There is a scene where Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Lou, goes to a pawn shop to sell a stolen bike. When we arrived to shoot, the blocking didn't jell. It was cinematically static. The issue was inherent to the scene -- it's just two guys bartering separated by a counter. Our DP, Robert Elswit, Jake and I started talking. We tried Lou holding the bike up to show how light it was. Putting the bike on the counter to point out details. Nothing worked. As the clock ticked down and we were about to lose the location, Jake began riding around the shop as he spoke. It was so incongruous, and he did it so well, going around and around, that we stopped talking. Inspiration had struck, and we played the entire scene with Lou riding as he bartered with the owner.
I loved that scene! The bicycle in the pawnshop. There really was no other way to do it. It says so much about the character, that whole combination of menace and charm, the "con."
Can't wait for the DVD. I wonder if there'll be more "making of" tales from Dan, Rene, Riz, & Jake. I hope so.
That French journalist's enthusiasm was charming. (I'm in love with Jake's look for Demolition.)
BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE BEHIND THE CAMERA Damien Chazelle, Whiplash Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler Gillian Robespierre, Obvious Child Jon Stewart, Rosewater
Now I start to have feeling he has more chance for Oscar nomination than GG. But Spirit Awards are better predictor, they are more prestigious I would say than critics, I mind NBR though. Also AFI may help more than some LA critic. SV
Now I start to have feeling he has more chance for Oscar nomination than GG. Jake won't have to compete with Michael Keaton for a Golden Globe.
I agree, it was really fun to watch Lou bargaining with the guy from the pawn shop. I hope to watch the original version of "Nightcrawler" next weekend. So far I've only seen a dubbed version.
At risk to sound cheesy or hypocrite, and even if i would love to see him nominated, I'm mostly happy to watch him being critically acclaimed. It's great to know that directors want him to play great charactors, colleagues respect and admire Jake, and audiences love his work.
If two years ago you say to someone that Jake is better than Ryan,Fassy or Hardy ,you would probably receive an odd look or an "he's good but they are on another level". Now, no one would be surprised for such a non bold affirmation. To me,that's greater than any award.
I care about Jake because he's a great actor. What he has achieved these last years is better than an Oscar or SAG nomination: recognition. That's the angular corner to keep playing, and pulling off great characters, which is my personal goal regarding Jake, to watch him portraying inspiring choices, Oscar or Oscarless.
Hagen, he doesn't compete with Keaton, he is sure in any category, if he will ever compete on awards, it will be with Bradley Cooper or David Oyelovo, they will be 5th nominee to close the quintet. So even if Keaton is in comedy, he wouldn't be the one who pushes Gyllenhaal out. I suppose Redmayne, Cumberbatch, Keaton are locked, the further are open and JG still can get in. Also there may be one complete surprise. SV
"Jake doesn't owe anyone a photo, but I hope he doesn't speak to service people with his headphones on. "
He looks really tired in that photo but the responses were in another language I did not speak. People think they are entitled to ask a celebrity no matter who it is for anything even when they are out doing normal things. Its a shame that people want to attack Jake.
But in this case he's at a restaurant eating. I get the feeling that if he had taken a picture with the person, more of the employees and customers would have asked as well. I noticed the other celeb photos were celebrities were not sitting down to a meal.
I wish the person would say how much Jake left in tip, probably a lot.
As I look at the list of nominees, there are no surprises in general. Really glad for Jennifer Aniston and Maggie, too.
But I'm disappointed that Rene and Riz were overlooked. I try not to disparage other actors, but I saw Birdman, and while I like Emma Stone very much, IMO, that particular performance was unremarkable in every respect.
I adore Naomi Watts, too, and I think she's a brilliant actor, But I found her performance as Daka, the Russian prostitute in St. Vincent, kind of self-conscious. She's always good, but this wasn't her best work.
I wonder if the SAG voters had a chance to look at American Sniper or Inherent Vice before they nominated. Often SAG tracks pretty closely with Oscar nominations.
The screenings of American Sniper were sent before Thanksgiving. Surely they saw Inherent Vice. Selma didn't send screenings. So, it was expected to be snubbed. I think the same about Unbroken. Sad that Marion was snubbed. Harvey is an idiot for not campaign for her for The Immigrant. She's also great in Two Days, One Night.
Thanks, Monica. I just wondered if the SAG voters had access to all the possibilities. I feel better knowing they saw the films and made the selections they made.
Although, I feel very bad about Marion, too. There was a lot of buzz for her, Emily Blunt, and Jessica Chastain.
Didn't one of the SAF categories nominate 6 instead of 5?
That's just awesome, SAG nomination is so important. Happy for both Gyllenhaals, Duvall, Arquette. I haven't seen Naomi Watts performance, but she is so overdue on awards, that I wish her this one.
This is something how I imagine Oscar actor's lead category :-).
But Aniston over Cotillard and Chastain? Come on....SV
Uhh! Really happy for SAG nominations!! Well deserved! I can't judge the other nominations, 'cause most of the movies hasn't been released in Italy yet... but I'm also really happy for Mark Ruffalo's double nomination...
IK can't believe how many responses this post has received. Mostly because I have no idea who the poster is... She is an italian blogger and she is also in a cable tv programme about make up... She said she asked him for a picture and he answered "Not today"... The other responses are not so nice with Jake (though, in some points, really funny!)
Variety: Jake Gyllenhaal, “Nightcrawler” "With a nomination like this, I think really only an actor knows that journey. I think really only an actor and how they prepare can empathize with that, so it's really an honor to have done the work to create the character and have other actors say, you know, 'You done good.' Because they've been there. It's an honor. For lack of a better word or a better phrase, it really, truly is an honor."
On whether or not his newly buffed physique and boxing skills for the upcoming film "Southpaw" may have given him an edge, because voters know he could beat the crap out of them if they didn't vote for him: "You learn it so you don't ever have to use it."
Hi All, I've been your silent reader. I'm a huge fans of Jake Gyllenhaal (who doesn't :P) I watched all his movies. All of it and watched Jake transform into and amazing actor and off course you can't ignore the face ;) and it's weird that I'm the one that excited and super happy that he get nominated. Finally! He should have been nominated on prisoners or enemy. Oh well, congrats for Jake, Maggie and Ruth! - Too bad I can watch they play coz in the other side of the planet! Hi five to all gyllenhaalics out there!!

