Prisoners shooting

Here's a clean-shaven Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of Prisoners, the new movie he's filming with Hugh Jackman, directed by Denis Villeneuve.

So the beard is gone but he has neck tattoos again.

Photos from Lainey Gossip.

Do you think I should e-mail her the list of sites and reviewers that put EoW in their Top 2012 lists?

That's Jake posing with the Universal Cheerleaders Association champions at the Atlanta airport. He seems to be on his way to Salt Lake City.

She has always been a great Jake supporter, so I think she would be receptive to the list.

I'd really like to, Mary. But her site has no commenting. Probably good for atmosphere but really irritating when you'd like to correct her on her many mistakes.

Lainey has not always been a great Jake supporter, Scott. She is a fickle one, at best. Her post about how she's the only one to know the greatness of EoW is typically self-deluded.

De nada, Monica :)

I was just about to come here bearing gifts... but nobody's as prompt as you, UV. You're a wizard. :)

Fresh new pictures with a fresh-faced Jake as detective Loki - this is cause for celebration! :D

I'll go back and thoroughly check these pics. At first glance, Loki looks like I thought he would (from the blurry pic tweeted some time ago): clean shaven with longish slicked-back hair. Only, it lacks some oomph. Then again, maybe it's intentional for a dark psychological thriller. Plus, the neck tattoo has to be Jake's addition to his character's portrait (are police detectives even allowed to have visible tattoos?). It makes Loki edgier, more daring from the get–go.

It's refreshing to see Jake's smile. The beautiful smile itself, and the fact that he's obviously happy doing his job. It's all that matters.

Thank you, UV!

(Unfortunately, I don't think Jake will be able to accompany his family to Sundance tomorrow, for mom's directorial debut and Peter's premieres. If only he could have had an additional couple of days off... Maybe next year Sundance will be on Jake's agenda again, this time for "Mississippi Grind"!)

Chica said...

Hello gorgeous! And that smile is radiant! I bet that tattoo was his idea too.

Lainey is a pain in the ass, but what the hell, send het the list!

Rachel said...

So it appears Detective Loki will have some sort of backstory judging by the neck tattoo. Cool.

FP said...

Oh My God! Girls you are the best!:) Thanks!

He is soooo hot!!!!

I have to say, I like what Lainey said about EOW;-)
Perhaps she is not very informed, however she expresses true love for the movie and that's always good in my book :))

Wow the Ceremony has been magnificent the discourse of the president Obama has made me cry, and the poetry read by the poet was great as well.
Byonce and Kelly Clarcson were amazing, and I have spotted Jay Z:) he was so serious and elegant, He seemed a member of the Congress more than a Rapper/Musician/SuperStar :)

And I just love and respect with all my heart The First Lady Michelle Obama:)!

UltraViolet said...

Oh, Lily. Jake is always such a disappointment to you.

I do not think the tattoo is real, no.

Laure, thanks for the props but I feel like this is the first thing in weeks that I've been fast on!

I'm withholding judgment on the look. But it's great to see the whole face.

I do agree, FP, that it's great for Lainey to give EoW a push. But her attitude toward Jake in general bugs me. For one, she calls him "Jakey." For another, she was totally Team Taylor. I don't think she's really a fan, which is her prerogative. But props to her for getting these pics!

Lots of positive tweets for The Way Way Back at Sundance. It's nothing revelatory, apparently, but very enjoyable.

From one of the people who posted about seeing Jake last night at The Optimist:

Damn. He just left and didn't take me with him.

Ha, ha! No photos or verbal exchange, but we nearly brushed shoulders passing by one another at the restrooms. He is eye candy at its finest!

And from the bartender there:

Jake Gyllenhaals @ the Optimist. I thought it was only appropriate to send him our "Sparkle Motion" cocktail against our managers will.

LOL - no idea if that's true.

Does this man ever rest? And what a friend this Villeneuve guy is!
It would be fantastic - for him, to be able to support his mom and his brother-in-law; and for us too. :) Pictures! From Sundance! After 8-9 years? I feel giddy.

UV, you're always here when it matters: like these first pictures from the set of "Prisoners". Or documenting his frenetic life, with flights back and forth from NY to Atlanta to Utah in a matter of days.

I share your distrust of Lainey's gossip site. She has good sources (hence these pics) and she wants to be perceived as a Jake fan, yet she has put a (more or less hidden) derogatory spin on almost everything about him lately. It would be great to refute her claims with your detailed list of mentions for End of Watch.

