Cannes la nuit

The Cannes Film Festival seems to be a blur of movies, business and parties. Jake Gyllenhaal seems to be partaking in all that Cannes has to offer. Well, except for the beach...

At a Calvin Klein party, Jake met up with fellow jurors Sienna Miller and Rossy de Palma, as well as Emily Blunt, Rachel Weisz and Megan Ellison.

On Sunday night, Jake sat with honorees Jane Fonda and Megan Ellison, as well as Salma Hayek, at the Kering Official Cannes Dinner. The setting was beautiful, displaying the beauty and charm of Cannes:

More beautiful shots from the Carol premiere

About to see the new Villeneuve and seeing new Fuqua with Gyllenhaal later. They feel like they naturally share the day.

Hopefully he'll give us a Southpaw reaction, even if he can't do a full review.

So many things going on. Thanks UV and the rest for all the updates.

I agree with what was been saying in the previous post about Jake and his presence at Cannes. I was thinking about it yesterday, too. He is there getting the right attention but he is not all over the place, which is nice and a smart thing to do.

I hope Sicario does well today.

P.S.: H.M. you did well with the Spanish translation :)

I forgot to say the most important thing! I hope to hear good things about Southpaw today too! I may be wrong but I have the feeling Weinstein has some confidence in the film. If it gets a good reception today and generates some buzz, it's BO options will be better.

I couldn't agree more!

Not that for old anymore as for rich Russians generally.

I wonder how Dennis V. meant the note about jury, as a joke? I don't know the context. Is actually Dennis in Cannes? I haven't seen any picture of him. SV

So is Karlovy Vary, one can call it a geriatrics resort. :-)

Karloy Vary belongs to the 15 international A-Festivals, the Ischia Global Fest on the other hand looks rather dubious. A world premiere in Las Vegas would have made more sense.

Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario" gets very positive reviews. :-)

I had wondered about Denis too, SV. I hope he's in Cannes, but I doubt it. I read his comment about the jury as a huge compliment.

Can you talk about your next project, Paramount’s Story of Your Life?

My next feature will be shot in Montreal. It’s with Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker. It’s a sci-fi story that I fell in love several years ago from a short story written by Ted Chiang. The adaptation was made by Eric Heisserer. We shoot that in mid-June. So I’m in prep now, so I’m not thinking about champagne [in Cannes] quite yet. I’m really focused on my next feature right now.

Wow, UV! Thanks so much for these. You've done such a great job of capturing the excitement of Cannes for us. I appreciate it very much. It's fun to be able to share the experience, even if only as an observer.

What a beautiful setting for a film festival.

bobbyanna said...

Does anyone else think that Carol, Sicario, Nanni Moretti's film Mia Madre, and The Lobster, are emerging as festival favorites? I'm sure there are others I'm overlooking. It will be interesting to see what the Jurors pick.

Anonymous said...

Bobyanna there is Macbeth too as a potential favorite, I'd say Cotillard still have no Palm d'Or, so she might be the candidate with Blanchett in female's category, I have no courage to predict movie, because have no clue about other foreign movies, but I doubt it will be Sicario. SV

Anonymous said...

Son of Saul or Carole will win. It will be disappointing if Macbeth wins over some of the new material at for me it will be disappointing.

Anonymous said...

"but I doubt it will be Sicario"

Sicario has just as much of chance as Macbeth maybe even more so.

Monica said...

Sicario was well received, but not as much as expected. I don't see it winning awards at Cannes.
Carol, Son of Saul, Mia Madre and The Lobster are favorites, I think.

I hope that we will hear about Southpaw.

I'm hoping Macbeth is very good, but unless they do something really unique with it, I don't think it will win, either.

It's a wonder Xavier has time for Jury duty! LOL! He's had some announcements today. He just pre sold the film he'll be doing with Marion Cotillard and Lea Seydoux, It's Just the End of the World, which he starts filming after he films his first English speaking movie, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, this Fall. So Xavier is definitely the hot director to work with. I'm happy for him to have such great success at such a young age. : )

That's making me a bit nervous now.

But maybe because Southpaw is showing at this other festival now they can't show it at Cannes? I'm not sure if that would make a difference at all.

Has anyone seen ads yet for Southpaw on T.V? I've seen some for films that are to be released on July 24th and for MI 5 that is being released on July 31. Haven't seen any spots for Southpaw yet.

