Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeff Bauman have seemingly been everywhere promoting Stronger, which is enjoying raves from audiences and critics alike. Now if only the box office would catch up...
There have been so many good pictures and fun interviews that it was impossible to keep up. Herewith, a random assortment of shots, stories and clips that appealed to me.
From Jane Goodall's Facebook page:
When on the road, Jane is never sure who she is going to meet. Luckily for Jane, fate was on her side when on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and she crossed paths with the incredible Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeff Bauman - a survivor of the horrific Boston Marathon bombing and the inspiration for the new film 'Stronger'. Their conversations reinforced Jane's reason for hope - the indomitable human spirit - as Jeff is indeed the embodiment of strength and kindness.
The first four are from Greg Russell Photography. Love the (literal) framing.
Don't know who took these, but they are fantastic:

First things first: I LOVE the movie! It will take me a little while to sort out all the thoughts and feels about it, though, because I still feel like I´ve been taken apart and not put back together completely! Like Jake said at the last curtain call of SITPWG, my heart is so full it might just explode.
I will start responding to the posts above, that´ll help me a bit to sort myself out *lol*
I downloaded Sunday the day it came out and listened to it on my way to Maastricht. I´ve got a recording from the New York City Centre and of course there is a huge difference, not only in the quality of the recording itself but I believe I can also hear a difference in the performances. The cast recording is more - playfull, I´d say. The flow is smoother and the performances with more confidence, the way it can of course be expected after having done the show for 10 weeks. I could already hear and see a difference when I was at the Hudson for the first preview and then the last matinée and last show. I know that some of the actors have already performed in this musical in other revivals, but with ever new show you have to adjust to a different group of people with their individual characters and you have to find a way to connect and work together. It doesn´t matter how long you´re rehearsing, the last step in making this connection is made when you´re on stage actually performing in front of an audience. I love both recordings.
Some of the tweets about Stronger/Jake make me laugh so hard, it´s just great. I really have to refrain myself not to spend too much time searching for tweets - I could do it all day! Well in fact I almost have a few times since TIFF!
I retweeted the Chris Stuckmann review, it is a good summary of what I think about the movie. And BJ - I also think that we get a LOT of promo with this movie - and there is no promo for Europe included yet! When I was doing research on Jake´s previous projects I never found as much footage/interviews like with this one, even on the more recent movies like Life or Demolition.
I think I am going to write more about Stronger when the new post is up. Just want to say that I´m glad I´ve got the office all to myself today because I´ve had a good cry this morning and I´m still on the edge and welling up all the time. The movie definitely took me back to a few moments of my life that I don´t really want to think about that much.

Stronger stays with you. I find myself thinking about Jeff, interestingly enough, wondering how he is doing, how he gets through his days, etc. Sometimes when I see him standing around for photos and doing all that walking I remember the line where he said it "felt like needles" and I know all this constant activity has to tire him. He is so generous to us. I have grown very fond of Jeff Bauman. I'm so glad Jake included Jeff in all the promotion so we get to know him as a real live person.

That's what I was thinking as well. I have problems with my legs myself, so I know how difficult it can be to keep up with people physically, especially at the end of the day, when you're tired. I guess most promoting is done, now the movie's out. But my hat's off to Jeff, in any case.

That´s what I was thinking right away when I realised that Jeff would be doing promo, too, and even more so when I saw all the footage from TIFF and everything that followed after that.
Stronger is going to be the second movie in my life that I will be watching at the cinema at least twice. It´s still on my mind, all the time and very intensely, and that doesn´t happen that often with a movie. Thinking about it I remember only three movies right away that got to me so much, the first was "The last unicorn", "Seven" starring Brad Pitt (I had nightmares for weeks after that) and Enemy.
I am wondering wether Jeff is going to be in Zurich and London, too. My gut feeling tells me he won´t but I haven´t checked.
I still couldn´t find the interviews Dino Lalli did, and POPCORN with Peter Travers. I was hoping they would be up on IHJ at some point, but weren´t when I checked last time. Ah well....

I was hoping they'd be more aggressive this week with marketing but it doesn't seem that way. I've seen less tv spots than before. There are plenty of talk shows Jake hasn't done yet that could help get the word out about the film.

Like Diana, I'm wondering what will happen with European promotion. Jeff's story isn't as well known here. I'm thinking / hoping 'Stronger' will nevertheless be a surprise hit here because of Jake's status as an actor. Don't think it will be huge, but Jake's name alone should draw attention. There's not a whole lot of buzz about it yet as far as I can tell. How well is it doing in the US?
Diana, I saw 'Enemy' twice at the cinema - and 'Demolition' three times. Yes, I'm nuts :)

He can't do more talkshows now because their schedules are filled with stars of upcoming movies (D.Hoffman, J.Roberts, Ford, Leto, Gisling) and chock full of TV stars plugging their new shows or Emmy awards. There's barely a window where he could go now.
I guess we're witnessing a case of a movie doing much better than the industry, including its own distributors, expected. Jake and Jeff did tons of interviews and as many screenings as possible (a new one is scheduled for 29 Sept. with Jake) but that was all the marketing staff had planned. Few TV adds, zero billboards and a handful of talkshows. Which is too little for a movie with a 95 score, the best score of all newly released films.
Mara Buxbaum also did a poor job in scheduling Jake's talkshows appearances: no Seth Meyer, Colbert, James Corden (what better venue to promote the movie and the cast album of his Broadway musical - talk about lost opportunities).
The movie delivered. The director delivered. The actors delivered big time, more than any other: they're the only ones universally praised.
Now it's up to Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, publicists and marketing staff to up their game. If they screw up it's on them. Let's hope they have a long run strategy.
Thanks for the new post, UV! I love the choice of photos and interviews!
I was thinking about the promotion for Stronger and what has been done so far, the talkshows that have been attended, screenings with Q&A etc. Do you think that Jake is attending more screenings than usual or have I just missed out on them with other promotions? Anyways, this way you certainly get a packed cinema because Jake is there (or someone else from the cast even though I feel like Tatiana is not attending as many screenings as Jake) and the ones who have been there are posting comments on twitter, fb and insta. And THAT means that people spread the news that the movie is great, re-tweeting critics, articles etc. That´s what I can see when I am searching for Jake/Tatiana or the movie online. There is loads of comments on the movie and I sometimes click on the posting to find a comment like "oh really? I think I might have to go and see that one". Not to mention the retweets of several newschannels, magazines and critics. Needless to say it saves a lot of money for marketing when you include the moviegoers. If that has been the plan from the beginning it´s quite a risk, though. The marketing team is including social media a lot more for this movie it seems.
When it comes to the amount of cinemas the movie has been released at yet I think the focus is not that much on the first weekend, first week etc. but on the total box office results since Stronger is not a Blockbuster.

Hmmm... the talkshows also squeeze in guests when something unexpected comes up. I don´t think there are plans for any more talkshow-appearances, but you never know... the ratings are so good, the reviews and the reactions from the moviegoers... and then there is Oscar-talk around again and many think Jake should´ve won or at least get nominated for Nightcrawler, so that comes into play, too - seriously, would you want to miss out on interviewing a potential Oscar-nominee? I bet the people behind the remaining talkshows Jake or Tatiana have not been to yet are generally keeping a close eye on what´s actually happening and in case it looks like a movie could be a surprise success (at the box office or for award-season) they´re gonna MAKE room.
What a fantastic new post! *happy* Love all the pictures - ALL of them!
It's indeed impossible to keep up, I'm glad it's not just me :)
Nice article from Vulture and cute one from Buzzfeed.
I am loving all the Jake goodness but I agree I wish they would have kept the tv ads going through this weekend. I saw a quick ad last night with all the great reviews but that's it. Next weekend is Bladerunner so I think they do need a long game here.
Hoping they can get him on more shows in the coming months in the run up to the awards shows, particularly the Oscars. I besides Corden, Kimmel, Colbert, Tevor Noah, there's Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live. They should get him back on SNL or even Howard Stern. Both were great appearances last time. I hope they don't waste this momentum.
Have been listening to SITPWG every day. Love the whole album but The Dog Song, Putting It Together, Move On and the Finale are on repeat for Jake's incredible vocals. I honestly prefer the Facebook video rehearsal of Finishing the Hat a bit more than this smoother version.
Speaking of James Corden, Maggie was on his show last night and she was asking him if her and Jake could do Carpool Karaoke together lol. Would love that!
She was also on Andy Cohen WWHL with 50 Cent a few weeks back. A lot of Jake talk lol.
And thanks for the new post UV! :)
My fault that I didn't make myself clear, Diana:
1) There are other potential nominees + former Oscar winners scheduled for next weeks to promote their potential Oscar movies or BO smash hits. Jake is one of dozens of potential awards contenders and now it's time for their films to be released.
2) A strict hierarchy is used in scheduling guests: A-list movie stars always come first. The lesser known, smaller names always come second. It's why no talkshow has two big movie stars promoting two separate projects the same night (except when friends, like Damon/Affleck, joke around).
No talkshow would bump one high profile movie star to make room for another. You can't "squeeze in" Jake and Harrison Ford during the same show. Nor Jake and Leto, Jake and Goslng, Jake and Dustin Hoffman. Jake and each one of the above will always be scheduled as the first guest.
That being said, there are Fridays repeats or specials that may be postponed to make room for a new interview with Jake. But the publicist has to make the arrangements.
I do believe Jake will do at least one other talkshow towards the end of November. Maybe it will coincide with the release of the album for SITPWG - "Kris-Cross" :) promotion works best. Hopefully then Stronger will have many industry screenings, for SAG, HFPA, BAFTA and the academy-that-shall-not-be-named. And hopefully they will take it into serious consideration.
I really hope they don't blow this opportunity for Jake. He's pretty much a lock right now to at least get nominations across the board during awards season and he deserves it. The studio and Mara need to do their part though.
Thanks for the new post!
I wonder what the Meteoritic Score is. xD
Man,everyone's a (meta)critic :P Seriously, thanks, Hagen. Fixed.
I added one of my fave pictures form all of this - Jake, Jeff and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Some random fun tweets:

Stronger movie: 8.5/ 10 Jake Gyllenhaal: 100/10 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
God abt jake gyllenhaal: shoot i made him completely perfect..that's not fair uhh.. i'll just give him a long name?? does that count?
If you're looking for an hour that's going to make you want to be best friends with Jake Gyllenhaal. (Talking about the Ringer podcast)
Props to Jake Gyllenhaal for reciting an entire Kris/Kross rap & also referencing @cypresshill "Hits from a Bong" on @BillSimmons podcast
HOWEVER, Jake Gyllenhaal flawlessly rapping the entirety of the Kriss Kross Sprite commercial from memory on this podcast is perfect.
Listened to Jake Gyllenhaal interview on @BillSimmons pod. Seems like a really insightful & funny guy. Plus he made out w/ Jennifer Anniston
Forgot to mention the Rachael Ray show in my earlier post! OMG is Rachael a Jake fangirl. :)
If you haven't seen the show it's a must watch.
Yes, Rachael is a total fangirl. She knew all of Jake's movies and a bunch of facts and trivia about them. And she wouldn't let anyone else cook for Jake, lol. It was a great interview.
I do hope they keep Jake out there so his performance isn't lost in the awards season glut. Whatever they have to do to get Jake on, they should do it. I'm all for Jake carpool karaoke.
Love this quote from the Time review, an all-out rave for Jake:
There's both wildness and weakness in him, an unruly combination that we usually call courage, only because we don't have a better word for it.
Why Jake is such a good actor. Poor Jake!
EFK, I liked the Vulture article but disagree on some of their interpretations, especially about Demolition, one of Jake's best roles IMO.
David Gordon Green narrates a scene from Stronger. I think this would be best seen in the movie, but I know it's hard to wait for these things! It is one of the best scenes in the film.
A couple of other scenes: 1 and 2.
Again, I'd wait for the movie but if you can't... :)
I strongly dislike another Buzzed article that clogged up twitter yesterday, declaring that Jake isn't the best thing about Stronger, Tatiana is. Not sure why it has to be set up like that, but needless to say, I strongly disagree.
I can't remember if this interview was posted: TIFF Extended
Article on Don Mowat, Jake's and Stronger's make-up guy.
I think this was posted as a video or audio interview. But it made me smile to think of Jake watching those youtube reaction trailers. I remember discovering them and going down that rabbit hole. It's funny to think of him doing the same thing - with much more at stake, obviously.
This guy was in SITPWG and posted this on FB:
Earlier this year, I got to live out every musical theatre nerds deepest fantasy, and go into the studio to record a new Broadway Cast Album for Sunday in the Park with George. Singing next to this incredible company lead by Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, with the best orchestra on Broadway, and Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine, and Michael Starobin on the other side of the glass was a huge check on a bucket list I would never have been bold enough to write.
Our album is out today. Listen closely, and you may just hear me singing “Sunday” with all my might.
Report on local Boston reaction, featuring one of the local actors.
This post goes along with the one above, mentioning that actor and the guy who played Sully:
Such a great night w/ my boy James LeBlanc, his family and friends at the opening of the movie Stronger. Jimmy played a pivotal role and had one of the best scenes in the movie with Jake Gyllenhaal. The film was a roller coaster of emotions: powerful, sad, funny, inspirational, devastating and everything in between. Another Southie good guy, Richard Lane Jr., had a huge role in the movie and knocked it out of the park. Congratulations for doing such an amazing job. Proud of you both and you deserve all of the accolades coming your way! *BIG Thank You to my great friends, WCVB Channel 5 Boston Mary Saladna and Chris Garvin for being a part of a special night and coming down and covering such an incredible story that is sure to hit home with all of us! #BostonStrong
Jake responds to the casting criticism here in this interview

@EFK Oooh Carpool Karaoke! I heard about that but have to watch the interviews still. I´d love to see that happening. I hope The Deuce will be available over here, too. I loved Maggie´s performance in The Honourable Woman, even though I sadly didn´t catch all the episodes.
Regarding SITPWG I have to admit that I also prefer the Facebook rehearsal version of Finishing the Hat, but this one is great, too. I generally feel like some of the musical arrangements are different to what I remember from the performances at the Hudson or is it just me?
I cannot say much about the marketing for Stronger apart from what is online. There is nothing happening here so far, but that doesn´t surprise me given the fact that there is not even a release date yet. I wonder whether that is going to change after the film festival in Zurich and London.
Anon at 1:38, I agree with you on all of your points. We´ll simply have to wait and see whether Jake is doing more talkshows or not. Maybe with all the good reviews and ratings the publicists will now try to get Jake on some more shows. Besides, it might already be fixed but not publicized yet.
I absolutely LOVED the @BillSimmons podcast. I like most of the podcasts with Jake I have listened to so far. There is something about the tone in his voice and the way he answers the question - I don´t know. Maybe it´s because I cannot see him and only have his voice to focus on or maybe it´s because there are no cameras. Something is different in these kind of interviews.
When I read that interview with Donald Mowat who did Makeup and hair I had to laugh at some point. I knew very early on that Jake got a perm for this role - I just wish someone has taken a photo of him with all the curlers in his hair. Just to imagine how he must´ve looked like makes me giggle!
UV, I agree with you on the Vulture article and Demolition. I really liked the movie and Jake's performance.
As for the other Buzzfeed article, I am super annoyed by it. Plenty of ways the writer could have praised Tatiana's performance without dismissing/disrespecting Jake's. And it's still going around Twitter. Ughhh.
Diana, would love to see Jake and/or Jake and Maggie do a Carpool Karaoke. Would be so fun!
I thought the Honorable Woman was good. The Deuce is good so far imo.
Hopefully there will more promotion in Europe when he goes there. I believe he will be there next week for that award.
The Bill Simmons podcast was great. His version of the Kris Kross commercial is so funny! Bill Simmons/The Ringer did a post on it lol https://twitter.com/ringer/status/913524533042102272

