A new year - a new post!

Happy 2017, GBers. Awards season has begun, and so we begin the slow parade of watching other people get awards that should go to Jake Gyllenhaal.

Last night kicked things off with the Golden Globes. Jake was there to present and to laugh and to inspire memes, so all was not lost. A look at some of the highlights.

Happy to see Jake hanging with Amy Adams and her husband at the afterparty. He seemed to enjoy himself last night. He looked great. Wearing Ferragamo...; )

He looked like he was having fun. Good to see Jake smiling!

Jake got a BAFTA nom for lead actor for Nocturnal Animals. Nice to see him getting some recognition finally! The movie got 9 noms in total.

BlueJean said...

This post put a huge smile on my face! :)

And great news about the BAFTA's too!

Real Sal said...

yay!!!!! I'm so happy for him! That's really brightened my day :) thanks for the news, CC.

Chica said...

Great post and he looked so good that night! So happy to hear about the Bafta nomination!

Hagen said...

Very cool pictures!

The BAFTA nomination is a very pleasant surprise. Though I would have nominated him for 'Demolition'.

Glad for Jake

Scott said...

Jake should just move to Great Britain pick up the accent and pretend he's English and maybe then the Academy would take notice because Jake's talent surely isn't lost on the Brits.

Real Sal said...

I would love it if he moved to the UK ;) He is well loved here. Same with Maggie.

Scott said...

Forgot to say thanks for the new post UV. I love that redux of the Demolition dance and it has certainly take off in social media. It's nice to see that Jake has so many fans who appreciate him.

UltraViolet said...

The dancing video is great. And it takes a moment that Jake was being sort of dragged for - seeming to scowl at Donald Glover - and makes it happy and funny.

Hagen, I also wish Jake had been nominated for Demolition, but we knew that wouldn't happen, sadly.

I'm wondering now if Jake will go. When he was nominated for Nightcrawler, he was doing Constellations and did not go. It's the day after the first preview, and he'd have to fly all night. So it seems doubtful. Also, he won't win.

But thanks, as ever, to the BAFTAs for recognizing Jake.

Monica said...

Brits love Jake! So happy!!

bobbyanna said...

I hope he goes! I'm thrilled for him!

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Congratulations Jake! The British really do love Jake. Good to see NA getting some recognition, I hope he will be able to attend.

EFK said...

Hey all, don't know if this had already been posted....I just saw it....from TIFF. It's Trevante Rhodes, who is brilliant in Moonlight, in a Hollywood Reporter video saying Jake is one of his big role models. Pretty awesome. :)

So glad Jake was at the Golden Globes, even though he should have been nominated. He looked great. Thrilled he got a Bafta nom! Sounds like slim chance but I hope he is able to go. That's such a good awards show and they love Jake!

And can't stop watching that video meme! It's so perfect LOL. Hope Jake saw it. ;)

Back to lurking...

I'm really excited for Okja. That's the movie he should win an Oscar for (not that I've seen it, but it looks crazy and interesting)

Do you think there's a chance for a nomination this year? I lost hope, but I'm regaining it (although still skeptical)

#JakeGyllenhaal and @tatianamaslany deliver extraordinary performances in @StrongerTheFilm @lionsgatemovies @boldfilms Release Date soon!

Scott said...

Well Gary is the producer so I wouldn't expect anything less from him, lol. Mark Wahlberg's film about Boston did not do well this weekend, I am not saying that means anything for Stronger.

I kind of hope Stronger is another Nightcrawler, no hype from producers way before the release but a great movie unexpected.

BlueJean said...

I have high hopes for 'Stronger' as far as Jake's performance is concerned. It's the project I'm most looking forward to.

"Do you think there's a chance for a nomination this year?"

Ehm... no. I'd be totally, completely surprised if that would happen. But then I also didn't expect Aaron's Golden Globe win at all - or the many BAFTA nominations. So who knows?

When will the Oscar nominations be announced? ;)

Thanks for posting that Trevante Rhodes video I love hearing about fellow actors who admire Jake.

Producer hyperbole, to be sure, but Gary MW also tweeted this:

The producers and director of @StrongerTheFilm were all in tears watching the final cut. Could not be more excited to show the world.

If this is coming out in April, they need a trailer. I'm not sure April is the nighttime, coming so close to Life. I don't really know where it's best to put it.

Don't think I've ever seen this before. Congrats to Kirsten on her engagement.

