This can no longer be ignored*

6/12/19: Adding some photos of Jake in Beijing, where the FFH promotion has landed:

First two from Jake's IG story - in the Forbidden City:

At a fan event:

Jake Gyllenhaal has joined the Marvel Cimematic Universe. Jake will be Mysterio, aka Quentin Beck, in the next Spider-man movie. Far From Home comes out July 5, and the second trailer dropped today (spoiler warning for Endgame):

No, I don't know what's going on. Yes, I'm annoyed that I will have to watch this movie. But it's gotten a good reaction so far, so I guess that's a plus?

Jake was in Mexico City over the weekend, where he and Tom Holland had a lot of fun, together and separately.

At the Frida Kahlo Museum:

Jake on Ellen:

Jake and company at Disney:

Tickets went on sale today for Sea Wall/A Life on Broadway. And we got the first footage of Jake and Tom from the play:

From the Variety on Broadway series - a conversation between Jake Gyllenhaal and composer/lyricist David Yazbek (Tootsie, The Band's Visit):

*This also applies to the blog - yay for a new post! Points for those who get the movie reference.

I like the title of your new post, UV. Funny and spot on. xD
I suspect that "Spiderman: Far from Home" will just fly over my head. I haven't watched a single Marvel movie and didn't know until now that there's a connection between Spiderman and the Avengers. I had to look up the movie reference; I haven't watched the film for quite a while.

Monica said...

That cat account Jake is following is Jake's cat?

UltraViolet said...

No one knows, Monica. I think someone on twitter said it, and now everyone thinks it's true.

Hagen, we are simpatico. I haven't watched any of the Avengers movies. Never seen Spiderman. The only one of these superhero movies I watched was TDK, for Heath. I'll get some references just because they have saturated American media with Avengers crap. But I don't - and don't want to - care about any of it.

It is going to be a little hard to see Jake taking a backseat to Tom Holland. That Mexico video shows that Spider-man is the star of the show, as it should be, I guess. I don't think Jake minds. But I find it mildly irritating. Though Jake and Mysterio certainly are getting lots of comments and interest.

The cat isn't Jake's cat. It belongs to his friend Bryan Ling.

I'm sure folks have seen all the photos and videos of Jake and the rest of the Spider-man cast at Disney today. Lots of cute stuff. Added a couple of photos to the post. And they will be on Kimmel tomorrow.

Also added the Ellen vids. That was a fun interview, though I wish Jake had really played the guitar.

Tweet tonight:

Tom on working with Jake:

How’s it been with Jake Gyllenhaal, working with him, because it sounds like he really got into the role, he loved the costumes and stuff, how was he to film with?

HOLLAND: He’s awesome and Jake and I got on really well and it’s interesting because when you hear the word Mysterio as a Spider-Man fan you immediately think villain, and that’s not the case in our film, he’s sort of a new addition to this world of heroes, and sort of my teammate throughout the movie. And it’s funny because Jake is such a great guy and we get on really well and it’s been fun sort of fighting these crazy monsters with him because imagining stuff is quite difficult when you’re doing it on your own, but when you’re doing it with someone else it’s a lot easier.

And also every year I have a phone call with my agents where I talk about the five actors I want to work with and the five directors I want to work with, and he’s always on the list, so the fact I get to work with him on this is pretty special.

Jake Gyllenhaal Loved Mysterio's Costume So Much He Made Marvel Put It In The Movie More:

Mysterio's recognizable costume is being properly brought to life in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and audiences will get to see even more of it thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal. Quentin Beck aka Mysterio has one of the most distinct looks of any of Spider-Man's foes. His green-scaled suit, purple cape, and gold gauntlets help him stand out with ease, but it's his fishbowl helmet that makes him instantly recognizable. As great as it looks in the pages of Marvel Comics, there was some trepidation that it would be properly realized in live-action. ...

hen Screen Rant visited the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home, producer Eric Carroll revealed during an interview that the plan was originally for the costume to not be featured as heavily. This wasn't because of how it looked, but rather because they believed that Gyllenhaal wouldn't want to wear it all the time. However, this was changed at the request of Gyllenhaal because he loved the look and the character that much.

We were just assuming - since we did end up building a fully practical costume - that our actor wouldn't want to spend time in it, and then we were like, to make sure we get the caliber actor we want for this, we made it clear, "we won't make you wear this stuff when you don't have to." So on and so forth. So, for example, this is a scene -- this is a briefing scene. We had said, "you can just look cool. You can just look like a cool mercenary man. You can have your t-shirt on, leather jacket and jeans." And he was like, "Can I be in the costume? I really feel the character, I get it." So, not only is this costume practical, but he wears it everywhere it makes sense to wear it. So we think this looks amazing. We're super excited about bringing him to the screen.

Agree on Marvel. This will be the first Jake film I'll gladly ignore. But seeing Jake and Tom together is fun.

