Event Fall

Event Spring 2017 - Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford recording Move on for the Sunday in the Park with George cast album:

It has been a busy autumn for Jake Gyllenhaal, with film festivals, screenings, conversations, presentations, perfume ads and more. And now an award.

Jake was given the Hollywood Film Awards Best Actor trophy for his performance as Jeff Bauman in Stronger. May it be the beginning of a fruitful awards season. We live in hope...

A beautiful speech by Jake. You can feel how much this experience has meant to him. I hope it's not the last time he gets the chance to give a speech for playing this role!

James was on SNL, which definitely helps. I feel like Jake is doing loads of 'conversations' (like SAG-AFTRA) but the general public probably won't see that. He needs to do more talk shows. Has he been on Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon, etc? As usual, his pr people are letting him, and us, down.

I also feel he needs more endorsement from his peers. Like how he did with Mudbound. I guess we'll see what happens on Monday with the Golden Globe nominations - I do believe he'll be nominated because the Best Actor category is bigger because it's split between drama and comedy, but if he isn't, his campaign may lose steam and then all bets are off for the Oscars.

I haven't actually seen any of the movies that are mentioned on the predictions list, so I can't say if some deserve it more than him but I thought he was incredible in Stronger.

PS. woke up to snow here in London! First snow this winter :)

"The Disaster Artist" is projected to be #5 at the box office this weekend (Boxoffice). As ususal it's a bit frontloaded as a new (semi-)wide release.

It bothers me that Jake campaigns for four months probably to no avail. On the other hand I don't think that an Oscar nomination or a snub would have much impact on his career. He's not an unknown entity in Hollywood anyway. It's certainly nice to have the prestige associated with an Oscar nomination. But if it doesn't happen it's not a major setback.

Monica said...

I cannot judge the performance of James because I have not seen it yet, but he has an advantage that is the role about an actor, many actors will identify with that. Hollywood loves movies that talk about them like Birdman and La La Land.
With box-office success, that's more of an advantage for him. He is the favorite to win the Globe for best actor in comedy.

Monica said...

I think so too, but drama is packed, the Golden Globe likes stars, they can nominate Denzel or Pattison in drama and snub Jake.

sorry for the double post.

Real Sal said...

GG noms will be announced 8.15am (Eastern) tomorrow. I have the day off, so I'll be at home hoping for the best.

I'm more nervous/excited about the SAG nominations on Wednesday.

bobbyanna said...

Now you're making me even more nervous! LOL! I think Jake's reputation is growing and so is his popularity but it seems like a "slow build" to me, which I think is very good. I think he's getting a lot more respect and is very well thought of. Didn't Hugh Jackman recently host a screening of Stronger? He has done the talk show circuit for Stronger even having Jeff either join him or go a day or two ahead of him in some cases. I think Tatiana did some too.

I think the Globes will look at the Call Me By Your Name actors and Tom Hanks. I don't know about Denzel, but I am wondering if Colin Farrell may surprise everyone with a nomination for a Globe. With the GGs the possibilities seem more ..."flexible." : ) I do believe The Post is going to do very well this yer. It's the climate for it.

Boston Film critics just announced their best actor choice. They normally skew towards films made in or about Boston. Jake wasn't the winner or the runner up. Losing all hope for anything except the golden globes.

UltraViolet said...

I never thought Boston would pick Jake. It's too obvious, and they'd get too much flak. They aren't brave enough.

I hope Jake gets in tomorrow, but I'm not counting on it. It's a shame that none of these critics' groups have even placed him as a runner-up. But then he won a lot of Nightcrawler, and we know how that ended up.

Love the Jingle Bells video.

Jake is unlucky, awards-wise. It doesn't make sense, but he's either not popular enough or there are outside factors for his lack of recognition. I hope it doesn't bother him as much as it bugs me!

Let's just sing and be merry. Forget all those critics!

Monica said...

Jake is unlucky, awards-wise.

I think the same thing. This was to be a weak year for actors, suddenly it became strong. Curious is that it's an Oscar-bait role as Redmayne's, but it seems the desire now is in another.

I think this will bother him because this time he is campaigning, but if he is snubbed tomorrow, I hope he will rest, take a vacation.

I don't know about outside factors, but I saw some time ago someone say that Jake takes himself too seriously, he takes it all too seriously, it may repel some people.

Anonymous said...

I think the fact that Jake produced Stronger and became friends with Jeff made him campaign harder than he has in previous year, he hasn't done this level of campaigning since nightcrawler. it's unfortunate. He deserves it so much for this performance but once again is overlooked. I agree that I hope it doesn't bother him as much as it bugs us!

Real Sal said...

Do you think it would make a difference if he got more involved in social media? I'd hate it, but maybe more of an interaction with fans will help his popularity.

I think I mentioned the other day that I was going to try get a friend to go see Stronger with me this week, and her reaction was 'nah, I hate oscar-bait movies. Looks desperate'. Obviously I didn't agree but maybe others feel the same way.

The movie itself is also hard to sell. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have watched it if it didn't involve Jake - I'm glad I did but life is hard, and people might not want this kind of entertainment. It's a bit too close to home. I feel the same about the ISIS movie.

Sorry if I'm being negative...it's 2am here and I can't sleep.

Here's hoping that we get some happy news re the GGs!

bobbyanna said...

Real Sal I don't think you're being negative. Stronger is a hard sell. When you tell someone it's about Jeff, they are not enthused about seeing it. It's definitely not LaLa Land. : )

And yet, I remember when James Franco made the 127 Hours movie about a guy trapped a mountain pass who chopped off his own arm, and got all kinds of buzz for it. I think it's about how Jake and his role are marketed in terms of any kind of awards campaign. I will say that unless he has a movie to promote he is usually very low key, and with Stronger being a movie he produced and the fact he and Jeff became so close he is more personally invested in this movie. I also think Riva is encouraging him to "go for it."

Sorry you can't sleep.

Monica said...

