Event Fall

Event Spring 2017 - Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford recording Move on for the Sunday in the Park with George cast album:

It has been a busy autumn for Jake Gyllenhaal, with film festivals, screenings, conversations, presentations, perfume ads and more. And now an award.

Jake was given the Hollywood Film Awards Best Actor trophy for his performance as Jeff Bauman in Stronger. May it be the beginning of a fruitful awards season. We live in hope...

A beautiful speech by Jake. You can feel how much this experience has meant to him. I hope it's not the last time he gets the chance to give a speech for playing this role!

From the NY Times Holiday Gift Guide:

Cast Album Worth the Wait
In last season’s revival of “Sunday in the Park With George,” Jake Gyllenhaal sang his heart out as Georges Seurat. Now, on the long-anticipated recording, he sings your heart out, too. Annaleigh Ashford is emerald-cut perfection as his reluctant muse.

Reminder that Jake will be at two Stronger screenings/discussions this week, as well as introducing a Donnie Darko/Nightcrawler double bill. As Real Sal alluded in the last post, it's exhausting just thinking about Jake's schedule.

Also, in this interview, you can see Jake and Lica Guadagnino chatting and hugging.

What a beautiful, beautiful acceptance speech. It made me cry. I was sorry to learn Jeff was having difficulties, but not surprised. I'm glad he's resting , getting therapy, and...that he had a chance to go to Italy with Jake. : )

I'm going to watch Jake's speech tonight.

Esquire: Jake Gyllenhaal’s Not Worried About Looking Cool (But He Looks Cooler Than Ever)

UltraViolet said...

I think the Edible Schoolyard folks might be a little annoyed by Jake's assertion that he dresses to honor the person or event :) But still a nice Esquire article.

I added two youtube videos, longer versions of which can be seen here. One is an interview; the other has Jake and other celebs reacting to the Weinstein issues.

Also, Jake seems to have forced Jeff to get an iPhone, lol.

I can't believe James Corden resorted to the "no one knows how to say Gyllenhaal" shtick in his monologue at the awards. Jake didn't seem too impressed, either.

UltraViolet said...

Bobbyanna, it was hard to hear that Jeff is having issues. Jake really did seem to be looking after him in Rome. Jeff did make a congratulatory FB post.

Also, I'm not sure this was posted previously: The Stronger DVD comes out on 12/19. Happy Birthday to all of us!

Yes, I'd love to see him work with Amy again! I'd also love to see Jake work with Emily Blunt! She's a favorite of mine, too. I saw Denis Villeneuve at one of the events Jake attended this past weekend. Not sure if it was the LACMA event or the Hollywood Awards event.
I'm looking forward to their next collaboration.

Seemed to be an Arclight screening yesterday with Jake and Tatiana:

Such a “Hollywood” afternoon. And yes, Jake Gyllenhaal is as dreamy in person as he is on screen.

When I saw the picture of Jake & Angelina I wondered if Jake was facetiming with Jeff. : ) Maybe he was making introductions.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Amy is going to campaign for Jake. I know she's never won an Oscar but she does get nominated a lot and people love her. It helps to have that kind of support.

Diana said...

There is a lot of combinations of actors and directors I would be excited about to see Jake working with. I loved Enemy and Zodiac, so I was really happy to learn that Jake is going to work with Denis again.

I always love interviews with Jenelle, this one was another one I really enjoyed. I like lengthy conversations/interviews and I love to hear Jake elaborate something and (sometimes) go deeper into whatever the question is.

Generally I always feel it´s a shame that many interviews are so short so when an interesting question/subject comes up there is no time to REALLY talk about it.

I wish I could post some more but my brain is so stuffed with other things atm that I only have the time to read through new posts.

Anonymous said...

It's Oscar season and Academy screeners are happening everywhere in LA and NYC. I think Amy turned up to show support for a friend as actors often to at screeners. Also she's got no movies in contention this year and she's filming in LA anyway so it just a bonus to come and show support. She's not going to be campaigning on Jake's behalf or anything.

I think I'm repeating some of Diana's links below. I also just found this video, which doesn't cover the whole Q&A but has 24 minutes of it.

Wonderful night out to see @StrongerTheFilm and a Q&A with Jake Gyllenhaal. I absolutely loved hearing about the makeup & prosthetic work in the movie! Go see it!! It will make you cry, laugh and thank god for your beautiful life.

A little boy in the audience tonight at the Q&A after the screening of @StrongerTheFilm at the @SidGrauman asked Jake Gyllenhaal what made him become an actor? Jake's response.. his sister. @mgyllenhaal #myheart ❤️

How much Jake Gyllenhaal loves Jeff Bauman is truly inspirational. #Stronger

Stronger is an incredibly inspiring and touching film. So many goosebumps. Go see it.

It was nice to see Jake Gyllenhaal live and hear him talk about his career. One of me favorite films of his, is the under rated, yet offensive, Bubble Boy, which he jokingly mentioned in absolution that there will never be a sequel unfortunately

What do you think when you watch those scenes?

Good question, screening man.

Do characters stay with you? Another angle. And another.

Using special effects and prosthetics in the movie

Three very short clips here:

"Stronger" after Q&A with Jake Gyllenhaal❤️ loved him even more after his no bulls*** sharing and witty funny quirky so real and grounded self.

Another clip:

Another surreal LA life moment as Thomas & Trinity get to ask #jakegyllenhaal a question after watching him star in Stronger Thomas told us he had to do it cuz ‘Trinity literally froze up’. But she can check off meeting her biggest crush while Thomas charmed everyone in the theatre including JG and they bonded over #sisterlove

Someone who was at the ArcLight screening Tuesday:

castingbypatrickbacacsaLoved Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming @strongerthefilm . Also loved listening to him talk about this true story based in the tragic Boston Marathon bombing. Jake and @tatianamaslany both turn in soulful performances. Jake will surely get nominated for this challenging role!

And a Facebook account of the SAG screening:

Loved every second with Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany after the screening of their stunning Stronger, the film, at SAG-AFTRA Foundation - grateful as hell to have borne witness to the movie and the conversation. Cannot imagine either actor will denied innumerable nominations. For my money (?) it’s Jake for the win. His portrayal of Jeff Bauman, post the Boston Marathon bombing, is nothing short of genius. He transforms every molecule, becoming Jeff before our eyes. And ears. Hard to spot Jake in there. The Q&A was crazy fun, culminating with Jake Facetiming Jeff, giving us the opportunity to audience “hello” and cheer him.

