Los Angeles Nightcrawling
Nightcrawler hit L.A. this weekend, with a press junket during the day:
Looks like junket journalists don't have any qualms about asking for a photo or a selfie.
A screening Saturday night at the Pacific Design Center:
The junket continued on Sunday:
Not sure when the interviews will start to hit; we'll add them when they do. But here's one of those Trailer Addict pre-packaged videos:
Jake and Rene - a few different questions here:
Jake on E!
Ridiculous Extra:
French interview - this seems familiar and new at the same time:
Hitfix interview:
Getting Jake on your first junket - not bad:

Some reactions:
I am yet again in awe of the power & genius that is a #JakeGyllenhaal performance. #Nightcrawler is a one of a kind film. Brilliantly done.
Nightcrawler Movie is off puttingly awesome. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers an incredible performance. LA is beautiful.
Saw Jake Gyllanhaal do his best Patrick Bateman impression in a fiercely wicked film Nightcrawler.
Hot damn, NIGHTCRAWLER is as fantastic as you've heard. This one will stay with me for a while. Jake Gyllenhaal is so fucking on point.
Jake Gyllenhaal was excellent in #NightcrawlerMovie. Really liked the film, in my top five of 2014 for sure.
Jake Gyllenhaal is really, really , really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really good in #Nightcrawler.
Jake Gyllenhaal NAILED it in Nightcrawler. Definitely a must see.
From the last post - thanks, FP!
@RussFischer (Managing Editor, /Film)
NIGHTCRAWLER: Spectacular lead performance from an utterly mesmerizing Jake Gyllenhaal. Felt real skeevy taking such joy in his work.
I hope everyone is just out enjoying the weekend and not purposefully avoiding this post, lol!
Updated with a photo from today's junket interviews. Jake looks good, though the staging is unfortunate wrt the cup and Jake's stance :)
Forgot to include this description from the illustrator:
His current Nightcrawler look makes him look like Carry On Doctor era Jim Dale on crystal meth
I don't watch Dr. Who but it still made me laugh.
Lol UV I'm here
I just got in. It was a glorious sunny day, chilly but pretty. The leaves around here are in their full Fall glory, and it's really beautiful. Hard to stay indoors...especially when we know Winter is coming! LOL!
Between filming Demolition, getting ready for his Broadway debut, and promoting Nightcrawler Jake has to be exhausted, but these interviews are much appreciated. : )
Looks like he fell asleep in his chair maybe the interview er was boring:)
I've been super busy, family is in town!
Thanks for all the updates, I'm thrilled with all the positive buzz Jake has been getting for NC!!
He does look like he fell asleep Mary, Lol!
I didn't get a chance to comment on the previous post but since they were filming on Conet Island Naomi thought that Jake was one of the rides!
His current Nightcrawler look makes him look like Carry On Doctor era Jim Dale on crystal meth
I don't watch Dr. Who but it still made me laugh.
There was a programme in the 1960s called Carry On Doctors with Jim Dale. So not a Dr Who reference. :-)
Hi, I'm here. Nice post.

Hi! I'm always here, UV ;)

Just had Universals presentation. Wow. Unfortunately I'm under embargo. But Fast 7, Jurassic World, Ted 2 to name just a few. Big 2015.
Also saw the trailer for Everest staring Jake Gyllenhaal, looks really good.

@aaronkaj where did you see it??

@dreamwrit3r Australian Movie Convention. World premiere of the trailer. Should be out soon.
I really like the new poster!
I went over to Boxofficemojo to check their projections for Nightcrawler and the site is gone! It directs you to imdb.
I wonder what happened?
Shame, that was the best movie site.
"Also saw the trailer for Everest staring Jake Gyllenhaal, looks really good."
Everest??? Wow. That's early!
The BoxOfficeMojo website works for me, Sag Actor!