Reading these articles, I have one question. Why would anyone bring up, and single out Prince of Persia? It irritates me to no end. Most actors have movies that aren't successful. Most actors have movies that are real junk. But it seems like they insist on defining Jake by Prince of Persia.
It was a Disney movie! It came out just as 3D was getting really popular again, and Bruckheimer went cheap and failed to spend the extra money to convert it to 3D. The special effects, something Bruckheimer was known for for years, looked cheesey.
It wasn't a "bad" movie. It just didn't do as well as they expected it to do. It amazes me because when Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern came out around the same time, and bombed, he was made of teflon and they spun it as if there was definitely going to be a sequel, etc.
Jake was working at a slower pace back then, and didn't have enough movies coming down the pipeline to soften the blow about Prince of Persia. But IMO, his PR team and the studio, blew it. They left it all on Jake's shoulders to answer for. Dumb.
But even now, when it's on TV, a lot of kids ( and adults ) enjoy watching it. It's fun. I've seen much, much worse. OK. Rant over.
I was glad one of those podcasts talked about Source Code. because for me that was a shift. I'm glad Duncan Jone's name appears on that list of directors who did some great work with Jake. I feel bad that no one ever talks about Rendition, which I feel is a superb movie and Gavin Hood. (WEHT to him.)
Demolition was a lovely movie and Jake did an excellent job along with Chris Cooper and Naomi Watts and the young boy who played her son. He was excellent.
Ok, it´s official. I am legitimately freaking out about that Popcorn interview, to be more precise: Jake´s singing at the end. I swear if he doesn´t do another musical soon (and plenty of them in the future) I will be coming back as an ostrich in my next life, and I´ll track him down to scare the sh*t out of him for all his life! Why does his singing voice get to me so much I have no idea... but the love for this musical, especially when he sang a part of Move On, I could see it in his eyes and his body language - I am floored.
Oh, and for the record: I LOVE Prince of Persia! That movie and when I saw Jake on Inside the Actors studio made me want to know more about his work. Prince of Persia is the movie I have seen most often so far - I can´t even count it. I love these types of movies when I just want to get entertained and have fun and I would´ve loved to see it on the big screen. I don´t care about reviews that much when it comes to what I want to see. I often like things critics don´t and vice versa.
Statement made *lol*.
I agree with you, bobbyanna. Source Code and Demolition were brilliant. I haven´t seen Rendition so I can´t say anything about it.
Jake is so excited about having worked with Jacques Audiard, I am curious to see what comes out of that.
You know what, I remember Jake saying in an interview that he won´t film anything this fall, I feel it might have to do with Stronger and the promotion for it, what do you guys think?
Jake said he wants to concentrate on his production company this fall.
Not a PoP fan myself *hides* Believe me, I've tried, but I'm just not into that kind of movies.
So much stuff going on! Sorry if this is a repeat.
http://www.sagawards.org/2016MPNC/screenings/la/NomComm
I think that was a new one, Sal. Good to see Jake getting a few things in before he jets off to Zurich. I think there might even have been two screening Q&As tonight. Some photos of one screening. And yet another?
Love the Popcorn interview and singing - glad we finally got to see it. It's especially fun to hear Jake sing Move On lines he didn't get to sing as George.
BJ, no need to hide. You're in the majority on that one. I don't think we fans of PoP need to hide, either! And I agree, Bobbyanna - it was a long time ago. People need to get over it.
EFK, the Stronger writer (John Pollen) retweeted that freaking Buzzed article. That really annoyed me.
I'm glad Jake addressed the able-bodied actor controversy. His answer was babble-ish but at least he answered. He might need to tighten that up if he's going to do the whole awards circuit.
James Taylor with a Jeff/Stronger shoutout.
BJ, you´re right, Jake wants to concentrate on IX this fall (should´ve been clearer about that). Since Stronger is IX´s first big movie project I am wondering whether that was part of this decision. I was just thinking, apart from the fact that I would love for this movie to be a success because I think it´s great and many people should see it, it´s also a test for IX. It now shows whether IX is able to do good work on every aspect of movie-making, and I don´t mean smaller productions like Hondros. That´s what people working in the business will also keep a very close eye on and of course Jake and Riva want to put IX on the map right now.
There is no reason to hide because you´re not a fan of PoP, BJ *lol* From all the movies I have seen so far I didn´t like The Good Girl that much. The story didn´t appeal to me really.
I saw Stronger this weekend and have to say Jake's performance is incredibly real and definitely deserving of all the attention it's been getting. In particular, I felt the closeup on his face with the range of subtle emotions that run across it as he is being rolled out of the hospital is superb. I also was moved by the car/crawling scene. Just magnificent work. That's why it pains me to read about the box office. The lack of commercials on TV may have been part of it. Also, it's difficult and realistic subject matter. Sometimes, people just don't want to see that when they go to movies. They don't know what they're missing. I just hope it doesn't hurt chances of awards later, though not counting on that to happen. On the upside, Stronger is #1 on EW's Must List this week. Brief video of recent Q&A in LA:
RH
Oops. Here's the video link: https://mobile.twitter.com/rosetiico/status/914546302674919424/video/1
Is the US box office that bad, then? What a terrible shame.
I've finally seen some TV ads here (Netherlands). Yaaay! 'Stronger' will premiere this Thursday.
Some nice Twitter reviews
Jenelle Riley loves him :) Her conversations with Jake are always a joy.
I am hoping this Q&A with Jenelle will be posted somewhere. There seem to be some fun bits in it, too!!
Just checked the box office results: rank 13, down 5 places. Total gross $3,228,637 so far. With a budget of $30 million that´s way to go.
I'm hoping word of mouth will carry it along and it will improve. But I can't help but wonder. if they had opened it wider, say 800 theatres from the start, maybe they would have done better? Because the reviews we re raves and it was fresh, and the trailer was being seen on TV. I'm peculating here, but maybe the word of mouth would have been a much stronger pull if it had open wider to begin with. Don't know why, but right now I'm thinking about that James Franco movie where he had to chop off his own arm. True story about a hiker.
My heart aches for all those affected by madness in Las Vegas.
I don't think "peculating is a word.....I meant SPECULATING. : )
"Don't know why, but right now I'm thinking about that James Franco movie where he had to chop off his own arm. True story about a hiker."
127 hours. Yes, I had to think about that one, too.
It makes me sad that so often, with Jake's movies, we all speculate ;) "what if...?" It really shouldn't be like that - he's such an amazing actor. I so wish 'Stronger' would be epic for him.
OK. I checked, and 127 Hours came out in 2010. Its total box office gross to date is $18 Million. Opening weekend box office was less than $300,000. It was nominated for 6 Oscars including Bet Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Picture. Golden Globes too, and James Franco was nominated for a SAG. So obviously another film about a highly publicized event where some thing terrible happens to a young man and he has to show heroism. I know it's not the same, but there are a few similarities. I found the story of Jeff Bauman much more compelling. But the point is neither film appeals to a broad audience, yet both are critically acclaimed. I think Jake's movie will stand the test of time. There's a strength and a nobility to the characterization that really touches your heart when you see it.
Short snippet from a press conference at ZFF
Jake at ZFF press conference today
It was posted at about 5 p.m. local time, but I don´t know when it took place.
So the gross to date is $18 Million? I´ve read that wrong then, that would already be half of the budget in (in case I got at least THAT right!). I will definetely go at least once more. Still no release date in Germany, though.... but since it took so long I already thought it might come out after ZFF and BFI in London.
I can be patient but I do have my limits! lol
No, no. I'm sorry. Didn't mean to confuse. : )The total gross for James Franco movie, 127 Hours was $18 Million. And it took a long while to get there.
Right now the latest figures I saw for Jake was over $3 Million but it might be more by now.
So Zurich has a green carpet and Jake is expected there at 8.15 p.m. CET (New York is 6 hours behind).
Sadly I couldn´t find a live-streaming of the press conference and it seems like there won´t be a streaming of the green carpet or the ceremony where Jake is given his award. It just says on the website that he will be given the award "this evening" so I assume it´s after the screenings.
Live from Zurich green carpet
Thank you for the link, UV! My computer messes with me today.... but I´ve found a larger snippet from the press conference. I hope there is going to be more of that.