Stronger - two remarkable prosthetic legs up!

Pics from Jake's Instagram feed. I respectfully did not snap but had an even better, dead center vantage point. Had a moment to tell him how much Samantha loved him in Sunday in The Park With George.

He's pretty damn breath-taking, especially when he fixes his eyes and words right atcha.

Will not be posting any pics from the SAG-AFTRA event last night because I cannot believe the shirt Jake wore. I hope it was for charity, somehow. Or he lost a bet. Looks like Adam Sandler was the only one who could stare down the shirt and pose with Jake. Tatiana had to.

Looks like the Donnie Darko screening was fun - with a surprise appearance by Frank:

I was bitching to a friend about a Curb Your Enthusiasm-style social awkwardness. Didn't realize I was next to Jakey G. He laughed and said something like, "You're right, that's super annoying" before dematerializing into the subway.

Jake Gyllenhaal spent nearly an hour shaking the hands of every extra and thanking us individually for spending our day filming an auditorium scene from Love & Other Drugs.

@BAKKOOONN Dwayne Johnson is the real deal, Jake Gyllenhaal a gentleman, David Gordon Green a hero, and Lenny Clarke the greatest. Yes! They are the positives in some shitty news lately!

Gregory Ellwood
Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Ben Affleck (yep), Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, Kristen Stewart - just the first that come to mind - are incredibly warm and kind. Unlike some actors with the press they never forget you've met them 5-10 times before like a normal human being would.

Growing up in Los Angeles I've met my share tons of horror stories from working in retail and food service but Sarah Silverman was a pleasure, so sweet. Once Phillip Seymore Hoffman read the Iliad with me at the coffee shop I worked at. I was studying. Jake Gyllenhaal is nice as well. Matthew Rhys was an very polite customer at same coffee shop, as well as Christopher Eccleston, Mena Suvari always friendly.

I did something I rarely do: After seeing the latest Sunday in the Park with George revival for 2nd time I was so moved that I staged door it. I had a beautiful exchange with Jake Gyllenhaal where we spoke of our mutual admiration of Sondheim. Jake was lovely.

Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brie Larson, Damien Chazelle, Claire Foy-the celebrities that come to mind at first. Are the sweetest, softest(word choice is A+), kindest people I know.

sidebar: to the original question, yes famous actor Jake Gyllenhaal does give good Christmas presents.

I would love for them to work together again (Amy and Jake) but looking at both their IMDB 'In Development' or "Announced" movies bit not sure for which movie.

IMDb only has announced projects. There are tons of movies behind the scenes that we don't know about. For example, Jake said he tried to work with Amy before NA several times. But the only movie we heard was PSH's movie.

Ooh I would love if they could do that movie again as intended. Ezekiel Moss or something like that wasn't it? Could dedicated it to PSH.

Thanks for the updates :) he sure is a busy man! Another conversation on the 19th in NYC and then not sure what's after that. 4 weeks until the Golden Globe nominations. I'm really hoping (and I know we say this every year) that something comes his way - he seems to be hustling more than the past.

All of you are so damn good at giving the latest on Jake that by the time I have finished to read and see all the wonders that you post my free time is up :)
After seeing almost every interview, talk show appearance, festivals, awards, etc ,I was truly excited to see Stronger and I finally did, and it was all that I expected and more. The movie was especial to me because I relate to some of the things Jeff went trough and Jake performance was amazing, I´ve watch first hand how people with amputated limbs react to the first impact and the physical pain they feel and Jake portrayed that to perfection and deserves every recognition. I will try to stay more active and less of a lurker.

Wonder if Jeff Bauman is still in Florida

Unknown said...

Bobbyanna and Diana thank you. When I was watching stronger with two co-workers we were amazed by the little subtle things Jake brought to this performance that look exactly like Jeff would move, the way he moved from the wheelchair to the bed moving the upper part of the legs exactly the same way an amputate would, the way he stand up for the first time moving his torso to the front, little things that required a lot of study to look real, what a magnificent work, he deserves all the recognition. On other note he seemed really happy in the interviewees, like he found himself and who he is, there's a different glow and a serenity.
But UV you are right that shirt is horrible, there is no excuse, maybe he was tired, maybe he was sleep deprive and wasn't seeing right but still is unforgivable.

UltraViolet said...

Paula! How great to see you. It's interesting to hear your reaction to the movie, given your own experiences with similar situations. Like Bobbyanna and so many others, I had the feeling that Jake and the movie were doing service to those experiences, but it's good to hear it confirmed.

About the Florida event:

Naples resident and LPGA Tour player Mo Martin wasn't feeling well Wednesday.

"I have a stomach ache from laughing at Jamie Foxx," Martin said with a chuckle after playing in the CME Group Tour Championship's pro-am at Tiburón Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort.

Martin wasn't watching Foxx in a movie. The actor/comedian was one of three celebrities -- actors Halle Berry and Jake Gyllenhaal were the others -- at the CME Group's Global Financial Leadership Conference's gala at the Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort on Tuesday night.

Golf Channel personality and analyst David Feherty served as the moderator.

"I thought the whole panel of actors added a lot," Martin said. "Jake was just super-sensitive, had a lot of intelligent things to add. So did Halle. She's stunning. Everybody was staring at her. She brought up some sensitive subjects.

"... Then Jamie just stole the show. He made people laugh, but he made some great points as well. Then he played the piano."

I guess it looks like Jake is seriously campaigning for Stronger this awards season. I've never seen so much of him and he seems enthusiastic for this movie more than any other I can recall. But maybe there is also something else going on. I read yesterday, that Ben Affleck is not making anymore Batman movies, and they are actively looking for a replacement. Yes, I know. But Jake's name was prominently mentioned along with several others. It will be interesting to see how all that plays out. Ben certainly wasn't "iconic" in the role.

Anonymous said...

You might be on to something bobbyanna.

I also think maybe Jake is working so hard to get these nominations for Jeff, in some way. I think he wants more people to know about him and his story.

bobbyanna said...

I agree, Anon 11:39. I think Jeff plays a big role in Jake's decision to be more active and really go for it. I wonder if Jeff was still in Florida when Jake made his appearance at that conference. If so, maybe Jake had a chance to spend some time with him.

