Everest premieres this week across the globe, starting on IMAX screens in the U.S. before opening wider next weekend. Vanity Fair published a series of behind-the-scenes photos. They were taken by Greg Williams, who shot those beautiful black-and-white photos in Venice earlier this month.

Southpaw is just past its first weekend in theaters, but there's already news about Jake's upcoming movies. Word today is that Demolition will open the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Brokeback Mountain. As the Venice Film Festival and TIFF announce their lineups, we can't help but think back to the heady festival days of 2005. There will no doubt be many remembrances of BBM. Out has one of the first looks back with an oral history of the film.
Jake has been asked about the anniversary, with regard to the recent Supreme Court decision on marriage equality:

Hathaway: When I got the part and had my first rehearsal, one of the things Ang told me was: “On the night Lureen and Jack first meet, that’s her Brokeback Mountain, the only one she ever got.” So that kind of fed into the bitterness.
That stings.
Gyllenhaal: I’d known Heath for a really long time before that movie. We were friends. We went to a sort of boot camp, where we’d all hang out and learn to ride. Heath already knew how to ride really well, but we’d ride and hang out on the ranch outside of Los Angeles. It was really, really amazing.
Gyllenhaal: For the first month of shooting we all lived by this river in little trailers, and I had my dog there. We all just lived on a campground and would walk to set. You know, in a world driven by commerce, particularly in the movie business, there’s no time spent together—relationships are fleeting. But in the old-school way, people really used to spend their time together. They became a family. And that’s what Ang created on the movie. It’s why we are all still close— not just bonded by the success of the film, but bonded by the experience. It was an intimate project in that way. We’d wake up and make breakfast for each other, and hang out. Heath and Michelle fell in love. It was a really special, special time.
Gyllenhaal: That line [“I don’t know how to quit you”] has moved, it has been mocked, it has been everything in between, but I remember coming out of that scene, off that ridge of the hill, and seeing a number of the crew, some of whom didn’t even know what the movie was about, crying. When I first read that line, I was like, What is that? Now I realize that anybody who has loved knows what that feels like. The interesting part of casting us at such a young age was that we didn’t completely understand what we were involved in, and that’s the beauty of the movie as well.
Gyllenhaal: While there are many parts of the real story that are sad, one of the saddest things is that I won’t be able to exchange ideas creatively with Heath again, because that was one of the most beautiful things to come out of that.
So poignant. And heart-breaking. But it's good to remember the happy times.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel Macadams attended the Canadian premiere of Southpaw last night in Toronto, and Jake is making the press rounds today for the film. There were a lot of enthusiastic tweets and photos. Looks like it was a success all around. Here's a taste of Southpaw in Toronto.
"It was an absolute joy to work with Jake," said Pari Dukovic, who photographed Jake Gyllenhaal. "I hoped to show Jake's range as an actor and the intensity with which he dedicates himself to his work."
WWD: What was it like to work with Jake?
R.R.: "That was intense because Jake had laser-like focus. It’s different working with different people depending on the film but he was so laser-like that I just stayed out of his way, stayed quiet, and then when the cameras rolled we did our thing, but before that I had to let him be in his own Lou world because it was super intense for him. He was really serious about it because it was not easy. There was a lot of dialogue".
WWD: I’ve been hearing Oscar buzz, especially for his role.
R.R.: "I hope so. I hope there’s an Oscar buzz. He’s amazing in this movie!"
Case in point: Jake Gyllenhaal, who started his film-watching life with a box-office and critical failure. “One of the movies I remember seeing in the theatre very clearly was Dune. I had chicken pox. My mom took me during the day when nobody was in the theatre.”
So, that’s what Oscar buzz sounds like. It’s literally a hum as people filter out of a press screening, a communal muttering about “complete transformations” and “innocent eyes,” a hive of phones vibrating as people correct the spelling of “Gyllenhaal” in a flurry of Tweets about his inevitable nomination for Nightcrawler, screenwriter Dan Gilroy’s first film as a director. It’s not a loud noise, but it is persistent. And it’s certainly justified.
The city shines brightest at night.” That’s the tagline for Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal’s newest independent-ish buzzy flick. It’s also a fitting mantra for everything that happens near and around the Bell Lightbox epicentre. And Soho House would most certainly have top billing.
Indeed, the celebration for Nightcrawler was a waiting game, anticipation-inducing for journos and star stalkers who just want something, anything, to happen and officially usher TIFF’s first and strongest (party) weekend into boldfaced existence.
“When are they getting here?” It’s not they, babe, it’s simply he. Gyllenhaal was obviously the name on everyone’s lips but somehow, it’s not entirely polite to run around asking when the man of the hour would arrive, already 45 minutes behind schedule. Which I did anyway. Or got other people to do for me. ...
And, finally, an explosion of light from the corner bar. Jakey’s here, looking delicious and well-rounded, having gained back much of the 20 pounds he had lost for the role. His YSL suit is picture perfect, literally, and Russo makes her way past all the handlers to drape herself over him. Make me relevant again, she says with her eyes. Kidding. It’s all small-talk and brief smiles in between Gyllenhaal’ s smoldering camera face, which secretly makes all of us laugh. Awww.