UltraViolet said...

LOL, BJ. Sorry for the fainting spell :)

I hope the mash-up video and all the Spiderman hoopla help sell Sea Wall Tickets.

Jake has a new video on IG and Tom Holland posted a funny photo on his IG story that Jake reposted. These guys are fun.

UltraViolet said...

Also just added the new Sea Wall/A Life profile photo of Jake and Tom. It's a good one.

That twitterer and IGer linked in the last comment is a very dedicated Jake updater, btw.

I know this is poking the troll but it cracks me up that someone has posted a comment asking WTF is wrong with me dozens and dozens of times. The troll is an irony machine.

Jake having fun with an internet meme. He has really taken to that bubble!

Hi everyone,

sadly I am missing a lot of Jake´s press tour, but I am trying to catch up here and there. I may have internet and telephone again in a couple of weeks, hopefully mid-June at the latest!

Eric Carroll (producer of FFH) said in an interview that Far from home isn’t expected to be Mysterio´s only appearance in the franchise. From what I´ve read people suspect that the MCU will be diving into the multiverse after FFH.

I wonder where this is heading and how much of a commitment Jake actually really made!

UltraViolet said...

Diana, I don't think you're missing the main part of it. There will be lots more to come, I'm sure. And it will be impossible to keep up. It already is.

Lots of articles about Mysterio and speculation on how many films Jake is signed for. (I saw a tweet that said two, but no idea how reliable that is.)

This tweet on Sunday made me laugh:

I got my mom tickets to a broadway show starring Jake Gyllenhaal for Mother’s Day, so basically it’s a gift for myself.

Did folks see Jake's IG post on Mother's Day? It was very sweet. There have also been a ton of tweets making fun of baby Jake from his other IG post. People are idiots.

Annaleigh Ashford on her special, airing on PBS on Friday:

The performer is eager for the concert to air, so she can share her range. “It's a real combo platter,” she says. “I wanted to use the special not just to sing songs, but also to tell my story. Also, we have a special surprise guest: Jake Gyllenhaal joined me for a number from Sunday in the Park with George. Everyone knows he's really, really, really good at acting. But now you're going to find out how good he is at singing. You’re welcome, America!”

Would she like to work with her Sunday in the Park co-star on again? “I would literally play the weird maid in the background of his next film. I would do anything for him,” Ashford says of Gyllenhaal. “What could we do when we're older? I like to pick things that you can do when you're really old. Like we should do The Gin Game when we're 85.”

Newseum Jake tweet, with photo:

Here at the Newseum, we get many visitors exploring our amazing exhibits, and some might even get the chance to pass by a famous face. We have given tours to celebrities such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Rudd. #SecretsMW

Finally made it here when they were open, and it was as fantastic as I’ve heard. And Jake Gyllenhaal was here too!

Diana said...

Here is a little snippet from thisinterview that I wanted to share:

UNILAD: What’s it like working with someone like Jake Gyllenhaal? You seem to be surrounded by veteran actors all the time.

Tom Holland: I’m very lucky with the people I get to work with, I have these meeting with my agents every year. We sit down and we go through a list of actors I’d like to work with and a list of directors I’d like to work with and Jake’s always been on the list – so the fact that we get to do it in this circumstance is so fantastic and he, he’s amazing!

Every actor I’ve ever worked with has like a switch. When they say ‘action’ you can tell that now they’re acting but Jake doesn’t have that. He’s seamless between his characters. Sometimes it’s quite disconcerting like ‘oh he’s just talking to me he’s not doing a scene right now’ and then you’re like ‘oh shit he is doing a scene’ – so it’s been a real pleasure to work with him, I’ve definitely learned a lot.

I always think it´s interesting to hear how other actors who work with Jake in scenes experience his way of working.

UltraViolet said...

I thought that was intriguing, as well, Diana. It's not exactly method, I don't think. But sort of is. Would like a little more explanation.

More Tom Holland Gylnhal hijinks.

Very dark photo of Jake and Rufus Wainwright.

Updated the post with the conversation between Jake and composer David Yazbek, done for Variety. And speaking of stage and screen, I saw this tweet:

Ryan Malik @theaterfilms1
While perusing film legend Irwin Winkler’s autobiography (out today!), I read some interesting news... he’s in talks with Jake Gyllenhaal to reprise his Broadway role in a film version of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE!

Do we dare to dream? I think it will be really hard to transfer the magic, but I love the thought of Jake-as-George captured for posterity.

Diana said...

Ooooh, my pulse just went up a good bit, UV! That would be wonderful! BUT would we see Jake in that role again on stage then, I wonder? Would it be a "regular" movie or musical-movie? I guess a musical. Exciting thought!

Diana said...

Oh wouldn´t the world be a boring place without trolls?

UltraViolet said...