"I've never seen so much of him and he seems enthusiastic for this movie more than any other I can recall."

'Stronger' is produced by Jake's company.

Anonymous said...

Anon at 4:36 Everybody here knows his company produced it. Everybody here closely watches his career. They are just comparing it to previous years where he didn't campaign as much.

UltraViolet said...

LOL, Anon 5:25. That's a little testy, but I have to admit, I had the same reaction!

That Batman news is everywhere. I am ambivalent about Jake's doing a superhero role. The appearances and promotion would be fun, but the pressure is so intense and the fanboys are just merciless. Mostly, though, it would require a huge time commitment, and I don't like the idea of Jake's not being able to do other, better movies and plays.

But it's nice to hear that Jake is someone's first choice!

Jake as Batman?

TheInSneider
EXCLUSIVE: MICHELLE WILLIAMS is in talks to play the female lead alongside Benedict Cumberbatch & Jake Gyllenhaal in the next movie from CALL ME BY YOUR NAME director Luca Guadagnino.

Here's the article:

our-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams is in talks to play the female lead alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch in Luca Guadagnino’s Let It Fall Back, a project formerly known as Rio, the Tracking Board has learned.

Studiocanal is financing and producing the Steven Knight-scripted film, which follows a financial reporter (Gyllenhaal) who travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit a wealthy friend (Cumberbatch), only to get sucked into a plot to fake his friend’s death.

Details of Williams’ role are being kept under wraps, and while the actress’ deal hasn’t closed yet, Let It Fall Back is expected to serve as a reunion between her and Gyllenhaal, who co-starred in Brokeback Mountain together. She has yet to work with Cumberbatch, however.

Gyllenhaal and Cumberbatch will each produce via their respective banners, Nine Stories Productions and Sunny March, while Adam Ackland and Riva Marker will also produce.

Studiocanal began presenting the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and production is slated to start next year, once Williams wraps Sony’s Venom, which pairs the actress with Tom Hardy.

I am still wondering about the marketing they have for Stronger. When I read about the theatrical release in the US, that it was only few theaters and that some took the movie out after, like, two weeks I was immediately thinking that the focus might not be on theaters but more on blu-ray/DVD. I remember someone mentioning that this kind of movie feels like watching it at home on your tv rather than in the theater.

Could it be that the theatrical release is only a kind of introduction and to enable the movie to compete at the Oscars? As far as I have understood you need a theatrical release to be eligible?

When it comes to Jake campaigning I don´t really care about why HE does it. To be honest I immediately thought that it had to do with Stronger and maybe campaigning for awards-season when he announced that he´d take fall off (in terms of filming). "I love that Jake is everywhere, for whatever reason, for me the more Jake the better, lol"

Erm..... yes. Pretty much yes.

On this whole Batman-thing....

Jake at Howard Stern

Personally, I hope he won´t do it. It´s just.... naaah. I can´t see him in that role. Or in any superhero-role. I am pretty much with Jake when he said that he sort of played a superhero with Jeff. I love to watch all of those superhero movies, they´re good fun but it´s a kind of genre I just can´t see Jake in.

On a different note, could you imagine him doing a tv-series? Maybe a mini-series like Maggie did? That would be interesting... just think of all the research and preparation he´d have to do to have enough material to portray the character! I might be making fun of that right now, but only a little bit. I think it could be something Jake would like to try, seriously. Depending on the team and the story...

I saw where Hugh Jackman and Armie Hammer were also being mentioned as possible Batmans. But Jake is getting the most buzz.

Elaine said...

Isn't Jake supposed to work with Dan Gilroy and Denis Villenueve again soon besides this Rio movie?

BlueJean said...

"On a different note, could you imagine him doing a tv-series? Maybe a mini-series like Maggie did?"

I'm still hoping there will be a Detective Loki miniseries one day - ever since I saw 'Prisoners'. I'm serious. There was so much (hidden) backstory for that character, more than the casual viewer would have guessed. I mean, they could zoom in on Loki's troubled past, for instance. Jake is still young enough to play a younger David Loki.

That would be far more interesting than seeing him as Batman :( I agree with Diana: I just don't see Jake in something like that.

Chica said...

Yes, Jake is very passionate about this role and I love seeing him out and about promoting it. It's a incredible performance and story.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jake as Batman, maybe he could bring something different to the role, Ben Affleck was awful!

BlueJean said...

Yes. I can't wait for those new collaborations. Denis and Dan both brought out the best in Jake.

Matt Reeves is a good director so this can become a good movie. if it's for jake to make a blockbuster, I hope it's a good one. keeping in mind that he signed for another video game movie, which shows that he wants a hit movie. He deserves to have his franchise.

bobbyanna said...

I kind of agree, Monica. One thing I'm glad of. Jake has made his mark as an outstanding actor, often described as "the best of his generation." He proved himself on Broadway & off-Broadway in four diverse performances, and he's even gotten raves for his singing ability. He's gotten critical acclaim for his acting in movies like Nightcrawler, Prisoners, End of Watch, and Stronger just to name a few. So he has finally established his credentials.

If he were to do a franchise now, after he has proven himself it will be a lot better than if he had done it earlier in his career. And yes, Chica, he can definitely bring something different to the role.

I remember when it was announced that Christian Bale would play Batman. My first reaction was "No!Please don't do it!" I'm a Christian Bale fan ever since Empire of the Sun, when he held his own opposite John Malcovich as a 12 yr old. I was wrong. I loved his Batman. I agree Affleck phoned it in. IMO to him it was a paycheck.

But Batman is iconic. Of all the superheros out here in the comic book world. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman were always my favorites. After that, the rest sort of all blur together. So if he is going to look at doinga superhero, I'm glad it's The Batman.

Monica said...

playing Batman was one of the best decisions of bale's career.

this would be a combination of talent + box office = he would become the first choice of studios and producers like what happened with DiCaprio after Titanic.

Anonymous said...

"this would be a combination of talent + box office = he would become the first choice of studios and producers like what happened with DiCaprio after Titanic."

unless the movie flops and it hurts his career again like PoP. Batman doesn't = a good film or box office, just ask George Clooney or Ben Affleck.

bobbyanna said...

