so much easier to imitate an real person than to create an original role and Jake has done that consistently.

BlueJean said...

"His scenes with Oona are the best part of the film for sure, at least for me."

For me too, Piretula! As a matter of fact, the scenes with all three of them (including Rachel) are my faves. I felt the same way about 'Brothers' - the scenes with Natalie Portman and the two little girls are the highlight of the film. Don't know what that says about me, though - would I like to see (movie) Jake as a family man? ;)

Harvey shouldn't have said anything about Jake being snubbed last year. He makes it seem like Jake's desperate for an (important) award and I'm sure it made Jake feel uncomfortable.

"I sorta think all his physical prep was done to overcompensate for the less-than-revelatory script and meh directing--all the method_y prep was done to distract from the fact that the movie wasn't all that great."

Agreed, anon. But would / could Jake ever admit that? Certainly not in public, and probably not even to himself. I can't help but think that Jake saw something in the script that just didn't show in the finished film for whatever reason. It's happened before. LAOD, PoP, Everest, maybe even 'Brothers', athough I love him in that one.

In the end, I think I'm able to see why he chose to do 'Southpaw'. I still wonder about 'Everest'. He was hardly in it... maybe much of the Scott Fischer story in the film got cut? It seemed such a waste of Jake's talent. I was really disappointed.

Here's a totally superficial, silly question to jump-start things--do we think Jake dyes his hair at all? I was just reading an interview with Matt Damon where he talks about how much he hates when the studios make him dye the grey out of his hair, so that's why it popped into my mind.

I know Jake has had the white patch in his beard for years, but there's been a few times where I've thought his hair around the temples and in front looked liked it had a bit of grey in it (esp. at last year's Governor's Awards) and other times at photo-shoots where it's had that "freshly colored"-look to it--very auburn when compared to the rest of his brown hair.

I don't know--I think Jake would quite sexy salt and pepper one day. :) I don't want to age him before his time, but I wonder if he's more grey than we might guess. I recall that comment he made to Jon Stewart on TDS during the "Prisoners" press blitz...

Hi guys,

Just a few questions. Did you know this instagram account MsBCCG ? It seems to be a close friend or more of Jake. She follow him everywhere on the last few months according to her photos (Colorado's holiday, Almafi, Cannes etc). She is married and have two kids (and according to her photos again she pregnant now) but people who comment seems to believe that Jake is the husband and father and she never denied it. And she is in Dubaï right now and she post a very confusing note on instagram
Read this : http://iconosquare.com/p/1139347745834968706_1142357216
And look at this picture : http://iconosquare.com/p/1138948463680202271_1142357216 it's Jake right ?

That's really bizarre. I know Jake is not married or have kids but this really reaaly weird coincidence.

She appears to be affiliated with Bold Films hence the fact that she's popping up around Jake a fair bit. Her husband/partner who is dark haired and likes to rock the facial scruff pops up in some of her Instagram pics.

I think she works with Jake. She was on the set of Nocturnal Animals and in other events in which he was.

No, I think not.

BlueJean said...

No, I don't think so - both the hairdying question and Jake being in a relationship. Or maybe he is in a relationship, but then again, that's none of our business.

just my humble opinion said...

I don't feel comfortable with this woman MsBCCG. I think she's a name dropper and wants to be associated with jake (and other celebrities she mentions) to have fame for herself.

on instagram she's never in an actual picture with jake posing by choice(like for example his publicist Mara or the Bold producer are). she follows some of Jake's friends and family but nobody follows her back or mention her or replies to her.

If she's one of jake's friends/work colleagues then it's tacky that she posts everything about him. none of Jake's real friends post about him and they are most of them on instagram and were on holidays with him too.

Looking at her twitter/ instagram, her real name is Barbara but I don't see any Barbara listed as producer/director in any of the shows she claims to be involved.

I don't think at all that Jake is married to her and/or her kids are his like she's constantly and consciously insinuating.

I just don't have a good feeling about her.

Scott said...