I think I might search for more tomorrow. All these snippets... I really hope the whole awards ceremony and the press conference will be posted by someone online. Never lose hope, right... I got a response from someone on insta that there is more to come.
Off to bed, good night everyone!
Thanks for all the links, Diana. And for making them clickable. Once works stops making me, well, work, I'll dive in :)
Bobbyana, if I remember correctly, some people didn't want to see 127 Hours because of the arm scene. There were some complaints about that.
I don't know why Stronger, despite the reviews, is not succeeding. Too bad, Jake made every effort to promote this movie. He looks so happy and proud.
Here is some more:
A short video from the green carpet, no additional info in the text.
interview Tagesanzeiger
Another 2 snippets I´ve found from a short interview ahead/after of the screening:
before screening
interview/friendship
More boats....more treeees....more Jake....
entering or leaving cinema
entering the stage to accept the award
interview on stage
interview about genre and producing
That´s it for now. Some interview parts from the award ceremony are overlapping but some of the newer ones are longer.
I have found two images of Jake leaving his car and when he had just left it, one when he was on his way to/from the press conference, one from the green carpet ahead of the awards ceremony and screening. In both photos you can see him already holding a pen to sign autographs. I´ve seen that many times at movie premieres and festivals, not everyone does think of that. I like that.
What I recognised at the stage door at the Hudson earlier this year was that he came out to sign autographs and take selfies with the people waiting, but he rarely looked at someone. He listened to what was being said to him and often gave a short reply, but I think he concentrated on signing as many Playbills and who-knows-what-else in a short period of time - apart from that, looking up and directly into a flash right before your face is not something I´d like to risk.... even when you´re used to flashes.
I am pointing that out because I´ve read postings on several social media accounts where people recognised him not looking at people in the eyes at several occasions.
I've met Jake before and made eye contact with him. I think it all depends on his mood that day as it does with anyone. I've also noticed his publicists usually hand him a marker before he goes to fans.
I agree, it depends on the situation and the mood, just like with everyone.
Oh some of the questions I´ve heard at the ZFF - urgh. Even I could do better. Good thing Jake is an ACTOR *lol* even though at some point I thought his jaw was about to drop!
I just wish someone would ask him about the score, everyone is so focused on the actors, the director and maybe the screenwriter, but the score is such a important part of a movie... it can be perfect, as long as the score sucks, you can just forget about it. I would love to know whether he has been involved in that part of the process and how and when it came in.
After 1,5 years of waiting for this movie there are so many things I would love to know *sighs*
I heard someone criticize the score. I didn't find it too intrusive or sappy. I like the song that plays over the end credits. What would you like to know about it, Diana, or was that just an example of a question never asked?
Jake had an odd reaction to some of the green carpet questions. If I ever have time to put a Zurich recap together, we can see some of them. Some are probably captured in all these links.
Today in unexpected Jake news:
Jake reads an essay on Modern Love.
Jake to star in a Calvin Klein ad.
Loved the essay reading. It was a sad but hopeful story, and Jake did a beautiful job expressing the emotions of the piece. The ad looks goof but I'd like to see a bigger picture. And more photos. There is apparently more to come. I have always wondered if Jake would ever do one of these campaigns. I guess he decided it was time.
UV, I am interested in EVERY aspect of making a movie, and the score is just one part that is almost never addressed. Given the horrible questions that I sometimes hear it makes me not just cringe but I sometimes get almost angry.
But to get into detail: I love music a lot and I find the effect it has in a movie extremely fascinating. It´s meant to underline a scene, to highlight a specific part and to trigger a certain emotion. It´s so difficult to get it right, to choose or even compose a piece that matches a moment perfectly.
I think the score for Stronger was well-chosen. I never felt it was too much. And - in my opinion a good thing - I can´t remember any of the pieces specifically, but the feeling I had when watching certain scenes. To me, if that´s the result from watching a movie like this, it´s perfect.
If I could, I would love to do an interview with Jake ONLY about music. The very few things I have heard him say about music in general, about music on stage and music used in film make me really want to get further into that in a conversation. I think it could be really interesting.
I was curious whether the movie Stronger would manage to make me react the same way I did when reading the book and script, but it really did. It was a different way of watching a movie for me, though, because I had read the script beforehand. I am usually very critical when a book is adapted into a movie, but even though parts were of course missing and scenes written in that were not in the book I think the story itself is fluently told, the different characters were portrayed in a very convincing and believable way and the tone and message were just as clear as in the book. I am drawn to non-verbal acting, to subtle, almost not recognisable gestures, bodylanguage and facial expression. That´s the parts that really get to me. The interaction between Jake and Tatiana is so brilliant, especially when it comes to non-verbal communication and expressions of feelings, both physically and mentally. I can´t wait to see the movie again to study these parts more intensely.
I will have to listen to the essay later on today or tomorrow. The photo for the Calvin Klein campaign made me think "if that would only be reality for him soon" right away! Somehow I still hope he´s already found someone and just tries to keep that private for as long as possible.
I wondered why Jake was at the Calvin Klein fashion show. Now I know.
Some funny tweets on BFI LFF day:
A bright sunny afternoon in London... the perfect conditions to be locked in a dark room with JAKE GYLLENHAAL for two hours.
Interviewed Jake Gyllenhaal and forgot to ask him about that damn spider in ENEMY someone fire me.
Jake Gyllenhaal just walked by me. I saw him coming, thought to myself "be cool", he gave me a startled look... turns out I shouted
LOL.
Can't wait to hear Real Sal's report.
This account is tweeintg things from the talk, I think. They might have misunderstood here:
The Brighton Screen @BrightonScreen
#BrokebackMountain Fun fact: Ang Lee in rehearsals told #Jakegyllenhaal and #HeathLedger you two go together like Whale and Water @BFI #LFF
If I am not completely mistaken (google translate is fun sometimes) Jake AND Jeff are going to attend the film festival in Rome which takes place from Oct 26th until Nov 5th.
Stronger will be screened on saturday, Oct 28th, and they seem to have planned an interview about his career and his inspirations. Seems to me as if this is one of the interviews/Q&As that we know from other festivals/screenings that takes place before or after the screening.
Maybe someone can help with translating, here is the link to the film festival´s website:
romacinemafest
Looks like they are saying Jeff will be there, Diana. Loved your answer about the music, btw/ Wouldn't it be great to get a series of talks with Jake on various parts of moviemaking - score, cinematography, editing, etc.
I agree that the Stronger score wasn't intrusive. It wasn't memorable but at least it wasn't memorable for being over the top.
More from London:
For some reason I can’t explain, I didn’t like Jake Gyllenhaal. Then I heard him on @BillSimmons podcast. I’m sorry Jake, you kick ass.
That moment when you're in a dim lit hallway with Jake Gyllenhaal...
Just been to Jake Gyllenhaal's LFF Screen Talk. He was fascinating. Quoted Danny Kaye as his biggest influence.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a very beautiful human #LFF
JAKE GYLLENHAAL IS SO BEAUTIFUL OMFG
danielle @taronegertuns
WHAT. A. START. I JUST MET JAKE GYLLENHAAL AND SEEING MY BEST FRIEND REUNITE WITH HIM WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOMENT JAMY IS REAL!!! (pics)
Fascinating and interesting talk with Jake Gyllenhaal this afternoon at #LFF2017 https://www.instagram.com/p/BZ34bORgut6/ (nice pic)
Emotionally compromised by Jake Gyllenhaal’s #LFF screen talk, especially when he talked about Heath.
Gotta say it’s one of the best Q&As I’ve been to. Hope they recorded it, but not sure they did.
He also mentioned that he and Heath Ledger had both auditioned for a month for Moulin Rouge, and that HL was years ahead of him as an actor.
Maybe he was,but the boy Gyllenhaal has become the most interesting actor of his generation. Keeps making great choices.
Indeed. That's what made the talk so interesting.
Jake Gyllenhaal, praising his co-stars and directors #LFF @BFI
#screentalk with #JakeGyllenhaal @BFI was a joyful surprise! Sense of humour and a great insight on acting! 5*
Celebrity culture is so fucking weird. God bless Jake Gyllenhaal dealing w screamers & criers after he had a career talk?
I hope someone did record it!
I love this tweet:
“As you grow older, you evolve, if you’re open to it. Now, I feel there must be joy, there must be humility.” Jake Gyllenhaal
lovely photo and comment
Jake signing
BTW, instagram is exploding with postings about Jake since TIFF! Not that it is surprising when a new movie comes out, but anyway.... it´s huuuuuuuuge!
Wouldn't it be great to get a series of talks with Jake on various parts of moviemaking - score, cinematography, editing, etc.
Oooooh yes, that´s what I had in mind for quite some time now! And you know what? Jake´s own website is sort of dead, really. How cool would it be for him to use that platform to post these interviews on there? He wouldn´t just answer questions but it could be a real conversation and he could really get EVERYTHING he wants in it! I don´t understand why it´s not used anyway, it´s such a great way to communicate.
American Cinematheque Award for Amy Adams
Jake will be there, too. Nov 10th.
I have posted a snippet of this interview before, now I think I´ve found the whole bit:
Interview ZFF - Watson
Just make sure to stop the video as soon as the interview ends or else you might see Donald Trump throw toilet rolls into a crowd of people in Puerto Rico....
after that ny times story today i hope jake never works with harvey weinstein again

Hated movies. Saw Jake Gyllenhall in a movie. Now I watch movies.

So nice to spend an hour this afternoon listening to #JakeGyllenhaal talk about his career & new movie #Stronger Loved the anecdotes about Donnie Darko & suddenly got something in my eye when he spoke beautifully about Heath Ledger & Brokeback Mountain. Jake talking about how Heath turned down a part in a Baz Luhrmann movie after the gruelling audition process him and Jake both went through for Moulin Rouge
Such a charming, intelligent, funny and very gentle soul. When talking about Brokeback Mountain he said how young they were & how he didn't understand. Then welled up & said "The things you learn..." I was nearly in bits. #lff
jadeindia21Hi everyone. This happened today. It’s about to happen again (after a screening). He is the absolute best - there are no other coherent words at the moment.
it was wonderful and interesting, and he's a very handsome man - which I know now as we basically sat in front of him
First up in my #LFF17 lineup - Jake Gyllenhaal Screen Talk. Publicly I’m here to support his fab acting work.