LOL:
#nightcrawler is the perfect Christmas movie for the family. So sweet and festive!
And again, LOL:
I had a dream that I had a superpower that summoned Jake Gyllenhaal and I used that superpower too much and he told me to stop
At the end of this interview, Rene Russo gushes about Jake's performance.
Interesting filming tidbit:
Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler

Love that kind of story!
Bless Rene for that!

(sigh) Jake in a tux.
Enjoyed this new post!
I, too, hope we'll get to see some deleted scenes on the Nightcrawler DVD!
And did anyone notice the French interviewer called Jake "Jack" (at 0:33)?! Excellent! :)))

Otherwise no nominations for NC.

Via AwardsWatch: Ana Maria Bahiana, one of the 91 members of HFPA thinks that a Golden Globe nomination for Jake is possible ("Keep an eye on him").
Fingers crossed for tomorrow and Thursday I'll be watching
I'll have my fingers crossed too Mary! Love the bicycle story, Jake was totally into the character of Lou Bloom.
I love the commercials popping up here of Constellations, can't wait to see it!

Welcome old lurker! I agree in principle. But when it's Awards Season and all the talk is abut the nominees, it's hard to think of the bigger picture.
Apologies for the annoying captcha. Blogger seems to have initiated it without asking anyone!
Cute photo:
Did my good deed of the day, swiped Jake Gyllenhaal's pretty lady friend through the subway ☺️😍 #newboyfriend #jakegyllenhaal

That was for Jake's SAG nomination btw. Hope SAGActor was watching!
So happy.
Maggie Gyllenhaal too!
Yay so happy for Jakehope he was watching too!!!
I'm very happy that Jake was nominated. That's a major achievement. :-)
Yes I was UV and double yay! A well deserved nomination for a off the charts performance.
And Jennifer A the Good Girl reunion done right.
Oh my Maggie too? Oh the pancakes are going to great this morning.
I am so happy happy happy happy.
OMG! That's wonderful news. Wonderful. It means a lot when your peers recognize you! Wow!

"I think the same about Unbroken."
Unbroken was nominated for ensemble stunt group by SAG so it was seen by someone from SAG.
Aww:
Jake Gyllenhaal was walking his dog when he heard about his SAG nom. "He actually, strangely, started barking really loud." #SAGAwards
Jake Gyllenhaal says he's "super psyched" that sister Maggie also scored a SAG nom. "I love her more than a million awards times infinity."
Gyllenhaal on "Good Girl" costar Aniston's #SAGAwards nom: "We know her publicly, but it’s hard to break that mold & it seems like she has."
Also interesting, from the Film Stage's Nathaniel:
Nathaniel Rogers
@nathanielr
just realized that GYLLENHAAL party i’m going to tonight is going to be more festive than it might’ve. Thanks @SAGawards
What's that all about?
So sweet from Jake.
Thank you, Jess.
"What's that all about?"
He play goes into reviews next week or an early Birthday party? Or another screening?

CONGRATULATIONS to my man JAKE GYLLENHAAL on his incredibly well-deserved SAG nomination for NIGHTCRAWLER! Let's hope the Academy notices.
Good to see many people happy for his nomination on twitter and other forums.
Yay for Jake! God! I can't wait to see this film!

Interesting interview with James Newton Howard about Nightcrawler's soundtrack (which a lot of people seems to be hating)
I'm so happy for Jake! What a honor it is to receive this nomination from his peers. Love what he said about Maggie, congrats to her too!
Fingers crossed for the GG' s this morning!
THEY DID IT. Congratulations to both Jake and Maggie on their GG nominations. I can't imagine how proud their parents must be.
Yay Jake and Maggie!!!
Congrats to Jake so happy for you you deserve it. Congrats to Maggie too. Two down one to go:)
Woohoo, congrats Jake and Maggie.
No matter what happens next month this has been a great week for Jake beyond expectations.
I'm so happy that Jake has made it into the "Best Actor" field!
Such wonderful news!!!! And so well deserved! And to add the cherry on top, Ruth Wilson got nominated for The Affair, the TV series.
"Ruth Wilson got nominated for The Affair, the TV series."
Congratulations to Ruth, maybe they all will sit together. Kind of disappointed there were no other nominations for Nightcrawler.
Yay for Jake, Maggie and Ruth! What an amazing week !
Everything goes so well for Jake, great news, I didn't hope already for GG, they ignored Bradley Cooper at all. Moreover drama....
Cotillard missing again. SV
How awesome! I really wasn't expecting it anymore... So happy!
Congratulations Jake, Maggie and Ruth!
When will the nominations for the Oscars be announced? ;) ;)
BlueJean,
December 15: Critic's Choice Nominations

Hi Sherlie! I think I've seen your name around the inter webs. I know you're a huge Jake fan. Welcome to GB and thanks for delurking.
This is all more than we expected but it is so overdue and deserved for Jake. Very exciting.
The Oscar nod may not come, but this is very exciting. I hope Jake is enjoying it all.
I hate toi close a post just after you posted for the first time. I'm going to copy your post in the comments of the next post.