". none of Jake's real friends post about him and they are most of them on instagram and were on holidays with him too."

Yes jake's "real" friends have posted about him and his pics.

"I just don't have a good feeling about her."

She is no different than that guy from Maroon Five or his PR representative who have posted pics and comments about Jake. I don't think she is being opportunistic regarding Jake. Its not her fault that some people mistake her husband for Jake or have a wild imagination. How that is possible from one head shot with the face away from the camera with the person wearing a cap and sunglasses? Jake is not the only guy with a beard that wears sunglasses and hats. Besides Jake beard must have grown really fast to have that much growth.

But at least Jake fans are not Cumberbatch fans.

Anonymous said...

"I don't think at all that Jake is married to her and/or her kids are his like she's constantly and consciously insinuating."

That's my feeling too. She surnamme her little boy "the Prince of Persia", her post about "the next week birthday" of her soul mate. Ok Jake is not the only guy with a beard but it's a very weird coincidence. And just after an article mention Jake at a restaurant in San Francisco she post that she was at the same restaurant with her "baby love"...

Its not her fault that some people mistake her husband but she never denied it. She seems to like it and brags about it. She even post a picture of two girl, one blonde and one brunette and said "that's me and Greta in Amalfi" except it's not Greta. And recently she post colorado picture after Jake sighting in Walfart...

Of course she seems to be in his entourage because she was in his film premiere and accompagny him professionaly to tv show but she maybe that close that she wants to people believe.

Just my opinion too and thanks you for yours answers guys.

I respect Jake privacy and of course i will be happy to see him in a relationship. I don't talk about it anymore I just want to have your opinion. If that cause trouble you can deleted it.

Thanks...

L.

I could be wrong, but the guy in that picture appears to be a "Lefty" isn't Jake right handed? Something minor but just an observation.

Encouraging news about 'Stronger': Apparently the script is very good. It's #2 on the current 'Black List'.

Variety: Black List 2015
#2 STRONGER by John Pollono – 40 [votes]
The true story of Jeff Bauman, who after losing his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, was an integral part of helping police to locate the suspects.

According to 'My Entertainment World' the shooting of 'Stronger' will start in Boston in March. 'Okja' is scheduled for April, 2016 (The film is about a rural girl from Korea’s Gang-won Province who travels between Korea and the US. Locations will be New York and Korea).

Two days to go until Jake will appear at the Dubai International Film Festival’s ‘In Conversation’ event.

Wow tight shooting there in March, considering Jake will be meeting me in March in Austin, TX. LOL, I hope he has his priorities in order. Encouraging about the script though, lets just hope the script isn't messed with too much.

De-lurking for two quick things:

1. The woman with the Instagram in question (who I'm guessing is a publicist of some sort) posts all the time about her husband, Arturo, so how anyone could get confused and think Jake was her man/baby daddy, is beyond me. She even links to his Instagram account often.

2. As a hairdresser for 15 years, I can say without a doubt that Jake tints his hair. It looks to be a demipermanent dye, which is more subtle and camouflages grey for about 6 weeks. It's preferable because it does't need the strict upkeep of permanent dye, and doesn't leave that telltale demarcation line/root as it grows out. It simply covers the grey temporarily, then fades away, getting lighter and lighter. Basically, it just blends gray with the rest of the hair. So grey strands that have been treated it dark brown become more golden after each wash. It's a nice way to add dimension to hair and not look too heavy or inky.

I previously thought it was just around his part and temples, but looking at more recent pictures, I think he gets it all over, with perhaps a heavier concentration on his sides. It's done very well and subtly, tho I do think his hairdresser has put more warmth in it this year compared to last. Compare his haircolor from "Constellations" to what it was during "Everest" and "Southpaw" press. Just a bit more of a copper/red undertone to it.