Bonus eloquent and funny Q&A with Jake Gyllenhaal 🙏🏼✨
I saw Stronger this evening at #lff and it was an amazing film. So emotional but also quite funny. Jake Gyllenhaal is incredible
Jake Gyllenhaal showed up after the Stronger showing #LFF2017 #whatababe

Outstanding performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany in @StrongerTheFilm
An absolutely wonderful start to the #bfilondonfilmfestival. We saw ‘Stronger’ an extremely emotional and beautifully made film about a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombings and his story following the event, starring #jakegyllenhaal. We then had a wonderful Q&A with the man himself. What a lovey guy.

Jake Gyllenhaal coming out tonight to speak very eloquently about his new film Stronger, which so much more real and raw than I was expecting. Bravo on an incredible performance.
Hot under the collar

First @BFI #LFF screening for the year. A Strong start with #JakeGyllenhaal & @tatianamaslany in @StrongerTheFilm. Bring tissues.💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Sorry, that was a lot of tweets, lol. But they were so wonderful.
Anon, the Harvey Weinstein story is appalling. The fallout is going to be dramatic. Not sure how he comes back from this.
Thanks for the interview link, Diana. And the warning!
Sh*t. Absolutely no time to read all of this, since I'm in the middle of my move right now :) Think I'll read it all next year or so to catch up :D
UV, that´s LOADS! I love it, though! Keep it coming!
BJ, you´re still alive! Just make sure the moving boxes don´t fall on you, right...
I hope Jake is doing some more promo in London in a few weeks, the movie doesn´t come out until december.... I think he will do Graham Norton, BBC radio 1 (Nick Grimshaw probably) and some morning/breakfast tv shows.
It´s about time we get more release dates for Europe, now that promo starts over here.
Hi everyone, thought I'd give my two cents from yesterday.
I had such a lovely day. I sat in the second row near the wall but had a great view of Jake (which felt incredibly surreal). Only negative I can say is that he was over 20 minutes late and didn't mention it when he came in, but oh well, I'm being petty ;)
He was, as usual, thoughtful, articulate, and gave very long answers. I would've like it if they discussed more/other movies, his production company, and future projects. Three scenes were selected (Donnie under hypnosis with his therapist; 'I wish I knew how to quit you' from BBM; interrogation of Paul Dano's character in Prisoners). It was so crazy watching Jake watch those scenes. Most of it I had heard before from watching (too many) interviews already, but I did learn:
- when Jake and Anne H were shooting for BBM, Ang told Jake the their characters needed to go together 'like oil and water'. Jake got confused by this and just sort of nodded, then went home and wrote it down 40 times hoping it would get through to him.
- spoke about Heath being light years ahead of him. More about the Moulin Rouge auditions. Said Heath had called him (as a joke) to say that he got the part but turned it down for Jake ;)
- I think he had a backache or something because he kept on rolling his shoulders and straightening up.
- Unsurprisingly he seemed tired. I felt like some of his jokes fell flat, but that could also be the audience. He didn't really look around that much at the people, mainly talking to the interviewer.
- he had some really silly questions from the audience. A random woman in a big hat and sunglasses (lol) asked him why he said in a recent interview that he has no humour. His response 'I think I was being sarcastic, thought people here would get it more' and then she asked him why he was being a liar then!! It was awkward as hell.
- someone asked which of his characters he is most like and he responded with Lou Bloom. No one laughed, so he was making a joke out that, and wondered if any of us had seen Nightcrawler, and if not, 'that's totally fine'.
It went over way too fast, my friend and I left around the back to get the bus to Piccadilly Circus, and to my surprise he was standing right there signing autographs! My friend tried to get me involved but I was too shy, but I got to see him up close. He quickly got in his fancy car with tinted windows and was driving slowly alongside us as we were walking. Was so tempted to wave.
Movie was fantastic. He and Tatiana did a brilliant job, and I definitely got tearful at certain parts. We were in the front row, so when he came out after to do a q&a, he was right in front of me.
It was a great day! (sorry for such a long post)
Oh, and another thing. Walked around the Southbank Centre (where the talk was held) and so many people around there and the theatre were talking about how excited they were to see Jake Gyllenhaal, with a hard 'G'. No one said his surname as he says it, like a 'J' sound. Was kind of laughing to myself about that.
Aawww, great to hear you had a good time, Real Sal! Yeeeaaah, questions... sometimes you just want to make them unheard.
I´ve found two users on instagram that have posted some parts of the screen talk:

The last one from alexei ends and there is one more here:

We haven´t had these yet:

Lovely to read your post, Sal!
All Dutch people pronounce 'Gyllenhaal' with a hard 'G' as well *rolls eyes*
Thanks for the great recap,Sal! I'm so happy you were at both of those events. I remember when you got the tickets and wondered i f there would be a Q&A. And you got to see two.
There was a tweet about the audience not getting Jake's humor. At least some of you did :)
There are two more links for you:
a short clip from ET Canada with comments from Jake / ZFF Golden Eye Award
audio recording of Q&A at screening at BFI London Oct 6th
I can´t listen to the audio recording right now - I just wish there were more from the screenings and from ZFF!
Hope you´re having a lovely sunday!
I have to applaud Jake Gyllenhaal for executing the role Jeff Bauman so well. I felt his pain through the screen & sobbed endlessly.
More links - I love it! Thanks, Diana. Only listened to a bit of the BFI talk. Will listen tonight. So glad someone thought to record it.
Jake is still in London, apparently. Someone on FB said she saw him at her work today - looks like a cafe. And he went to see the last performance of The Ferryman, an acclaimed play directed by Sam Mendes. I think it's headed for Broadway.
Jake will be at a fundraiser for Edible Schoolyard on October 24.
I wonder if Jake will comment on Harvey Weinstein. Quite a few A listers have issued statements now.
considering his publicist fought to hide stories about casey affleck last year i doubt jake will speak out about harvey
also no one is really looking for him to make a comment i haven't seen him name come up at all people probably forgot he worked with harvey so he may stay quiet until he's asked
RS, I have mixed feelings about the reactions to the Harvey Weinstein story. I do believe that the things reported about have happened, and it´s shocking to say that I think many people are not surprised (including me), but a comment has to be very thoughtfully considered. There is quite a big pressure on especially the A-listers now to comment and every single word, comma and exclamation mark will be turned around and upside down to try and find out whether the statement is meant to be understood as it is published or whether there is some between-the-line-meaning. So not reacting results in accusations of purposely overlooking or tolerating of something "you must have known working in the biz for so long", whilst when people react they are accused of the same. I´ve seen that a lot on twitter.
I never had anything to do with showbiz but I grew up hearing stories about casting couches and the difficulties for women to start a career in showbiz. But having my own experiences in my "world" I know how difficult it is - as a victim but also as a witness - to do something about it.
I hope there will be changes, even though my doubt that this will ever happen is almost as big. There are - I am sure - so many people in the business who abuse their power in many ways.... we´ll have to wait and see what comes out in the end.
On a different note, is anyone surprised that Stronger is not shown on the NYFF? I know they cannot do EVERY festival, but I´m still a bit surprised....
It feels like a turning point but we have to all be vigilant that things really do change, in Hollywood and in other industries.
I don't know if Jake has to issue a statement, but he should be prepared to answer questions about it. If Stronger has any play during awards season, he will be asked about it more than once. Also, Jake has made it a point to say he wants his production company to be place where women can make films and that makes films about women. So that might factor in, as well.
I think they didn't show Stronger at NYFF because it was already in theaters, Diana. Regrettably, it is not in that many theaters in the US currently. What a botched job on the release. A real shame.
On a positive note, I went to see it yesterday afternoon, and there was a good crowd for a holiday mid-afternoon showing. And it was a great audience, laughing heartily. And there was definite sniffling.
Yay - here's the BFI talk.
Loved the BFI Talk - intelligent questions and wonderful thoughtful answers. Has anyone been to these soirees with Jake before? Does he actually spend time or is it a quick in and out appearance?
Thank you for posting the link for the BFI talk, UV! I should´ve gone to bed when I saw it but I couldn´t resist and had to watch it. I really loved it, some of what Jake said was new to me and I was even more happy when I learned a couple of things I had wanted to know and thought I´d never find out.
The award season will be full of HW I fear - I am somehow expecting even more to come out now, and not just about HW. He surely wasn´t and isn´t the only one.
I would really like to know why Stronger isn´t released in more theaters. It makes sense that it is not shown at the NYFF because it´s already in theaters. I hadn´t thought of that.
Something to cheer you up, someone dined next to Jake in London yesterday. I thought the tweet was really sweet:
@darya_dee
JAKE GYLLENHAAL SAT NEXT TO ME AT DINNER TONIGHT guys i was mere inches away from him he is beautiful and sweet and quiet and i'm in love
he was by himself having sushi! he facetimed someone at one point then spent the rest of the meal reading a script out loud SO CUTE
(reply) Omg that is so PRECIOUS!! If he FaceTime his mom I'm 💀 You couldn't tell who? Haha. You could hear him reading a script? Were that close?
idk he literally whispered the whole time even to the waiters but i did hear him say 'how's lisa' yes i was RIGHT next to him!
Stronger isn't being released in more theaters because it's not making any money at the box office.
Neither is Blade Runner.
Gosling and Villeneuve's movie is flopping, opening on weekend with only 2 mil more than Prince of Persia. In 5 days BR "climbed" to 37 M, exactly what POP did in 5 days seven years ago in less theatres. But no one is blaming and mocking Gosling like they did with Jake.
With 150 M production budget and 130 M marketing budget, Blade Runner is tanking like Titanic and yet is screened in over 4000 theatres. Some failures aren't made public while others are being touted over and over.
I understand your point but you really can't compare Blade Runner to POP.
Blade Runner is being raved by critics and is in discussion for awards (director and technical awards)
POP was reviewed horribly and was accused of whitewashing. People still bring up the whitewashing on social media.
BR's bad box office is getting a pass because it's a well respected film, but the length of it (nearly 3hrs) and subject matter isn't appealing to the general public. The same can't be said for POP. That's why people aren't blaming or mocking BR/Gosling the way they did with Jake/POP.
Dutch reviewers raved about 'Blade Runner'! And I'll forever have a soft spot for Denis Villeneuve - if only because of the amazing 'Enemy' :)
Jake was spotted at the airport a couple hours ago. Back to NYC?
Think they should have done a limited release in Boston, NYC or opened at 1500+ screens instead. Some people who wanted to see the movie couldn't because it was not opened in their city. But that was not my call or any fan's call. Box office is not great for most original screen plays and have not been for awhile. Perhaps releasing more clips spread out and still of the quick rush of promo 2 weeks before a film and then nothing.
Jake has a history of bad promotion on films, he needs social media because he's not yet a box office draw on name only. I think the CK promo would be a good for him because he is not widely known to people on smaller screens.
I hope the rumors about George being a theatrical release starring Jake is just a rumor. That really has no audience outside the theater world. Maybe a live TV special?
But Jake keeps gaining fans thru streaming of his movies and DVDS. I wish Jake's growing audience would come out to the theaters though. Jeremy Renner's Wind River is doing great box office wise but Renner does super hero movies. I stopped expecting box office from Jake, he has not had one since Source Code, I think.
And Blade Runner will make money overseas just like POP. Its just too long for ADD Americans.
This is a letter that sent out as a pdf to quite a few people (as far as I´ve read), even to some who haven´t seen the movie or written about it! One of them tweeted that Stronger was screened only for two weeks in his city in Missouri and he didn´t go see it.
Still, it´s a nice letter...

