Sweet charity

Business Week interviewed winners of celebrity charity auctions, including a woman who got to meet Jake Gyllenhaal:

Hang out backstage with Jake Gyllenhaal
Winner: Linda Boileau, political cartoonist at the State Journal, Lexington, Ky.
Site: Charitybuzz
Paid: Will not disclose

I’m a fan of Jake’s and was looking around online for what was going on with him. I knew he was doing a play, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, and came across Charitybuzz offering tickets to see it and do a meet-and-greet with him. I won, so they told me when I got to the theater I should call, and he’d come take me backstage. Jake was just wonderful. He’s so kind, not egotistical. I knew he had dogs, so I did a caricature of his dogs. He was really interested that I was a cartoonist. We went back to his dressing room and just talked, sat for about half an hour. We talked about his dogs and the play and Kentucky, where I’m from. He didn’t rush through anything. I didn’t ask him any personal questions—I didn’t want to seem goofy. I wasn’t thinking it would be hours of walking around the city or anything. He grew a really big beard for the play and had long hair, but he’s still a really nice-looking guy.

We saw the photo from the play in the fall, but it's nice to get the story behind the story.

In December, Jake participated in ICAP Charity Day:

2012 ICAP Charity Day by GyllenBabble

You can see him at about the 2'10" and 3'55" mark

In April, Jake is going to be honored for his work with Edible Schoolyard.

In November, Jake did a reading at a free performance for the military and their families:

Loved reading Linda's report on her meeting with Jake backstage. Curious that she referred to his "dogs" and he didn't correct her. I was thinking about Boo and I don't think he has him anymore.

Don't ruin Jocelyn Leigh's image of him as the perfect guy. Cool that you recognized him. I could be seated next to Queen Elizabeth and be oblivious to it.

Alex noticed him first, he actually is quite good looking....if you overlook the size of his head:) As we were leaving everyone at the front of house were excitedly looking at the table. Seemed very down to earth and low key.

Why is there always someone who claims Jake isn't where all of twitter and photographic evidence say he is?

There was a Mumford concert tonight at the Susquehanna Bank Center, which, though in Camden, New Jersey, is very closer to Philadelphia.

There is a photo of him and tweets of people who saw him at a restaurant in Philadelphia.

This isn't rocket science.

I assume that is Marcus M in the photo, though it really could be Jason Biggs.

Anonymous said...

When you look at the mumford and sons schedule it says that they are playing in new Jersy tonight not Philadelphia.

FP said...

Geez Anon:)

But Jake was!

bobbyanna said...

Camden New Jersey is about five minutes away from Philadelphia.

About five miles. : )

So it makes sense that they would be in Philly eating at Buddakan. They're very close.

UltraViolet said...

Yes, as I just explained and anyone with google and/or a map can see, the venue is close to Philadelphia and is advertised as having an eye-popping view of the Philadelphia skyline.

Also, I think the Prisoners hairdo isn't doing Jake's forehead any favors :)

Scott said...

"Also, I think the Prisoners hairdo isn't doing Jake's forehead any favors :)"

lol, I have not read the book but is there a description of the detective character? I assume the haircut and possible neck art are a part of Jake's protrayal of the character.

Sometimes I think Jake makes an effort to mask those devasting good looks of his when it comes to the characters he plays.

Rachel said...

I assume that is Marcus M in the photo, though it really could be Jason Biggs.

Well now that we know he's at the Mumford show, that guy in the pic earlier is SO Marcus Mumford! C'mon, looks just like him, lol!

I assume when people post on GB they're either at their computer or on smart phone or device where you can easily pull up GOOGLE MAPS. Jeez. Camden/Philly is like NYC/Hoboken, or some other big city with another big city just across the river. Why is this so difficult to figure out?

UltraViolet said...

Oh, I think it's Marcus. I just meant, "It really could be if you didn't know it was probably Marcus" :)

I know some Hugh J fans aren't crazy about his facial hair for the movie, so maybe they are trying to downplay everyone's god looks!

UltraViolet said...

And yes, Rachel, on the google business. This isn't hard, folks!

Anonymous said...

I think it's great that Jake is there for his friends. He loves Mumford and Sons and tries to see them every chance he gets. Camden is not far from Philly at all.

I also wonder that Jake did not correct that lady when she said he had dogs. So far we've only seen him with Atticus. He didn't have boo for long. Unless he got another dog since moving to NY.

bobbyanna said...

Sorry, UV, didn't read your post before I posted.

Thanks for finding that post from the cartoonist who got to meet Jake. I'm glad she had such a good experience.

Don't know what to think about Jake's hair for this movie. Slicked back is definitely not my favorite look. Hugh Jackman's beard isn't nearly as long for Prisoners as it was for Wolverine, I don't think.

UltraViolet said...