He is producer of Nightcrawler, but he didn't campaign for this movie because he was in the theater. Nobody expected that this movie would get the attention of the awards as it received. I guess even he didn't expect it because it's not the kind of film and role for the Oscars. People still talk about this movie and the character, I don't see anyone talking about who won that year.

maybe more of an interaction with fans will help his popularity.
But he doesn't like this interaction, he kind of sabotages himself with it. As I said, he takes himself very seriously this can repel.

I saw people loving the promo of Life. They saw another side of Jake, joking, people loved it. I've seen a lot of people say they didn't know he was funny, but some time later he's serious again.
I think the fact that he always has a movie at the end of the year with potential for Oscar can repel, as if that makes him look desperate. He should try to make other types of films, not just dramas.

Real Sal, I'm just going to see Stronger because of him.

UltraViolet said...

I think we are over-analyzing. Jake hasn't campaigned as much as some other folks, and they will be nominated. It's an unknowable combination of factors.

I think the only thing that will make a near-certainty for Jake is being involved in a movie that has awards buzz all around not just for his performance.

Social media isn't going to help him with awards/Oscar voters. It would be great if he could do more with it but I think he is unsure. I also think we are selling Jake short for all the acclaim he got for Stronger and for his popularity. There was some tumblr poll of the most popular actors and Jake was in the Top 30:

1. Tom Holland
2. Sebastian Stan −1
3. Chris Evans −1
4. Cole Sprouse
5. Tom Hiddleston −2
6. Jensen Ackles −2
7. Benedict Cumberbatch +2
8. Finn Wolfhard
9. Misha Collins −3
10. Bill SkarsgÄrd
11. Dylan O'Brien −3
12. Matthew Daddario +4
13. Jared Padalecki −2
14. Chris Pine
15. Kit Harington
16. Lin-Manuel Miranda −6
17. KJ Apa
18. Adam Driver −13
19. Martin Freeman
20. Ezra Miller
21. Harry Shum Jr.
22. Diego Luna
23. Chris Hemsworth
24. Henrik Holm
25. John Boyega −13
26. Tyler Posey
27. Jeffrey Dean Morgan
28. Robert Downey Jr.
29. Jake Gyllenhaal
30. Dan Stevens

Not many potential Oscar nominees on there. And Jake wasn't on it last year. So he's done something to make a bigger name for himself this year. (Numbers indicate movement up or down.)

I don't think taking a break would be a bad thing. But I don't pay much attention to the people who call everything Oscar bait and everything Jake does "thirsty."

bobbyanna said...

UV, I've never heard of some of these people! LOL!

Finn Wolfhard? Bill Skarsgard? K J Apa? Henrik Holm? Harry Shum, Jr.? Sorry, but I'm at a loss. I have no idea who they are. : )

Anonymous said...

Bill Skarsgaard is the star of It.

Monica said...

lol Bobbyana. Most of these actors are from TV series. Finn Wolfhard is from the Netflix Stranger Things series. Two others play gay characters in a series, fangirls love gay male characters with many sex scenes.
Tumblr is dominated by franchise actors and TV series, but it's good to see that jake has managed to get into that ranking. I have seen an increase in his fandom after Life, I think also because he is not problematic.

Many of these actors are more accessible to fans. It does not give the Oscar, but it helps to build a fanbase.

Real Sal said...

It's so hard not to over analyze. I was doing so well avoiding all the prediction sites! Sigh. Regardless of what happens this awards season, I do believe that his time will eventually come.

Is it bad that I completely forgot that Life happened this year? I remember all his other work but mind alway draws a blank with that movie. But I did love all the interviews that came from it.

Bobbyanna - snap! I recognize a lot of the names but have no clue what they've been in :)

While I'm disappointed for Jake I don't feel like this is the end of the world. There are so many great actors who never got any awards recognition until late in their careers, if at all.

bobbyanna said...

I think Jake deserves recognition for the brilliant work he did in Stronger. So I'm disappointed. So what if it's described as an "Oscar bait" role. I don't care. It wouldn't be the first time a role...or a movie is described as "Oscar bait." When I look at that list of nominees, I can't help but think of how very predictable it is.

BlueJean said...

Disappointed :( And I haven't even seen 'Stronger' yet, because of my move.

Congrats to Maggie, though. Maybe she can give Jake some good advice ;)

Real Sal said...

I'm hoping there's some love from his SAG peers but not holding my breath. This is such a bummer. I hope he's not taking it too hard and is celebrating Maggie's nomination.

BlueJean said...

You wonder how he copes with it. I know he always says awards aren't important, but someone like Michelle Williams gets nominated for nearly everyting she does (the new Meryl Streep?) and I don't consider her to be such a fabulous actress.

Sigh.

I saw a tweet today that summed evreything up. Jake just like Amy Adams must fight a bear like Leo did to get recognized.

But at least Amy Adams has been nominated for the Oscars - 5 times.

That one time Jake was nominated seems ridiculous by now - and it's over ten years ago. How come he gets overlooked again and again - and again?

Jake hasn't starred in a "Best Picture" nominated movie since "Brokeback Mountain". That's definitely a big handicap in the Oscar race.

This. He would only be nominated without a movie if he was a big name as happened to Jeff Bridges, but he is not. He needs to star in a best film.

UltraViolet said...

Well, another list of nominees, another bummer. Love Jeff Bauman's post! I'm pissed but not surprised. I'll hold out some hope for the SAG Awards but only a little.

What I said last night applies: Jake needs to be in an across-the-board prestige film, apparently, to be awarded. It sucks, because I've seen Roman J Israel, and in no way did Denzel give a better performance nor is it even half the movie Stronger is. And other actors are nominated in lesser movies. People just don't want to award Jake, for some reason.

About the tumblr names: My point exactly, Bobbyanna! Being a social media star works for some things but it has very little to do with awards.

EFK said...

What's really insulting is Ansel Elgort got a nom for Baby Driver. It did okay at the Box Office and got good reviews but Jake and Stronger got outstanding reviews.