Letter from Jake
I hope there will be an awards campaign for "Stronger". I think it would increase the chance that "Stonger" will still get a theatrical release in Germany.
I have the feeling that this could be the beginning of an awards campaign, not to say that I think it´s pretty obvious. Stay in the memory of the ones who have seen the movie and get the ones who haven´t been to go and see and review about it.
It´s not too bad that this mail has been sent to people who haven´t even seen the movie yet.... in some way, it´s quite clever. There is a risk it could backfire, but just a little one.
There is a review on the german "Filmstarts"-page, 4 out of 5 stars. Jake´s performance is described as Oscar-worthy (like Nightcrawler), and Tatiana as "maybe even better".
I have the feeling that this could be the beginning of an awards campaign, not to say that I think it´s pretty obvious.
Well, yes. I think the letter would have made more sense if "Stronger" had been a breakout hit at the box office thanks to critics' support. Actually "Stronger" has gone largely unnoticed despite of the very favorable reviews.
if that letter had been sent to people who had actually seen/reviewed stronger it would've been a nice gesture. the fact that it got sent to people who didn't review it or write about just looks bad, imo. and now it's become something of a joke on film twitter.
and now it's become something of a joke on film twitter.
It became a joke because it makes him look desperate for the Oscar.
I guess I have looked at the wrong places on Twitter because I haven't seen mention of this.
Jake's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't....sigh....
It's a joke on AwardsWatch. It's not that much of a joke on Film Twitter. The original tweeter, David Ehrlich, even said that he has now watched Stronger and thought it was "very very good." Others just made mild jokes or said good things. This is hardly an international embarrassment.
Jake/his people should have definitely confirmed that the people getting the letters had actually, you know, written positively about the movie. But I don't think it's a scandal. That said, they need to tighten their game.
Was sent alone or with a screener? Would make more sense if they sent out to accompany a screener
Anon, it's here: twitter

"It became a joke because it makes him look desperate for the Oscar".
(Meredith Grey's voice) Seriously? What idiot would claim this? Since everybody knows that critics don't vote for Oscars, only Academy members do. From their respective guilds.
Anyone who makes this claim is either clueless about awards, or eager to belittle Jake from sheer desperation that he may be nominated this time. Imagine the ugly meltdown on AW blog. They made voodoo dolls to jinxs Jake, that's how pathetic they are. They mocked and cursed him for voting for Audiard in Cannes. This year, Jake made a movie with the French auteur. Moral of the story? Let the haters laugh like idiots while you follow your path. You'll have the last (smart, successful) laugh.
Journalists vote for BFCA, LAFCA and other 20 something critics awards. These aren't even precursors for the Big League. (Jake will likely be on their nomination lists, as he's been several times before.)
This isn't the first time Jake sent thank you letters to critics. He did the same in 2013 after the raves for Nightcrawler, and they appreciated it (which is what Ehrlich mentioned to a poster). It could also be the reason why some letters were delivered yesterday to the "wrong" critics. Maybe the assistants used the list from 2013. No big deal: this way, the reluctant critics who thought Stronger wasn't worth their "precious time" may decide to watch it now - and discover a surprisingly good movie. Case in point: David Ehrlich.
no, Anon 1:33. There's another option, and calling people idiots neither strengthens your argument nor elevates your opinion. There's a lot of good information in your post, but it gets overshadowed by what I feel is a hostile tone. The world is a shit mess right now, and this friendly blog is a safe haven, a place where I hope we can keep being respectful to one another and continue to demonstrate our intelligence and just be kind.
Film critics, especially top tier critics, generate buzz and assign a level of credibility to a film and a performance and even though they obviously don't get to vote in an Oscar race, they do have a lot of influence and are often insiders in the film industry so their opinion matters during awards season.
IMO Jake doesn't look desperate. I agree with UV. Jake needs his A team, and they need to tighten up their game. This is not a major faux pas, I think it seems like a nice gesture that lost something in its execution and looks sloppy.
Well said, Bobbyanna.
"Actually "Stronger" has gone largely unnoticed despite of the very favorable reviews."
:( And so another one of Jake's movies isn't the success it deserved to be. I had hoped it would have been huge for him :/
I was gonna try to see stronger one more time, just checked in my area and it's already gone from all the theaters :(
maybe if the awards go in jake's favor they'll do a re-release
oh, I agree, Anon 6:22. It came through so fast. I did manage to see it twice, but I was very disappointed that it was in so few theatres and passed through so quickly. I'm also hoping it gets re-released. : )
I´ve read a few times now, that the movie has already gone from several theaters and even people who would´ve wanted to go and see it were simply too late to do so. I have also read, though, that there were not many people there, sometimes in two cases it was only 3 people at a matinee screening!
I do understand the owners of the cinemas in this case. You have to make money and that means you don´t necessarily need sold out screenings all the time, but you have to sell enough tickets!
I am wondering.... could it be that the plan is to release it in theaters it HASN´T been to yet at some point, I am thinking, like, closer to awards season? Not necessarily because of the awards but maybe because the sheer "award-talk" could make more people get curious and go see it?
On a scale from 1-10, how desperate for this movie to become a box office success does that sound? lol