Something not about Jake, but from Cannes:

So reports ScreenDaily, the online version of the industry magazine Screen International. It said that "a handful of women in their 50s" was turned away from the screening of the movie "Carol," directed by Todd Haynes, because they were not wearing high heels. Just if someone wants to go there :-).

According to the website, "multiple guests, some older with medical conditions, were denied access to the anticipated world premiere screening for wearing rhinestone flats."

Not sure why they wouldn't be able to screen the film without Jake there, but I don't really understand why they were screening it to begin with.

Aside from the video posted earlier, Jake didn't have any public appearances today, that I could see. He does not seem to have attended the Sicario premiere. None of the jurors except Xavier Dolan were on the list I saw.

I love all the love for Jake's fashion. That Esquire Best of called him the King of Cannes :)

Jake talks about Letterman, whose last show is tomorrow:

"He was the first talk show I'd ever gone on," says actor Jake Gyllenhaal. "It was like being thrown in the deep end. I was 17 or 18.I remember being terrified and being ready with my stories. And there's this notorious intimidation factor with him. But over the years, we have a real genuine relationship. It is a bit of a test. He's sharp and what have you got? I love that kind of challenge."

I wonder if Jake chatted with Melanie Laurent at any of these events. I don't know if she really enjoyed making Enemy.

"I wonder if Jake chatted with Melanie Laurent at any of these events. I don't know if she really enjoyed making Enemy."

According to her comments in the Special Features bits on the DVD, she did. But her role wasn't nearly as rewarding as Sarah Gadon's role, that's for sure. Maybe a bit too much nudity and not enough dialogue for Mélanie ;)

The Southpaw screening cancellation makes no sense.

"The Southpaw screening cancellation makes no sense."

Surprised HW announced a screening at all. Its kind of puts Jake in an awkward position. Doing deals is one thing as member of a juror (Dolan) but having one of your films screened and shamelessly promoted by HW could be uncomfortable for Jake and he might find it inappropriate as a jury member.

Jake is taking his role at the festival very seriously. Best case scenario maybe the film will be a surprised screening near the end of the festival. Worst case scenario could not a lot of interest in the film (I hope not).

Monica said...

Reading the reviews on Youth, Sasha Stone think it will be well received by the Academy.

"Reading the reviews on Youth, Sasha Stone think it will be well received by the Academy. "

A lot of Cannes films every year are Academy friendly. The Academy is all about politics though, that has been proven over and over.

Ann said...

UV, thanks as always for all the updates. :)

Love the quote about David Letterman. I always enjoyed the banter between him and Jake. Same with Jon Stewart. It's a shame both Letterman and Stewart are retiring this year and it doesn't seem like Jake will get a chance to be on their shows again before they're gone.

Claudia delurker said...

Liking your blog a lot because it is always updated. Don't take it the wrong way, I need to ask Monica something. You seem the only one on the blog who hates Southpaw and Demolition, do you want them to fail? You react happy at the idea of Youth as Fox n.1 push hoping Demolition will be out. News of HW canceling the screening make you happy and sarcastic. News of HW pushing for Jake at Oscars make you upset and sarcastic. Do you want Jake to be on Oscars list? Anything can happen in eight months, fans are optimistic not hateful.

UltraViolet said...

Welcome, Claudia. Monica has been a Jake fan and a poster for many years. She has strong opinions about what is righter wrong for Jake's career. I think you're misinterpreting her comments.

I don't always agree with Monica but I don't question her motives. And you shouldn't, either, especially on a first post. Feel free to give your own interpretation of events but please don't impugn other posters.

Monica said...

I'm not rooting against Jake. Southpaw sounds not something for the Oscar because of the release date, and also because the story feels cliché. I also have no confidence in Antoine Fuqua (he never directed a good film IMO). My hope and my interest is in Jake. I also hope it will be a hit.
I'm looking forward to seeing Demolition after reading the script. I was just sharing information about Youth, because we know that this can become number 1 of FOX Searchlight, which is the same distributor of Demolition.
You know, I'm being a little realistic about the chances of Jake. I don't want to get excited again as with Nightcrawler and then disappoint. So it's good to be with zero expectations.