Hey it's back, that was weird. Thanks BlueJean!
Another new clip for NC
http://fansided.com/2014/10/13/nightcrawler-jake-gyllenhaal-disturbing-new-clip/. Greetings from Prague.
Thanks for checking in, everyone :) I know you're all out there. We just don't usually go that long with no replies to a new post.
LOL @ Jake falling asleep in the chair. Wouldn't be surprising given his pace of late. I wish someone would ask him if it's odd to be doing promo for one movie in the middle of making another.
Thanks for the Doctor Who correction anon. Clearly, I do not know my British TV shows.
Thanks for all the other posts and sightings. I wonder if Jake really did eat at La Gondola, which is a kosher Italian restaurant.
SAG Actor, Box Office Mojo went down last week with no warning or explanation and redirected to imdv for much of the weekend. Then it came back, then it went down again. But it was all very weird, and people are uneasy.
It would be a shame to lose all that data.
Here's an audio snippet from one of the roundtable interviews.
I can't remember where I saw this from the weekend:
Jake Gyllenhaal made eye contact with me and then smiled & gave me a head nod. *swoon*
So damn close. Just one hug. That's all I wanted.
Hope we get to see this:
At NIGHTCRAWLER Q&A, Jake Gyllenhaal got visibly choked up talking about dir. Dan Gilroy taking him to hospital after cutting his hand.
Cute:
I told Jake Gyllenhaal that @DCfilmgirl loved #Enemy! He says "You have a cool girlfriend!" Totally agree - @graedrake was a witness! :)
Jake Gyllenhaal's face when he found how much @DCfilmgirl loves #Enemy!
I forgot to say wow to the Everest trailer. Would love to see that soon.
Jake must be taping all the talk shows this week.

At Warner Lot for Ellen and Conan with Jake for Nightcrawler
Interesting. I think Jake did that the last time he was on Conan, too. And here's a great photo:
The guest tonight was Dax Shepard but we got surprised with a special guest who was recording their episode early... Jake Gyllenhaal... no big deal.
Happy to see he's doing Ellen again, as well.
This is nice, from this weekend:
i worked the premier for the movie nightcrawler and had the pleasure of meeting Jake gyllenhaal. Very nice guy and funny as hell. Best gift was meeting him lol HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!!
I was sitting across from the director just chatting with him before we escorted them back stage lol and i didnt even know who he was til he stepped on stage with Jake Gyllenhaal and announced that he was the director of the movie. They shot the movie 1 year ago and jake still recited his lines on stage that was fuckin dope. It was a pleasure meeting him like i said best bday gift!!
he is so nice. He was joking around & his eyes i was like daaammnn lol they were blue!!! My fav color too
A little clip from the weekend: Jake talking about Lou, the coyote.
Hmm all I see is a adorable cat in the photo. It's a shame that the press love for NC is not creating a lot of buzz that will translate into seats in the movie theater.
It's kind of depressing to see comments on twitter that the promo is lame for the film and realize it's true at least in my opinion. Jake does need a box office hit as a lead. Oh well.
I was kidding - it's a terrible photo.
I don't think the promotion is lame. It's just not as innovative as it seemed it might be. I'm crossing my fingers the movie will be a hit. It's not going to be a blockbuster, but I hope it does well.
Jake definitely needs a hit, but I don't know this this has to be it.
Forgot to post this earlier, from the Queen Latifah show:
Ladies and gentlemen... #JakeGyllenhaal has just walked onto our stage.... #heartshavestoppedbeating
And another Conan tweet:
if you hear someone laughing uncontrollably and repeating all the jokes to herself on conan tonight that's dorothy/also seeing jake gyllenhaal in person is a truly emotional experience
Seems to be another screening tonight in LA.
Finally, one of the weekend interviews. We're all going to be tired of that coyote reference soon :)
And another interview.
From twitter:
My mom won a car on the Ellen Show!! Lol jk. Jake Gyllenhaal showed up...
Jeff Wells went to one of the NC screenings this weekend:
Nightcrawler Uptick
It was clear after seeing Dan Gilroy‘s Nightcrawler (Open Road, 10.31) a few weeks ago that it’s a real American original — a thriller about sensation and speed and indifference to anything except for the rush and the pay and the next calamity…”if it bleeds, it leads.” It’s about Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a fiendishly focused video-shooting nut who peddles footage to a KTLA-like TV station and in particular a certain news producer (Rene Russo) whom he has…uhm, designs upon. A fiendishly smart guy who knows how to suck up to those who can give him what he wants and not the slightest hesitation about cutting off his competitors at the knees, Lou is all glare, exactitude and cold calculus. A kind of monster, for sure, which is why Nightcrawler might be a perfect Halloween movie after all. It’s certainly unlike any other “Halloween movie” that will be debuting on the 10.31 to 11.2 weekend.
He has a photo of Jake and the Gilroys and describes Jake as "zen" about the whole process (promotion, hype, I guess).
Does anyone know when the talk shows that Jake did will air?
Some (verified) celebrity twitter love for Jake:
Michelle Monaghan @realmonaghan