Wasn't 'Nightcrawler' re-released (or re-screened for critics) when awards season came closer? Or 'Southpaw'? Or both of them, I'm not sure ;)
I haven't been able to go see 'Stronger' yet. It plays at one cinema close by, but there's only one screening a day and at such an inconvenient time... Due to my move, I have very little time - I might wait until it's out on DVD... Sorry Jake! ;)
The other possibility is that the movie ie released for streaming or DVD by the end of the year.
I think DVD or streaming is more likely. And it makes sense. That's what The Grand Budapest Hotel did in 2014. It opened in March and was available for streaming or on premium channels (can't remember which) in December. It refreshed Academy voters minds and got 9 Oscar nominations. I'm not saying that Stronger will get a lot of nominations with this strategy, but I think it would increase its chances. RH
From IndieWire and good old David Ehrlich, who does really like Jake.. Denis Villeneuve Movies Ranked from Worst to Best
7. “Prisoners” (2013)
"Collaborating with legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins and grounding each scene with enough gravitas to sink the average movie, he used a trio of exceptional performances (from Jackman, Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal, and definitely not Melissa Leo) to investigate how hatred can convince people of a righteousness that blinds them to the truth."
2. “Enemy” (2013)
"Remember the guy who made “Maelström”? Well, he’s still in there somewhere, and he’s doing great. An obvious successor to Villeneuve’s second feature (he’s even referred to these frenzied modern fantasies as “brothers”), “Enemy” is the weirdest film the director has ever made, and also the most personal.
Boldly adapted from José Saramago’s “The Double” and quick to go off the deep end, the movie stars two Jake Gyllenhaals (both of them brilliant). One is Adam Bell, an introverted college history professor with a very pregnant girlfriend (played by the great Sarah Gadon). The other is a hotheaded actor named Anthony Claire, who sees an opportunity to have a little fun with his doppelgänger’s wife (Mélanie Laurent). Sex, car crashes, and the scariest penultimate shot in movie history ensue.
At heart, “Enemy” is a story of self-destruction, a jaundiced nightmare about how hurting the people we love can split us in two. For once, however, Villeneuve has made a movie that isn’t quite as simple as it sounds. So much of his career has been spent trying (and failing) to disentangle action from its meaning, but only through making a film about failure was he able to pull that off. His least interesting movies focus on ideals, while his most interesting ones hone in on the obstacles that prevent us from living up to them. “Enemy” is so unnerving because it redirects Villeneuve’s social concerns back towards the individual subconscious. In its own poisoned way, it asks how we can shape the world when we can’t even control ourselves. In lieu of an answer, it mines a deep, lingering horror from the feeling that we can’t."
I just smiled reading your post, Anon at 3:32. David Ehrlich messed up the characters in Enemy, but never mind.... I love that movie. If only I had more time right now I´d love to watch it again but I´d love to discuss it with a couple of people afterwards even more.
Jake has been at the Headstrong Benefit Gala in NYC last night:
Headstrong Benefit Gala red carpet
I'm (nearly) always ready to duscuss 'Enemy', Diana. It's my second fave Jake film. If only I had more time as well... ;)
Thanks for your post, Anon!
"Stronger" will be released in Germany on July 26th, 2018 (!). For real.
Wow, Hagen! That stinks :( I hope you can get a chance to see it on some streaming service sooner than that. Maybe Amazon will have it.
I hope you can get a chance to see it on some streaming service sooner than that. Maybe Amazon will have it.
That would be nice. Hopefully "Wildlife" will roll out internationally a bit more quickly than "Stronger". :-)
I´ve just seen that, Hagen! Holy sh*t! That´s REALLY late!
The list is obviously not up to date, but I thought it would be interesting to see the release dates in other countries:

Denis Villeneuve Movies Ranked from Worst to Best
Enemy is one of Jake's best movies. The second best performance of his career.
I hope more people will discover this movie.
I sent an email to you, UV.
For me, the second best performance of Jake's career is in Prisoners.
Nightcrawler being the absolute best performance of his career and best movie.
I may reconsider the second place when I see Stronger. I have a feeling it's better then Prisoners and Enemy combined.
This is beautiful. I hope he gets to experience this!

The reaction to the vid has been really good so far!

That is a stunning child. And Mom and Dad aren't bad either. You can tell Jake was taken with the little girl.
That brought tears to my eyes! Beautiful! And yes, the little girl is absolutely stunning.
Cary Fukunaga directed the video...
Beautiful video!
The video is wonderful.
Here is a interview with some more info on how this all happened:
interview with W magazine
I love the video, what a beautiful campaign :)
Saw Stronger twice before it disappeared from the theaters near me. I wish it did better BO. Great reviews and an incredible performance from Jake, one of his best. Hopefully it will get a limited re-release around awards time, it would be a shame if his performance is forgotten about.
The video is so beautiful and touching! Gorgeous.

The ad is beautiful. I hope the next one is a little more on the sexy than adorable side. If there is a next one. It's been fun to see the reaction to the ad. Mostly positive, happily.
Nice table shots at the Eternity kickoff last week.
I've read that some people are disappointed Jake isn't starring in a Calvin Klein underwear ad :)))) Maybe next time? ;)
maybe 10 years ago but i don't think that's the image jake wants to have at this point in his career
Saw the ad twice on tv already. Both shorter 30 second spots.
Also, from Yahoo News <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/style/jake-gyllenhaal-face-fresh-calvin-klein-fragrances-gets-frank-hollywoods-dirty-secrets-190230664.html“
At my company, as a mandate, my partner and I have an equal amount of films, television, and theater that are being made by both men and women and starring both men and women. That is a mandate at our company,” Gyllenhaal says when asked how he plans to move forward after bombshell allegations of sexual abuse surfaced against Hollywood’s biggest producer, Harvey Weinstein.
“[Sexual harassment] has been around for a long time, but there’s a massive paradigm shift in the last two or three weeks,” Gyllenhaal says. “It’s essential and it’s too long coming. [The shift has] been necessary for a long time, and it’s incredible to see and very important.”
“What I’ve learned through the years is that this is a mandate for the company too — those with great experience who sometimes don’t have as many opportunities can bring incredible insight into a space,” he says, talking about not only sexism within Hollywood, but also of ageism. “Those who are young and hungry and have a new vision can also bring that same vision to those who’ve had a lot of experience.”
Smells like change is in the air."
Sorry, here is the LINK to the article.
An indirect response to the controversy. Glad to see Jake say something.
I still haven't seen the ad. According to this gossip video, CK wanted Jake to be the underwear model, replacing Justin Bieber, but Jake said no. Truth, fiction? Who knows.
I am not watching much tv atm so I don´t know whether the ad is on over here at all.
About CK underwear... I just can´t see Jake doing it. To be more precise, when I heard he was doing something for CK I was absolutely sure it wouldn´t be modelling as a underwear model.
I am curious about Wildlife... and wondering when we get to hear any news on that.
Jake at the event for Edible Schoolyard 10.24.17
I saw the ad now twice on Bravo and once on E! Haven't seen them on any other channels yet. Just FYI...
Yay!

