In dreams

In a new article, Jake Gyllenhaal describes the dreams and nightmares, asleep and waking, that haunted and helped him in making End of Watch:

My dreams are often very intense. After waking up, it's mostly just individual images left behind, and above all, moods and feelings. Sometimes they are so strong that they accompany me for hours through the day. Particularly intense dreams provide a link between our consciousness and our unconscious. They illuminate who we are, and make us think about ourselves, which is not always pleasant. Successful movies, in my opinion, do the the same thing.

The police action took place mostly at a time when I am usually sleeping. It was a unique, dreamlike atmosphere to drive in the early morning hours through the city, where so many people were sleeping peacefully. I was with police who had to be wide awake and had to deal with all the nightmares that came crawling out of the shadows. Inside the patrol car, I felt like I was in an enclosed space, like a protective bubble, safe and secure, as in a dream. Leaving the patrol car to confront the threatening reality each time was a kind of awakening. A strange feeling.

When I came home in the morning, after the end of the shift, I often couldn't sleep. When I eventually managed to fall asleep, those images haunted me in my dreams. That was a kind of catharsis. The dreams helped me cope with the experience. All these nightmares, real and in sleep, cast a new light on my own life, which I've learned to re-appreciate and enjoy.

Will Smith is definitely the king of the rankings, but it is at least 3 years that he does not make a movie, even Matt Damon, does not shine perticularly without Bourne, other hand, someone like Bale is not perceived to be at the top of the list and he's Batman

I love the picture of him with his eyes closed. So cute!

FP, you can post the link to the list, please.

Thanks FP, that was really very nice. You make my day. :-)

Monica it seems that the Ulmer Scale is not updated is a list of 100 names but it stops at 2010, and at the top is Will Smith

Certain themes repeat again and again in my dreams, last year it was mainly violence and death in many ways. I dreamed that people close to me died or I was murdered myself. In a dream, I even became a murderer.

That's quite a bit darker than his usual statements.

FP said...

Jake honey you were not dreaming you were shooting a video for The Shoes;)

FP, LOLOL!

Damn, UV! This has to be one of the strangest articles about Jake I've ever read.

UltraViolet said...

I love the old RRT photo, too. Such a fun, happy time for Jake. In marked contrast to the article's musings.

Hagen, it is darker than his usual statements. I remember an article where Jake talked about coming home and not being able to sleep and watching the sun come up. I'll have to see if I can find it. It conveyed similar feelings, but not quite as dark.

I should probably just put the whole translation in the post. It's an interesting article.

Monica, is this the review you referred to? His description of Tobey is exactly my impression from the scenes I've watched.

FP said...

Is Tobey that bad in TGG?
He is usually a good actor. What went wrong?

Sour grapes said...

"Is Tobey that bad in TGG?"

No I don't think he is that bad, it's one review and as one of the ocmments on the site pointed out, the narration in the movie shouldn't overshadow the performances in the movie. Nick is a boring character who lives through other people, so it sounds to be as if Tobey got it right.

FP said...

Everything that I've read so far on GG does not bode well, it looks like a mess, it has a great director and a great cast, but the first comments are lukewarm if not negative, and the reviews are very few. I do not understand why all these secrets about the movie?

UltraViolet said...

LOL, Sour Grapes. Nice try.

Nick Carraway is not a boring character. And his narration is supposed to lead the reader/viewer through the story, not bore them.

Who knows if Tobey got it right? No one here, including you, has seen the movie.

Monica said...

Was this review that I read, UV.

FP, the film will open Cannes next week, which is when the embargo ends.

from face:

Nothing like a little self care and pampering at Aire ancients baths today sharing one with Jake Gyllenhaal, it's one to see a celebrity and another to be in a bath with one!

FP said...

Lucky girl!:)

Sour grapes said...

"so it sounds to be as if Tobey got it right. "

That comment above does not suggest that I saw the movie, I said it sounds as IF it got it right.

It amazes me how Jake fans on this board want to see other actors and their movies fail because you felt the part should have gone to Jake or that Jake has been slighted. It just shows how little faith you all have in Jake's acting abilities.