Diana, what a world it would be! :)

Sorry I've been MIA. Lots of Jake instagram stuffing on. I worry about the play sales. I don't know how well they are doing. Not sure the Spiderman fans are going to go for it!

As for Sunday, Ican't picture how they'doilm it but I thinkI hope they will try!

BlueJean said...

I'm quite sure the Spiderman fans are a completely different bunch than the Broadway folks, so I don't think worrying will change anything, UV. Maybe the Spiderman movie will gain Jake a somewhat younger audience for a while, but no-one knows how loyal they'll be in Jake's future career - considering most Jake projects are less straightforward than the Marvel stuff. I mean, I can't see a die-hard Marvel fan enjoy a movie like 'Enemy', for instance ;)

BlueJean said...

Sigh :( We should just ignore them, I know, but...

Diana said...

I was curious about the play sales so I have checked the website for tickets. I only checked the first night and was not so happy to see that there were still plenty of seats available! I haven´t had the time to check other dates but it does worry me quite a bit. I was thinking that especially the preview dates should sell a bit better as the tickets are cheaper than the ones after opening night, but doesn´t seem like it....

I would love to go but I just can´t. It really bugs me. We might not even be able to spend a long weekend in London this summer, there is still so much to do in the house that all our money goes there.

UltraViolet said...

Jake does Harrison Ford imitation. He's scheduled to be on Ellen again on June 14, when they will show more of this segment, one assumes.

As for the play: I think the tickets are too expensive. I think there were more tickets available at lower prices for SITPWG. Preview prices are not cheaper than they are after opening, I don't think. The opening night is almost sold out, and a few dates that week have a lot of tickets sold. And the first preview is selling well. But most dates have lots and lots of available seats.

One assumes the producers (including Jake) are aware of this. Hope they have some marketing tricks up their sleeves.

Diana said...

UV I haven´t checked the ticket prices after the opening, I´ve done that just now. When I went to SITPWG, tickets for shows before the opening where cheaper, I payed 250 USD for a ticket that did cost 500 afterwards. Because of that experience I assumed that tickets are cheaper before opening night, it´s what I´ve read a lot, too. Seems to depend on the show.

I still have to learn a lot about how things work on broadway... I am not sure about the ticket prices for this show, too. The two monologues are quite something to digest and because of that I feel like some people are hesitant to go and see it, even though they might love to see Jake and/or Tom. And the ticket prices might be the crucial factor. On the other side, depending on the venue you can´t set the ticket prices below a certain limit without risking an enormous deficit.

Do you think the Hudson might not have been the best choice?

UltraViolet said...

Thanks, Hagen. Lots of Jake news today with the Tonys announcement, a photocell/presser for Sea Wall/A Life. Jake also reposted the Harrison Ford video on IG. Andthere'ssome talk that he will go to China to promote FFH. (Tom Holland announced that he (Tom) would be going.)

Lots of nice photos on IHJ.

UltraViolet said...

Diana, I think the Hudson was a good choice because it's smaller than many Broadway theaters. But Ian surprised there are not more seats at lower prices. I got an email offer today for $59 off tickets, so perhaps that will result in some sales. And they just did some press, so hope that will work. I'm going to NY soon and hope to see some TV ads for it, as well. I also just saw it in one of the discount theater ticket emails I seem to get. So things are happening.

The SITPWG tickets went dramatically because the demand was so high. I'm not sure that happens for every play from previews to post-opening.

Deadline: Netflix Nabs Ubisoft’s ‘The Division’ Starring Jake Gyllenhaal & Jessica Chastain

Netflix has snatched up The Division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ film adaption based on the popular Tom Clancy online-only, role-playing video game, which was released in 2016 and currently has more than 20 million players. The follow-up game, The Division 2, was just released in March.

The announcement of Netflix’s acquisition was made during Ubisoft’s panel at E3, the video game industry trade event that officially kicks off tomorrow. Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal have been attached to star and produce this project for a while with Hobbs And Shaw and Deadpool 2 helmer David Leitch coming on board last year to direct.

Rafe Judkins will adapt the screenplay. He’s also currently creating the upcoming Amazon series Wheel of Time, based on the acclaimed fantasy novels.

I could do without this movie. :sigh:

BlueJean said...

From the article UV posted:

"... his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is likely to propel him to global superstardom"

Hm. Not sure how to feel about that. Is he ready for global superstardom? It seems so unlike Jake, being as private as he is. Will he just go with the flow and be laid back and relaxed about it? I sure hope he won't panic about the (even greater) lack of privacy this film will most likely generate for him.

UltraViolet said...

I'm not sure how much difference it will actually make to his fame, BJ. Marvel fans are zealous, but he's not playing a titular superhero. I thin it will be controlled.

Hagen, I was also hoping that movie had gone away. We'll see if it ever gets made with Jake.