I'm undecided on the look yet. For one it's good to see the face and see him smile, but he looks differently than I expected.

Which tells me that his role will differ from what I expected it too.

You know I love Jake, but the look, tattoos and slicked back hair, makes me think that he will be kind of an a**, especially if Hugh looks all lovable family man.

Which - don't get me wrong - is wonderful. Ever since "Time To Dance" I'm waiting for Jake to be the bad guy. At least for some part of the movie.

Laure said...

Sasha: I was looking for a word to describe was I thought was missing. I said: oomph. Thank you for suggesting a better word: warmth. Jake is a beautiful man with sweet, gentle features, even strict slicked-back hair and tattoos can't make him look like a cold bastard. Yet, maybe he has decided to stretch his character, to make him seem initially more cocky, arrogant. So that the reversal of roles will be more compelling. Or maybe we're just projecting.
Hugh's character may look like a lovely family man (although, I haven't seen his "Prisoners" look yet, and the current one doesn't exactly spell lovely to me), but he won't stay the same. Characters changing, evolving/devolving, make for a better movie.

Monica said...

This hair was what I expected to see, since in many movies agents have this haircut. The only thing that intrigues me is the tattoo.

I saw Argo and liked more than expected. Still don't buy the nomination for best supporting actor for Alan Arkin.
And ZDT still remains my favorite movie!

New Post! Spotted: Jake Gyllenhaal at Frankies 570 :: http://www.neonapple.net/?p=620

UltraViolet said...

Lily, but you post a lot about things you wish Jake would do, so you leave the impression he's always letting you down.

Was just about to post that, Ma G:

Sitting in an unassuming restaurant in the West Village, five woman of various ages huddle around a table in the back, locked in conversation with one man. He seemed to have charisma… His arm was draped over the chair back next to him and he regularly smiled and thanked the waitress who topped up their wine glasses. There was an aura about him and an energy surrounding that table that made me look twice.

And rightly so.

Jake Gyllenhaal. As gorgeous as you remember from Brokeback Mountain (it made my heart sink a little , imagining how many times he may have dined here with his late buddy Heath Ledger). As I snuck in a glimpse over towards his table, I wondered how Taylor Swift let this one get away. Was she crazy? He looked like the kind of guy I just wished I could walk over and have a drink and a laugh with. He seemed cool, calm…collected.

And I love the fact it was a Tuesday night, in the back of an Italian eatery in the West Village: Frankies Spuntino 570 (570 Hudson St, West Village). Spuntino, meaning “an informal meal or snack; a casual eatery”. How ironically appropriate!

From a FBer who works at Luggo Caffe:

And this weekends guests include: Spike Lee, Sting's progeny, and Jake Gylenhaal.

From the NY Post:

Jake Gyllenhaal at ABC Kitchen with his mom and another female, who we’re told was not a date. Wearing a baseball hat and a hoodie, he said hello to Susan Sarandon before sitting down for a meal of spaghetti

Oh, don't get me wrong, UV, I completely agree with you. I was talking strictly about his looks. This is why, in portraying a true villain, he will have to play against type. I saw "Time to Dance" and I'm intrigued by the idea of Jake playing a psychopath or a sociopath on the big screen. He's very good at conveying internal struggles and conflicts.

I like this description:
"He seemed to have charisma. (...) He regularly smiled and thanked the waitress who topped up their wine glasses. There was an aura about him and an energy surrounding that table that made me look twice. (...) He looked like the kind of guy I just wished I could walk over and have a drink and a laugh with."
Several times people have described him as gracious and polite, calm, collected, while exuding an electrifying charisma.

And this:
"Jake Gyllenhaal at ABC Kitchen with his mom. (...) He said hello to Susan Sarandon before sitting down for a meal of spaghetti."
He's a good son, and he shows a lot of genuine respect for his elder, more experienced colleagues. And I think Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow (who's more like a slightly older friend) treat him with motherly care.

Today marks the five year anniversary of Heath Ledger's death. :sigh:
It's a sad day, a sad reminder...

I don't know how many have read the book, but it's a perfect vehicle for Jake. With Fincher directing, even better. I hate that Reese's involvement may mean that Jake won't get the chance.

The film also would answer the question of whether Jake can play a bad guy.

Do you think Jake or Finch would want to work together again? It does not sound like Witherspoon would star but it would be great for Jake's to "off her" if only in a movie.

Why is Dragon tatoo getting a sequel? It was not that great of a film box office wise or content wise.

FP said...

