Nocturnal Animals and Jake Gyllenhaal made a triumphant appearance on the Lido in Venice last week. There was high praise for the movie and its stars, both on-screen on on the red carpet. Trying something new for GB, here are some Instagram photos and videos that show off the style - and the fun - of the Venice Film Festival.
(Thanks to all the IGers for posting such great shots and comments.)

I don't know if this post will take forever to load for people. But embedding the IG posts is so much easier than copying all the pictures. And this way, the original poster is acknowledged.
It's a random assortment, but representative, I hope. I tried to post ones where Jake was smiling or where the reaction was too funny, like the teenagers pic.
Still no trailer, BJ - I guess you're not impressed by the honey badger? LOL. Perhaps they are waiting until after Toronto? I don't get the strategy. If there is one.
This is the story about the teenagers.
Great pics,
The drawing of BBM scene is so awesome and it was great that he signed it.
Jake could be 007, that walking tux shot is vintage James Bond confidence.
To the girl who thinks she is not looking good, we all should be so lucky to not look good like her.
Awesome post and it's nice to see that Jake is appreciated internationally.
Thanks so much for all the pics! He looks so good! :)
Jake has such a beautiful smile. I was tired of seeing him too seriously!
Interview with Tom Ford/New pic on the set of Nocturnal Animals
Thanks Monica! I didn't know much about Tom Ford, so that was a very interesting interview. I have yet to watch 'A Single Man'.
The first NA official NA poster is out and it's all Jake.
OK not just Jake but he is all that matters to me, lol. His likeness was the first one to pop up on twitter for me.