Great direction by Dan Gilroy!
Vinish video here.
Sorry, Mary - didn't mean to ignore your question. I think the Queen Latifah appearance will be the week before the movie opens. Can't remember the date. I assume the Conan spot will be that week, as well.
He's not listed on any of the East Coast shows yet, but their schedules for that week are not out yet.
Also, apologies to Jess if I missed your sarcasm with the cat comment :)
Thank you all for the updates!
Wow a trailer already for Everest? we should have started to talk about it earlier lol. Can't wait to see it!
As for Nightcrawler I think the promotion is being ok so far. I've seen Lou has twitter which is funny, I though they would do something else with his youtube account, tho. The only problem I see is all the comic-obsessed boys disappointed because this is not about X-Men.
Truly love reading all your comments, guys!
So much going on at the moment :)
Wow that is early for the Everest trailer, I've seen a ton of tv spots for NC over the weekend.
Can't wait for Jake to appear on Queen Latifa Show!
Too bad there is still no Hong Kong release date :(
LikeMonalisa
"Also, apologies to Jess if I missed our sarcasm with the cat comment"
No worries I thought it was supposed to be a picture of Jake. The cat was cute but I can't take owning another one. The first cat was hit by a car and the second the most beautiful white cat ever was stolen from our yard.
It was nice to see Michelle's tweet. I hope her movie does well this weekend.
I was going to comment that Rene loves hanging onto Jake's arm (can't blame her) and Jake always seems a bit uncomfortable or on guard?
Cute clip about pronunciation.
NASCAR driver interviewed:
Q: What's the last movie you saw – either at home or in the theater -- and was it any good?
A: It was Prisoners in the movie theater, and it was in the top three movies I've ever watched. It's Hugh Jackman, where his daughter got taken. I highly recommend that movie. It's some of the best acting I've ever seen. Jake Gyllenhaal was the cop, and that was the best acting. He was good.
I'm a huge Denzel (Washington) fan and I'd love to see The Equalizer. But, man, Prisoners -- gotta see that movie.
And this is something new - Jake on the ABC News:
ID @IDTweeps
Behind the scenes w/ #JakeGyllenhaal & @DavidMuir as they discuss #NIGHTCRAWLER for @WNTonight! @SeeNIGHTCRAWLER
I assume that will air closer to the release date.
I also saw a Career Fair that was giving out tickets to anyone who dropped their resume off! Not sure if that's promotion by NC or by the career fair.
Speaking of ID, not sure if people saw this photo:

@MaraBuxbaum That's my drawing! So glad you all liked it & thanks for being so nice. Jake was great to interview. =)
And this is probably not true, but it made me laugh:

That's a nice photo. Jake is almost smiling :)
From twitter:
I miss New York. It's the only place you can be wasted and see jake gyllenhaal riding the subway at 2am, sending you into a crazy mindfuck.
LOL.
Just uploaded an Access Hollywood interview. Some strangely worded questions. She asks Jake if he considers himself a bachelor. He nicely evades it. But it's a good interview - he talks about Renee and a little about Constellations.
SPOILER ALERT:
Jess, I think Renee does like touching Jake. Who can blame her. I saw an interview with her somewhere in which she was asked if they filmed anything in the bedroom with her character and Lou Bloom, and she was like "No! Ew!" LOL. I think f Jake had looked the way he looks now, she might have felt different.
(The reaction wasn't because of Jake's appearance, but because of Lou's creepiness.)
Apparently, the money people wanted some of those scenes. They aren't needed in the movie, but it would have been fun to see the deleted scenes.
In another interview, Dan Gilroy or maybe Renee mentioned that some of the studio types were nervous about Jake's appearance. Can't blame them for that.
I'm really loving all these interviews and tweets. Jake seems relaxed and I love seeing his smile. He does look a bit tired but mostly he looks great!
LikeMonaLisa, sorry, I missed your comment. I hope there will be a release date announced soon. I just saw on twitter that the movie's Russia release was delayed because they lost the distributor.
Jake added to PGA conference:
Jake Gyllenhaal has been added as a featured speaker at the Producers Guild of America's inaugural Produced by: New York, it was announced Tuesday. PGA President Emeritus Hawk Koch will moderate the one-on-one discussion. In addition to playing the lead role of Lou Bloom, Gyllenhaal is also a producer on Dan Gilroy‘s upcoming thriller, “Nightcrawler" ...
Produced By: New York will feature 12 full conference sessions, panel discussions, mentoring roundtables and networking opportunities designed to address key industry topics and discuss the evolving world of producing.
He looks tired in some photos. So nice to see that Michelle Monaghan and Busy Phillips were there.
Rene Russo looks so lovely.
Marvel’s Doctor Strange: Who’s in the Mix?
Jake Gyllenhaal
Sources say the actor is quite interested in playing a superhero after a string of dark, brooding films like "Prisoners" and "Nightcrawlers," both of which earned the actor rave reviews. Years ago, Gyllenhaal was close to replacing Tobey Maguire in “Spiderman 2” before Maguire came back to the role. It looks like he's still very intrigued with the comicbook realm.
Well with Jared campaigning for it and Matthew M's ego is so huge I believe it's between those 2 so somehow I don't think anyone needs to worry about Jake being Dr. Strange.
Although I could see Jake being a villain in a comic hero movie. If the sources are true and I Jake does want that type of role then I hope Jake gets his super hero franchise.
Back to this again. Still don't know what to hope for. Sounds like Jake would just be part of a bigger ensemble, so things wouldn't rise and fall on his character.
I just don't want this to join the litany of roles people list that Jake didn't get, some of which were never even possibilities to begin with.
Here's a pdf on the Produced By conference mentioned above.
From twitter:
"I love Jake Gyllenhaal."
met him once! ... came to work one day to do a meet & greet w/ our cancer kids .. super nice ...
and handsome .... looks just like he does in movies
It was great to see Jake with Michelle and Busy again.
Uploaded four more videos to the post. The Extra one is pretty bad; the other two are good.
Also, not sure if people have seen the clip of Renee Russo from Queen Latifah where she reveals that she is bipolar.
N'aww I love this picture. I had forgotten how much I liked Rene.
For whatever reason "Nightcrawler" is trailing "End of Watch":
"Nightcrawler" aired a new 30 second trailer which reveals a bit more about the plot of the film. This barely made an impression as it saw 1,099 tweets on the day of release. Facebook returns were even worse as it had less than a 1% bump in likes the day after release. It doesn't appear as though this is going to do much business upon release later this month as it simply isn't catching on with audiences so far. The comparison that comes to mind is End Of Watch that had roughly double of the traffic this had on both Facebook and Twitter the same distance before release (Boxoffice.com).
I don't quite understand why Universal waits one year to release "Everest" on a crowded weekend in September 2015. Next year Jake might present three movies at TIFF.
I'd be OK with Jake starring in Dr. Strange, but it would take a lot of time away from other (probably more worthy) projects.
"For whatever reason "Nightcrawler" is trailing "End of Watch":"
Uh the reason is pretty clear at least to me, Open Road can't determine a target audience with this movie and the title does not help. The title Nightcrawler could potentially mislead and turn off viewers who would like the movie into thinking its the comic book hero movie.
It should be a limited release to begin with instead of wide release as opening in over 2000 theaters the film will be looked at as a financial bomb.
Third Open Road should just stop buying Jake G movies. It's been a terrible promotional effort that started too late.
And a first time director although talented screen writer.
Sorry for the rant ,just really disappointed for Jake. This role should have been his defining moment in his adult career as a lead and it will be ignored doing Awards season and most importantly by audiences.
I'm trying to be a little more optimistic. But I agree that Open Road winning the bidding was a disappointment. We'll see what they can do.
I don't think that twitter tally is really on point. I thick it's hard to measure because of the Nightcrawler confusion. In the end, I don't think that will make a major difference to the box office. But I would like to know what made them decide to stick with the name.
Saw this on twitter:
17m17 minutes ago
FINALLY SAW JAKE GYLLENHAAL N HIS DOG OUTSIDE THE OFFICE
INSTANTLY BECAME PREGNANT
Manhattan, NY
Piruleta, that is a nice photo.
I asked the organizer of my film club if there were any plans for us to see Nightcrawler which was opening on Halloween, and she said she didn't like horror movies. So that was a little unsettling. I explained what the movie was about, etc. Hopefully that changed her perception.