Scott:)

Last Saturday we reported the news that there would be a Lance Armstrong biopic coming our way, with Lost creator JJ Abrams at the helm. We then asked you which actor you thought would best portray the cyclist's fall from grace. With tongues already wagging in Hollywood, there's since been a bunch of names thrown into the mix and we couldn't agree more with the following two suggestions; Bradley Cooper and Michael Fassbender.

Meanwhile the Huffington Post have suggested names such as the aforementioned Matt Damon (he might want to shed a few pounds first), Christian Bale (yes, that could work), Jake Gyllenhaal (perhaps, he's got versatility on his side)

Who should play Lance Armstrong?
Jake Gyllenhaal 18%
Michael Fassbender 45%
Matt Damon 5%
Matthew McConaughey 12%
Christian Bale 12%
Bradley Cooper 8%

A total of 135 viewers have voted so far.

Monica! how could you?!!! lol :))

UltraViolet said...

Oh, I wouldn't want Jake to star with Reese. She is totally wrong for the part, and it bugs me that she'd even consider playing the role.

I wouldn't expect her to hire Jake, but it's a shame. A very buzz-y book and with Fincher, hopefully, a good movie.

I think the jury is out on the Dragon Tattoo sequel.

Also, I can't describe how much it bugs me that "journalists" just repeat the claim that Jake was attached to star in a movie about Lance Armstrong, something that never was official or even true, I don't think.

bobbyanna said...

I'd really love to see Jake be a bad guy, too, but I'd also love to see him do a really smart comedy, or a caper movie.

Really not interested in seeing him in another bio-pic. He did Graysmith, Homer Hickam, and Anthony Swofford.

Guess we don't have to worry about Gone Girl. Doubt he'd be interested. I wonder if Fincher's really interested, or if they're just floating his name out there to heighten interest. They do play those games.

I watched Jake & Heath @ the SAG Awards for BBM, tonight, on You Tube. It made me smile.

bobbyanna said...

Wanted to add that Jake & Fincher together on Gone Girl would've been cool. Except for the Reese Factor.

I may not be remembering correctly, but wasn't the Dragon Tattoo trilogy sort of a package deal?I mean, Fincher, Craig and Rooney Mara had to commit to all three?

I thought it was foolish to remake them bcz I'd seen the Noomi Rapace films and she fit the character so thoroughly it was hard to imagine anyone replacing her.

FP said...

I know it's totally OT, but I have read that James Franco has written a poem for Barack Obama, and this has made me laugh so hard,
It's just me or James is trying a little bIt too hard? And I like him.lol

I don't know why but I think people would go to the theaters in mass to see a film with Jake and Reese, and this is enough annoying to me.

Scott said...

The movie about Armstrong is not an autobiography so Armstromg will not have a say or any profit. The role is a good one in that the character will be a good guy gone bad and it will take an actor with range.

It's a great part for an actor, that being said I doubt Jake will do even if considered because of his frienship with Lance and then that would cause more problems for Jake because people will wonder if Jake knew.

This movie by Abrahams will not be flattering.

And sorry to tell you, athletes are human and will disapppoint.

Laure said...

First off, it’s so good to see Jake with his mother – he’s so proud of her (I hope the movie does well enough to be an encouragement for Naomi as a director). I especially like the pic where Jake sits besides his godmother, proudly taping the on stage celebration.
There’s plenty of warmth in these pictures!

It bears repeating: being able to see his face, after half a year of hairy obstruction, feels like a privilege. I might be wrong, but I think he’s lost some weight during “If There Is…” marathon, and it shows on his face. Jake being one of those people who doesn’t need to lose any weight at all. I’d be tempted to say he just needs some R&R but we want him working, making movies, lots of them! :) And I think making movies makes him happy too.

I do have a problem with Reese (namely with the way she treated him in the end, and after), so I wouldn’t want to see them together on any project (it would be all about her).
On the other hand, it would be great for Jake to work on another project with David Fincher; however, I’m not sure if they want to (maybe Jake does).
Speaking of: Fincher directing the movie about Armstrong’s fall from grace would be a good idea. IMO, only now his story makes for a good movie: a gifted athlete who managed to beat cancer, then started acting like a god, thinking he can do all kinds of wrong and get away with it. Now that it became a more realistic story about deception, I’d like Jake to play the deeply flawed former hero. Only, we don’t know if Jake wants to, how he feels about all of it.

Jake Gyllenhaal was spotted out at the Sundance Film Festival this week, shaking hands and literally kissing babies.