Some rumors about Sunday in the Park: Rehearsals have started or will start next week. It will be fully staged, and half the cast will be different from the concerts. No idea what's true.

UltraViolet said...

BJ, about Nocturnal Animals: I don't think I answered your question about my issues with Nocturnal Animals. Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen it.

My main objection was to the abortion storyline. I understand what a betrayal that was to Edward, and I believe he had every right to feel hurt and angry. But I would have preferred it if someone had uttered the truth - that it was Susan's body and her decision. I wasn't crazy about the pro-life undercurrent.

And I wish the novel hadn't used extreme violence against women as its plot/as the device through which Edward gets his literal revenge on Susan.

I also had some issues with the sequence of events in the novel - where does Bobby go, for one thing. He's supposed to be helping Tony, but he abandons him, leaving Tony to deal with Ray.

I also sort of disagree with the fundamental assumption that Tony is weak. I'd love to hear an explanation, other than "have a gun," of how one would have gotten away from Ray and the other two. Mistakes were definitely made, but once the car got a flat, they were all screwed.

So I'd never want this to win Best Picture, but I did think it was beautifully shot, scored, edited and acted. And it certainly stuck with me. I've found myself thinking about it days later, each time I have seen it. And Jake's performance is certainly better than many overhyped awards contenders. Would love to hear his name next Tuesday, but I'm not holding my breath.

Real Sal said...

UV, I agree with you on all points. Did you read the book? There was a lot of significant character development that occurred when Tony attempts to pick up the pieces of his life after the 'incident'. Wish they had included that.

First time seeing that picture of Jake and Kristen. They seemed so in love :)

J said...

I hope they save Stronger for the fall. I get that they might be positioning it as a sort of counter-programming, but I'm not expecting great reviews, and we know what happened last time Jake had a film with a middling reception released in April,

BlueJean said...

"BJ, about Nocturnal Animals..."

Thanks, UV. I saw the movie siz weeks ago, and I really should see it again! But I do remember thinking the abortion scene (in the car, with Jake / Edward outside in the rain) felt kind of... unfinished. There was more they could have done with that, I think.

Also, I agree that Bobby disappears at the end. He shouldn't have left Tony on his own.

It seems NA already has a DVD release date: February 21 (USA), according to IHJ.

bobbyanna said...

Blue Jean: "I do remember thinking the abortion scene (in the car, with Jake / Edward outside in the rain) felt kind of... unfinished."
Yes! I had the same reaction.

The way I interpreted the scene, I felt he was upset at her cheating and about him being shut out of her life at that moment, not necessarily that he was angry about her getting an abortion per se.

It seemed as if she had totally disconnected from their lives. At that moment the shock of them seeing him standing there in the rain watching them, & he was clearly enraged and hurt, distracted me from any discussions that could/should have occurred about her right to choose.

Real Sal: "There was a lot of significant character development that occurred when Tony attempts to pick up the pieces of his life after the 'incident'. Wish they had included that."
I agree. I think there were problems with editing in general, and I'm curious why they didn't do more with Tony's character. Also the disappearance of Michael Shannon's character was odd. Was he dead?

I definitely have to watch it again. there is so much I need to pick up on, that I missed the first two times...: )

Love the photo of KiKi & Jake. they were so young. : )

UltraViolet said...

To be clear: I don't think the right to choose discussion belonged in that car scene. Not sure where it should have gone. I just would have liked it if someone in the movie had asserted it as her right.

Variety: Stephen Gaghan to Direct ‘The Division’ Movie Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain

Maura said...

The Division is making me really nervous, for some reason.

Anonymous said...

For what is worth, they hired an Oscar winner to write and direct the movie.

Stephen Gaghan won the Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for writing Traffic and was nominated for Syriana.

2 Oscar nominees and 1 winner is reason to be less nervous.

I've been meaning to post that Christian Borle interview. Love that he was so complimentary toward Jake. I saw Borle in Something Rotten and Falsettos, and he is a great performer.

I posted the AA interview previously, but I don't think anyone noticed :) Love hearing her talk about Jake but I wish she had talked more about meeting Jake/first rehearsals/that kind of thing.

About The Division: I'm going to try to be optimistic but there's not a lot of reason to be.

SAG-AFTRA interview is up!

SAG interview is great (from Jake) but the interviewer is horrendous. She called Hugh Jackman Hugh Grant and asked Jake what it was like to be in Patriots Day instead of Stronger. I stopped watching after that.