If the sources are true and I Jake does want that type of role then I hope Jake gets his super hero franchise.
Unfortunately that's what Hollywood does more today.
He wants to be a success, I want that for him. But at the same time is scary.
I hope he will choose carefully. I think Patrick will help Jake to choose carefully.
I was reading that David Ayer will direct a film for Dc and he is already talking with four A-listers. I hope Jake stay away from David Ayer.
I was never happy with Open Road (Focus and Fox Search >>>>). I hope that word-of-mouth will be great.
Interview by Kris Tapley: Hitfix
"But I would like to know what made them decide to stick with the name."
Me too. I just watched the French interview you posted and the French title is 'Night call'. I like that! It isn't that different and yet it is ;)
I think too many people still think of the comics right now.
Good interview but they covered some familiar ground. Wish it had been a bit longer. Some of the answers are beyond babble. Bless Kris Tapley for saying "sort of" when Jake asked him if one if his answers made sense!
While we worry about the box office, let's not forget that these are some of the best notices of Jake's career:
My word of advice: Go watch #Nightcrawler when it hits theaters- jake gyllenhaal is fucking fantastic
#Nightcrawler is phenomenal. Jake Gyllenhaal is getting more and more impressive.
Just out of Nightcrawler. Jake Gyllenhaal is great and the movie around him is not too shabby either.
NIGHTCRAWLER - the new Jake Gyllenhall movie - best writing, directing and acting I've seen in a long time. And Rene Russo still got it.
It is frustrating that he keeps getting great reviews but doesn't get some of the great roles. But I'm grateful NC has turned out so well, even if it doesn't do well.
BJ, "Night Call" isn't a bad title. There must be a reason they stuck with it. I would be surprised if no one has asked, but I haven't seen the answer.
LOL:
Just saw #nightcrawler - I feel somewhat soiled but in a good way. Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing in it.
Well I'm going to try to generate some interest in getting people to see it in my area.
I'm now officially hosting a screening of Nightcrawler for my film club! Our film club has 500 members. Of course, not all of them are active at the same time. There's a hard core group of between 20 -35 people who attend most events.
But they publicize the events on their website and other film groups check in from time to time. People who won't be able to make the date will see it at another time, so they can discuss it.
"It is frustrating that he keeps getting great reviews but doesn't get some of the great roles."
Sometimes I wonder how it feels for Jake himself. At this point, I get the impression that his own gut feeling for a project or his own connection with a script or a character is (far) more important to him than how much money a film will make at the box office.
I get what you're saying UV, but to me, he doesn't have to do any superheroes and he doesn't have to become this enormously, incredibly famous actor.
As long as he's able to feel good about the work he's doing... He's someone who's always been very selective with his roles and I hope he'll continue to make risky choices. If that means he won't get cast for some roles in "bigger" movies, then so be it.
I think he's happy professionally right now - as he should be! ;)
I don't want Jake to be a superhero. I hate superhero movies. But if he wants to do one and he finds one he likes, then it will be fun to see him in some of these big group Events. But it won't be fun if he gets bogged down in it and doesn't do other stuff or if it tanks and he gets blamed/ignored because of it.
I want to see Jake working with the best directors, writers, actors, in prestige projects. I hate that he always has to work so hard to make some of this stuff happen. He should be getting better offers due to all of his plaudits.
Jake Gyllenhaal gives career-best perf in @seeNIGHTCRAWLER. Like Norman Bates or Mark Zuckerberg, he makes you instantly uncomfortable.
Nightcrawler is definitely something now. Heavy-handed at times but Gyllenhaal certainly holds his own for 120 minutes which ain't easy.
Saw Nightcrawler earlier on at the Lighthouse. Such an amazing film. Definitely an Oscar coming for Jake Gyllenhaal.
I think I fixed the autostart on the E! video. I know that can be annoying.
IV, autostart is still on. : /
Jake seems to set a high value on creative control and independence, and he seems attracted to projects that have that supportive environment.
I agree about the prestige films, writers, directors, etc. but I believe that will come soon.
I look at Bradley Cooper and some others who were in their mid to late30s before theyreally came into their own. I'm very hopeful.
Are you sure, bobbyanna? It isn't starting automatically for me. Maybe if you refresh your browser?
Are other people having the same issue?
Interesting article, an odd mix of recycled bits and new questions. A few:
In real life are you as controlling as the character you play? Do you put people in a box?
Like a literal box? Only my dog has to go into a crate. When I love and care for someone, I want them to be whoever they want to be.
With people in my life, in my relationships, I don’t think you can control anyone.
Lou Bloom (the character he plays) has control over people because he knows things about them that he can use against them. I don’t have that. That would make me sick to my stomach. I look for honesty, loyalty, understanding and patience.
Talk about your weight loss (he dropped 10kg for the role). What food did you miss the most, and what was the first thing you ate after shooting the movie?
For me, it was really about feeling the sensation of not satiating myself, not feeling like if I wanted something, I could get it, which made me want something more.
And that mentality sparked a lot of feelings and emotions inside me; it influenced every single scene I was in, every interaction I had with every character.
We shot mostly at night, so I wasn’t getting a lot of sleep, and I wasn’t eating a lot.
I was with a friend – it was on a weekend – I was in my car driving past Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffle, and I remember saying, “Hey, I would love that”. So, my friend sent me Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles on the last day of shooting.