Not that Roman J Israel was a comedy but they sure could have put Denzel in the AE spot if they wanted to nominate him.

Sigh....

UltraViolet said...

One of the (many) things that bugs me about this is the assumption that Stronger and Jake's performance are just an attempt for Oscar glory and not an attempt to tell a human, moving story. As the Variety woman says in her tweet, did they even watch the movie?

I wonder if they should have held Stronger for later release. Among all the other issues, I think it suffered from lack of attention.

Also, I'm tired of people calling Jake the new Leo. Leo at least got fucking nominated for awards. I'm also even more annoyed with the SITPWG producers for withdrawing Sunday from Tony consideration. Not that I think Jake would have won, but he would have been nominated.

Probably...

Some tweets:

UV, it's complete bullshit! I'm more pissed today then yesterday. I don't think any of the HFPA saw it. Plus as you said he isn't Leo because he can't even get nominated! Ugh...don't know how Jake takes it.

I do agree with your point about the movie coming out too early. I think if they waited for October or November it would have done so much better and stayed in peoples minds. It got such amazing reviews and if they had waited a bit longer I think the box office would have come with it.

Someone posted a pic Jake on Instagram with a man who looked like his father (from the back) at a restaurant yesterday. I hope it was his dad and that he has support around him.

The entertainment shows mentioned a bunch of snubs, and there were quite a few, but none mentioned Jake. So unfair.

UltraViolet said...

Jake was even snubbed on the Variety poll of worst snub.

I think the near-universal praise for Stronger caught the studio off guard. They weren't prepared for it to be a critical hit. Since they didn't expect it, they didn't plan for it. And the box office and awards prospects have suffered from it. It sucks.

From the writer of the script Jake announced for the Black List:

Thanks to @theblcklst and those that voted for bringing some visibility to my favorite (and definitely weirdest) script. Jake, what's good! Semi-important update: my text tone is now Jake Gyllenhaal saying "Mattson Tomlin."

On twitter today:

coworker saw jake gyllenhaal at the dmv and i love that i know that he’s renewing his license bc his birthday is a week after mine 😗

Jake was also at the concert performance of Damn Yankees last night. Maggie was one of the performers.

From w new interview with Donald Mowat:

AF: I also wanted to touch on some things from “Stronger.” How different is it moving from a Sci-Fi film like “Blade Runner” and then coming back to the real world of “Stronger?”

DM: Apples and oranges. It’s so different. More than anything it was so meaningful. It’s a smaller project but it was incredible. Jake Gyllenhaal, I just can’t say enough about him. He’s the most collaborative actor I’ve ever met and that’s inspiring. The movie didn’t have a lot of money and there’s a challenge in that. There are moments in the movie that Jake is so supportive, with David Gordon Green, they let me do my thing. The one thing in makeup that I’ve noticed is that more and more people want to tell me what to do, and I don’t know when that happened. But working with Jake, he was so into it.

When I was researching and presenting my ideas to Jake and David, that Jeff Bauman’s eyes had changed in tone and color. Apparently, this can happen after catastrophic events. That’s the kind of thing that Jake would want me to figure out. Even though Jake has these incredible eyes, we had to go in on this. There’s a shot when they’re putting him in the wheelchair that his eyes look like coal, and everyone thought that it made him Jeff Bauman. Jeff’s mother came to set and even she thought it was incredible. It’s a subtle makeup technique that can have so much power and influence in how they responded to Jake.

AF: What about the recreation of the bomb?

DM: It was something that we were extremely sensitive about. We were working with so many people who had been there, it was a very emotional atmosphere. There was a sense of quiet and respect, because of the event itself. We also had the medical teams help us to approve of Jake’s makeup to make it accurate.

AF: You had a medical team consult on his makeup?

DM: Oh yeah, not just for the injuries, but for everything after. Especially when you see Jeff on opioids, or in the hospital. He should look a sticky, yellowy grey. It’s a surgical look and it touched me. I kept Tatiana [Maslany] in a mirror look to Jake, one that shows how she’s stressed, exhausted, and fatigued look.

AF: Did you actually meet Jeff during the filming of “Stronger?”

DM: He’s an incredible guy. On a personal note, I had some health issues this year, a big sort of shocking event in my life. Well when I saw him at Toronto, Jeff was so concerned about me. I think that speaks to what kind of person he is, that he’s so concerned with everyone else. This is a guy on titanium legs whose life was forever changed. Yet, he was so concerned about me. It was deeply touching and it will always be an amazing moment in my life.

Also noticed the snubbed snub. Was on a few gossip blogs today and loads of comments about other snubs and I think I saw Jake's name only a couple times. It's really disheartening. I think the movie lost momentum a while ago and people completely forgot.

Crazy to think Christopher Plummer got a nomination for a movie that was still being edited 2 weeks ago. I hope that's the HFPA giving Spacey the finger.

EFK, that does look like Jake's dad from the back. Maybe he's in town for Jake's birthday...or moral support / Maggie's celebration.

I chose to stay mad about the golden globes snub yesterday since I'll be mad all over again tomorrow after the sag announcement. Eventhough I'm expecting it, it still gets me mad.

OK. I know that was corny, but still.....

bobbyanna said...

Also, thinking about all this awards season anxiety, I believe the Best Actor category is usually pretty competitive. It's a rare year when it isn't, simply by virtue of the fact that historically, most strong roles have been written for men, by men. So IMO it is always more likely to be competitive than not. And clearly, there are easily 7 or 8 performances that are very good to excellent in that category.

So winnowing them down to the top five becomes more of a political exercise than anything else. While Jake is, IMO, well liked, and he is getting more respect with every project, I just don't feel like he has the muscle or the big, important friends with muscle to make the more influential industry people feel like they really need to vote for him. They can love his work for days, but there seems to be nothing compelling them to do something.

Back when Brokeback Mountain came out, Jake and Heath were swept up in the "cause" the political mommentum of the whole discussion about Gay Rights. and Ang Lee being the director sure helped. But since then, even though Jake is growing, getting better, and churning out one spectacular performance after another, there is no sense of urgency about selecting him as a nominee.