But instead of promoting his own filmmaking, Gyllenhaal came to support his mom, Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal and her directorial debut, "Very Good Girls."

Starring Dakota Fanning, Lizzie Olsen, and Boyd Holbrook, the gang premiered the flick Tuesday in Park City, Utah, and headed to Main Street's NK lounge, a pop-up space from New York nightlife architect Nur Khan.

Gyllenhaal, who commuted from the Georgia set of his new film "Prisoners," donned dark threads and denim for the fete and raved about his mom's work, according to one partygoer.
The 32-year-old mulled over the flick with the likes of Francesca Eastwood -- this year's Miss Golden Globe and still main squeeze of photographer Tyler Shields as far as we know -- along with Fanning.

But back to the family affair: Not only was Gyllenhaal's godmother, Jamie Lee Curtis, in attendance, the actor also spent a "large portion" of the evening cradling and playing with a baby that was rolling with the group.

Agree but studios seem to only go for what they consider the "it" guys although box office does not reflect that. I do not think any of the guys from that poll will garner interest in the movie, at this point it should be a TV movie. Unlike Facebook, there is no mystery.

Viv said...

JGL, Fassbender and Ryan Gosling are rumored in EVERY movies still bugs me.....like others in HW has no acting work to do. XD

FP said...

Scott the last "it" guy was Ryan Gosling who is a very good actor but his last movie GS bombed again,
and immediately start the negative comments "he can't open a movie, it has a squirrel face, etc etc.." people are too much inconstant, perhaps its films are not all Hits but he is still a good serious actor , and deserves respect.
It is also difficult to understand who is really an "It guy", also Bradley Cooper ( before David O. Russell AND Weinstein ) had big hits at the box office but also big bombs, Channing Tatum is a BO draw ( for now) But the guy can't act.
says this I hope that Jake wins ten oscars lol:)

Scott said...

FP you prove my point, those actors can't bring it the number by themselves, they all have big names starring with them. The cast in Prisoners is the first movie in awhile for Jake that has the number of big names associated with it.

All I am saying is that HW and those actors' PR firms are quick to label them the "it" guy although they have not proven it box office wise without other big names. Looper probably would have not been as successful $$ money wise without Bruce Willis attached and the script itself was good but let's face it, BW was the draw.

I am not disrepecting anyone's acting. But in defense of Channing, unlike Brad, he did not luck into his success (Mark Walberg pulled out due to scheduling). I think any actor in that role in SLP would have gotten the awards nomination because of Weinstein

But I could be completely wrong and all those actors deserve that label.

Viv said...

I think I admire JGL and Fassbender more than Ryan Gosling, but I am tired of JGL and Fassbender being EVERYWHERE.....

Still, Jake is my favorite even though he is not "it" boy right now.XD

And Channing Tatum is just.....ugh...it's the biggest mystery in the world.XD

FP said...

scott abour BO I think as you, however I still think Ryan Gosling plays in another League in comparison to Bradley Cooper and Tatum as Viv says it is indeed a mystery.

It is true that a lot of the success of Looper is due to Bruce Willis, also because JGL without other great names beside like with that horrendous film where he is always in bicycle bombed, however he has talent too.

Viv after shame I can't think straight about Fassbender lol:)

Viv said...

Media are way overestimte Ryan Gosling or JGL 's box office draw, thinking they can make LOTS of femael audience to see thier movies.

No one can truely oepn a movie by his own for a long time unless your name is Denzel Washington or Will Smith, so I am pissed off when people said Jake's career was over after POP underperformed(clearly not LOL).

UltraViolet said...

It's unfortunate that the movies Jake made when he was the It Boy didn't do better. Hopefully, his time will come again.

That tweet about An Enemy has piqued my curiosity now! Maybe we'll hear more. Seems to be some kind of movie expo in Quebec.

Viv said...

You are right.Jake's movies were medicore or poor(box office or critics)when he was hot at that time.It really hurt him.Lack of works during that time didn't help him, either. He needs to make more effort to back on track now, but so far he is on the right direction.:)

And what happened about An Enemy?? I need translation, please!!XD

My French is really very limited and Google translate doesn't really clear it up either.

Seems like "An Enemy" is screening somewhere in Quebec any time soon.

Am I right on that one?

Jean-Philippe Dion, co-host of a new Franco-Canadian TV show ("Accès Illimité"), is intrigued by pictures of "An Enemy". So are we. But he doesn't hint at a movie expo or a screening.

Canadian distributor Alliance Vivafilm will release "An Enemy" in Québec in fall ("Le Journal de Québec").