I assume it's similar to the temporary dye solution they brush through his beard. That white patch is always so well covered up; I'm impressed. (Interestingly enough, I read an article where Maggie said she has a white spot of hair, too, so must be genetic.) "Everest" is about as close to his natural beard color as we've seen--bit of gray in it; a little lighter. So many things can make beard hair lighter--from food to drink to hard or soft water. Toothpaste and mouthwash tend to bleach out. So that he always has a fairly consistent color to it means someone is really on the ball of its upkeep. ;) Could even be him--having a beard on and off for as many years as he has, I'm sure he knows how to trim and groom it well on his own. ;)

I don't think he's mostly grey by any means, but it must be enough that if left untreated that it would be noticeable on camera in tight shots. And it could be a personal thing, too, for him. Maybe he's just not ready to go "au naturale" yet. It's not a vanity matter--I have plenty of clients. men and woman, who opt to do it for professional reasons or because it feels more "them" to dye vs. not dye. And he has such thick, coarse hair--dye of any kind helps to smooth the hair cuticle, making it look shinier and smoother. So that's a plus, too.

Amazing how, at this moment, comments on Jake's hair and his private life generate more discussion than his professional stuff ;)

Look, I know there's not much news right now and I won't say I'm completely un-interested in Jake's love life ( *grins* )- but I don't feel comfortable with discussing his private life here (or anywhere else for that matter). All this speculation... does it matter? His private life is his own. Let's face it: we don't know anything, guys.

I did find Jess's hair post strangely intriguing, though ;) Yes, where did that white patch in his beard go? :)

Anonymous said...

I understand you BJ but it's not really his private life it's just a discussion about someone who supposed to be in his entourage ;)

Yeah i prefer too talk about his work and I'm very impatient for Demolition. I don't really like Southpaw yes of course Jake is amazing in it but the film is very tacky.

"I understand you BJ but it's not really his private life"

It did seem like that to me, L, but okay. I just think there's no need for us to add to all the gossip that's already online. We may all wonder about what's "going on", but none of us will ever know for sure unless Jake decides to tell us - which he won't. And it seems to me that the people who work with him are also aware of how private he is and won't post all too personal pictures. My opinion, of course.

I'm very impatient for 'Demolition' too! :)

I agree with you BJ.
I bring that subject because I found this instagram and I said too myself WTF ? I just come here because I read the blog everyday just to have your opinion about that. But it's no big deal now we can go to another subject...a more professional one lol...or we can talk about his hair that fun too lol

I happen to have a very strong opinion on people's privacy. And especially for celebrities. Imagine what it's like to be followed, talked about and photographed all the time. Sure, it sort of comes with the job, but there's a limit to what I want to read or see about one's private life - and that includes some social media.

I'm actually glad that Jake's doesn't do Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Imagine what would happen if he'd start...

Ann said...

My thoughts exactly BlueJean. I searched this woman's name on twitter, there are a handful of people asking her if she's dating Jake and tagging her in pics they think are her with Jake. And I saw some of the comments on her instagram pics, I'm not surprised she made everything private. Some fans don't respect boundaries on the internet. It made me think of what Jake would deal with if he was on social media, I'm glad he's not.

How much longer until Demolition is released ;)

Scott said...

"That woman MsBCCG, has now changed her Instagram to private. Wonder if his people read this blog? Lol"

Some of the obsession with Jake's personal life is envy of others. She probably made her page private because of verbal attacks by so called Jake fans who can't comprehend that Jake has friends that are not them. I don't think she disrespected Jake's privacy at all. Some need to get over the fact that Jake is not their personal property.

I think some people will need heavy medication when Jake does finally get married.

"Some of the obsession with Jake's personal life is envy of others."

Envy? I'll never understand why. C'mon, from the outside it seems he leads a glamarous life 99% of us can only dream of (fame, traveling the world, fancy parties etc.), but at the same time I think fame can be like a prison. Jake's hardly able to go anywhere without people noticing, especially in this day and age where everyone has a camera on their phone.

If he ever gets married - good luck to his girl, cos it will be the same for her as well. I hope he'll find someone who's able to cope with that - and basically someone who loves him for him and not his fame.