Maybe you're right, Anon 2:08. But the insurance for Jake this time is that he has a whole of of credibility as an actor. I dare say more than Ben Affleck or Clooney. I'm sure he'll insist on creative input. That seems to be characteristic of his recent roles. I think the directors' willingness to collaborate with Jake has made a big difference. And Jake's vision of the character and the director's vision have to be in sync. He's a lot more sure of himself than he was in PoP days.

Monica said...

Batman doesn't = a good film or box office, just ask George Clooney or Ben Affleck.

Michael Keaton and Bale disagree. When Batman is a good movie, he does big box office.
The problem here is that Batman was in the wrong hands: Zack Snyder. Matt Reeves is a better director.

And Jake's vision of the character and the director's vision have to be in sync. He's a lot more sure of himself than he was in PoP days.

This!

I'm still skeptical. Everyone had confidence in David Ayer for SS and that was awful. I think the problems DC has right now is more than just the actor and director. I don't want Jake to board the sinking ship. He's too good for what they've been putting out.

Anonymous said...

On please, Amy Adams is in a DC francise, Superman, and it didn't harm her career at all. It helped her career tremendously because now she has BO success on top of critical success.

Suicide Squad was a loser project from the get go and still made money and proved beneficial to Smith, Leto and especially Margot Robbie, who is getting her own franchise from that "awful" movie. Leto, with all the backlash for a terrible performance, is getting standalone Joker movies.

Batman is one of the 2 most famous superheroes of all times, the top tier superhero. And Matt Reeves is ten times better than David Ayer. He's directed the reboot franchise of Planet of the Apes, the best and most raved genre movies of recent years. Superhero movies make money and bring starpower to the lead actors. An actor like Jake will certainly use the starpower to make quality indie movies that will find a wider audience, for once. Prestige directors will cast him in their high concept films.

Anonymous said...

Amy Adams is in a supporting role and the talk around the standalone Joker movies is they'd bring in a new actor for them, not Leto. He even said he was confused about those movies because they didn't involve him

If Jake is Batman and the movies are the same level as the keaton and bale movies then great. I'm just saying I have my doubts right now with the recent dc films

Anonymous said...

Even if Jke does get this, he will probably not start working on it right away and it won't come out for a while, so I'm guessing we're two years away from Jake as Batman. If then

Anonymous said...

Absolutely. IF he does "Batman" it will be in 2019. Until then he's doing at least two of his planned projects in 2018, the Gilroy movie and the Guadagnino one. Plus the releases of Wildlife and The Sisters Brothers.

Anonymous said...

I thought he alo had a project in development with Denis Villeneuve?

Diana said...

It is said that Jake and Denis will reunite for "The Son" adapted from Jo Nesbo's crime novel. I´ve read that for the first time in mid 2016, and it´s been repeated again and again since then, but I haven´t heard anything new on that. It´s not on IMDb, either.

I loved Christain Bale in the Batman trilogy. I hope in case Jake should really do this that it´s not just a "clever career move", right now it feels a bit like that to me. I have no doubt that Jake would give his all (like always).

Anonymous said...

It´s not on IMDb, either.

"The Son" is listed on both Jake's and Villeneuve's IMDB pages under Projects In Development.

Jake's projects in development

Villeneuve's projects in development

It depends on their other movies. Jake is super busy and so was Denis preparing Dune. But a huge project like Dune may be struggling now, considering Alcon lost 80 million (acc. to Hollywood Reporter) because of Blade Runner tanking. I don't see investors throwing big money at Denis right now. He may reconsider his priorities and make The Son before Dune. After a huge financial failure, making a small indie seems the better option. Small budget, small risk, bigger chances for both a good and successful movie. It's what Ang Lee did after his Hulk tanking, he made a small movie called BBM. The rest is history. Denis should take a leaf out of Ang's book.

I went to the 92nd Street Y event tonight. Jake looked fantastic and was very funny and entertaining. He voice seemed to crack at times, and at the end, the moderator (Annette Insdorf) revealed that Jake has a cold, which explained the vocal issues. But he was very enthusiastic and thoughtful. When Insdorf said that because of the cold, she had promised Jake to keep it to one hour, he said he didn't mind answering more questions.

Insdorf, who is a film historian and has worked with Naomi Foner, seemed like a real Jake fangirl. But not enough of a fan or historian to know how to pronounce his name (she kept saying "hal" instead of "haal") or to ask good questions. She was kind of infuriating and ruined the night for a couple of my friends. There was a lot about her own thoughts, feelings and experiences and not enough about Jake's. She often failed to follow up. Two glaring examples:

She described being at the Leonard Bernstein tribute where Jake sang "Maria." She mentioned that she had heard rumors that Martin Scorsese doing a Bernstein biopic and that she thought Jake would be perfect. She hasn't heard anything since then and asked Jake if he knew anything about it. Jake somewhat hesitantly said, "Yes, we are working on that." And then she didn't ask him if "we" meant with Scorsese or Jake's own company. Or any other details. I wanted to scream!

There's news scoop in there somewhere.

She also asked Jake about BBM and whether they knew what it would become when they were making it. Jake responded simply, "No." Then she waxed at length about what it meant but didn't direct anything else to him and just moved on. Grr!

I appreciated how much she seemed to love Jake, but she was terrible. He did not seem to mind and gave her a big hug at the end.

I hope it was taped, because there were a lot of nice, funny moments. Also many repeat stories for those of us who've watched many of the Q&As. But some new bits, too. I'll try to provide more details tomorrow.

The film was well received, with lots of laughs, gasps and sniffles and applause at the end. It was great to see it again on the big screen and with a crowd.

Wow, UV! It's great that you got a chance to be there!

Couple of things I've been thinking about. First, the chatter all over social media about this Batman thing, is still pretty intense. It's not fading. It's just my opinion, but I don't see Jake's people trying to kill the rumors, and I don't see the Director or the Producers or the DC universe people trying to kill it. That says a lot. And if the main angle these rumors seem to be promoting is that "the director wants Gyllenhaal," then if it's eventually given to someone else, or even if Ben Affleck comes out in favor of staying as Batman, then things could get very awkward. I don't think Jake's management would put him in that position. Especially right now if it appears he is campaigning for Stronger. So my guess is that this is probably going to happen. In fact I'll be surprised if it doesn't at this point.

bobbyanna said...

Oh, I haven´t seen your posting, UV! Great that you could be there. Again I feel like I´m living in the wrong part of the world *lol*. Did you see anyone filming the event? And I don´t mean someone with a cellphone...