News of HW canceling the screening make you happy and sarcastic.
Nah I was laughing because Harvey and Page Six. This has nothing to do with Southpaw.
if he was only going to show the film with Jake, so it's good that it was canceled. The last thing I want is to see Jake desperate for Oscar.

UltraViolet said...

I agree! I was hoping Jake would go back to Letterman during the Constellations run, but he didn't. I think Jake can make it to TDS before Jon Stewart goes, though. I think JS is leaving in August.

Ann said...

I agree with you on this Monica. I've been saying that I don't see Jake getting nominated this year, not because I don't believe in him or his talent but because after last years disappointment I don't believe in the academy to recognize what he does. Plus there's a lot of competition this year for the Best Actor category so it will be tough for him again. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed after Nightcrawler last year.

UV ~ I too hope Jake can make it on TDS, he could easily squeeze in to promote Southpaw or even Little Shop of Horrors since both are in July and Jon is leaving in August.

Claudia said...

Thank you both for answering. It wasn't my intention to delurk, I'm ok with just reading. It was my impression. The time to be optimistic and happy for Jake is now. Too early for anybody to know what will work or not.

Anonymous said...

"Too early for anybody to know what will work or not"

A very true statement. Its not even June and this is only one festival.

I have high hope for Demolition and hopefully the director will come thru 3 for 3 (Lead and supporting).

bobbyanna said...

I just wanted to add, Monica has wonderful fansite in Brazil for Jake for years. Monica, I also always appreciate your comments, even when I don't agree with them.

People can be both realistic and still hope for the best, and that's how I take Monica's comments. It's goos to try to understand all the variables that can affect a movie or how an actor's work is received.

I didn't know, for example,Fox Searchlight has both Youth & Demolition. I have mixed feelings about Antoine and Southpaw, too, but I'm really excited that Jake can pull off a great performance, and I have a lot of confidence in Rachel.

The other thing is, boxing is close to Antoine's heart. He knows & understands this genre. He used to box and understands the sport.

I think Jake will raise the level of the genre the same way Denzel did with Training Day. The corrupt cop genre is riddled with cliche's but the incredible acting took it to another level. Jake will do the same. With all the reactions we've had to SP, that's the one constant theme: that Jake is incredible.

I agree with who ever said that Harvey may have put Jake in a very awkward position, but I can't fault Harvey for wanting to do something splashy for Southpaw at Cannes. Even though he very likely wanted to do a lot more, He at least promoted it even without the screening.

Maybe some people, including Harvey, who might have misspoke, didn't get word the private screening wasn't happening, so I'm not too concerned.

Some news about Little Shop of Horrors:

http://www.theatermania.com/new-york-city-theater/news/little-shop-of-horrors-casting-gyllenhaal-greene_72972.html

I already know SP release date for my country, so happy for that, it could happen they won't find distributor at all. I still believe SP can make it on awards even with cliché story and there is possible trailer just looks like whole story, but it doesn't have to be. And if, it is not a thriller, so path is important. I give it a chance in leading, supporting and cinematography at least.

I'd rather push Demolition to the next year and give the space for SP promotion, not sure if it's good for Jake to have 3 movies within 3 months.

I wouldn't put all the hate on Harvey with the cancelled screening, it's possible there wasn't enough audience to watch it, because the screening was open just for distributors. What bothers me more is that "revenge" Oscar he talked about or talking about the winning at all. This wasn't appropriate. In final result HW can help, but Jake cannot look like desperate hungry coyote (I borrowed it from NC) to get the award, he never did it and no one should push him into this position instead . SV

A story on Sienna Miller at Cannes:

Who's to say that says working motherhood has to involve toil and suffering, or that having it all (yes, terrible phrase) can’t come on the French Riviera with a glass of Champagne in hand? Miller’s work this week — and it is work — is watching the best of cinema “before anyone else and then discussing it with the Coen brothers,” she said. (She also said she’s become a third member of Jake Gyllenhaal and Guillermo del Toro’s budding best friendship.) “I don’t know what happened for me to become this lucky, but I am finding it very enriching.”

She needs to take Jake to the beach!

What happened when we went to Calvin Klein's starry Cannes party:

The highlight:
The focal point of the evening was definitely spotting Hollywood hottie Jake Gyllenhaal working the crowd but who sadly very politely declined to have his picture taken (although he did rub Beauty Director Cassie Steer’s arm as a consolation which will from henceforth remain unwashed).