Nice pic.
"I hate that he always has to work so hard to make some of this stuff happen. He should be getting better offers due to all of his plaudits."
Yes, I agree with that.
Autostart for me too! ;)
Back later!
Now Piruleta, I'm curious to know what exactly it was in Jake (or Detective Loki) that made you interested in Jake's career.
You're not the only one who's late to the party (lol). It was 'Brokeback Mountain' for me, two years ago. Since then, I feel I've had a Jake crash course - I've seen everything he's been in by now.
Must say I still don't know what to think of 'Everest' for some reason. I'm afraid that could be a bomb.
Preview of a Jake profile in EW:
And—as detailed in a profile of him appearing in this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly—Gyllenhaal would run 15 miles nightly from his Hollywood Hills home to the Nightcrawler set, en route to some of the best reviews of his career.
“The running thing, you’re pretty hungry because you’re not eating a lot of food,” Gyllenhaal says. “You’re lonely because you’re not meeting your friends for dinner. People go, ‘Hey you want to meet for dinner after work?’ I go, ‘Well, I’m shooting all night.’ ‘Alright, you want to meet for lunch?’ I’m like, ‘I can’t!’ So I’m gonna go run.” ...
For his part, Gyllenhaal veered away from mainstream movie stardom somewhere around 2010, after the critical and box-office failure of his big-budget 3-D video-game adaptation Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. In that film’s wake, he began delivering intensely specific, idiosyncratic performances in a string of indie films, including 2012’s cop procedural End of Watch and last year’s mind-bending dual-character study Enemy.
“Sometimes people ask me, ‘Oh, you’re making these smaller movies now.’ No, I just want to go at character a different way,” Gyllenhaal says. “Not in an annoying way. You can really live and love and make the audience have fun watching.”
He adds: “I look at past work I’ve done and go, ‘I wish I could redo that again. Tear it up and sew it up.”
Video discussing the weight loss. It's in French, but it has some nice video of Jake at the Berlin Film Festival and other places.
Not sure if this is the same TV spot posted above.
From twitter:
In NYC and saw Jake Gyllenhaal taking a stroll in his joggers. Proper dude. Might have to revise my opinion about wearing joggers outside.
As much as I don't like PoP (and I really don't like it!), it's starting to get annoying to read over and over again that that's the turning point in Jake's career. It may be true, but I love him in some earlier roles as well.
“I look at past work I’ve done and go, ‘I wish I could redo that again. Tear it up and sew it up.”
Why 'redo' his past work? He shouldn't ignore it - he's got nothing to be ashamed of.
Now Piruleta, I'm curious to know what exactly it was in Jake (or Detective Loki) that made you interested in Jake's career
Haha, well I think I mentioned this before but for some reason I didn't want to see prisoners at first, but the good reviews and mostly the disappointed of a lot of people because Jake was not nominated, finally made me watch it. I'm glad I did because I was totally blown away by the film and especially by Jake's performance. His construction of the character was so detailed and complex… the way he walks, the way he moves, his mannerisms, the famous blinking. It was the first time in a long while that I forgot I was watching an actor playing a part, I believed what he was doing. I don't know if I'm making sense lol. But, yeah, after that I watched other films and I think he is really talented, for me one of the best of his generation and I'm actually surprised he is not a bigger star.
You are making sense! :)
"I'm actually surprised he is not a bigger star."
Mmm yeah - I get that. Before seeing him in Brokeback, I had heard of him but his name wasn't really familiar to me. I had to Google him to find out what he had done before. And I thought: why isn't he more famous? He's talented, he's young and handsome, why isn't he a teen idol? *joking*
But I quickly realized that it probably has to do with his career path so far - risky choices mostly, no real blockbuster movies... and possibly his private personality. It just doesn't seem like he's trying to be this huge star. Maybe he doesn't even want that.
Piruleta, we're glad you discovered Jake. Happy if GB can help you catch up :)
BJ, the PoP thing is way overplayed. He gets too much flak for it. It was an anomaly, not a pattern. It is sometimes lumped together with L&OD, but that movie had a respected director and tried, unsuccessfully, to be more than just a rom-com.
It's a shame you don't like PoP. I saw a little bit of it again the other night and thoroughly enjoyed dashing Jake in a big epic, even if it wasn't a great movie. And as I've said many times, it makes me sad to think Jake might not be chosen for a big, sweeping movie like that again. (I do not count anything Marvel in that category.)
Some nice stuff in the EW piece. Stephanie has the article uploaded on IHJ. Some tidbits:
I don't think there's a person on the planet who could challenge or push Jake more than he pushes himself," says NC director Dan Gilroy. "He's committed on every level and he has a deeply creative, artistic mind." ...
For next year's fact-based disaster film Everest, he simulated altitude sickness in a hypobaric chamber and climbed Italy's Dolomite mountain range. And for the upcoming boxing film Southpaw, he packed on 25 pounds of muscle by working out two times a day for six months. "I watched him vomit in the gym and almost pass out," says director Antoine Fuqua. "I watched him take gut shots to the ribs, get dropped. You can't ask for more than what he did. And it's not because of some Hollywood reason. Jake gives you his heart."
Jake also has a quote about caring less about how the audience will react and more about what it means to him. And there's a Darko Meter assessing the darkness level of Jake's films. Jarhead is inexplicably omitted, BBM is at the top of the meter for darkness. (Personally, I think NC belongs in that spot.)
The graphic acknowledges that Jake has a history of seeing out dark roles, at least.
There's also a great description of an upcoming Demolition scene, but it's too long to type out.