The movie expo is Ciné-Québec, which was the hashtag on the tweet and which is apparently taking place currently. So it looks like there must have been photos or video of An Enemy.

Jake Gyllenhaal, spotted at @WholeFoodsPonce today!

Dakota Fanning on working with Naomi Foner:

e stopped by to chat with the two young actresses about working with director Naomi Foner, mother to Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Naomi's son-in-law, Peter Sarsgaard, also has a role in the film, which is just one example of how connected the family is. Dakota spoke about working with Naomi, saying, "I mean, you meet Naomi, and she's like instant maternal love. . . . If you meet Naomi, you meet Ramona, and you meet Jake, and you meet Maggie, and you meet Peter. They are such a connected family — they're very open, warm, loving people."

OK, I see, thanks for clarifying.

"A casa de José Saramago" announced that "An Enemy" will premiere in spring. No details are given. ("A casa de José Saramago" is a museum in the house where Saramago spent most of the last 18 years of his life. He wrote "The Double" in that house on Lanzarote.)

Pathé International will market "An Enemy" at the Berlinale Film Festival, another opportunity to find additional European distributors (hopefully a German one).

EoW has ended its box office run with a respectable $41 million.

Hagen said...

Adam Kolbrenner, co-producer of "Prisoners", talks about "Prisoners" in an interview:

What were some memorable details of the sale of Aaron Guzikowski’s spec script “Prisoners”?

I gave the script to all the agencies in one weekend in February 2009. Initially, the agents all passed on the project because they felt it was going to be “too hard” to get made. But one agent named Adam Levine responded well to it. Adam at the time was at Endeavor.

Endeavor began to build a package around PRISONERS as the script was sent out around Hollywood. The feedback was unlike anything I’d ever seen. The project had Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale set to star (before production of their film ‘The Fighter’) and had Bryan Singer (XMen) set to direct. Ultimately, that package proved to be too expensive for the marketplace based on the type of story told in PRISONERS. At this point ALCON ENTERTAINMENT (‘Blind Side’, ‘Insomnia’, and upcoming ‘Beautiful Creatures’) asked to purchase the screenplay free and clear of any package.

From there, the project navigated through a process that included having Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star (in the role Wahlberg was interested in playing) that was not able to get off the ground based on timing for Dicaprio.

For some reason I can not see Leo as a father, I assume he would have been Hugh's character.

Lots of nice reports of Jake on set. Glad he's being funny nice :)

From FB:

So, plot corrections that I errant my reported on earlier: the detective is Jake Gyllenhaal, not Hugh Jackman. I saw Jake earlier , but haven't seen Hugh yet. He's here somewhere though. Our present scene is with Viola Davis and Terrence Howard.

Just did our Martini take. That's movie lingo for the last one of the day. This is so much freakin' FUN!! ( But it IS 4:11 a.m. And I still have to get back to Extras Holding, check out, and go home.

End of 1st day report: Jake Gyllenhaal came and hung out right next to me for maybe 25-30 minutes at the end, but he wasn't nearly as chatty as Terrence and Viola. I have Viola's complete recipe for collard greens now. She's a HOOT!

From earlier tweeters:

And that's a wrap for the evening! Jake Gyllenhall is pretty tight. Came and hung out with our little group/clique on set and chatted.

Meeting jake was the highlight of my life 😊

Can you say a bit more about it?

yeah I was in the same scene, and he looks great running through the crowd and doing his job.

I wonder if that Saramago site is correct. I hope so, since it would mean we'd see some promo stuff soon. I think it would be fun if it went to Cannes.

I wonder what part Leo would have played, as well. Or Wahlberg and Bale.

UltraViolet said...

This got cut out of the FB report:

Variety: "A key issue for sales agents and their foreign buyers when assessing the value of an actor is how hard they are willing to work on promoting a movie internationally.

Aldemisa COO Jere Hausfater recalls watching George Clooney, before he was a big movie star, spending an hour patiently pressing the flesh in the lobby of Carlton Hotel during Cannes. 'He's worked at it from the beginning of his career, and it's really paid off for him.'

Such commitment is why someone like Jake Gyllenhaal can get his big projects financed (and his big fees paid) from foreign sales, while another actor of equivalent or even higher domestic status might struggle."

It's still unclear how the protagonist of "An Enemy" is called. Yet another source calls him Abundie Bell (cinoche), whereas Pathé International refers to him as Adam.