Lou Bloom meets Travis Bickle.

On top of the Cannes honor (which the filmmaker shared with Jean-Luc Godard), Mommy earned an eight-minute standing ovation. This article has a little bits of information on various sightings of Jake at the amfAR gala last night

Thought this was funny Actress Alicia Vikander took the stage, jokingly saying of her absent co-presenter, Jake Gyllenhaal, “my companion had too many drinks.”

On pins and needles like Oscar morning. I hope the film is well received.

No I can't take it.

SOUTHPAW: Emotionally manipulative, but so f'n what? Expertly shot & this movie is going to be HUGE & Jake is the fucking champ. #CANNES2015

SOUTHPAW's use of color made a lot these scenes fucking popppppp. #aces

Jake Gyllenhaal is super nomination worthy if anyone is wondering &i think the Academy may bite if the movie is as huge as I think it'll be

Southpaw's boxing scenes are some of the best ever boxing fight scenes ever filmed? I can't think of any POV Boxing fight scenes b4 too

Southpaw = 8 Mile, but w/ boxing & addiction + I Am Sam (pretend this is good/man fighting for custody of his daughter works as an example).

BUT YEAH. Southpaw is so expertly shot. Probably will make my cinematography of the year

UltraViolet said...

And from the AW poster, who isn't a big Jake fan as I recall:

Jake Gyllenhaal can TOTALLY happen for Southpaw.

I'll make a post about the movie later when I can( I didn't sign anything nor wasn't told I couldn't), but this could get mid 70's level Metacritic reception and HUGE breakout potential.

I don't know if the AW guy made any of those tweets.

UltraViolet said...

This is too much. And it will really suck if the release date means Jake doesn't get his just rewards!

WOW! #JakeGyllenhaal gives a powerful knockout performance of honour&redemption in @SouthpawMovie @WeinsteinFilms.

'This is too much. And it will really suck if the release date means Jake doesn't get his just rewards!"

What do you mean?

BlueJean said...

Oh wow. That's wonderful to read!

UltraViolet said...

I mean if the July release is too early for the Oscar folks who have short memories.

BlueJean said...

Yeah :(

Well with it being announced today that officially Eminem is doing the Southpaw sound track.

Hopefully this will up the profile of the movie to broader audiences.

That's all I need to know. :)

UV, I think the guy from aw likes Jake. He was rooting for Jake by Nightcrawler, and seemed excited about Demolition.

UltraViolet said...

Oh, perhaps I'm mixing him up. That's good to know but lessens the impact a little. I was hoping it was from someone more objective, lol.

What kind of screening was this, I wonder. There's a photo of CharliXCX attending.

UltraViolet said...

EEl. Who are all these lucky people who got to see it? I'm already worried about over-hype now. (Yes, I'm crazy.)

SOUTHPAW : Jake Gyllenhaal FUCKING KILLS IT. One of the most emotional performances I've ever seen. Absolutely heartbreaking. #Cannes2015

Those first reactions sound very good to me. I hope early release won't hurt, too, but Grand Hotel Budapest comes to my mind, so I still rely it will be memorized. Now I am big fan of HW to do his job as promised. And also Erin Brokovich was released in February, so there are some exceptions. Now I am curious about Metacritics. SV

UV here is the blog of James Healy and more review about SP:

Southpaw is going to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer. Jake Gyllenhaal is phenomenal, giving a heart breaking performance. The film is very depressing and a bit manipulative, but overall incredibly touching and made me cry a lot. The plot is formulaic and predictable at times but still enjoyable. Use of color during matches is fucking beautiful. The action is so good, POV shots look so fucking cool. The worst thing Southpaw does is HEAVILY over scoring, but at least there is a new Frank Ocean song at the end

Nice shot of Jake. This might have been at lunch. The AP had a photo of the jury eating lunch but Jake and the Coens weren't in the frame.

Anna Kendrick makes the right choice.

His hair is superb in that pic, UV!

I hope he keeps that look for a bit longer. It really suits him.

This is SO exciting!!!! I'm really glad they had a chance to screen it there.

He looks incredible. This Cannes experience has been so great for him!!! He looks great, he's getting out and socializing, networking, he has enormous professional credibility, taking his "jury duty" seriously.