Gyllenhaal is a creepy, amoral and bleakly funny rain man in #NightcrawlerMovie - probably make my top ten list at end of the year.
Agog at Nightcrawler's brutal, bleak brilliance. Gyllenhaal amazing as a twisted, unsettling, gaunt, creepy sociopath. Still would though.
#NightcrawlerMovie is blinding! #JakeGyllenhaal is phenomenally disturbing #stillhot

I agree, UV. It just infuriates me when they hang a failure card around Jake's neck for PoP. I've exhausted myself ranting about it in the past.
But EW got it wrong. PoP was not in 3D. It's not a minor point. PoP was released during the "Avatar" 3D craze. Suddenly 3D was very popular again. And PoP wasn't in 3D. Bruckheimer said he didn't want to spend the extra money to convert it to 3D, (which he quoted as an extra $6Million) The distributors didn't even bother to reserve IMAX for it.
PoP had a great cast. I'd look further up the food chain to measure the shortcomings.
I'm just mystified that a film that grossed $335 Million is regarded as a failure. It grossed $93 million domestically, but recently, Hollywood's been including foreign BO to measure a film's success. Something they weren't doing when PoP was released.
I don't know of any actor that is so defined by his perceived failure the way Jake is for PoP. Some people are made of Teflon. Green Lantern, anyone?
I don't consider PoP a failure. As for LAOD, it sure has had a lasting effect no matter how flawed it is. LOL!
BlueJean, in my case I knew who he was, I knew he was the guy from Donnie Darko, he was the guy from Brokeback Mountain, and I had seen The Day After Tomorrow and Prince of Persia, curiously his two blockbusters, but I never paid attention to him.
And now that you are talking about PoP, I remember thinking it lacked something when I watched it, but still I liked Dastan as a character, I though he was loveable? not sure if that's the right word lol! but I wanted to know what was going to happen to him. I definitely think it was not Jake's fault the movie didn't work.
UltraViolet thank you! you run a great blog!
^^^^
I agree with the above! :)))
I'm not ashamed to admit I use GB on an (almost) daily basis to stay updated.
I post on the Brokeback Mountain forum too, that's also a special place - but most people there have moved on from Jake. And sometimes I just HAVE to talk about him... so I come here!
On PoP: the movie looks great! Epic! Jake's tries really hard as Dastan, Gemma A. is a beautiful princess. I love their banter.
But... the movie doesn't do 'it' for me. I get bored whenever I watch it, believe it or not ;)
It must be me.
"Jake also has a quote about caring less about how the audience will react and more about what it means to him."
I've read that too. It kinda makes sense to me. I don't think you can ever anticipate how the 'public' will react.
I'm not a marketing expert, by any stretch, but one thing I notice is that the TV ads and the online promotion for Jake's movies seem to stop as soon as they're released. Depending on the competition for opening weekend, I wish they would run the ads online and on TV for another week or so, because I do think it helps generate interest.