That's my analysis of it anyway. I hope I'm not being too confusing and certainly don't want to be negative. Jake continues to create a body of work that is so damned impressive, that one of these days they'll do an AFI tribute to Jake Gyllenhaal and they'll be embarrassed at how great he is and how dumb they are. : )

Monica said...

The initial promo of the film was to sell the film as a love story. It made me think that it would be like The Theory of Everything, but with Jeff's divorce, the promo focused on the main character's drama, that may have repelled everyone. Jeff is not a famous guy, what happened was recent.
Ana Maria Bahiana from HFPA said on Twitter that she was happy that the film's disgrace of the week was not nominated, she was certainly talking about Sronger and that other Andrew Garfield's movie.

I hope that's the HFPA giving Spacey the finger.

An actor should be nominated because he deserves it and not for politics. Kevin already lost a lot, so he doesn't need it.

there is no sense of urgency about selecting him as a nominee.

But why Michelle is nominated every year? It's because of Heath?

bobbyanna said...

Monica, why would you think Ana Maria Bahiana from HFPA was referring to Stronger when she said 'the film's disgrace of the week' I can think of potentially several other situations that would merit a word as strong as "disgrace." and nothing at all about Stronger that would elicit that response. I'm missing something here.

bobbyanna said...

OK.I went to her twitter account and I think it has something to do with interpretation or whatever, but in any event her comment was very callous. She was saying, if I'm interpreting it correctly the gist of what she said, and I'm paraphrasing here, is that she was glad that movies where the protagonists suffered some tragedy, which were obviously Oscar bait, weren't nominated. Someone said, like Stronger or Breathe? And she said "bingo."

So it wouldn't surprise me at all to discover that she hasn't even seen the movie if she is so dismissive of it. I don't agree with her, I don't think her opinion is necessarily shared by a lot of people, and I think it was a callous thing to say. Whatever.

Yes, I agree that Jeff's divorce may have affected one of the marketing angles, but I thought the way it played out in the film was handled beautifully, and while they definitely had to change some things, I don't think the divorce had that big an effect on marketing.

They had more than enough to work with. My quarrel is with the way they released it. They critical acclaim for Stronger was so great, that they should have done a wider release to open it than they did. They might have gotten a little more mileage out of the positive buzz.

Diana said...

Stronger made 137.000 USD at the box office in the UK last weekend. It made the no.1 spot for new releases, but there was no real competition I think.... I hope it does well in the UK!

Jake was even snubbed on the Variety poll of worst snub.

Yep, and as we´ve all seen by now, not just there. He wasn´t even mentioned on a lot of websites that posted about the GG. It surprised me every now and then, because some of them have been praising Stronger when it came out.

I found this on twitter:

@iforsure: im slightly bitter about gyllenhaal, feel like STRONGER was considered predictable without even being seen! His performance was excellent, as was the script

reply by @jenelleriley
Yep. Jake Gyllenhaal is consistently taken for granted.

That made me smile. I have actually not seen a lot of posts by people who have seen Stronger saying that the movie is bad or not award-worthy.

I generally get angry about people saying a movie is "Oscar bait". Who gives a sh*t about that. To me, a movie is good or it isn´t. So if it was made to get someone an Oscar or GG? I don´t care. I invest time and money to see it, and let´s be honest, just because a movie does get awards doesn´t mean that I like it!

I have been brought up this way: as long as you haven´t tried/seen something you´re not entitled to judge! Simple as! People should just shut up, really, as long as they haven´t seen a movie.

Anonymous said...

I think for Oscar noms it'll go to: Oldman/DDL/Chalamet/Hanks/Franco.

Maybe best for our own sanity to avoid getting too invested in these awards and just be pleasantly surprised if it does happen.

It's frustrating though and confusing as to why he's always on the fringe.

Last year there were blind items (of course not reliable) about Jake from 2015. That he was having an affair with a wealthy celebrity's wife. Many commenters guessed Jake - some saying Harvey's wife, or Jessica Seinfeld. Now obviously this is all rumors, but if true, what if someone behind the scenes has enough clout to 'blacklist' him? I know it's a massive leap but these things can and do happen.

Anonymous said...

Wouldn't make sense if it were Harvey's wife when he himself has been blacklisted. Don't see Seinfeld having that much pull in the film community but who knows. It's a blind item those are always suspicious.

Anonymous said...

The blind item came out well over a year ago, before the Weinstein scandal. Maybe it lingered, lol!

EFK said...

Just sucks is all I can say...

I agree with 11:07 AM, it will probably be Oldman/DDL/Chalamet/Hanks/Franco.

I love Denzel, great actor, but nominating this performance for so many awards?? No.

Just really shitty...

bobbyanna said...

Wow. I'm very disappointed in SAG. I thought if there was a shot it would be with SAG. I saw Get Out and Daniel Kaluuya was nothing special. A very unremarkable job. I don't think Daniel Kaluuya or James Franco will make the cut for the Oscar nominations. I think they will be replaced by DDL & Tom Hanks. It all seems very predictable. I adore Denzel, but from what I've read there is nothing impressive about his performance or that movie. So Timothee Chalamet, Tom Hanks, DDL, Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington will probably be the people who snag the Oscar nominations.

I don't think Jake has been blacklisted. I just don't feel like anyone feels compelled to rank him in their top three or four or five performances. Bet he gets a lot of comments when he runs into people about "gee I thought you did a great job. One of the best I've seen all year! Blah, blah, blah."

He needs to make some different choices of projects. South Paw and Stronger were brilliant performances, but were not going to gain any attention for different reasons.

I too adore Denzel but had no idea he even had a movie out until the GG nom! Like, how does that even work. I've just read reviews and they aren't great.

Anonymous said...

I don't know about Rio. Plus everyone said the same thing about Jake working with Jean-Marc Valle and Tom Ford, that they would help get him awards. I'm not really sure what would work at this point.

Hagen said...