And UV dedicating a blog to Jake does not make you an expert on who is right for part or not including Jake.

FP said...

Sorry Sour Grapes but If the character of Tobey is so important to the story, the fact that it is perceived boring is not at all a good thing. He is the narrator right? like Proust in search of lost time is your train of thought, the eyes through which view events narrated, if it is boring he failed completely

UltraViolet said...

Oh, Sour, it's been a while. I'd say it's good to see you again, but it actually isn't. It never is.

FP said...

I do not want other actors fail, and I really have faith in the talent of Jake, even when almost no one had more, I have always believed, and the people here the same, never to offend anyone, or wish harm to anyone. The people here are so polite not to make stupid jokes about Reese drunk, and always have a thought for Heath, but even if between us we can't be a little selfish and hope that Jake has the role of life, and joking, or criticize other movies in honest, what are we doing here?

Mary said...

Nicely said FP.

bobbyanna said...

Well said, FP!

Of course we want good things for Jake, but not at someone else's expense. It's not necessary to put someone else down in order to elevate Jake.

But we can express an opinion on the quality of someone's work. For instance, Bradley Cooper optioned the biography of the sniper, and has been trying to get the movie made. So for him to land Spielberg was huge.

It's a completely normal reaction to wish Jake had the same good fortune, without begrudging Bradley.

Altho, I do resent it when the media constantly tries to shove someone in our faces. Jake works at a different pace and makes different choices.

FP said...

the fact, that led us to make the comparison is that Jake did the audio book, and for an actor of his talent to accept a surrogate of the film, does that mean he'd really wanted to have that role, and I'm sorry for him and for us it did not happen, Jake will have another hundred, a thousand, opportunities to showcase his talent, but seeing as it has been hailed his performance, it is natural to wonder how it would be in the movie.

Anonymous said...

Jake's audio book has nothing to do with whether he was ever interested in, or offered a part in the movie. They are separate.

Audible took advantage of the hoopla from the movie to get their book out. Good timing.

I hope people don't think he was "forced" to accept a lesser role because he was denied the role Tobey was cast in. That is just not true.

FP said...

nobody thinks that Jake was forced to do something, but to say that the audio book has nothing to do with the movie or Jake or any other actor of his generation and his talent did not want that role in the movie this is not true.

Chica said...

That is a rather datk interview but interesting, thanks for finding it UV

I don't think that anyone with half a brain thinks that Jake recording the GG wss some kind of consulation prize.

The New York Post:

"Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire celebrated the premiere of “The Great Gatsby” in Gatsby-esque fashion at The Darby after the VIP screening at Lincoln Center and the after-party at the Plaza Hotel on Wednesday night. The pair hosted “Gatsby” director Baz Luhrmann, Jay-Z, Maguire’s wife, Jennifer Meyer, Carey Mulligan, Jamie Foxx, Amanda Seyfried, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anja Rubik, Coco Rocha, Lil Jon, Gayle King and Rohan Marley at the West 14th street restaurant. Guests were entertained by a 1920’s-inspired performance by Dandy Wellington and the Darby Band. “It was like New York’s version of the Globes with A-listers everywhere — at one table Leo, Tobey, Jen, Tom Hardy and Baz; another with Jay-Z, Florence Welch and Jake; and another with Jamie, Lil Jon, and Rohan,” said a guest at the uber-exclusive affair. Once Wellington’s performance ended, DJ Sal Morale spun tunes while Voli cocktails were served up. We’re told Welch got excited when her song “Over the Love,” which is featured on the “Gatsby” soundtrack, came on. “She jumped on a banquette and started dancing,” a witness relates. The party then moved to 1OAK, where spies told us Leo, Jay and Jake took over the VIP section of the club until 4 a.m. "

Anonymous said...

FP, the audiobook ISN'T a surrogate, is part of the Great Gatsby trend but a separate thing done by other producers, nothing to do with the movie making. We'd like Jake to be in the movie as Nick, more now after hearing him narrate it so well. But maybe Tobey was the only casting choice after Leo decided to play Gatsby. Leo and Tobey are friends since adolescence. What you're saying is like saying Anne Hathaway recorded the Wizard of Oz audiobook as a surrogate because she wanted to be in the movie and didn't get the role.