I agree with you on the whole Batman thing, bobbyanna. No comment, no denial, nothing. The longer it takes, the more convinced I am that it´s going to happen, or at least that there are serious negotiations. I posted before that I can´t see Jake playing Batman. But then again - I love a good challenge and that´s once again a role different to many he´s taken on. We´ll see...

Anonymous said...

i don't think no denial=confirmation that it's happening.

looking back it took a week for jake to deny his involvement with suicide squad. this news of batman just came out thursday.

and let's not forget it's oscar season. jake's name being in the news and associated with a franchise (even a bad one) is good pr for an awards campaign.

Anonymous said...

clarifying my above comment, the current dc batman franchise is what's bad, look at JL box office, not all batman movies are bad.

Monica said...

jake's name being in the news and associated with a franchise (even a bad one) is good pr for an awards campaign.

yep, but it's not good for warner to have this kind of news in the week of Justice League release.
For now, Ben is Batman, yet there is nothing official about him not returning to the role.

Anonymous said...

And yet Warner Bros allows the rumour about Jake as Batman to run and intensify. What more proof that they want to cast him? Make no mistake, if the studio wants a casting rumour squashed, it's being done in a matter of hours, not days.

When it comes to tentpoles franchises, studios control these rumours by leaking informations to generate interest and debates. Usually it's a list of several names. One can spot the real deal, the actor they're contemplating, when the "scoop" contains one name only. Such is the case with Jake.

Collider made a feeble atempt to debunk the scoop because they have a beef with the guy who released it. So they did some digging, confirmed the meeting between Jake and Matt Reeves, but claim the director also met with other actors. Ok, what other actors, give us the scoop if you have it. Silence. Crickets. I'm guessing there are no other names at the moment. There's only Jake and the studio itself wants his name circulating.

Anonymous said...

Well if someone leaked this, it's definitely embarrassing for Ben Affleck, and that won't benefit Jake. Plus if Jake doesn't get it, it'll be embarrassing. It's an uncomfortable position to be in.

Anonymous said...

There's nothing embarrassing for Jake. Being rumoured to play Batman is far from being uncomfortable - it's a sign of being in demand. Only a few actors are "wanted" for this iconic character. He either signs to do the project, or he doesn't. It happened before, to him and to other actors. It's the nature of movie business. The rumour having this kind of staying power only reinforces Jake's status.

There's nothing embarrassing for Affleck either, if he does indeed wants out of the franchise.

As for "it won't benefit Jake to embarrass Affleck" - not going to happen because Patrick Whitesell is both Jake's and Ben's agent. He's negotiating this deal for both of them ;-)

He's Bale's agent, too. And Hugh's. Wolverine, former Batman, current Batman, and possible future Batman.

Interrupting our "heated" program to post the link for 92nd Street Y "In Conversation" with Jake from last night. The event UV told us about. It's 57 minutes long. Enjoy!

It´s quite interesting to see all the discussions about Jake going for or not going for Batman. You can search for Jake or Batman on social media or google, right now it´s stuffed with all sorts of opinions, rumours and suggestions what Jake or the studio should or should not do and why etcetc.

"Jake's name being in the news and associated with a franchise ... is good pr for an awards campaign."

I fully agree with that. Batman is and always will be a huge thing, and no matter whether I want to see Jake go for it or not, I don´t think this whole project will affect him in a negative way. He´s got way too many good movies under his belt right now, and I´m sure his decision to take on the role or not will be met with respect.

I am really looking forward to watching the two new interviews. I´m happy they got taped and released! Poor Jake having a cold, I hope he´s going to fully recover until thanksgiving!

Some critics think the Batman franchise is stale and DC is weaker because Justice League didn't do well. I think some of that concern is valid. If Jake does do it, I hope they will wait a decent interval to present him as the new Batman.

I think right now as far as the whole superhero genre goes, Wonder Woman is really popular, and Aquaman, and The Flash seem to be attracting a lot of interest and will possibly have a lot more chance for success. Black Panther is another one that will be very, very successful according to the tracking polls that try to measure interest before a movie is released.

Is that the clip of the marathoner? Jake was very moved by that story.

Director Dan Gilroy will reteam with his "Nightcrawler" star Jake Gyllenhaal in an upcoming Netflix movie coming out next Halloween.

It will be set in the contemporary art world of Los Angeles.

Gilroy says the movie will also have a large ensemble cast, similar to Robert Altman's "The Player."

Set to begin filming March 2 in LA.

>>Oh please, tell us more about it, UV! It's one thing to watch the recording (for which we're thankful) and quite another being there in the auditorium. Could you tell us about the career reel that Jake is referencing at 4:50 min. mark? <<

Before introducing Jake, the moderator talked briefly about his career, highlighting City Slickers, Donnie Darko, Lovely and Amazing, The Good Girl, Proof, Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac, End of Watch, Prisoners, Nocturnal Animals and Stronger.

Then they showed two clips from City Slickers - lots of audience gasping and oohing at young Jake, a DD clip (the antiChrist scene), the clip from Lovely and Amazing when Jordan's mother comes out to the car, the rifle confrontation scene between Swofford and Fergus. Then the locker room scene from End of Watch (I'm in my chonies), the "I'm glad you shot him!: scene from Nocturnal Animals and then the last clip - I wish I knew hot to quit you.

UV, thanks for answering in such detail the question about the reel. They referenced it often, and I so wish we could've seen it! Interesting and refreshing that she chose a clip from Lovely and Amazing but quite baffling the reason for not including a clip from Prisoners ("couldn't find a scene that's not disturbing" - how about the very last scene?).
The lady was lovely and surely a film expert, but maladroit as a moderator. Jake though was beautiful inside and outside. When he was listening to that guy's story and started crying... When the girl said he played a big part in her life and he turned red...
The Leonard Bernstein bit is missing from this recording, UV. But the moment when he started talking about doing musicals (and she didn't asked for specifics) is there.

The SAG conversation Real Sal posted above is maybe the best in this string of interviews. It's from the same day as the 92nd Street Y conversation, prior to it. Because he was addressing actors or because the questions were focused and sharp, Jake was on fire in spite of fighting the cold. The start is slow but the answers grow thoughtful, detailed, personal, sprinkled with spontaneous jokes.