Is Jake going to be at TIFF?
Jake wasn't on the confirmed guest list that TIFF put out a few weeks ago. The premier of NA is Sunday night so if he's there that'll be the day we find out I guess.
A lot of NA love on twitter from TIFF mostly Oscar talk for Shannon. not a lot for Jake or even Amy.
Talk is talk and talk is cheap. Critics push personal agendas for months until voting starts.
What matters is what industry people vote for and they sometimes snub the most deserving praised actors like Jake in Nightcrawler. Good reviews for NA and a strong campaign can make industry people vote for Jake, Amy, Micheal and Tom.
Talk is cheap... yeah.
I've actually decided to try not to read too many reviews for NA - or to pay too much attention to the Oscar buzz. Not because I'm not interested, but because it's been like that for a lot of Jake's movies and in the end... nothing happened. Let's just say I don't want to get my hopes up too high this time.
I already know Jake's performance in NA will be great, cos he's usually great in everything he does lately. I just hope the movie itself will live up to everyone's expectations. That it'll be good (most importantly) and that it'll be successful - and that doesn't necessarily mean Oscars (to me).
UV is at TIFF right now, isn't she? Have fun, UV!!!
Nocturnal Animals was awarded the Grand Jury prize in Venice.
That's a big deal. Obviously that jury is made of forward thinking out of the box members. Congrats to Tom Ford and Jake, Amy, Michael, Aaron and all the cast.
And congrats to Emma Stone and the guy who took Jake's Venice award.
Bravo, it's a huge deal. It makes NA an awards contender above other overhyped movies.
Goes to show that Oscar pundits rave about their actors&directors darlings and shamelessly campaign them, but they don't know squat about what the industry will vote for. Grand Jury prize bodes well for Tom and ALL the actors, not just the pet favorites.
I'm thrilled that Jake's NA is getting such positive response from audiences, critics, and now one of the most prestigious festivals out here. If I recall, Brokeback Mountain won the Golden Lion at Venice. The Grand Jury prize is also a wonderful honor. They really are the only two that matter at the VFF.
From Movie City News:
Finally, what is it about Jake Gyllenhaal in low-light that is so cinematically compelling?
In Nightcrawler, with gaunt skin stretched back for an effect that aged him dramatically, Gyllenhaal showed us his understanding of crepuscular. Prior to that role, with Prisoners, the actor displayed his ability to play a more traditional hero — a leading protagonist far different from the boy who was Donnie Darko.
It’s clear that Gyllenhaal, with his diverse filmography and career trajectory, is committed to topping himself over and over again. In Nocturnal Animals, he displays a heady mix of pathetic brilliance and fragile madness, distilling essentially the titles (and emotional ranges) of his previous films into something profoundly exciting. The actor feels winningly resistant to quick sketches of his “type,” or in-character allegiances, or whether or not his character is, well, vulnerable. Is he even the rank of actor that dies in movies? It’s a joy to toy with that question while we watch him, often as his eyes bug out of his head, in Tom Ford’s astounding thriller.
That's wonderful! :)
"Bravo, it's a huge deal. It makes NA an awards contender above other overhyped movies"
I try to look at this in context, Italy really loves movies and they do think outside the box. NA has not made the splash at TIFF like the other so called overhyped movies. There still other movies that did not play at Venice that are overshadowing NA at TIFF. As for the BBM comparison, it was directed by a more experienced director and well known screen play writers although it was robbed of the best picture due to narrowed minded Academy members who campaigned against it.
And unfortunately Jake is being overshadowed in most glowing reviews of NA by Adams and Shannon (deservedly so by Shannon). I don't think Arrival will be in Awards play either. I think the awards will again be what they are always, the same old same old recycled. How someone can say that a musical has been reinvented when musicals have been around for the last few years is just BS. It's like people (critics) decide what movies should be on awards radar a full year before they are released and the Academy buys into it.
I hope NA does well at the box office because that will help Jake for his 3 movies coming out next year; two of which is he the lead. I don't trust awards anymore especially Oscars as they reek in more ways then I care to mentioned including Oscars so white (and that will not change except for the Viola and Denzel critics' predictions even before the movie is out). I am come to loathe the Academy for so many reasons.
That's not to say I am taking anything away from Tom Ford success in Venice but I do think the Academy wives will be offended seeing themselves mocked in the nude scenes (LOL). I really think the Academy sees itself as having moral standards and they are still way too many older and middle age narrowed minded Academy members (cough Eastwood).
I do trust SAG and the BAFTA a little more although SAG could also be more of a popularity contest than performance.
"I think the awards will again be what they are always, the same old same old recycled."
Scott, that's exactly what I meant by saying I don't want to get my hopes up too high. I know far too little about the movie industry to comment on your Academy rant, but we've been disappointed so many times. People are STILL talking about BBM not getting Best Picture - and Jake not even getting nominated for Best Actor for 'Nightcrawler' was ridiculous.
"And unfortunately Jake is being overshadowed in most glowing reviews of NA by Adams and Shannon"
I've noticed that too. I'm curious to know what UV's "verdict" on NA will be. She'll probably be the only one on here who has seen it already.
Seeing it tonight, yes. Will check in with a reaction as soon as I can!
Hit post too soon. I just want it to be a good movie. Yes, I want Jake to win an Oscar. And yes, it's annoying that the Amy Adams Is Overdue narrative is driving almost all the coverage. But I think we need to let go of that. Jake appears to be at the top of his game and having a great time. Let's join him, okay?
Love that review from Movie City News above. Will come back to comment more on NA and other movies I've seen. Off to see Loving in a bit.
So jealous you got to go to TIFF, can't wait to see your thoughts on NA!
I noticed the reviews don't seem to praise Jake's performance, mostly Adams and Shannon.
Ugh. Just typed out a whole post and the wifi knocked me off. I have to crash, so I''l be brief. NA is a wild ride. Stellar acting across the board. Jake is a standout.
The roles here definitely offer Jake new things to play. He runs the gamut of emotions beautifully. He's strong, vulnerable, scared, sexy, sweet, sad. Great chemistry with all his costars, especially Amy. It would be great to see them in something where they are onscreen together more.
There is a lot of Jack Twist in the role of Edward, the author. Similar accent, similar characteristics (sensitive, romantic). Tom Ford even tips his hat to Jake as a gay icon, which I can spoil more if people want.
I think since Amy frames the movie, she's getting noticed more, perhaps. It is her story. And the characters Jake plays are (mis)perceived as weak. I think maybe some critics have trouble with characters that bring up their own insecurities or fears.
Michael lShannon is being overpraised for an over-the-top performance. Entertaining but not very deep.
The audience was very enthusiastic. Standing ovation which is not a surprise. Lots of chatter as folks were leaving. I heard one woman say it was the most intense film she'd ever seen. With about 20 minutes to go. the film lost sound and suddenly stopped. At a very intense moment. It was jarring. You couldn't tell if it was part of the movie at first.
Ask away and I'll answer tomorrow.

