New York Post: Steve Guttenberg announces he bought two books. “One’s about the late Blackie Schwamb, 6-foot-5, LA’s 1940s semi-pro pitcher. Schwamb met baseball fan Mickey Cohen, who played daytime but nighttime became a gangster who broke legs and ended up one of the greatest players to go to prison. I want Jake Gyllenhaal or Ashton Kutcher for the role.

“The other’s ‘Autochromatic,’ a tragedy/comedy by a 20-year-old second year Vassar girl. I’m producing both films.

Scott said...

well let's see Jake is not 6'5 but he's not Persian either...lol.

I don't think Ashton is 6'5 either but I like the way Steve is thinking.

Mary said...

FP why has that been bothering you?

UltraViolet said...

Mary, that was the tweeter who said it was bothering him. Unclear what exactly he meant.

Slow news day. Hope we hear something from the Prisoners screening later.

Not sure what that Steve Guttenberg movie would be like. His producer track record isn't stellar, but who knows.

What was surprising about it was that people were so nonchalant about seeing him and here I was shivering trying to get a good picture!

I regret not asking him if I could take a picture because if he was humble enough to ride the subway he probably would have said yes!

And that´s it, why she was "bothering",because she did not ask to take a photo.

Scott, that was mean :)

Here's the link about the Prisoners screening tonight. I see now that it didn't post properly. It was at 7:00 tonight. I haven't seen any tweets about it yet.

A small review about Prisoners from a poster on IMDB,

I'll speak in general non-spoiler terms (which won't violate the terms, plus my user id isn't registered to my real email or name): I thought the movie was good-performance wise-excellent, excellent performances all around definitely the movie's strong suit... the central "theme" of the movie I thought they did great. That's it.

Extra said...

I can't believe that they are screening Prisoners so ear, not that iim complaining! Thanks Anon., sounds positive.

The Ant Man "rumors" reminds mr of the rumors of Jske and Captain Marvel , blech.

UltraViolet said...

Man, those spambots will not die. I can't figure out why there is such an increase in them lately. But I hate to go to the captcha system.

Anyone an Awards Daily participant? Someone apparently went to the Prisoners screening and is decidedly unhelpful and not very enthusiastic. In the Best Actor forum:

So, I just saw a test screening for Prisoners. Not that he's bad, but I think it's quite safe to say you can cross Hugh off this list.

(from a Jake fan): Um, AND...?

Well, it's one of those stupid "can't talk about the movie anywhere, blah blah blah" things, but PM me and I can tell you if you like.
But as it is, I'm not seeing any Osars noms for the movie.

However, during the focus group, when they asked if we found anything confusing, someone said they could have expalined some of Jake Gyllenhaal's backstory better, like why he always wore such tight shirts in the movie, and i wanted to chime in and say "that's for this one guy I know".

I'd PM the poster if I could A) remember my screen name and password and B) had ever participated in any discussion there.

Also, it's annoying that Jake's back story isn't in there and I agree on the shirts, from the few clips we saw. It looks like he has a bullet proof vest on underneath.

Scott said...

Hmm, not sure if so much could be put into one person's take on a screening that is probably not completed edited. But it's encouraging that someone is interested in Jake's character's back story.

UltraViolet said...

I found this through a Hug Jackman forum, and the posters there think the Awards Daily posters are somewhat anti-Hugh. So who knows.

Monica said...

Jake Gyllenhaal's backstory better

Jake's character is underdeveloped?

About Oscar, is so early to talk about it.

UltraViolet said...

Monica, it is ridiculous to be talking about Oscars at this point. But that's what that site is all about, I guess.

Lara, I forgot to say thanks for the twitter explanation yesterday. Now it makes sense :)

Scott said...

"Monica, it is ridiculous to be talking about Oscars at this point. But that's what that site is all about, I guess"

On that site, they have people with Oscar noms for films that are not even completed filming. Based on Cannes, the Cohen Brothers film seems to be an early Oscar worthy movie for both male and female leads and supporting John Goodman. I wished Jake had that lead but they wanted an unknown and apparently he delivers.

FP said...

I do not know if, as they say fans of Hugh, in Dayil Awards are a priori against Hugh although I imagine they'll have a reason to assert it.Just as we know that Indiewire or Nikki are never too benevolent or even just nice to Jake.Anyway, I remember that last year at some point Awards Daily's posters had completely excluded Hugh from the quintet of nominees for best actor. And we know how things went

I rather wonder why Detective Loki is wearing his shirts buttoned all the way up, even though he doesn't wear ties.

Detective Loki's look raises a lot of questions. Am very curious to see how it works.