Does anyone think Nocturnal Animals will be going to the Cannes Film Festival to build early buzz? I know it gold sold to Focus/Universal over there last year so it would be awesome if the main cast was over there and it got goo reviews to push it for an Oscar campaign.

Anonymous said...

"Does anyone think Nocturnal Animals will be going to the Cannes Film Festival to build early buzz?"

That can be great. But Cannes is difficult the film must be solid or else it can get bad buzz. I confident because Amy Adams and Jake but Tom Ford even if 'A Single Man' was good stay a debutante. But yeah that can be good for the film. I don't read the book and I don't until I see the movie.

There's a photo of Jake's driver's sign: Jake, Mara Buxbaum and Bryan Ling.

I don't know about Cannes. I would love to see Jake there again, with a film premiere this time. But then it's such a long wait until Awards Season, which one assumes/hopes NA will be part of.

Other films have premiered at Cannes and have sustained buzz until awards season, especially when they have Fall release date which Nocturnal Animals has. Will all depend on the reviews and then the awards campaign.

I think he may lighten it or darken it for a movie role, but I believe it is most of the time his natural color. I also think the sun has a lot to do with whether it looks redder or browner. If he is outside in the sun a lot it lightens his hair a bit brings out the reddish highlights. That's just my opinion. Also the lighting. Depending on the way the light hits him also makes his hair looks lighter or darker.

This I agree with, 100%.

As for NA I'm glad to read that Anon, there were some things I didn't like about the book, hopefully Tom Ford has made some changes.

Her pictures are really (intentionally?) misleading, right? I've been reading some of the comments made on her IG and she doesn't dispel them - if anything, she seems to enjoy the ambiguity. She was also at the Cartel Land event. Does anyone know her name?

Hope everyone is having a lovely lead up to Xmas! My oven decided to pack in yesterday!

Stephanie has just posted new pics of him with Greta. I like them together. She was with him in Telluride a few weeks ago. I'd love it if things turned romantic between them :)

msbccg keeps locking and unlocking her acct i think she likes the attention.

sassy said...

Definitely agree with you. When someone tagged her in the photos of Jake on a date with and kissing a blonde woman, she didn't dispel that either. Bit disrespectful to her husband imo. Speaking of, I don't understand why her IG commenters believe they're romantically involved. In her bio it states she's married with children. Last time I checked, he isn't married or have children.

That msbccg woman stole that Jake photo from the Cartel Land event. You can see the original picture here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/_iQtQwlU5X/

I don't believe she was actually there. I wouldn't be surprised if all the photos she's posted were stolen from someone else. I think she's just messing with Jake's fans and is enjoying the attention she's getting by pretending to know him.

Anonymous said...

Very odd. And if you're a producer, would you not name yourself for business purposes?

I think she does somehow work with Jake and it's legit, but it's just a really strange set up.

It's like a little game she's playing (and I'm sad enough to be intrigued!!) - posting pictures from Jake's favourite restaurants and coffee shops...never denying anything...

I mean, good for her I guess. I just don't find it very professional.

Gary Michael Walters has now also gone private on IG, but he was quite upfront about working with Jake. Did anyone else find him a bit...sleazy? Some of those girls looked very young.

God, I need a life. Maybe in 2016!

Can we talk about something else please, guys? I'm not in the least bit interested in that woman, who she is and her relation to Jake. So many people are friends with him or working with him - we don't have to know about each and every one of them, do we?

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone. I've got my mulled wine on the stove and off to the cinema this evening to watch Die Hard with my best friend.

Hope everyone who celebrates has a very Merry Christmas! And for all Of us, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I wish you peace and a beautiful weekend with loved ones!

My daughters are here and we will be spending time with family as well as catching up on potential Oscar movies. So far we have seen Brooklyn & The Big Short together. Steve Jobs is no longer showing, but Macbeth is, and it is my favorite Shakespeare play. I really enjoy Fassbender and I love Marion Cotillard so I'm twisting some arms today to see if we can catch an afternoon performance before heading over to a family gathering!