We don't know what Jake said about the dogs. If she did a drawing of both, maybe he didn't want to make her feel bad. It wasn't a long conversation, and it seems like Jake tried to learn more about her than talk about himself.

Monica, the Wolverine look is far, far worse, you're right! LOL.

This is interesting. Jake is just nine places away from the Golden Boy. I assumed RG would be in the Top 10.

Haven't read the methodology, and the data could be flawed, given that they list Nailed as Jake's next project, as if it's still active.

Hello again, fellow Gyllenbabblers! Love the title of the new post, UV! (bittersweet movie)
Fun video from the ICAP Charity Day. Lovely short flashes of Jake; unfortunately, no words from him (instead, too many from Reese).
I’m glad that another one of Jake’s "sweet charities" will honour him. Let’s see what the Edible Schoolyard celebration on April 15 will bring. Hopefully, more friends and family members will join him this time.

– Tied in with the theme of this post, Jake’s support of the causes he believes in:

Garcetti has picked up contributions from former Disney Chief Executive Michael Eisner, as well as newcomers to local politics Jake Gyllenhaal and Hayek, who once traveled with Garcetti on a global warming awareness mission to the South Pole.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-adv-mayor-hollywood-20130217,0,3665475.story

While WSJ, in a recent article, sarcastically raises the question: Why celebrities have become so engaged in this "rather inconsequential" mayoral race?, for Jake the honest answer is: out of loyalty to a friend. Garcetti befriended Jake (and Salma) during the 2005 Inuit Earth Day Event.
http://www.iheartjakemedia.com/displayimage.php?album=606&pid=36224#top_display_media

– A recent interview with Richard Coyle, his brother in PoP (who - turns out - played Hal in the original West End stage version of "Proof"), reveals another longtime friendship:

Richard Coyle had a unique dynamic with Jake Gyllenhaal when filming 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time'. The 40-year-old actor first struck up a friendship with the Hollywood heartthrob when Jake took on Richard's on-stage role in the film 'Proof' - which Richard starred in on London's West End alongside Gwyneth Paltrow in 2002 (...). "So Jake had been to see the play and we chatted. We sort of bonded over it. When we met again on 'Prince of Persia' there was a kind of dynamic of older brother, younger brother. I suppose there was a mutual respect and that already helped us together. And we have a lovely dynamic now, we still speak often."

http://www.tvguide.co.uk/storydetail.asp?id=25128&catid=2

– Along with Sophie Buhai’s crush on her childhood neighbour-turned-Hollywood-star, here’s Emmy Rossum’s endearing admission (at the recent premiere of "Beautiful Creatures", with...Viola Davis):

We asked Rossum and Davis about their biggest concerns as 16-year-olds. Davis' answer was pretty standard: "That I would never have a boyfriend."
Rossum, on the other hand, might as well have said "turning evil." "I was filming The Day After Tomorrow, it was my first big film, and I had to kiss Jake Gyllenhaal, so I was really nervous. The night before, I got a big zit and, stupidly, I picked at it, so then it was bigger and infected and had a scab over it. Jake called it my ‘third eye,'" Rossum recalled. Her 16-year-old self was crushed — "He's never going to want to kiss me now!"

http://www.interviewmagazine.com/nightlife/the-cinema-society-dior-beauty-host-a-screening-of-beautiful-creatures#/_

(Cute! :) Though, I distinctly remember a clip from the making of TDAT, with Emmy Rossum exuberantly kissing Jake at a rehearsal – UV may be of assistance...)

IHJ has pictures with Jake and Sophie at the premiere of "The Descendants", a couple of years ago:
http://www.iheartjakemedia.com/thumbnails.php?album=2037

It never ceases to amaze me that Jake still keeps in touch with his childhood friends - a movie star who’s still friends with his next door neighbour (Sophie), the kids he met in kindergarten (Adam Levine, Jason Segel), or the girlfriend from his early 20s (Jenny Lewis). And we all know he’s a constant presence at Marcus Mumford’s :) and Jay-Z’s concerts, and in their lives.

– Tied in with Hagen's previous link to Cineuropa, ParisMatch posted yesterday 'Festival de Cannes 2013: le temps des rumeurs'. They mention the same (possible) Canadian movies (and one interesting Mexican title), while giving a tantalizing description for 'An Enemy'.

Which means: Canada could be represented by Xavier Dolan’s «Tom Γ  la ferme» and Denis Villeneuve’s «An Enemy» with MΓ©lanie Laurent, Jake Gyllenhaal and Sarah Gadon. Described by Villeneuve as «an existential erotic thriller», the movie is an adaptation (.....) Several South-American films are mentioned: «Manto AcuΓfero» and «Chavez» by Mexican directors Michael Rowe and Diego Luna (...)