I hope he gets some rest on Thanksgiving. A happy celebration, GBers!

Jake Gyllenhaal is cooking Thanksgiving dinner for his family

https://pagesix.com/2017/11/22/jake-gyllenhaal-is-cooking-thanksgiving-dinner-this-year/

“Hugh Jackman and “Spotlight” director Tom McCarthy hosted a special screening of Jake Gyllenhaal’s film “Stronger” in Soho on Tuesday night — and we hear Jake headed straight from the event to prepare to personally cook dinner for his family.

Spies said that Maggie Gyllenhaal and hubby Peter Sarsgaard were at the screening along with “O.J.: Made in America” filmmaker Ezra Edelman, “The Sopranos” creator David Chase and Joel Grey.

Jake plays inspiring Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman in the film, and Bauman was at the screening as well.

The actor and the film’s subject have become very close and are in touch daily. After the attack, Bauman, who lost his legs and helped authorities ID one of the terrorists behind the attack, is now speaking all over the world and studying engineering to learn to design prosthetics for other amputees, we hear.

Jake’s getting Oscar buzz for his portrayal. After the emotional film, he headed straight from the screening to upstate New York, where he’ll make Thanksgiving dinner for sister Maggie and Sarsgaard as well as his screenwriter mom, Naomi Foner, and other friends and family.

“Jake’s an amazing cook,” says a Hollywood pal.

Meanwhile, sources said that Jackman was headed to the Hamptons with wife Deborra-Lee Furness to celebrate the holiday.

Anonymous said...

He's not exactly resting, isn't he? Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for mom, sis, nieces, brother-in-law and Greta :-) Maybe after Thanksgiving he'll finally get some sleep.

It's so nice that the screening was hosted by Hugh Jackman (and the director of Spotlight). I can't remember the last time one of his celebrity friends did something like this...was it Gwyneth for End of Watch?

Joel Grey was in attendance - what a wonderful actor who shares with Jake and Hugh the passion for musical theatre.

UltraViolet said...

Yup, that does not sound like a restful Thanksgiving! Thanks for the link, EFK.

It is very nice for Hugh to host a screening. And Tom McCarthy - wonder if he and Jake are cooking something up.

>>quite baffling the reason for not including a clip from Prisoners ("couldn't find a scene that's not disturbing" - how about the very last scene?). <<

There are quite a few scenes that could have been used. Just an example of the moderator's weirdness.

>>The lady was lovely and surely a film expert, but maladroit as a moderator. <<

That is a much kinder assessment than I gave :)

>>Jake though was beautiful inside and outside. When he was listening to that guy's story and started crying... When the girl said he played a big part in her life and he turned red...<<

I have to go back and watch that, because it was hard to hear her. She said she thought she was going to marry Jake when she was 10, then went on and on. And to save time and embarrassment, the moderator didn't repeat everything she said.

>>The Leonard Bernstein bit is missing from this recording, UV. But the moment when he started talking about doing musicals (and she didn't asked for specifics) is there.<<

This makes me think something is really happening, and Jake asked them to cut that part out. Very strange. (The moderator brought it up again later and Jake kiddingly admonished her not to keep mentioning it because someone else would steal the idea.)

Thanks for letting me know, anon!

And thanks for the SAG/AFTRA link Real Sal. I'm glad to hear it's a good convo. I got through a few minutes earlier.

Forgot to say that Jake really does seem open and engaged in these Q&As. Not sure if everyone has watched the Y video, but I love the part where he talks about the Moulin Rouge audition. I think the interviews/conversations are getting more interesting now, that is in case the interviewer is doing a good job, of course. Naturally, Jake is answering the same questions again and again, but I feel like he´s going deeper in his answers and there are always some bits coming out that I haven´t heard before from him.

I also have to agree with you, UV, he seems to be pretty relaxed and comfortable. Thinking about older interviews I feel like there was always some kind of restlessness about him, as if he was on a constant search or chasing something. To me, he seems to have found some of that now, this inner peace, knowing who you are and what you stand for and what and who is important to you, knowing your priorities. It takes time to feel comfortable with yourself, knowing yourself, being honest to yourself and accepting your strengths and weaknesses. Once you´re there you step out with a different kind of confidence, and that is perceptible.

Sorry, I´m babbling....

I think you're right, EFK. Definitely right about that obnoxious article. Lots of twitter sentiment on Jake's side, as well:

Bullshit. Would you rather he did a "Prince of Persia" sequel? Do you think anyone makes "Nightcrawler" thinking "OSCARS!" Come on.

Thanks for the link, Hagen. I like what we've heard so far about the movie.

Diana, I'm hoping Jake does some UK promotion. It's always fun, plus it would keep his name circulating as awards are chosen.

Sadly, it feels like today is the beginning of the 2017-2018 snubs for Jake: The Sunday cast album was not nominated for a Grammy.

I agree with you on this. I'm trying to remain optimistic about Oscars but I just have a feeling he'll miss it again. Hope I'm proven wrong. Nice to see people coming to his defense though over that bs article.

Variety: Margot Robbie Says She Signed on for Harley Quinn Role Because of ‘End of Watch’
Robbie also pointed out that they shared a connection in that both actors have worked with director David Ayer and told Gyllenhaal that “End of Watch,” which Ayer directed and Gyllenhaal starred in, is one of her favorite films.

“The reason I signed on for ‘Suicide Squad’ was because I love ‘End of Watch’ so much and I saw it about four times at the cinema,” she said.

I'm quite confident that SAG and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will acknowledge Jake's performance in "Stronger. It's hard to tell how the Oscar nominations will look like.

My guess is he'll hit everything but the Oscars (like he did for Nightcrawler) BAFTA nominated him for NA last year, I can't imagine he'd miss there for Stronger.

bobbyanna said...

Wow. Let's think positive thoughts. Jake has received nothing but praise for his work on Sunday in the Park and now, Stronger. Personally I think WME is more enthusiastic about his chances this year as far as awards season goes. He has a solid chance.

UltraViolet said...

We know he has a chance, Bobbyanna :) But he has had a stronger, pardon the pun, chance in the past. It's hard to be optimistic.

I had a tiny hope for Jake at the National Board of Review, because they are one of the few to award him for Brokeback Mountain. But they gave it to under awarded Tom Hanks. I like Tom, but he looks hammy in the clips I've seen.

Snippet of Jake at the Mudbound event.