I think it's very odd what she's doing. Part of me still think it's a very good fake.

Nevertheless, she's obviously an attention seeker who's enjoying this...let's not feed the fire!

So I think I've mentioned in an older post about an old cinema in central London (the Prince Charles) that shows pretty much everything from old to current. I went there last week to see Die Hard. Anyways, downstairs there's a chalkboard where people can write what films they want for the future. Felt pretty proud that amongst all the 'Jurassic Parks' and 'Lord of the Rings' there were 5 Jake movies! He has some well-liked films.

I added Jarhead because I've only seen it on DVD.

BlueJean said...

I'd LOVE to see Brokeback on the big screen. I only first saw it in 2012, on DVD. Brokeback brought me to this blog, basically :)

I've only seen Jake's recent ones at the cinema (since Prisoners). Everything else has been DVD only for me :( And London! The Brits seem to love Jake, so I'm not surprised there are so many requests for his films.

bobbyanna said...

I realized after seeing Jarhead & BM on the big screen, that I had also seen TDAT and October Sky on the big screen, but I'd forgotten about Jake. (!!!) I was re-introduced with those two movies in 2005. I can't believe it's been ten years since their release.

Hope everyone is having a fun relaxing holiday.

For those of us who still believe in Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and other assorted miracles, I saw this on Lainey's blog today:

"...Oscar nomination voting begins tomorrow and runs until January 8th. "

If Jake didn't like Alyssa Miller alluding to their life together on Twitter and Instagram, no way he's cool with whatever this is all about with MsBCCG.

I truly think she's a "talented" faker. I mean, really, if you're a legit producer/director you're going to link to your IMDb page or production company, not your barely updated, half-ass Tumblr page. And you're certainly not going to retweet fan art and gossip on your timeline on your client. (Or randomly tweet their sister/brother-in-law with things about Donnie Darko. WTF?) She's desperate for attention. Look at her tweet with VoxCinema before Dubai--I don't think she has any power to make invites or plans on behalf of him, and that's why she backpedaled so quickly out of it.

I'm tempted to think her entire "bio" is fake--what happened to the pics of her "husband" she used to have up? All mysteriously deleted now. And her pregnancy seems to come up, then fade away... I honestly think she just steals from other sources for her pics and videos. Or else, publicists are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. She might be a lackey or assistant to his actual team, and just conflates it to seem like they're BFFs. If she works for Bold Films, I feel sorry for Jake. Everyone there, including that Gary Michael Walters, seem like professional namedroppers. ;)

Compare BCCG's timeline to Jake's legit publicist, Mara Buxbaum. She is professional, discreet, and only alludes to her clients in relation to their projects, not their private lives.

I know this topic is to be dead and buried, but she makes such an association of herself with him on social media, it is a legit topic. If he chooses not to have a verified media presence online, then he needs to be careful and make sure anyone associated with his "team"-even tangentially--isn't taking advantage of that absence and creating their own narrative.

To steer things back to a more productive topic, and linking it with his Bold Films deal: I wish he'd find a way to revive the "Ezekiel Moss" project he was supposed to do with Amy Adams before Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away. Every time "The Black List" of scripts comes out, I recall how excellent that script was and what an intriguing role that would have been for Jake...

Scott said...

So what she posted fake pics and bios. There are fake Jake twitter accounts in which people actually think it's Jake and one guy flirts with women all the time pretending to be Jake. And women believe him, it's hilarious.

Yes Jake is private and he has in the past taken legal action when needed, I have faith that if he feels someone is stepping over the line he would take action. This is the only place that talks about that lady's account though.

Happy Gyllenhaal Year in 2016 and for everyone else.

bobbyanna said...

On the Oscar nominations, the only "sure" nominees I can see are Leo for Revenant, Fassbender for Steve Jobs, and Eddie Redmayne for Danish Girl. I see some consensus building around them. So IMO there are two possible spots still up for grabs. Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, Will Smith for Concussion, Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Michael Caine for Youth, and Matt Damon for The Martian, are part of the conversation, but it's hard for me to speculate which ones might dill out the rest of the short list. It will be interesting to see what the voters come up with.