Bet he gets a lot of comments when he runs into people about "gee I thought you did a great job.

I agree, he's building a lot of goodwill. It might pay off in future award seasons.

UltraViolet said...

The blind item explanation is preposterous. It's also as good as any other explanation.

I feel like Jake has built all the good will he can. I wonder if he has built bad will. I can't believe it, but it is baffling to me that critics, peers and journalists do not think his performances are worthy of recognition.

Nice to see the THR list.

I would love to see a top-level entertainment journalist do a story on Jake's year. What other actor has put together a year like this:

1. Sunday in the Park
2. Okja
3. Stronger

Throw Life in there to show the range of roles Jake created. Life wasn't a success, and Okja was controversial. But add those in to the two acclaimed roles (SITPWG and Stronger) and it's a tribute to Jake's range and commitment. I just think he should be recognized.

UltraViolet said...

This is sad, and puts awards snubs in perspective:

Following a handful of box office disappointments, Bold Films will be laying off roughly half of its 14 employees. The layoffs began this past Friday and are the result of underwhelming box office grosses including the Jake Gyllenhaal film “Stronger.” Sources also say Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux” has been delayed. Lisa Zambri, SVP of production and development, has been let go while Jon Oakes will remain on in the same position. More to come…

Will also affect Jake's production company.

Real Sal said...

Yikes, I hadn't thought of the ramifications. I guess my initial reaction was sympathy for Jake personally, it didn't cross my mind how this might effect him as a businessman.

I feel bad for the Bold people. And right before Xmas :(

From Variety article about Bold Films:

"Following a handful of box office disappointments, Bold Films will be laying off roughly half of its 14 employees.

The layoffs began this past Friday and are the result of underwhelming box office grosses, including the Jake Gyllenhaal film “Stronger.” Sources also say that production on Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux” has been delayed. Natalie Portman had been attached to star in the drama about the life of a pop star, but her involvement is now in question. It’s unclear if her schedule will be free when shooting on the film begins."

Wonder how many of Jake's upcoming projects under his production company will suffer now.

When I think of Stronger I feel like this could be a movie that will be more appreciated over time. The Boston marathon bombing is still quite fresh and not everyone really sits down and does some research on a movie before deciding to watch it or not.

There is so much terror (political or actual terror) going on at the moment that I do understand that some people just don´t want to watch anything to do with that kind of topic. It´s a love story etc., yes, but it still starts with a terrorist attack, even though you don´t get to see a lot of that aspect.

I wonder... maybe Patriots Day made it more difficult for Stronger to be successfull, box office and awards alike. "Oh, not another movie about the Boston marathon bombing...." and put aside.

Anyway, all the attempts in analyzing the why and how and everything won´t change the results. For me, I´ve already accepted that Stronger won´t get any recognition awards-wise.

The reviews in the UK are pretty mixed, at least by what I´ve read so far. The Guardian´s review for example is not good, 2 out of 5 stars. I haven´t read enough reviews to say what the majority is. One thing that really bugs me is that the release dates are pretty far from each other, in Germany for example in July!! They should be closer, it would help to keep the movie in discussions, fans/moviegoers interact internationally and some websites do pick up reviews from other countries too. It does get my attention when I hear something about a movie from various sources.

I need to get some sleep. I hate politics in showbiz. All that who-knows-who and who-to-best-be-friends-with..... I´m so sick of it. I don´t have any trust in awards. I don´t think it´s about honoring the best. It´s a bit naive to think it is which is a real shame because that´s basically what it should be.

UltraViolet said...

Speaking of politics, we in the US at least have the Alabama victory to feel good about. Much closer than it should have been but at least some reason prevailed.

The Bold News is very sad for all involved.

Tips on how to feel better about this awards nonsense: Don't go to AwardsWatch. I've removed it from my bookmarks and it has improved my quality of life. I'll miss getting news there but I can't go through another year reading about every other actor being nominated/winning/etc.

Diana said...

Oh I haven´t seen the posting about Bold films. That´s really bad. I kept an eye on the box office results and it worried me. We´re now at 5.8m, I hope that by the end of next year it will have made enough money to at least cover the costs.

Another reason why I don´t like the fact that Stronger is released that late in some countries.... I´m not sure how much streaming and blurays will make. Is there a statistic for that, too? I never checked....

EFK said...

Wow really sad news about Bold. Really sucks especially at the holidays.

she hasn't even seen the movie if she is so dismissive of it.

From what I know of her, she certainly saw the movie. I don't always agree with what she says, but she does her job very well. If I'm not wrong, she wasn't a fan of Redmayne in The Theory of Everything.

Quick history. She asked for a photo for Jake when he went to do rehearsal for the GG, but he refused.

UltraViolet said...

Well, then, he definitely didn't deserve a nomination.

Monica said...

lol, UV. Jake should be more accessible, would be something that would benefit him.

"It was just announced that Adam Driver is taking Jake's place in Burn This on Broadway."

No, it wasn't announced that "Adam is taking Jake's place". In fact they all mention it's another prodution. Different producer, actor, theater. The common denominator is the director who possibly owns the rights for Lanford Wilson’s play.

VARIETY: “Burn This,” about a romance that develops after a tragic death, had previously been on tap for a separate Broadway production that would have starred Jake Gyllenhaal, but that staging was scuttled. The upcoming incarnation comes from producer David Binder, whose Broadway credits include “Hedwig” and the revival of “Of Mice and Men” that starred James Franco.

PLAYBILL: Michael Mayer will direct the first Broadway revival of Lanford Wilson’s play in 2019. Jake Gyllenhaal was initially attached to a production set to premiere this year. Burn This was originally scheduled to return to Broadway in 2017 directed by Mayer and starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Pale. Producers Stacey Mindich and Jessica R. Jenen were attached to the revival, set to be the first production in the newly renovated Hudson Theatre. In the end, Gyllenhaal inaugurated the space with another production: the revival of Sunday in the Park with George.

TWITTER: Wasn't there talk of Jake Gyllenhaal doing Burn This at some point in NYC - would that be a different production?