- the mentions of 'An Enemy' as a possible contender are promising; let’s hope Thierry FrΓ©maux agrees; and if he does, (big) chances are the movie is really good.
- 'an existential erotic thriller'
I don’t remember the book being particularly erotic – but hey, if the movie turns out to be, I’m sure there’ll be no complaints ;)
- if the predictions come true, Jake’s and Michael’s new movies could be competitors.

Cannes is all about the big names in the arthouse business. There were quite a few critically panned movies which competed for the "Palme d'Or" in the past years, among them "Blindness" directed by Oscar-nominee Fernando Meirelles. I think most of all, the Cannes Film Festival would be a very good platform to market "An Enemy". The movie reportedly has a production budget of 7.985 million Euro (10.7 million US-Dollar). The marketing budgets of the various distributors will probably be rather low, so any publicity would be helpful and welcome. The line-up will be announced on April 18th.

UltraViolet said...

Hi Laure - had just been wondering about you :)

Jake does talk at the second point. Sadly, we get to hear only "Let's traaade." But it made me smile.

I loved hearing that Jake stays in touch with Richard Coyle. I watched a bit of PoP during the blizzard/power outage, and I continue to love that movie. Critics and haters, be damned.

I haven't seen that video of Jake and Emmy Rossum in a while. Not sure if it's still on the interwebs, but I'll look :)

Fingers crossed for Cannes and, more importantly, a US distributor for An Enemy.

Don'tk now if Mississippi Grind will be shooting in April, or if Jake will actually be at this, but from FB:

11th Annual Poetry & the Creative Mind

Jake Gyllenhaal, Mario Batali, Rose Styron, National Student Poet Claire Lee, and other leading artists, scholars, and public figures will come together on one stage on April 17, 2013 at 6:30pm for an extraordinary evening celebrating the role of contemporary poetry in American culture.

Poetry & the Creative Mind helps raise critical funds for the Academy's annual programs, including National Poetry Month. Tickets for the 11th annual Poetry & the Creative Mind at Lincoln Center are now available through the Lincoln Center box office.

And Film.com did an interview with an Oscar voter. My favorite part:

Was there any nomination that you were really rooting for that ultimately didn’t come to pass?

I’d have loved to see “Ruby Sparks” get an original screenplay nod. “Cabin in the Woods” cleverly rewrote and undid every teen in peril horror movie ever made, but I guess not enough folks in the writer’s branch were thinking Oscar. Jake Gyllenhall was the best he’s ever been in “End of Watch.” Rosemarie DeWitt stole “Promised Land” and “Your Sister’s Sister.” Jack Black was honestly brilliant in “Bernie,” inhabiting that real life person’s skin as completely as Day-Lewis inhabits Lincoln. I also loved the score for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” – perfect for the film, but also truly beautiful music that’s both earthy and ethereal.

NC-17? I'm talking something like what happened to Shame. Shame was bought by Fox Searchlight after the screening in Toronto.

bobbyanna said...

oh, I hope not, monica. I'd rather see it get an R. That would open it up to more audiences. The NC17 rating is so restrictive. In general I think the ating ystem is silly. I understand films that are not appropriate for children, but honestly, The R & NC 17 do more harm than good.

Seems like they did Hugh Jackman's scenes without Jake in the shoot earlier and now doing Jake's without Hugh. There were photos of him in NYC with his kids earlier.

"Shame" contains full frontal nudity, whereas Jake is supposed to wear a 'cock sock' in "An Enemy" (An assistant on the set wrote about preparing such a sock for Jake). I guess an R rating for "An Enemy" is likely.

- Thank you for your concern, UV, and excuse my delayed response(s). Because my coworker took a leave of absence, the workload is a nightmare. Ditto the stress. Hopefully next month she’ll be back.

I replayed the ICAP video, and finally heard: Let's trade!

- Thanks, Hagen, for the new "bootlegged" production pics! Not to mention the details about all sorts of fitting socks ;) They crack me up! Sock or no sock, Bobbyanna’s question still stands: how could any movie starring Jake & billed as an "erotic thriller" might have problems finding distributor? :))

With all the discussions about a possible Cannes presence, I almost forgot about "An Enemy" not having a US distributor yet. I don’t think they’re having difficulties in finding some distributor (small foreign film, yet respectable names in the cast – Gyllenhaal, Laurent, Rossellini – and a promising director). They probably want to show it first in a prestigious festival; maybe, just maybe they think there’s a chance of winning an award, or at least garner critics’ attention...

- Jake’s longtime camaraderie with Richard Coyle was a nice surprise. I wonder how many other actors, directors etc. he still keeps in touch with – understatedly, without big declarations of eternal brotherhood in People Magazine. So many things in Jake’s life seem to be built on friendship, respect and discretion.

