Generally, suitable words cease to exist in the midst of a tragedy. While the horrific terrorism in Brussels is no exception to this, actor Jake Gyllenhaal managed to express a heartfelt sentiment while on the press tour for his new film.

A mere hours after news of the repulsive acts broke, Gyllenhaal and his Demolition costars were set to partake in a live interview on AOL BUILD. The Academy Award nominee looked visibly upset as he took to the stage with the rest of the cast. Once the interview began, Gyllenhaal politely paused from answering the moderator’s first question regarding the film. He felt it was more important to address the fresh wounds that terrorists had cut in the world.

“In the spirit of compassion, I feel like I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge all the people in Brussels today who are victims of the horrific bombing that happened there,” he said gazing at the audience. “We’re all having fun here now and talking about a movie we deeply love, but at the same time it’s important that we express our support. So, I wanted to say that, first and foremost, before we get into everything...”

When the interviewer asked if hearing terrible news makes it feel different to go out and promote a film, Gyllenhaal responded eloquently:

“I had the honor of meeting President Obama many years ago and he said to me very clearly — it is your job as entertainers to provide entertainment and, given the tough times that we all live in, to create art that says something, but also really brings people joy. So, I consider that to be my initiative. I think we all do here. It’s very important that we stay positive and always create things that are saying something, but also entertaining.”

Looping back to the question he said, “it is weird and feels a little funny, but it’s important for things to go on.”

The other talent on stage (which included Naomi Watts, Judah Lewis and Chris Cooper) firmly nodded in agreement and applauded, along with the studio audience, as Gyllenhaal finished his statement. He appeared to not only extend support to Brussels, but to urge everyone (artist or not) to do what they can to go on with their lives in a positive manner.

Jake also managed some beautiful political shade. Hee sometimes seems reluctant to take a stand but that was pretty clearly aimed at Trump and perhaps Cruz, as well.

That's Jake, arriving at something called the Andrews International Training Center in Burbank on Thursday. Not sure if he was there for training for End of Watch (or, you know, to be a security guard). Or that could be where the Battle of the Badges was held.

Junketing Jake

It was Source Code junket weekend in Los Angeles with Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Duncan Jones doing the rounds of international, national and local press. Sounds grueling for the main players, but for some of the interviewers, not so much:

I highly recommend sustained eye contact with Jake Gyllenhaal to brighten anyone's day.



Yeah, I could see the appeal in that.

I posted a link to this interview last week, but I hadn't noticed that you can listen to the audio. It's a roundtable interview, and it's fun to hear Jake's voice. It is spoiler-full, however, so listen with caution. Jake's enthusiasm for the film is apparent; I love how he describes a crew member's reaction after one pivotal scene. I wonder if he was able to sustain it through this whole weekend of questions.

SXSW: The festival that keeps on giving

A couple of new Jake Gyllenhaal interviews done during SXSW. the first was done before Source Code's premiere. Jake talks about his affinity for science fiction and whether he had to learn all the science in the movie:



In the second, Jake has an outdoor sit-down with Ben Lyons and talks about fainting for his art:



They were at Gourdough's, apparently a famous Austin doughnut trailer. Jake ate a sinful looking concoction, but that was shown only on the news and isn't on the tape. In the E! News interview, Jake talked about how being an uncle made him think more about family and food. He touched briefly on the Edible Schoolyard program.

Source Code reviews continue to be good. It has a 75% tomatometer rating at Rotten Tomatoes. And Richard Roeper gave it an A, calling it the best movie he's seen in 2011.

And a videocamera and a reporter. Anne Thompson conducted an interview with Jake Gyllenhaal and Duncan Jones the day after the premiere of Source Code at SXSW. In part one, the pair discuss how the movie came together, different approaches and different ideas.



In Part Two, they discuss being contemporaries and collaborators.



The final part is the shortest:



It's fun to watch their interplay. There does seem to be mutual respect and affection.



In this interview, Jake reveals that he hadn't seen the final cut of the movie until the Austin premiere. He also talks about the different versions of the Source Code:

What were some of the other endings?

There was a big question about the order to the endings. I had all these weird ideas that someone could appear, or something could happen, and Duncan would always go with these ideas that I had. He would be like, "Can we get—find somebody in a suit! Get that guy off the street!" And we would do a take like that. So hopefully on the DVD you'll be able to see things like that.

But there were alternate versions of every scene. Every source code has an alternate version, initially a different choice made by me.

Yes, let's hope the DVD is jam-packed. Unlike the sort weak L&OD DVD release.

There's also a new non-video interview, where Jake reveals he'd been trying to get Source Code made for two years prior to Duncan's involvement. There's also a slightly different version of how that all came about. And he compares Duncan to Ang Lee:

In the last decade you’ve become a movie star, yet your choices all seem like smaller indie films that are received on a large scale. What’s the difference between the larger scale films and the smaller ones?

There are a lot of more wonderful aspects of working on a smaller film. Each film is a journey and a lesson. I take away a lot from each film, particularly working with the extraordinary directors I’ve worked with. Ang Lee, David Fincher, Sam Mendes…the thing you take away is what you very clearly know you need when you’re telling a story, which is somebody who knows why they’re telling a story. Surprisingly we lose track of that. To know that you have somebody who knows why they’re making something is important.

And then patience, which is, to me, one of the most amazing qualities I saw from all of the people I’ve worked with. I find a lot of similarities between Ang Lee and Duncan Jones. In personality, in interpretation of scenes, in the ability to let actors really encompass a world and feel empowered but at the same time have total control over the story that they’re telling. It’s almost like a magician. You feel like you’re creating the thing that’s happening, and in some ways you’re helping it be created, but ultimately there is a true wizard there. Personality-wise, Duncan is very quiet and sort of soft spoken, very introverted, very similar to Ang. When I met him, it was strange, my instinct connected to a similar thing when I met Ang.



You have a very youthful appearance, which leads to roles that are very innocent and inquisitive. You’re taking on more action roles now, but is your youth a hurdle?

... What’s interesting about growing up making movies and having the opportunity to be an adolescent and then grow up is it becomes a journey of figuring out what you want to do, what stories you’re interested in. Sometimes the footing is solid and sometimes it’s not, but you always hope you have an opportunity to keep doing it. I explore all different things. I have a pretty eclectic taste in things. I have no intention to…

To punch people?

No, I have no intention to do that, but it is very fun to do action.

Pee-wee Herman was interviewed by The Playlist, and he had some very nice things to say about Jake and Jessica Biel and the whole Nailed process:

It’s a high wire bit of material, with a hard tone to nail (pardon the pun), but to hear it from Reubens, the toplining actors hit the ball right out of the park. “I would go home every single night in awe of both leads in the movie, I just could not believe what they were doing. As an actor, what they’re doing is very, very complicated and complex. It’s really hard to pull off what they did. You have to be effortless, but it’s really hard to do,” Reubens said. “And I’ve never seen anybody be so successful with something that complicated [as Gyllenhaal was]. And Jessica Biel is literally—I hate this word, but I can’t think of another word to use—is like a revelation. She’s so incredibly good in the movie, and again, no one’s ever seen her do anything like this… This is like an ingenue. It’s almost like Dorothy in ‘The Wizard Of Oz.’”

It's a good read.