I was really sad about the snub from SAG and GG, and I have almost no hope for the Oscars but I also think that Jake would prefer that Stronger did well on box office to getting all those nominations. He said that he had lots of projects in development with nine stories and he probably needs other companies like bold films to co-finance them and with Stronger not performing well at the box office its a major setback for future projects, I guess that is what worry's him the most at this point.
He can have all the love in the world for his work, have high praise from critics but the fact is in the end his company and the others who finance need to have financial return. Let´s hope in the long run stronger can cover at least the production cost.
If I were Jake I would Know what to do to clear my mind, I would go away to spend new years in a tropical paradise like he did last year ;)

Paula, I agree with what you've written.

From a recent interview with Deadline: I brought the film to Bold Films, who finances my production company, and all of a sudden we were producing it too. So I haven’t slept for two years. I’m reading this story, then meeting Jeff, and wanting to be involved on a really core, rudimentary level. It has become this child of mine.
...
But I wouldn’t want to dismiss my financial partners, because I think oftentimes we dismiss the people who provide that support. A company like Bold—Michel Litvak and Gary Michael Walters—when we made Nightcrawler, they understood the way I saw films, and they saw them very similarly. They supported me. I am nothing without them, in a sense. They were the ones who, when I gave them Stronger, even as many people were scared of it, they were like, “Yes. We’re in.”

Diana said...

I also agree with you, Paula. As much as I love to see good movies I´m also aware of the fact that they have to make enough money to cover the production costs AND more so that another project can be financed. Showbusiness creates a lot of jobs. Every time I look at the end credits of a movie I´m like WOW, look at the amount of people who worked on this!

Happy birthday, Jake! It's awfully late but still his day of birth, so I can make my wish for him: to always evolve but never change what makes him special, that melange of intensity, curiosity and shyness, quirkiness and wit, blunt and polite, serious and giddy.

Being "professionally successful" is awfully relative when one's praised performance in a well reviewed movie is completely ignored, and another's mixed reviewed performance in a panned movie is nominated for GG and SAG. So "frell" the Hollywood system and its cliques: I can't wait to see Jake's future films, especially the ones with Audiard, Guadagnino and Gilroy, and plays or musicals! I'm getting the feeling he's planning a musical with some dancing on Broadway.

Has anyone heard of this account msbcmc? I have been trying to investigate and I’m pretty sure it is a fake account, they have blocked me because I asked her questions. Supposedly she works for Jake in some way but acts like a friend but also is supposed to be married and have 4 kids but her account never shows her with them. Her face is also blocked a bit but after looking at it it seems her face is always different, a couple pictures will be the same and a couple others but it’s not the same person. Someone on twitter said fhey saw Jake at Reformation in nyc and on that same day this account on four square took a picture of her being at Reformation. She supposedly went to Harvard and works for all these big time companies but when I would see her type things it looked like broken English at times! I’m so confused, can this account be fake?? Lots of snow and ice and scary traffic conditions to navigate. Like...1 degree Farenheit and then it went up to...7 degrees! So after three days of visiting with my brother and hos family, I jumped back on a plane and came back to Atlanta which is my new home...and discovered that on New Year's Eve temps down here will be in the teens and 20's. But at least we won't have the Arctic conditions Michigan is experiencing. I ate all the wrong things and loved it, and had a great time. Hope to try to catch up on some movies this week. : )

Hope you have a great time, Real Sal!!! I don't know if you're a fan of italian food, but Lysdia Batianich has nice place for pasta on 46th street called Becco's. She also has Felidia which is way expensive. Becco's is more reasonably priced and very good quality & service. Becco's is in the theatre district.

Of course if you are being Jake-centric, there's ABC Kitchen not too far from Union Square, but make a reservation like...NOW. It's casual. I strongly urge you to try it. It's not ridiculously expensive and the food is really good. One of my favorite places is Bubby's. It serves the best breakfast at 1 AM you will ever have in NYC. ( Well...I like it!) I dream of Bubby's Blueberry pancakes.: ) Go to the Bubby's on Hudson Street in Tribeca.

Union Square Cafe! Love it. great food.

YOuo can google these to check out their websites and menus. Becco's is the only one that's sort of Theatre district/midtown. The rest are in the Tribeca SoHo area in general.

I'm sure others will have a few more suggestions.

There are two restaurants that I can highly recommend:

charlie bird

I´ve been there once for lunch and once for dinner and I really loved it. It´s on 5 King Street

Another one that I loved is Bar Pitti on 268 6th Ave Greenwich Village (next Metro station Houston St). It´s an Italian restaurant and I can assure you it´s very authentic Italian food. The only "downside" is, that they take no reservations and it´s cash only! It´s defo worth waiting for a table, but I suppose at this time of the year it might be quite cramped. Some consider the staff to be rude, I can´t say that. Italians can be loud and energetic, that´s part of their dna and not meant to offend people. It´s a very lively place and we loved the atmosphere and the love and passion for food that was evident there.

I will go back to those two restaurants for sure! Sadly I didn´t have more time to explore more places, I would be of more help with restaurants in London *lol*.

Enjoy your trip, Real Sal!!

Jake and more stars prepare for New Years!

Jake being snubbed for awards doesn't make his performance in Stronger less moving and heartbreaking, or his Broadway musical debut less stunning. He gave us two amazing unforgettable performances, a hysterically funny one, and a press tour that left us in stitches. He gave his all to playing George, gave himself completely to playing Jeff, and in being his friend.

Tonight, when I'm gonna make my 12 wishes, for each month, one wish will be for him. He deserves more respect, recognition and a pinch of luck.

That's a shame. I, too, had some hope - not much, but some. The British are usually very into Jake. On another forum someone said that 'Stronger' "came and went here [in the UK] without any publicity and it disappeared really quickly."

It was more or less the same here. I can't recall a (recent) Jake movie that got so little attention. Even 'Enemy' did better IMO - or at least that one got people thinking (and talking) ;)

EFK said...