Full video of Jake and Margot Robbie. I have to say they look great together in their photos.

Thank you for all the links. I´ve come from comfortably calm and smoothly running into total chaos right now, and it won´t get better until Xmas, I am NOT amused!

Right now I have to agree with you, UV, it IS hard to be optimistic when it comes to awards this season. It´s a shame that Stronger didn´t do better at the box office which is a main factor to me not being optimistic with awards.

I´d be so happy for nominations. There are a lot of brilliant actors out there who have been nominated more than once and still not won an Oscar, for example.

Back to chaos....

So the Jake news cycle isn't going to slow down anytime soon!

Brief clip of Jake at UNICEF's Snowflake Ball last night. He presented an award to Lucy Meyer, a UNICEF and Special Olympics spokesperson. From InStyle:

One individual who’s determined to do just that is Jake Gyllenhaal. The actor took the stage to express his gratitude to UNICEF for its “incredible” work, and delivered a heartfelt speech about what it really means to be a hero. “Events like this are important,” said Gyllenhaal. “Not just to raise money, but to remind ourselves that even with the relentless hell-scape that is the news these days, we still share the world with extraordinary humans. My friend Jeff Bauman is one of those people. Some of you may already be aware of his story and how he lost his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing, and I’ve had the honor of getting to know him over the past two years. I got to play him in a film [Stronger]. And while I wasn’t surprised by how inspiring his proximity would be, I was completely dumbstruck by what I learned in watching a hero up close."

Continued Gyllenhaal, "I think that we all have a fantasy that heroes just somehow appear on earth fully formed and without flaws. Miraculously equipped with the tools and the vision that are necessary to change the world. But knowing someone like Jeff and understanding his journey taught me that, in fact, it’s the opposite. Becoming a hero is an exercise in facing all of your fears and personal vulnerability head-on. It’s about choosing to overcome devastating loss and tragedy day by day. Heroism and triumph lies in the fact that against these odds, hope prevails. It’s that unlikely insistent hope in a world of violence and despair that sets heroes apart and inspires us all.”

After praising the work of UNICEF founder Helenka Pantaleoni, Gyllenhaal went on to present Special Olympics spokesperson Lucy Meyer with the Helenka Pantaleoni Humanitarian Award (the second of the night’s honors, after basketball star Dikembe Mutombo presented L’Oréal Luxe USA Group President Carol J. Hamilton with the Spirit of Compassion Award earlier in the evening). “I can think of no one more deserving of this award than the inimitable Lucy Meyer,” said Gyllenhaal.

“At just 18 years old, Lucy has won five gold medals for swimming at the Special Olympics," he continued. "She has served as the UNICEF Global Messenger at the Special Olympics World Games, and is the official spokesperson of the Special Olympics UNICEF USA partnership. She raised critical awareness and funding for programs worldwide and has traveled to Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, and Jamaica, spreading her gospel of strength, kindness, and humanity everywhere she goes. She has addressed dignitaries at the U.N., and just this year spoke at a state briefing. And Lucy once rallied senators and politicians to support the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. And when she’s not showing well-seasoned humanitarians how it’s done, you can find her scoring goals, swimming laps, and surfing the coast. Now, remember, she’s just 18. What are you doing?”

After rattling off Meyer’s impressive list of accomplishments—and undoubtedly causing the audience to question their own productivity, charitable and otherwise—Gyllenhaal and UNICEF USA CEO & President Caryl M. Stern presented her with the award. “Thank you very much,” said Meyer. “It’s an honor to receive this award and so exciting to have it presented by Jake. He is so cool.” We couldn’t agree more.

Real Sal, thanks for trying to link! You just had the http" repeated :) I remember that dancer/IGer mentioned posted about Jake inviting him to a Stronger screening in September. No idea what the connection is.

With Stronger available for digital download and opening in the UK, we're getting interviews (thanks, Diana!) and some more tweets:

Gyllenhaal’s shattering performance flies from relaxed humour to unbearable fury, creating a permanent ambiguity with his character – is he a hero or not?

Jake Gyllenhaal gives the performance of the year in David Gordon Green's profoundly moving Stronger.

This made me LOL:

‘SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE’ Sarna Lapine’s revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s 1980s classic about the painter George Seurat and his 20th-century descendant, starring a magnificent Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, registered as the ultimate affirmation of the power of art to distill, shape and transcend life’s daily anarchy. George’s invocation of “design, composition, balance, light and harmony” felt like the perfect summing up of why art matters more than ever in times of tumult.

LOL thanks UV (I really should reread what I post!).

I've been avoiding all the predictions hoopla but was bored this evening and got sucked in and I'm annoyed with myself. I have a feeling that James Franco will get Jake's nom, just like Bradley Cooper did a couple years ago.

I hope he does some more press here in the UK. None of my friends or colleagues have heard of Stronger :( I'm going to try get a friend to go with me next week to watch it again.

I liked the randomness of that bubble wrap video.

Screendaily: [Jake] is referring to Villeneuve, now an A-list director after Arrival, Sicario and Blade Runner 2049. Gyllenhaal worked with him on Prisoners and Enemy (both 2013) and the duo will reunite with The Son, a Nine Stories project based on the book by Jo Nesbo. Gyllenhaal says they are in the middle of the script and are “moving quickly”. “I understand what high demand Denis is in, but I also understand my relationship with him,” he says. “We worked together before all of Hollywood was obsessed with him, so I think he is loyal in that way.”

Other titles Gyllenhaal is starring in and producing are Paul Dano’s directing debut Wildlife; Stephen Gaghan’s videogame adaptation The Division; The Anarchists Vs ISIS directed by Daniel Espinosa; and Rio, from Call Me By Your Name’s Guadagnino and co-starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Love all Jake-news happening lol. He continues to be super busy.

Love the W Magazine video! Nothing more fun than popping bubble wrap. LOL

Have to admit I am anxious about awards season.

So far the main players on a lot of Oscar watch lists seem to be Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Timothee Chalamet, James Franco and Jake.

Another tweet praising Stronger is from Jordan Horowitz, the producer of La La Land who stopped the show to say Moonlight had actually won best picture.

"Jordan Horowitz‏Verified account @jehorowitz

Not sure why people are sleeping on STRONGER. It’s great."

EFK said...

I should add that the "show" I mentioned in my last post was the Oscars lol.