Whoa! You won't be surprised I'm enormously curious, UV! :) ;) I love Jack Twist. Please tell!
So glad you liked it! Is it "dark"? You know I like Jake dark ;)
"And yes, it's annoying that the Amy Adams Is Overdue narrative is driving almost all the coverage."
Jake Is Overdue as well! ;)
UV, what did you think of the opening sequence? That scene seems to be generating the most controversy. Is it as bad as some have made it out to be?
Thanks for your review UV! I'm really really looking forward to seeing NA.
Jack Twist will always be one of Jake's most iconic characters, and I'm glad to know his spirit hovers around "Edward."
So many interesting films at TIFF, sorry I couldn't get there this time. My list is getting longer, but NA is at the top. Looking forward to your recaps.

His character is over the top in the book, so I'm not surprised by the comments because it's this kind of performance that people always like. There's a difficulty in recognizing subtle performances.
About the opening sequence: I don't think it was exploitative or offensive. I don't buy Tom Ford's bullshit explanation of how he found the women beautiful in the end. As someone said on twitter: I'll believe it when I see a woman like that depicted as an actual human character in a Tom Ford movie.
My friend found Tom Ford unbearably pretentious at the Q&A. I find it hard to believe he's sincere. But he directed a hell of a movie. I was irritated at today's Q&A that Cameron Bailey asked about the cast, then singled out only Amy Adams, and TF went on and on about her.
About the Jack Twist reminders: I find it beyond irritating that some people see Jack Twist in every Jake performance and view his entire career only through that prism. So it sort of pains me to say it, but there IS a lot of Jack in Edward and Tony. Some Homer, too. It's the Southern accent thing, partly. But it's also in the character and certain line readings.
"I find it beyond irritating that some people see Jack Twist in every Jake performance and view his entire career only through that prism."
*giggles* I know what you mean, UV ;) It was like that for me at first, because BBM was what I discovered Jake in. But now I see some Adam in his performances as well sometimes... and Loki. And Donnie. And Davis ;) ;)
Saw the movie yesterday. Still thinking about it. It is stunning to look at, almost like a piece of art!
Hmm maybe when Tom Fors designs clothes in plus sizes I'll believe he's as enamoured of the fuller female form...
Given a lot of the focus seems to be on Amy I was surprised that Jake's role is as substantial if not more so than hers. Because he's appearing in the 2 roles he certainly has a lot of screen time and far more emotional scenes than Amy I would say. And he looks so young as Edward in the flashbacks!
I'm not sure if it's a movie I could watch multiple times as the feeling of dread is so pervasive that I was on the edge of my seat at times. It was very unsettling.
And honestly Brokeback didn't enter my mind once while watching the movie or watching Jake with the accent. Yes there is a nod to his being attractive to gays but you can see why when you see him as the younger Edward ;)
I've booked tickets to see it at the London Film Festival. Unfortunately, the Friday evening is all booked up but managed to get for the Saturday morning.
Yay! Good for you, Sal. Glad you enjoyed it, too, Canuck_Cutie. (Good point about TF's designs.) I can't wait for folks to see this one. And unlike last year, most won't have to wait long.
Someone on AW posted that the trailer will be shown in theaters this weekend, so it should also be online.
Teaser for the teaser trailer. Ridiculous!
This is easy for me to say, I realize: I'm glad I hadn't seen any of this before I saw the movie. But if I hadn't seen the movie, I know I wouldn't be able to resist the trailer.
It seems to be common now to get teasers for trailers and even teasers for teasers, Lol. Very silly but I admit it's effective. I can't wait to see the full trailer. Nice touch adding in the Venice Grand Jury award at the beginning.
LOL @ people on AW saying Amy is getting top billing over Jake when it looks like they just went in alphabetical order based on last name
That's a very intense "teaser." Damn.
TRAILER IS HERE!!! FINALLY!!!

Spoiler alert: It looks amazing
Maura
Why would they put a spoiler in a trailer? I haven't seen the trailer yet.
I think the spoiler alert is just for fun. But I would say that there are spoilers in the trailer. So be warned.
New post.