Watching the SAG Awards, I see they haven't ditched the overly earnest intros/summaries of the movies. Also, it's criminal that the EoW cast didn't get an ensemble nomination.

Also criminal? Justin Timberlake's suit. And the fact that he gets to attend these things.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Anne looked fantastic, congratulations on her win alone Jones, Fey, Danes and Moore. Baldwin's 8th win is absurd. After a few wins an actor should remove themselves from competition.

I don't think the union is the explanation for JT's appearance. I think he thinks of himself as an actor now.

Jennifer Lawrence's win is totally unjustified.

I think what has hurt ZDT is the fact that Bigelow doesn't have a god answer for the questions people have. Surprisingly unprepared and/or unwilling to engage on the topic.

Loved seeing Dick Van Dyke. Oh to look so good at 87!

Scott said...

Tripe DDD is great, I love how he is not Hollywood, just an actor and it took him a long time to get that reputation. Daniel does not do a lot of the Oscar Campaigning that most actors do, others may do it for him but it's his body of work everyone remembers.

I could not tell you who won best actor last year or the movie the actor was in. But I know that Daniel won for There will be Blood and I know his work from My Left Foot and the Last of the Mohicans and I remember one of Daniel's first roles that I saw was in The Beautiful Launderette.

I hope for the same reputation and career for Jake, IMO he's has been on his way for a long time. He has had many iconic roles for a guy who is only 32.

The video clips they showed tonight looked interesting. I saw Beasts of the Southern Wild last night. Very interesting, well done. That little girl is adorable but definitely not an Oscar performance.

(OT: "60 Minutes" had two fascinating segments on tonight on CBS: A joint interview of the President and the outgoing Secretary of State, the other was a segment on Lance Armstrong. If anyone wants to check them out, the program's available online @ the CBS website.)

Thanks for that piece of information. I entered a sweepstake to win a visit to the Berlinale this year last week, thinking that I would much rather have been there last year.

But if An Enemy is showing, I'd love to see that.

Also it's nice how Atlanta keeps us up to date with Prisoners.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

I watched 60 minutes Bobbyanna, loved the joint interview with the President and Hillary. They praise he had for her was warm geniune and spot on, I hope she runs in 2016.

Armstrong is scum, the threats that he made against people that testified against him is sick and yes criminal.

Lawrence's win was a surprise to me ans yes ZDT is getting a backlash from HW.

Argo winning is a joke, no way in hell was it the best ensemble.

Scott said...

"Argo winning is a joke, no way in hell was it the best ensemble. "

This might be slightly OT but I find it odd that Argo, Lincoln and Les Miz did not have lead actresses and ZDT did not have a lead actor. All of those pics were truly ensembles.

If there is a backlash by HW aganist ZDT then I find it just as tragic as the campaign set forth aganist Brokeback Mountain for best picture. So basically the Oscars mean nothing when it comes to artistic value.

A director should not have to explain any further than it is a depiction of a story which I believe both she and the screenwriter had said many times. Once again HW is full of a bunch of hypocrites.

bobbyanna said...

I found Argo very entertaining even though it's not my first choice for Best Picture. It has all the elements that make a film attractive to AMPAS voters, too. It's historic, but it's history lots of those voters can remember, and the narrative's easy to follow.

It's really well paced, well directed, well cast, & well acted. It has a happy ending, and Hollywood is prominently featured in the narrative.

I definitely see why it's popular in a way Lincoln may not be, or
ZD30. UV, I agree that Katherine Bigelow seemed to be unprepared to deal with questions about torture.

My personal favorite for Best Picture is Lincoln. (ZD30 is a close 2nd.) There are some fine films nominated that appeal to different sensibilities, but for me it just stands out.

The script, the cast, the cinematography, the authenticity of really transporting us back in time,I just thought the film was meticulously rendered...altho I wish it had ended with him walking down that hallway. : )

I'm still plowwing thru the nominated films.

Mary said...

I have only managed to see one nominated film Lincoln hope it was wins but it looks like Argo will probably win the oscar I didn't even watch the sag awards.

Sasha beat me to it :)

Scott, I don't think it's asking too much of art to be truthful. The problem with ZDT's torture scenes is that the implication is that the information gleaned was good and that it led to finding Bin Laden.

If that's true, then it should be shown. But there's no public evidence of that. And Bigelow should be able to say why she depicted things that way. She and the screenwriter are the ones who described the movie as journalism. When journalists get things wrong or introduce new evidence, they are questioned about it.

I don't think it invalidates the movie, but it is a legitimate question, one she has ducked.