I too was hoping the Baftas might give him some love. :(

Well, he is nominated for the Critics Choice Awards which are this Thursday (the 11th). Hoping he will attend the awards.

Variety also saying Stronger/Jake should be getting more notice.

"4. “Stronger”
Domestic box office: $4.2 million
Jake Gyllenhaal embarked on an onscreen metamorphosis to portray Jeff Bauman, the hero who lost both his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013. It’s hard to know when to release an independent movie nowadays. The summer is oversaturated with blockbusters, and the fall had “It,” a surprise horror hit. “Stronger,” which opened in late September, only managed expand to 645 screens. In the end, the movie may have arrived a little too early for awards season, where Gyllenhaal should be more of a contender in the best actor race."

W Magazine does still give Jake attention though. Scroll all the way to the bottom, pic of him in blue coat.

"36/38
Jake Gyllenhaal in Stronger

"My dad always told me, 'The job of an artist is to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.' That’s always in my mind. It’s why I’m attracted to projects that are maybe going to illuminate something to you about yourself. It’s always a little frightening because you don’t know what you’re going to discover."

Jake Gyllenhaal wears a Pringle of Scotland jacket; Frame T-shirt."

And he was seen with Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer. She posted on her Instagram.

Diana said...

On another forum someone said that 'Stronger' "came and went here [in the UK] without any publicity and it disappeared really quickly."

That was my impression from afar. The focus seemed to be on the US market, but when it comes to marketing I am not sure what they wanted to achieve. Maybe they see Stronger more for TV and not for the big screen and only screened it in a limited number of theaters to spread the word and the true goal is to make most of the money with DVD/bluray-sales and maybe contracts with tv broadcasting? I have no idea... but I could imagine that it could be easier to get an audience this way with this type of movie.

I remember a posting on instagram or twitter, someone wrote she had just heard "Boston marathon bombing" in the beginning and didn´t bother to take a closer look at the story at first. She thought that there was enough terror out there in real life right now and didn´t want to spend her time watching anything to do with that on the big screen, too. She eventually changed her mind because of some tweets that she read and now thinks the movie is great.

I wonder how many times this or something similar happened...

Anonymous said...

I have no clue what their goal was. Surely when you make a movie, the only thing you want for it is to do well? It got exellent reviews, but it seems it was completely ignored by the general public - and already completely forgotten, too.

From the article:

"Dear Academy: Don’t Overlook These Great Performances

Members of the motion picture Academy now have ballots in hand. Presumably many of them are reading these very words. So it feels like something of a duty to whisper a few suggestions, particularly as the awards season can so quickly be reduced to the same handful of names and titles.

First and foremost, there are a few contenders that seemed strong coming into the season, but have somehow been all but forgotten. Take Jake Gyllenhaal in “Stronger.” Here is one of the year’s most critically acclaimed films (93% on Rotten Tomatoes), dealing in a well-worn, Oscar-friendly genre (a biopic centered on a disabled person who beats the odds), featuring another great turn from an actor who has delivered a number of awards-caliber performances lately that have gone unrecognized by the Academy (“Prisoners,” “Nightcrawler,” “End of Watch”). What’s it going to take to put his name on the ballot?"

"Wildlife" will premiere next week on Saturday. There's a short synopsis on the Sundance Film Festival website. The movie has a runtime of 104 minutes.

The book by Richard Ford isn't particularly exciting, I must say. However I feel the book provides useful source material for a directorial debut. It's not overly complex. Has anyone else read the book?

Anonymous said...

I also read the book and didnt find the material all that interesting and the character Jake plays was absent through a large portion of the book(though that could have easily been changed in the movie so he has more scenes-hopefully). look forward to seeing a trailer to get an idea how close they kept it to the story.

Hagen said...

According to the Sundance website Carey Mulligan is the standout in the movie. The synopsis suggests that the movie stays close to the book.

Anonymous said...

Nowhere in the Sundance presentation is written that Carey is the standout. The description goes: "Carey Mulligan delivers one of her finest performances as a complex woman whose self-determination and self-involvement disrupt the values and expectations of the 1960s nuclear family", suggesting the focus is on her exclusively, her point of view being the most developed, but no superlative adjectives are used.

It seems the movie is good, fine but not outstanding. Which is perfectly fine since not everything has to be poised for awards, and not getting one's hopes up is a blessing in disguise.

Not fine though is that apparently, going by his name being credited last, Jake's part is even more diminished then expected. Seems that Jake did the movie as a favor to Paul, to help a friend direct a movie. My hope is that someday Paul or another one of his movie business friends will return the favor and the loyalty. It could be Dan Gilroy or Luca Guadagnino, whose film with Jake I'm putting the most trust in.

Didn't Jake already state that he was doing Wildlife as a favor? That he offered to help Paul financially through his production company (him and Riva are listed as producers) then Paul asked if he would also star in the film. I don't see an issue with his role being small or being credited last. He doesn't have to the lead in every film.

You could tell during filming that Jake wasn't the star. He didn't even film a full two weeks. He was finished filming before Thanksgiving and it continued filming into December. The story is mostly about the boy and the mother. it might be like Mudbound where no one is a real standout.

The awesomest of movie titles!

Omega Underground‏ @OmegaUGround
EXCLUSIVE: Dan Gilroy’s Next Film Is Titled ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’

According to Omega Underground(??): "the film’s title will be Velvet Buzzsaw and begins filming on March 19th in Los Angeles."

We knew they were planning to start shooting in March (Jake said so in a few Q&As and Dan mentioned an early date: March 2), and I'm loving the title that brings to mind Lynch's "Blue Velvet" and Haynes "Velvet Goldmine", yet still waiting for official confirmation from Variety, THR or Deadline.

In the meantime, feast your eyes, fellow GBers, to Every Image From Jake Gyllenhaal's 2018 GQ Australia Shoot, the gift that keeps on giving.