( I still believe in Santa! LOL! )

I don't understand the hate MsBCCG is receiving. I don't see anything wrong with her posts. BTW Peter Sarsgaard is following her on twitter.

Stallone deserves at least a nomination for Creed. He's great in the film.

Scott said...

Its nice that Paul Dano is getting major buzz for supporting, he is way under appreciated.

It would be nice if non bio performances in the actor category would get in, I am ok with Damon and Caine getting the noms. Damon is another actor is woefully under appreciated.

Anonymous said...

i don't see anyone being hateful towards her, at least not here. but she is constantly tweeting or tagging jake in things so she is looking for the attention from his name. greta caruso never mentions jake on her instagram, except once to promote southpaw. this woman is constantly doing that. if you tag jake's name on social media, it's going to draw attention. one would think after fans starting commenting that they are married she'd stop doing it but she's not, so she wants people to think something is going on with them. it's just very strange and i don't see the problem with people discussing it.

Scott said...

Why does it matter? She is not hurting anyone and apparently Jake may know her, its not her fault if people are assuming things and that other people are jealous. Why not ask her directly on social media and just call her out if you feel she is bogus?

Monica said...

Well, people are saying she's lying, faking photos and she is desperate for attention. It's a level of hate for me.

If Jake didn't like Alyssa Miller alluding to their life together on Twitter and Instagram
Alyssa posted something personal, a gift he gave to her on Valentine's Day, it was posted across the internet, so it was no surprise that he was upset.

MsBCCG is posting professional things about Jake, him in Dubai, giving interviews to The Wrap, everest, Southpaw, etc. I thought she was a new his assistant. Good to know that she works for Bold Films.

I very disappointed that Sicario wasn't in many Oscars's discussions.
For me, with Mad Max, it's the best film of the year. Of course I didn't see all movies but I very love Sicario. And I'm also sad that Emily Blunt wasn't not nominated for Best Actress.

I believe of miracle but I pretty sure Jake will not get a nomination. Too bad but maybe next year.

Oh and if Msbccg's goal is attention apparently she wins. I don't even believe she knows Jake now but it's really important ?

L.

bobbyanna said...

I guess I don't care one way or another. I use to have strong opinions about who he dated, and I used to get all upset about people creating elaborate scams, or what ever, even if not a scam, but I honestly don't care about it anymore. It's wonderfully freeing.

Jake has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't listen to my advice and suggestions of who to date or what movies to make...or not make! He nevertakes my calls!LOLOL! He also made it clear, joking aside, that he really doesn't want his personal life to be tabloid material. Thank goodness for Instagram and twitter, etc. LOL! We get a peep now and then of what he's up to and that's fun, but it's nothing for me to be concerned about.

My opinion of this girl is that she MIGHT have some loose connection and uses it to hype herselkf. Jake is a young, likeable, great looking, single guy. I'm sure he manages to keep busy with a pretty active social ife. Tell you what. It won't surprise me one bit if one day in the future we discover Jake got married and is expecting a kid. Surprise! I think that's how it will go with him. The public will know nothing until he decides.

Thanks so much, UV. And I totally agree with Bobbyanna here: "I honestly don't care about it anymore."

Jake's personal life is none of our business. It's bad enough his brief "romance" with Taylor Swift is (still) mentioned over and over whenever she's releasing new stuff and the press is in desperate need of gossip, but other than that... I'm so, so glad there aren't any scandals surrounding Jake's personal life. All we know is what we read and no-one knows how accurate that is. And yes, like Bobbyanna, I too think that marrying quietly is the way for him to do it! Go Jake! ;)

Here's to a wonderful, busy, EPIC Jake year in 2016. I have high hopes for 'Demolition', so I'm really looking forward to that - and that Oscar will come in 2017, I'm sure of it! ;)

Have a great celebration of the New Year, everyone! And stay safe!