guess jake does want awards, hollywood film awards are usually bought by publicists in order to boost awards chances
That´s so cool.... have you ever wondered where he keeps all his prices? I´ve heard the funniest stories about where people keep them...
I´ve read that Stronger gets a cinematic release in France on Feb 2nd.
Look at this....
<a href="https://twitter.com/jbbgyllenhaal/status/923179366036602881>Jake at the reception of edible schoolyard</a>
Yeah, sadly, that award doesn't mean much. But let's hope it's the start of a long parade of nominations.
Someone on FB saw Jake on their flight to Italy last night.Which could explain why the Edible Schoolyard event was so early. It kind of looked like Jake remembered the event at the last minute!
An indirect response to the controversy. Glad to see Jake say something.
At least he's not saying he didn't know. But I still think at some point someone will ask him about Weinstein, after all they worked together in Southpaw.
guess jake does want awards,
He never said he didn't want awards. Whoever was in his fadom during Brokeback, knows that he campaigned a lot in 2005/2006.
Look, I don't like actors acting desperate, I even make fun of it, I confess that I laugh when I read this news, but I will not deny I will be happy if is the way to the nomination he deserves so much after being snubbed by Nightcrawler.
I agree Monica! He has more than earned it. : )
Pics of Jake in Italy. Crema, I think, which is where Luca Guadagnino lives. Someone said Jake was in Crema to see him. A few FBers also report seeing Jake in Crema. There's also a rumor that Xavier Dolan will be in Rio with Jake.
Who knows?
i hope jake stays away from xavier his comments about jake were inappropriate
I'm sure Jake didn't mind, Xavier is talented and sexy.
so inappropriate sexual comments are okay if the person is talented and sexy?
No, but Dolan isn't in any position of power over Jake, so the offense is mild. And one assumes if Jake took any offense, he and Xavier Dolan worked it out when they were on the Cannes jury.
Jake in Crema. I think this is the place.
Google translate is fun for this trip: Crema gets translated as cream or coffee. And the chef for that restaurant is named Stefano Fagioli, or Stefano Beans.
Thanks for the pics, and the puns, UV.
Yes, Luca Guadagnino lives in a
17th-century palazzo with fabulous paintings in Crema (Lombardia).
And in this photo the man with the bald spot (R) looks a lot like Luca Guadagnino. Same hair, same baldness, same height. For the ones not familiar with LG: a recent photo.
Since Jake will co-produce Rio, it makes sense they'd meet again (after TIFF) especially in Crema, where Luca shot parts of Suspiria and Call me by your name. They may film scenes in Crema for "Rio", too. (Besides the scenes in Sri Lanka.)
Saturday evening, "Stronger" will be screened at the Rome Film Fest and Jake will present it.
Sunday afternoon, 17:30 (11:30 NY time) Close Encounters (Incontri Ravvicinati), a conversation with Jake, hosted by the festival's artistic director Antonio Monda
As for Dolan, I think he's a brilliant filmaker but a bratty, impudent young man. He'll be less provocative when he'll grow up. IMO, more inappropriate than Dolan's words were the gross online comments, but what else is new?
"so inappropriate sexual comments are okay if the person is talented and sexy?"
There was nothing inappropriate about Xavier's comments.
Just because you didn't like them doesn't make them inappropriate.
The comments were inappropriate, no matter if it was a man or woman who said it. He said something intimate and sexual, we know people do that, but we don't need to know. Now, we don't know if Jake knew, if he knew, he pretends not, moves on.
Xavier Dolan is a talented young man. I've seen nearly all of his films - they're not all great, but he sure has achieved a lot for a guy his age.
"There was nothing inappropriate about Xavier's comments."
Agreed. He didn't say anything rude or nasty about Jake. Okay, it was sexual, but I've read far, far worse online comments over the years. I can imagine the two of them on the Cannes jury might have been awkward for Xavier, though ;) I can remember one particular moment between them, a joke, during a press conference that made me wonder if Jake knew. I think he does. But it doesn't really matter, does it?
"There's also a rumor that Xavier Dolan will be in Rio with Jake."
Oh. Hang on. You mean Rio the movie... I was wondering :) I'd love for Jake and Xavier to be in a film together!
My guess that Luca Guadagnino was the man with the bold spot in this Jake photo was right.
Crema Oggi confirmed it today with 2 clearer photos of Jake and Luca
photo 1
photo 2
Crema reporters have no idea about "Rio", nor about Jake's presence in Italy for Roma Film Festival, so they were left wondering what movie could JG and LG plan to shoot in their town. When they noticed the paps, Luca and Jake got up and left.
Guadagnino e Jake Gyllenhaal ieri in città.
Last we've heard, "Rio" was slated to start production early 2018. After the Oscars (?), one could assume, since Guadagnino's movie is heralded as a big contender for best picture.
Jake making a movie with Guadagnino is a dream come true, similar to Jake making a movie with Jacques Audiard. IMO, he has the sense and sensibility of European actors.
unwanted sexual comments are rude and nasty. would you defend if he said it about a woman? or if a female director said it about a man? an actress recently spoke about her experience with a director telling her that he'd masturbated to photos of her. is that okay? it's not about power or if a man says it to a man. it's inappropriate either way.
I agree that at this moment in time (Weinstein, Cosby) it's tricky to talk about this subject and I don't want to get into an argument, but I'm quite sure Xavier said it in jest.
Dang, he looks good.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BazDdOuHeBh/?tagged=jakegyllenhaal
Wow. He sure has upped his game as far as wardrobe is concerned. I love this look!
Jake looked really good today, on both occasions. I loved to see him in light colors, I think that suits him very well, too.
Finally found the press conference, haven´t watched it yet, though... time for bed!

The current status of “The Man Who Made It Snow” is unknown:

Status unknown: Some projects have been halted or otherwise called into question since the Harvey Weinstein allegations. Others were announced long ago and little is known about their status.
“The Man Who Made It Snow”: Weinstein Co. bought the rights to make a biopic about Max Mermelstein — an American drug smuggler who for years dealt with high-level members of Colombia’s biggest cocaine cartel — in 2013. Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal were set to produce, with Gyllenhaal also starring.

I don't know who's jake's new stylist, but hey, is doing great work. He looks gorgeous!
I think "The Man Who Made It Snow" will not happen, if it happens, it will be with other actors.
I hope you're right Monica. I'm not real enthusiastic about the project. It just seems too similar to other Narco/Cartel movies.
Off Topic:
Don't know how things are for the rest of you, but I moved south to Atlanta, Georgia about 6 months ago from Michigan, which is located in the northern part of the Midwestern United States. Tonight I finally put the furnace on! It's 37 right now in Atlanta, and will get colder during the night. It's warmer up north than it is here. :(
(And no I haven't seen Hugh Jackman. Wouldn't even know where to look.; ) )
I'm not excited to see “The Man Who Made It Snow” either. There are other more promising projects for Jake.
The Hollywood Reporter: Rome Film Fest: Jake Gyllenhaal Reflects on His Career Since 'Donnie Darko'
And Gyllenhaal delighted the Roman crowd by telling them his favorite film was Federico Fellini’s La Strada, because it was the film that made his father want to be a filmmaker, and thus influencing him to become an actor. “So I guess I thank this movie, because if he hadn’t fallen in love with that movie, then I probably wouldn’t be here,” said Gyllenhaal.
Gyllenhaal was lastly asked the common question of choosing a director he would like to work with today. He chose Pedro Almodovar, who famously said he turned down an opportunity to direct Brokeback Mountain, because his version would have been too sexualized for studios. Ang Lee won the Oscar for best director award in 2006 for the film.
Almodóvar hasn't filmed a movie in English yet.

interviews Jeff and Jake
Thanks for all the clips and news items. Jake did look great all weekend.
There has been a lot of grumbling about Jake's not doing the red carpet yesterday. It seemed weird to do a red carpet before a "conversation," but I think a lot of people waited a long time to see Jake. Not sure if he cancelled or just never knew he was supposed to do it, but that was too bad. I hope he didn't cancel at the last minute.
Here's another interview. It is good to see Jake and Jeff together again!
I'm ambivalent about The Man Who Made It Snow.
How fun would it be to see Jake in an Almodovar movie?!
Bobbyanna, I hope it warmed up today. It was very windy here today. Lots of leaves blowing around.

Indiewire: Jake Gyllenhaal on the Beautiful ‘Absurdity’ of Playing a Real-Life Character Whose Story Was Still Unfolding
Couple tweet spotting Jake in LA last night. Looks like he's already there for the Hollywood Awards and the SAG talk on Monday.
Thanks for posting that link, Hagen. One of the interesting tidbits:
For an actor who has put so much time into thinking about his process, Gyllenhaal found there to be something so beautiful and organic about making “Stronger” that he expressed genuine uncertainty how he’d approach character preparation for his next film with writer-director Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler”) early next year.
So I guess that film is the next one up. Looking forward to hearing more about it!
Real Sal, there are tweets that Jake is at a LACMA event tonight that Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto and Naomi Campbell are also attending. Jake and Jared?
Jake is also doing a couple of appearances at American Cinematheque while in LA. On 11/8, there will be a discussion after a viewing of Stronger. On 11/9, Jake will introduce a double bill of Donnie Darko and Nightcrawler.
Thanks for the info, UV :)
He's so busy! It must be tiring only being home for a little while at a time. I couldn't do it - worked at the same place for 8 years, this homebody has got her routine down to a pat lol
No other pictures from the LACMA event? Maybe that wasn't Jake talking to Jared.
Jake was there. http://wwd.com/eye/parties/kim-kardashian-leonardo-dicaprio-lacma-art-film-gala-11042574/
No photos. He needs to stop avoiding the red carpet at these things to get exposure if he wants that nomination.
I don't know about whether there's any real value in walking the red caret when it comes to the awards season networking, but there was an impressive list of directors and producers at the event. I'd love to see Jake walk the red carpet and pose for other photos at these gatherings, but he rarely seems to do that.
Jake has walked a lot of red carpets lately. He was at the Hollywood Film Awards tonight and he walked the red carpet.
I don't think missing the red carpet means anything. As Bobbyanna said, it's more important to be at the event and making/renewing connections.
Speaking of which... new post.