Please forgive me UV but I think it's important. A reminder to those who live in the US avoid all things Trump tomorrow, TV, internet etc. If we ignore him it will drive him nuts and bring a strong message to the media. I have boycotted ABC nighttime shows because of that disgusting special that they bump really good shows for (all starring women) on the Thursday night line up. It was supposed to be the premiere of the new seasons of How to get away with Murder, Greys Anatomy and Scandal.

Steve Wynn is now an economic enemy. I will never buy another piece of Ralph Lauren clothing. Karl Laagerfield of course is a Trump fan based on his derogatory comments about Michelle Obama so not surprised about of his love of the Orange one.

Even if you do not live in the USA, do not watch, read or click anything Trump related during tomorrow if you can. I know it's not much but to a narcissistic being like Trump it will matter.

Still love Jake though.

Also, some important information - try to leave your TV on during the inauguration but have it turned to any channel that is NOT broadcasting the inauguration. This will divert ratings from the inauguration. Turning your TV off does not reduce the inauguration ratings.
I can't believe it's really happening.

Maura said...

I feel really horrible for you. I'm so, so sorry. I won't be watching.

BlueJean said...

"SAG interview is great (from Jake) but the interviewer is horrendous."

It's Jenelle Riley! She has interviewed Jake many times before. I like her, she takes the time to let Jake answer and doesn't rush him. Also, she's very supportive of Jake in her online comments etc - always speaks highly of his work.

Won't comment on Trump.

I watched the arrivals on C Span, and I watch President Obama & Mrs. Obama greet them at the White House. I also watched C Span when President Obama & Michelle left on the helicopter. When they arrived at Andrews to get on the plane that would take them to California for a vacation, there was a huge crowd of wellwishers waiting to send them off in style, & President Obama make some remarks to the crowd along the same lines he's been making for the past couple of weeks.

So that was how I spent Inauguration Day. I like C Span because of the unscripted moments. I was please to see President & Mrs. Carter looking do well. He's a personal favorite of mine. Hillary was there with PResident Clinton, looking poised and lovely all in white and she was greeted warmly by many, including former President Bush and Laura.

I didn't watch the swearing in, or the Inaugural address, nor do I care to watch any TV news "shows" parsing out his speech and "analyzing" it. He insults people regularly, he lies constantly and he encourages intolerance and bigotry.

Life is too short. I have way too much to do. I intend to be actively engaged in issues. I know what Trump stands for, I know that he is not the main one to focus on. He's a distraction.

Paul Ryan the Speaker of the House, and Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority leader are evil men. The media better be paying attention to them, and to the people Trump has nominated to fill his cabinet. So much corruption in one place is really breathtaking.

I don't expect the Senate to conduct a robust investigation into the role of Russia in our elections. But I do expect that the international intelligence community and news coverage from outside the U.S. will tell the tale.

UltraViolet said...

I watched the actual Oath. I had to. I think Ryan, McConnell, Trump and Pence are all evil.

Hillary showed class by going, something the sparse attendees did not return by booing her when she appeared on screen. Plus ca change.

FYI: Unless you have a box that's recording ratings, you can watch anything. You have no effect on the ratings.

Not sure if folks saw this photo.

I enjoyed the SAG Q&A, despite Jake's discomfort with his shirt. Not sure what was happening there. As BJ said, the interviewer likes Jake and is a supporter. I thought some questions were good and some repetitive or throwaways. But there were a lot of great, unscripted moments, like the stuff with the sign language interpreter or the revelation that Jake is intimidated by Jason Schwartzman.

Ph0enicks said...

Well that was today's learning moment - confirmed by snopes.com - Neilson ratings are alive and well. Unless you're a selected family and presumably consent to participate, your TV viewing habits don't affect ratings. http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/solutions/measurement/television.html

Scott said...

True about TV but there was so much elbow room at the Mall on Washington. And I am sure Toby Keith fans were delighted to be able to pick their spots at the concert. I am this is how it will be spin concerning the lack of crowds. There were probably more protesters in Washington DC today that at the ceremony. Unless it's fake news.

I was at work so that was a good distraction from the disaster that is unfolding. It felt like a funeral.

A hostile country hijacked our election, worse than Watergate.I predict he will be impeached but unfortunately we will be left with Pence.
Thanks for the links to the interviews? It's a pleasant distraction.