Forgot to mention that with some movies still not out yet like the Tom Hanks and Hugh Jackman ones I am worried about Jake making it into the final five. So far fingers crossed...

UltraViolet said...

Nice tweet, EFK. I love it. I hope Jake makes the show :)

I am also trying not to get sucked in and not succeeding. I especially need to avoid Awards Watch, but I love getting all the other news. But it is toxic for Jake fans.

"I've been avoiding all the predictions hoopla but was bored this evening and got sucked in and I'm annoyed with myself. I have a feeling that James Franco will get Jake's nom, just like Bradley Cooper did a couple years ago. "

I'm thinking this too. Franco is already getting attention from critics groups that Jake hasn't gotten yet.

Anonymous said...

I have noticed a lot of times there will be hype for a movie and the lead actor right up until a movie opens, then it sort of fizzles. I have seen trailers for Gary Oldman's Winston Churchill and I am not impressed. I have no idea if James Franco and Hugh Jackman's movies will be any good. IMO the only two that are a lock are Tom Hanks and Daniel Day Lewis, and he gets nominated just for breathing. They ought to be doing an awards campaign for Stronger in the Best Picture category. I thought it was pretty flawless.

Monica said...

Campaigns are expensive, with the film not being box office success, everything focuses on a campaign for him to get an nomination. What appeared to be a weak year for actors is starting to become strong.
The film tells a lot, in recent years most of the actors have been nominated in films that were also in best film. This seems to be a strong year for that.
I think at the moment the locks are Gary Oldman and Timothee Chalamet.

bobbyanna said...

Maybe Anon 11:25 and monica are both right, in which case the fifth spot is Jake's.At least that's how I'm going to look at it. :)

It's really hard not to get caught up in the speculation.

Hagen said...

Jake has been nominated for a Critics' Choice Award. He's one out of seven nominees for "Best Actor".

Anonymous said...

the real test will be the sag nominations. they don't split drama and comedy like the golden globes and they only allow for 5 nominees. I think those are announced next week.

bobbyanna said...

Can someone with a better memory help me out? As I recall, in recent years there was one occasion when someone was considered "a lock" for the Oscar after he was nominated, and was literally waiting for his name to be called...and it wasn't. I want to say it was Michael Keaton, but I'm not sure.

Yaay, Jake. Although I'm a little disappointed not to see Tatiana' name too.

Anonymous said...

I think you're right bobbyanna. Everyone expected Keaton to win. There's even a clip with him putting his speech back in his pocket after the winner was announced.

I was disappointed Tatiana didn't get in either though she did get in for her tv show.

EFK said...

So thrilled Jake's nominated for CCA's!!! Very good category.

I do agree with Anon 11:13 that the SAGs is key. Nervous about it...have everything crossed.

Jake needs to keep himself out there imo.

Monica, I am with you. So many pundits were saying that it was a weak category but I had a feeling with so many movies still to come out it would become very strong. Just praying Jake is in there. I also agree Gary and Timothee are a lock as well as Daniel Day Lewis.

Anonymous said...

SAG Award nominations are announced next Wednesday morning the 13th.

Monica said...

when someone was considered "a lock" for the Oscar after he was nominated, and was literally waiting for his name to be called...and it wasn't.

There are many, but always when the actor does something wrong or has a dark past. Russel Crowe assaulted a producer of Bafta which made him lose the Oscar for Denzel.

There are those who have been snubbed that everyone thought they would be nominated.

Jake by Nightcrawler. He was nominated for some critics awards, GG, SAG, and Bafta, but was snubbed at the Oscars. Bradley Cooper, who was not nominated for anything, was nominated.
Amy Adams is the latest to be nominated, but was snubbed at the Oscars.

Monica said...

Michael Keaton thought he was going to win, but the favorite was always Eddie with his Oscar bait role.

Viola Davis who was the favorite after winning the SAG, but Harvey managed to give the third Oscar to Meryl.

Unfortunately critics go with what they think the Oscar will reward than who they think it deserves. They said several times that jake was the best, but they kept rewarding Eddie.

Real Sal said...

Congrats to Jake!

UltraViolet said...

It's nice to see Jake's name on a nominees list again. It's also fun to see all the UK Twitter praise for Jake. So many "deserves an Oscar" tweets. But it stings a bit, too, because I fear the inevitable.

Will never get over the Nightcrawler snub, made worse because Bradley Cooper got it for that overrated jingoistic crapfest.

So cool that Jake is in this years NY Times best actors. They do it every year. This years scary movie themed videos are trippy lol.

There was also a write up his performance scroll down here.

"Jake Gyllenhaal

Film: Stronger

What to do with an actor in a type of role you dislike that’s the centerpiece of a movie you don’t care for, in part because it’s set somewhere you wish the movies would, pretty please, stop fetishizing? Well, if the acting works, you just ignore everything else. And Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting here really works. He plays Jeff Bauman, a real-life Costco employee who lost his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing. Bauman is desperate to go back to being a knucklehead with his buddies. But he has to struggle with his family’s brew of emotions, his girlfriend’s guilty feelings and rehab. It’s the sort of bound-for-tragedy part that barely needs an actor. It practically performs itself. And yet, many actors have given it and had many a statuette thrown at them for doing so. But as the story becomes about the city’s need to worship at Bauman’s wheelchair, Gyllenhaal’s sidesteps dignity and saintliness and inhabits the horror of unsought heroism. He makes the physical challenges secondary to the psychological ones.

Gyllenhaal has found a way to play a part that can only be described as charismatically unremarkable; except he doesn’t just play it, he disappears within it. The bombing in the film happens sooner than you want it to. The minute you hear the first boom, you start wondering about what’s going to happen to Bauman, obviously. I worried about what would happen to Gyllenhaal’s acting. He works here with remarkable restraint. The character struggles with leglessness and unceasing adoration. The actor doesn’t appear to struggle with anything. He’s playing the shock of attention, the suffocating embarrassment of pity, and rage at how the bombing forces Bauman to take greater responsibility for his choices.

This fictional Bauman seems fine with the wheelchair. It’s adulthood and celebrity that leave him feeling confined. There’s a scene in which the character is wheeled onto the ice before a Bruins game, where the crowd smothers him with hero worship. Rather than exude gratitude, Gyllenhaal goes for something far more original and distressing in its direness: claustrophobia. W.M."