great news: 'Wild' Director Sets Next Film at Fox Searchlight (Exclusive)
Look: clean-shaven Jake! Wow. We'll see how long this lasts. Must be shooting Demolition scenes pre-breakdown? I could have that totally wrong, as I haven't read the script. But I don't think filming is done.
And yay for Focus Searchlight and not Closed Marketing Road.
Just got a linked in request from #Nightcrawler's Lou Bloom. Scared
Whoops - on the above. I saw that tweet and thought it was funny. Lou has not asked to connect with me yet, sadly!
Bobbyanna, I noticed the 3D mistake, as well. I meant to go back to see if it was fixed.
Most movies stop advertising after opening weekend, unless it's a big hit or a big star :(
Thanks for the nice words, Piruleta and BJ. Apologies in advance for the days we don't have many updates :)
There's another Nightcrawler event tonight:
@JoeyMagidson
Senior Staff Writer for The Awards Circuit, Oscar Pundit at First Showing, and Freelance Film Critic
En route to the Jake Gyllenhaal/Nightcrawler event. Should be nice.

Sweet to have Jake Gyllenhaal perform a poem from my new book, Our Poison Horse called YOU WILL BE DESTROYED IN YOUR OWN WAY at the words of war veterans benefit.
More from Alicia Malone's FB page:
While cameras were being set up and I was rambling with nerves, I told future husband Jake Gyllenhaal all about PROFILES. He was so interested, he asked how to find it so he could listen! He loves COPPOLA. We have so much in common! Hahaha - Alicia x
Throwback photo.
Hi, long-time lurker here. Does anybody know if there is going to be any promotion for this movie in the UK? Apparently the European premiere happened in Zurich last month (only Rene Russo attended), and Jake has already been interviewed by the British (as well as other international) press during the press junket in LA. Most grateful for any clues, thanks!
UltraViolet, Tks a lot for yr kindly reply, hope there'll be a release date for HK later.

Jake will be on Good Morning America on October 24th! @GMA #JakeGyllenhaal
Screening in NY: IHJ
Hi, Laura. I don't know, with Jake filming Demolition and soon the play, I don't see a promo in London.
Thanks for the info UV on GMA I'll mark my calendar
That was Monica, Mary :) But I was just about to post it. Hopefully we'll learn the other talk shows scheduled this week.
Fingers crossed, LikeMonaLisa!
Laura, as Monica said, it's hard to see when Jake would be able to get to England. On the other hand, he usually squeezes British promotion in, so who knows.
New post.