Looks like Jake's candidate is going to be the next mayor of LA.

bobbyanna - No deets on the girl Jake was with on the Bowery? Sorry, can't help myself ;)

UltraViolet said...

Why don't you do a little research yourself, anon? It's not that hard to look up a tweeter.

And if you think I'm being rude? It's rude, borderline trollish considering some of Jake's "fans," to pop in with an anonymous question like that.

Pick a name and try conversing about something other than Jake's love life.

Anonymous said...

@ Ultraviolet 1)I can't access any social media at work 2) I don't have an ipod or any device to do so independently and 3) it's a fairly harmless question so GET OVER YOURSELF, please.

UltraViolet said...

Clueless anon:

The question is totally harmless. The annoyance comes from people who waltz in and expect other people to do all the lifting, but don't bother to pick a name or explain why they are asking for basic information anyone can find.

1. That's a shame.

2. Not sure why you think you need an iPod to go on twitter. You can access it from any browser.

3. Fuck off.

Anonymous said...

I'll take the high road here and refrain from abusive language which I'm sure is not wanted on this site, I CAN NOT ACCESS SOCIAL MEDIA, where I AM IT'S BLOCKED. That's why I asked my little question.

You must be having a very bad day for such a harmless thing to set you off so. I hope things get better for you.

UltraViolet said...

I understand that you can't get to social media. I don't understand why you can't pick a name, join the conversation and bring something else to the table other than requests to find out more about Jake's date, if it was one.

I'm not having a particularly bad day. I'm just sick of people coming in here and not bringing anything to the table. You were the proverbial straw.

I'll admit to being churlish if you admit that you could have been more gracious by picking a name and explaining why you asked.

To prove that Jake is nicer to strangers than I am, I found this cute old story:

Big GA Fan, but he is kind of a jerk. I don't think there would have been a rush on him at a little league game if he had quietly snapped a photo. Some people are just not personable, but he still could have been polite.

By contrast, I was at a Dodger game a few years ago with my sister. We were sitting across the aisle from Jake Gyllenhaal. I had to smile to myself as I watched this big movie star opening the toy surprise from his cracker jack box. :) During the game we asked if we could take a photo and he was lovely and sweet as could be. Then later in the game Manny Ramirez hit a pinch hit grand slam and as we were all hugging each other, my sister was ONLY hugging Jake Gyllenhaal - I never let her live that one down!

Some people are just nicer than other people, and some people forget how to treat the fans that love them.

And yes, I know Jake is not always completely nice.

UV, I'm not surprised on negative reviews about Ryan Gosling's new movie. Festival director didn't want to put it in the official competition.
I'm surprised on the comments about Ryan's performance. Variety's critic said that a wallpaper is more expressive than Ryan.

Paula C. said...

Monica, I didn´t see this particular performance from Ryan , but ever since I saw him in Drive it as been disappointment after disappointment, it's always more of the same, so no surprise here!

bobbyanna said...

I felt that way when I saw Ryan in Ides of March, and then Drive. And I like Ryan. First movie I remember was Murder By Numbers. He was menacing. Sort of like in Drive, but he played a villain.

FYI, I've instituted the annoying word recognition on comments because I don't want to wake up to 15 more spam comments and nothing else.

Sorry for the hassle.

UltraViolet said...

I like Ryan Gosling. I hate the Ryan Gosling hype. I do not think his acting talent is at the level he is given credit for. But he seems like a good guy.

Some of the tweets have made me laugh, especially because the movie looks ridiculous.

Scott said...

"Some of the tweets have made me laugh, especially because the movie looks ridiculous"

I think that is more the director's fault, it seems as if the film is more about the lead character being detached from the all the violence.

bobbyanna said...

"I like Ryan Gosling. I hate the Ryan Gosling hype. I do not think his acting talent is at the level he is given credit for. But he seems like a good guy."

Exactly.

He was smart to miss Cannes.

Scott said...

But all the negative press about "Only God Forgives" can only help the film because there will be an audience who will want to see all that violence.

It's making quite the splash on the internet and it just may have the opposite affect and people will want to see what all the fuss is about. Audiences do not trust critics and film festivals anymore.

UltraViolet said...

I don't think it's going to drive that many people to it, pun intended. Drive was a critically acclaimed stylish bloodbath, and it made $35 million.

Gosling is a bigger phenomenon now, so that might help. But The Place Beyond Misery has made only $20 million so far.

UltraViolet said...

How annoying are you finding the word recognition? I don't have to do it, since this is my blog. But I'm curious if it's irritating people.

It was nice to wake up to no spam for me.

How can you go in a few days from "the new Brando" to "less expressive than a wallpaper?
They should be more careful exalting before and destroy without no hesitation after
I completely agree with the analysis of UltraViolet