Good times! : )

I love jake but wow that is a lot of pressure, the movie hasn't gotten a huge following on twitter or facebook or rotten tomatoes. But I hope the blogger is right.

I can see Southpaw benefiting from word of mouth if it gets reviews that are as good as these reactions have been. Plus, once people see it and start posting about it on social media that could help it, provided it's all positive.

That and more is what I am hoping for but I just don't want Southpaw to be saddled with a summer blockbuster tag before it's even out and then the under performed label tacked to if it doesn't live up to the blockbuster label.

I would love a Jake Gyllenhaal delivers at the box office tag though.

Jake and Denis, sort of... Roger Deakins and Denis V have certainly gotten a strong professional bond, the only part missing is Jake.

No one is thinking about this film as blockbuster. Don't worry.

I think he meant to become a hit, I don't know the budget 10 million? 20 million? If this becomes a hit, it'll be very very good for Jake.

Anonymous said...

There wasn't a lot of people at the SP screening according to the poster at AW, so why did HW have it a big venue in Cannes.

I don't think Jake is going to be Harvey's focus at Oscar. Macbeth is getting raves at Cannes. Macbeth, Carol, Hateful 8 will be Weinstein's focus at Oscar.

Jakes best bet is Demolition with Searchlight supporting him and Naomi. I am just hoping Southpaw and Everest do very well at the box office.

BlueJean said...

"Anna Kendrick makes the right choice."

Aw. This is cute! :)

And I'm trying really hard not to think of the 2016 Oscars right now. We still have two months to go before 'Southpaw' is even released. So much can happen.

Hagen said...

I don't know the budget 10 million? 20 million?

"Southpaw" had a somewhat bigger budget (Pittsburgh Business Times): According to state records, “Southpaw” has been awarded a $5.8 million film tax credit. That suggests of an in-state production budget for “Southpaw” of at least $23 million, but potentially higher.

I love jake but wow that is a lot of pressure, the movie hasn't gotten a huge following on twitter or facebook or rotten tomatoes.

The social media data for "Southpaw" don't look very promising indeed. First of all I'm glad that the movie seems to deliver, everything else, like strong box office or awards, would be a bonus.

So by now the jury should be discussing about all the movies and deciding the final palmares... I do really wish to be a fly right now...it's always fun to know the juror's real opinions, alliances, even fights... hope there will be leaks about their 'secret' work...

Macbeth has good raves, but not superior, The Guardian writes Cotillard as usually can pull off a lot of emotions without saying a word, Fassbender is not that good. I feel the reviews are lukewarm, they don't offend anyone, but comparing to Carol Macbeth didn't impress that much. SV

‘Southpaw’ Screening Pumped Up By Fest Chief Thierry Frémaux – Cannes

Cannes Film Festival chief (and judo black belt) Thierry Frémaux, hosted a private screening of Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw here last night with star Jake Gyllenhaal turning up for the event. The Weinstein Co boxing picture had been in talks for the Official Selection, but was then agreed to be held back after its star was picked to serve on the jury. Harvey Weinstein showed footage at TWC’s annual preview event early in the festival. TWC releases domestically on July 24.

Frémaux, who is a keen sports enthusiast, last night praised the movie’s ability to capture boxing so beautifully. “This sport is so well-filmed on television that it’s very hard to get the same feeling in the cinema on screen like Martin Scorsese did with Raging Bull. But this film is so strong and credible. We believe Jake is a boxer first. When I was watching the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight, I remembered the movie. Jake is very extraordinary. Film after film he is having quite a career and this film is to me maybe one of his best.”
Also in attendance at the screening last night were Adrian Brody, Antonio Banderas, Michelle Rodriguez, and Dita Von Teese; as well as Charli XCX and Mary J. Blige who’d just performed at the amfAR charity event on Thursday.

I have hope FP, I just wish HW would step up the social media game or at least Jake step up his. I still think HW should have gotten Eminem more involved with the PR along with Jake. I just want Jake to do well at the BO. Jake needs a really health box office movie, over 50 million or higher.

SP may fair better internationally than Nightcrawler because it's boxing. Where in the heck is Rachel McAdams? The social media promotion is just not strong and it does not appear a lot of effort went into it.

And Jake, the next time People magazine offers you Sexiest Man of the Year, take it. LOL, it helps raise your profile.