- "Prince of Persia" to cope with the snowy winters, "The Day After Tomorrow" to cope with the long hot summers. There’s a recipe I’d like to follow!
Speaking of TDAT, I loved that video where Emmy took Jake by surprise heartily kissing him in rehearsals. He was flustered for a second, then gladly got with the program :)

- Jake is getting more and more involved in the "art meets social causes" side of his job. First Arts In The Armed Forces, Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert, now 11th Annual Poetry & The Creative Mind.
So, April 15 – Edible Schoolyard benefit, April 17 – American Poetry... Maybe April will be the start of preproduction for "Mississippi Grind", with principal photography in May...Don't know.
Come spring, things will be hectic for "all things Jake". Buckle our seatbelts and enjoy the ride!

Some "Prisoners" news:

http://www.newtoncitizen.com/news/2013/feb/21/prisoners-filming-closes-conyers-thoroughfare/

Filming of "Prisoners" will close Flat Shoals Road in Conyers, from Ga. Highway 138 to Parker Road, all day Saturday. The Conyers Police Department will close the road from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. while filmmakers work to film a scene that will include stunts.

"They are basically doing a scene for the movie that involves a busy intersection on a road where one of the characters is being chased and runs out of the woods into the road. (...) Stunts are involved, so there has to be a proximity that they can totally control." (...)

Hartsell said Saturday's filming will mark a short hiatus in filming in the area before crews return later this month. "They're going to finish out this weekend here and then they are going to another location," she said. "Then they are coming back again the last week of February and the first week of March over in Milstead.

Hartsell said the Conyers-Rockdale community has established a good working relationship with the filmmakers. "They really love us, and we are happy they are here," she said.

Definitely, the chase scene will involve the police, thus detective Loki (on IMDB, Jake is the only actor with a stunt double assigned).
This scene ties in with Bobbyanna’s observation: Seems like they did Hugh Jackman's scenes without Jake in the shoot earlier and now doing Jake's without Hugh.

As an aside, separating Hugh's and Jake’s scenes, while perfect for Hugh’s busy schedule, is not a stretch for this particular production. In the script (no spoilers), their characters have few scenes together, but relevant ones. They have mostly parallel storylines that collide in key moments. I expect (actually, hope) these few scenes between them to be really intense.

I'm that cool girl sitting three bar stools away from Jake Gyllenhaal and tweeting about it..

I'm glad we can all work together and cover the Jake news around the globe.

Me too! Thanks so much for that.

I honestly can say I met some of the nicest people and made real friends "through" Jake.
He's not only good at maintaining his own friendships, but in creating new ones. And he's not even trying. LOL

The weather may not cooperate with the filming schedule. I see they are having a lot of rain down there. Of course, if it's all indoors it won't matter.

We are having snow. And unfortunately, I think it's heading East.: (

Someone on twitter said Jake was on her plane, two hours ago. She was returning to NYC/New Jersey area from a ski trip in Colorado with a layover in ATL, as nearly as I can piece it together from her tweets. So it seems he may be headed back to NYC.

With all the discussions about a possible Cannes presence, I almost forgot about "An Enemy" not having a US distributor yet. I don’t think they’re having difficulties in finding some distributor ...

Exactly one year ago Collider reported that Open Road would distribute EoW in the U.S., six months after the movie was shot in August 2011. Maybe American distributors want to watch a mostly finished movie before they decide to acquire the distribution rights. I've no doubt that "An Enemy" will find a distributor in the U.S. sooner or later, but I'm curious to know how the distributor will handle the U.S. release.

Steven Spielberg is rumored to be the president of the Jury in Cannes (Premiere). The article mentions once again "An Enemy" as a probable candidate.

There are all kinds of ways film rights are purchased by distributors. Sometimes, even with art house films, a distributor may negotiate a deal for several films all at once, and Enemy could be part of a package. It takes time to assemble a package that a distributor will then offer to exhibitors.

MΓ©lanie Laurent mentions "An Enemy" in an interview with Indiewire:

You have a busy upcoming slate.

First is “Now You See Me” – it’s an action movie. Crazy cast, I can’t believe I have my name after Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and then mine. Michael Caine too. Huge movie, French director Louis Leterrier, very, very fun to do. Not a big revolutionary movie about the resistance or something, it’s more like FBI against magicians. Which is fun sometimes to do … it’s gonna be released in June, I guess.

Then “An Enemy” – absolutely the opposite. Something very intellectual, a very complicated story from the book [by Jose Saramago] with a Canadian amazing director [“Incendies” director Denis Villeneuve], but really intense. Not really fun to do but intense and I’m sure it is gonna be something amazing.

Interesting comments form Melanie Laurent. From all indications, it wasn't a "fun" shoot. But I hope that will translate into a good movie.

Thanks for all the updates, Hagen. I keep waiting for the big one - a trailer. Or a release date!