Leo has gotten so big! What a beautiful dog

Lot´s of news today saying Reeves and Warner already offered the Batman role to Jake and he will be the next Batman in case Ben Affleck leaves which is the most likely scenario. Do you think it is just more rumors or that we are close to a confirmation?
The GQ photos, bless them!
On a personal note, my new years wishlist of traveling is already close to come true, going in March to Peru and Bolivia for a month.

Variety : Variety Studio at Sundance Sets Interviews With Top Festival Stars

Variety has unveiled a full program for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. In addition to being one of the festival’s official media sponsors, the entertainment news outlet will once again present the Variety Studio, featuring video interviews of top festival talent.

The Variety Studio, in collaboration with AT&T and DirecTV, will be housed in the DirecTV Lodge presented by AT&T and will include interviews with ... Jake Gyllenhaal (“Wildlife”). The video interviews will be posted on Variety.com during the festival.

Thanks, Hagen. Good to know he will be there for certain. Waiting for the interviews.

LA Times film critic about this year's Sundance selection:

This year, the best of the dramatic films were stronger than usual, including the following:

— "Wildlife." An exceptionally sensitive portrait of a marriage headed off the rails, beautifully acted by Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal and impeccably directed by actor Paul Dano.

The theatrical release for Stronger has been preponed to April 19th in Germany. I hope I´m going to be able to see it on the big screen once more, I don´t think it´s going to be a wide release... just selected theaters. Just a gut feeling.

The bluray comes out on April 2nd in the UK. Since I am not interested in the dubbed version I am seriously thinking of ordering it...

How much do you guys agree on this list?

New pics of Jake in Soho

He looks so much younger clean shaven (not that he looks old otherwise...you know what I mean!)

@ Diana: that German dubbing is horrible, isn't it?! I'm so glad we have subtitles!

I'll be ordering the UK DVD / bluRay as well - just like I did with 'Nightcrawler' and 'Southpaw'.

A prominent film critic praises "Wildlife":

Kenneth Turan for the Los Angeles Times: A look at Sundance Film Festival's stronger than usual 2018 lineup

Thanx everyone for posting all this info. I´m still so much into Stronger that I cannot get my head around the fact that promotion for Wildlife is about to take off!

BJ, I was used to dubbed movies all my life. Watching movies/tv series in the original language started with Dr. Who actually, because it was broadcasted in English, and without subtitles for quite some time. I always struggled with accents and with the speed and mumbling and everything. I could sometimes simply not understand what was being said. When I started to get really interested in Jake´s work I watched tons of interviews and at some point I was so used to his voice that it felt odd to hear someone elses´ voice speaking his lines, and I also got used to different accents due to watching so many interviews.

I always thought that acting has to do with your whole body and all senses included so speaking the lines in a studio, even if that is done by the actor himself, can never recreate the absolute same situation. Depending on the state your body is in the moment (tense, relaxed etc.), it does affect the way your voice sounds like, so watching movies in the original language really changed the whole experience for me.

There are a couple of cinemas in Cologne that screen undubbed movies, I hope one of them will screen Stronger!

Ah!

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, was in limited release in theaters, but just didn’t catch on at the box office, despite stellar acting and name recognition.

Lieberman said there are a number of reasons and mentioned marketing and distribution strategies.

Here is more:

Q&A at Palm Springs International Film Festival with Todd Lieberman and Tatiana Maslany

I think there has to be a video clip somewhere but I haven´t searched after that yet.

Diana, here in Portugal movies are always with subtitles, even on tv everything is subtitled, the only exception is with animated movies for children but there´s always the dubbed version and the original to chose. I don´t understand why Stronger has such different release dates in Europe, here it was in November and we it´s a small country, it doesn't make sense.

"Wildlife" is doing well with critics:

Wish Jake had been around for the interviews but I am glad he was there for the "Wildlife" premiere. Overall, good reviews.

Heath Ledger has been gone 10 years today. Heartbreaking. Thinking of Jake, Michelle and Matilda.

Still miss him. Will never forget that day.

It is unfathomable that it's been 10 years. A very sad day, with ripples we're still feeling.

I´m thinking about Heath and Jake all the time. I haven´t seen much of Heath´s work, but I very clearly remember the Joker!

Not a SINGLE nomination for Stronger at the Adademy Awards. I did expect it but am still disappointed.

UltraViolet said...

The triumph of the ordinary. None of the Best Actor nominees did anything more special than Jake's performance in Stronger. It really is a shame. A farce.

bobbyanna said...

I still need to see Ladybird Phantom Thread and the Shape of Water. I no longer expect anything from Awards season. But I'm still pissed off that Jake's work got ignored.he was brilliant and nothing else they've nominated comes close. Nothing.

BlueJean said...

I wonder how Jake feels. He always says awards aren't important to him, but surely he must have his own thoughts about 'Stronger' being completely ignored by both the general public and the Academy. And why is Meryl Streep nominated for the millionth time? She doesn't need it anymore :(

My aunt “took a bath with Jake Gyllenhall last night” so she’s definitely living her best life

bobbyanna said...

BJ, I think he would feel bad mostly for Jeff's sake and for Bold Films having to do lay offs in part because the box office for Stronger was so anemic. But also disappointment for the film being ignored during awards season, too. Jake's only human, so maybe feeling a little wounded, but if he feels any deeper feelings I would imagine it's more for the sake of others involved in the project, and less for himself.

Diana said...

I couldn´t have put it any better, bobbyanna. I remember an interview which is not that old I think.... he said something like that he´s learned over time that it sometimes takes a while until a movie finds it´s audience (I think they talked about the delayed success of "Donnie Darko"). So I hope he´s not taking it TOO bad but I believe that it does affect him more than it did/would with other movies.

A few weeks into the release of Stronger I was thinking that it could really take a while, maybe a few years, until it would really be appreciated. There have always been concerns that it might be too early for this story to be told, and I could totally imagine that this was the case for some moviegoers.

Even though I really wanted to see it on the big screen and hope to do so at least once more I still stand with my impression that Stronger might more likely be a movie to watch at the comfort and safety of one´s home than in the cinema.