Monica said...

Thank you, Hagen. So, Southpaw need 70 million or 100 million to be a hit?

The release date is worrying. Southpaw opens a week after Ant Man and Trainwreck, the same day of Pixels and a week before MI5.

SV, comments for Macbeth are better than I expected. But I think Jobs will be the main focus of Fassy this year.

"Guys I appreciate a bit of healthy realism, but can we at least wait and see, before immediately divest every hope?"

"Hope"... I like that! ;)

I tend to agree with FP here. We've still got two months to go until release - and those of us who happen to be European may have to wait (much) longer. I know we all want a big hit for Jake and we all want to see him recognized for his work - but it's just too soon to tell how 'Southpaw' will do at the BO.

Marketing and promotion... it doesn't just depend on Jake. There's probably much more going on behind the scenes, much more than what we get to see at this point. The next two months will tell.

"Jake needs a really healthy box office movie, over 50 million or higher."

I don't know if 'Southpaw' can be compared to any of the "bigger" summer releases.

All this talk about money... Yes, it's important, but I think Jake is doing all he can at this moment. Him being at Cannes is a huge honor for him and a wonderful opportunity to broaden his horizons, both personally and professionally. He's getting the best reviews of his career, at least for 'Nightcrawler' and (hopefully) for 'Southpaw' as well. And above all: he's being well respected as an actor.

To me, it seems that's much more important to him than any award or how much money his movies make. He isn't the 'typical' Hollywood actor (at least not to me) and I wouldn't want him to be. He's special.

Piruleta said...

I agree BlueJean but we shouldn't forget that making movies is also a business and money is important. Jake has proved he is a talented actor but he needs a hit to show he can be also a profitable actor.

Ann said...

I think the only films that have a lot of followers on twitter are established ones. The superhero/comic films, Blockbusters, films based on books, sequels, etc. Most smaller films don't get the following. I could be wrong on that though.

As Monica mentioned previously, SP is a low budget film compared to the blockbusters of the summer so I think they're doing a slow build to a lot of heavy promotion in July (I hope)

There's still two months before SP comes out. If it's mid-July and they haven't stepped up promotion for it then I'll start to worry, Lol.

Sorry I haven't done a new post. Too many photos and life has gotten away from me. Will try to put one up later tonight when I'm home.

Apparently the jury is sequestered in a secret location, without their cell phones.

Guillermo Del Toro on his jury experience:

DEADLINE: Is everybody getting along?

cannes jury 2015DEL TORO: Yeah! Yeah! But the main thing is, I’ve been a juror before and I was on the selection committee for the Spirit Awards for about three years and I must say this is really a good experience because we do have the chance to counterpoint and be very passionate about it. But it’s coming from a place of great respect and a place of great passion. To me it’s been a unique experience. I’m 50 and I’m at least halfway through my life, and this is probably one of the most delicious collegiate and enthralling forms of discussions I’ve had with people I admire, people I want to learn from and people that have a different way of seeing movies than I do and sharing. It’s been incredibly energizing for me and I think everybody seems to be having the same feeling.

DEADLINE: Is it a chance to start future collaborations as well?

DEL TORO: Maybe, but the main thing is that I feel that the bonds that you create in a jury or a selection committee are bonds that you’re going to carry for the rest of your life. The most important thing is the way you are far more regimented and far more analytical about other people’s movies somewhat wakes you up and makes you more analytical about your own work. And that’s a big change. You recognize the virtues and hopefully they illuminate the path towards them in movies. And if you see something that failed, you may have an insight on why your failures occur. It’s really a great process of learning.

When I teach, or do a masterclass, or taught film language when I was younger, people would ask ‘Why do you love that?’ and I say ‘Because I love it, and to learn.’ When I’m explaining and dissecting a particular sequence — let’s say, the staircase sequence in Notorious — when you’re dissecting that for an audience and you’re taking them through it step by step, what you’re really doing is almost rephrasing it for yourself and rephrasing what you think of cinema, what you think of stories and so forth.

About Southpaw: No one knows anything definitively. We're all just hoping at this point. I agree that Jake needs a hit, and it would be great if this were that hit.

Not because I want him to turn into someone who does only mainstream movies but because, as those Sony emails reveal, one's box office performance is a factor in casting all kinds of projects.