Hagen said...

FP, the audiobook ISN'T a surrogate, is part of the Great Gatsby trend but a separate thing done by other producers, nothing to do with the movie making

I think, FP makes a valid point. It's rather unlikely that Jake readily agreed to narrate "The Great Gatsby" for an audiobook, but wasn't interested to play Nick Carraway in the movie.

linda said...

Jake's alignment with Leo and Jay-Z is a little disturbing to me. I perceive Leo and Jay-Z as representative of a decadent, self-indulgent, f*** everyone lifestyle.

Rachel said...

^^ Based on what? The fact that both of them give back in the form of charitable organizations they're involved with?

bobbyanna said...

I think whether Jake was ever interested in playing Nick Carraway in a movie isn't relevant. I'm sure there are a lot of actors who would love to try Gatsby or Carraway. The fact that Jake was invited to do the book was a wonderful counterpoint to the film, IMO.

Baz Luhrman has been wanting to work with Leo, had a relationship with Leo ever since he cast him in his Alexander the Great project. Oliver Stone and Baz were in a race to see who would go into production first.

Leo, as it has been pointed out, has been a life long friend of Tobey's and there was never any question of anyone other than Tobey being cast in this movie. (I'm surprised Lucas Haas and Kevin Connolly weren't in the movie : ) )

I really don't think that at the time this Gatsby was being put together, and it has taken years to put it together, Jake was ever even a factor. Timing is everything.

As for Jake "aligning himself" with Jay Z & Leo? That is unworthy of a comment. Jake has a lot of friends and we don't get to pick any of them, but I strongly disagree with you on this.

Monica said...

Wow Jake and Tom Hardy in the same party!! I wonder if Joel Edgerton was there.

I want pictures!

Anonymous said...

Hagen, in the logic you use for Jake's audiobook, are you saying that Anne Hathaway did Wizard of Oz audiobook because she wanted to play Dorothy in the movie but she wasn't cast?

Baz and Leo said...

Baz Luhrman directed Romeo+Juliet with Leo DiCaprio and Clare Danes in 1996 when Leo was 22.

bobbyanna said...

OMG, thanks. How could I have forgotten about Romeo & Juliet! I loved that version!

mermon said...

I may be wrong, but IMO Jake as Nick Caraway would attract too much attention than he should, he's just too unique, too handsome to be in Leo's/Gatsby's shadow. Of course, he would play Nick excellently, but the focus could be more on him than on Gatsby. :)

UltraViolet said...

Hi Mermon! I like the way you think :)

Anon 10:37, you do know that The Wizard of Oz movie was made before Anne Hathaway was born, right?

I don't think anyone is saying Jake was turned down for the part and then offered the book as a consolation prize. As Bobbyanna said, I don't think there was ever any doubt that Tobey would be Nick to Leo's Gatsby.

It feels like a consolation prize because this is such a big movie and there's so much hype, and Jake is involved in this minor aspect of it, not the main event.

I'm surprised, given the close association people have between him and Tobey, that Jake agreed to do it.

And Linda, I think you need to get out more.

UltraViolet said...

And yes, I realize I'm the one who first used the term "consolation prize" with regard to Jake and the book/movie. I did not mean it literally.

Lara said...

..."Leo, as it has been pointed out, has been a life long friend of Tobey's "

They have been friends for nearly 25 years, Tobey and Leo, first met in 1990 during the casting for Parenthood, a one-season TV spin-off series. At the time, DiCaprio landed the lead teen role, while Maguire was handed only a couple of lines. They became very good friends. So Three years later, both worked together in This Boy's Life, with Robert De Niro.

New York Daily News: Just before midnight, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Baz Luhrmann, Jay-Z, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Meyer dropped by 14th St.’s dapper Darby supper club. Not yet ready to call it a night, DiCaprio, Gyllenhaal and Jay then headed to nearby 1Oak with Lil Jon, Rohan Marley and Too Short in tow around 3 a.m. That’s what we call a night out.

Wall Street Journal-India: Jake Gyllenhaal turned down an oyster too, and returned to a conversation with the actress Mamie Gummer.

Socialite Life: The glamour of The Great Gatsby was brought to life as the stars, producers and nearly 700 guests straight out of Gatsby’s mansion, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Macguire, Isla Fisher, Jake Gyllenhaal and director Baz Luhrmann all partied with Moët & Chandon at the after party for the NY premiere of the film.
Gatsby co-stars Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal arrived together shortly after Leo, along with Carey’s husband, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons.
Isla Fisher stayed close to hubby Sasha Baron Cohen, while Tobey Macguire and Jake Gylenhaal held court at their own table.

ABC News: According to a partygoer, Leonardo DiCaprio arrived first, followed by Jake Gyllenhaal, who came with Mumford and Sons musician Marcus Mumford. (Mumford’s wife, actress Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy Buchanan in the film, was also there, as was her co-star Isla Fisher, who stayed close to husband Sasha Baron Cohen all night.) Later, Gyllenhaal joined Tobey Maguire at his table, and while DiCaprio stayed put at his table for most of the evening, he jumped up when his friend Jay-Z arrived shortly after midnight.
After the soiree ended, many of the stars headed to an after-after-party with at the Darby restaurant in downtown Manhattan, where they were joined by Amanda Seyfried, Jamie Foxx, Tom Hardy, Anja Rubik, Coco Rocha and Gayle King. When the show came to an end, guests danced to music spun by DJ Sal Morale and then DiCaprio, Jay-Z and Gyllenhaal moved to nearby 1 OAK, where they commanded the VIP section before heading home after 4:00 a.m.

I guess Jake's famous friends week continued last night:

I learned three things tonight: 1. Neta is best sushi I've had in the city to date, 2. Jake is just like every other crass American after a few glasses of sake, and even a Gerard Butler lookalike in a Hawaiian shirt will "skip around the room" when Sasha Baron Cohen demands it. #greatnight

I will say, I was star struck for the first time in a long time last night, even after meeting some of the chilliest and biggest names in music/film in my past. Says something that it was Sasha Baron Cohen and Isla Fischer and Jake Gyllenhaal. Totally fun table to have next to you while eating sooosh.

Vanity Fair: “Don’t cry when you lose!” a playful America Ferrera shouted to fellow nominee Jake Gyllenhaal moments before taking her seat at the 28th Lucille Lortel Awards on Sunday evening. Celebrating the best of off Broadway during the past season, the ceremony was held in the heart of Greenwich Village, at New York University’s Skirball Center.
...
The evening started out on a sweet note as Gyllenhaal presented the award for Outstanding Featured Actress. “Some of you guys gotta get better friends,” he joked, after a lackluster round of applause for the nominees trickled throughout the auditorium. “I speak for myself, too,” he added with a sheepish grin. The winner was his If There Is I Haven’t Found it Yet co-star, Annie Funke. Gyllenhaal could barely contain his excitement for his young co-star, giddily running half way across stage to embrace her as she walked up to claim her award.

It seems to be Zoe Kazan (never heard of her before).

LOL! Relax, FP.

That's Zoe Kazan. She is pictured with Mamie Gummer and Eddie Redmayne at the Gala. Jake is talking to her at the afterparty.

Yeah, I knew that wasn't Kristen Schaal, either. Though I'd love to see Jake chatting with her!

Also loved the Vanity Fair story about the Lortel Awards. I'd love to see Jake's giddiness at Annie's triumph. And LOL at America - that sounds like something Orozco would say to Taylor in EoW!

Hagen, she's dating Paul Dano who worked with Jake in Prisoners. She's does a lot of theatre work as well as movies & TV. Graduated from Yale, lives in BK.

Thanks for the clarification I was justgoing by what it said in the eye candy section of IHJ never heard of either one of them.

Oh, I know, Mary. Wasn't casting stones :) It just made me laugh.

Hagen said...

Ah OK, thanks for clarifying, bobbyanna. Jake seems to be really nice to work with. I mean he stays in contact with quite a few of his actor colleagues (and their partners) from previous movies.
