While many were critical of Jake's look for the evening, he was chosen as one of the Best Beards. And the LA Times was happy to see Jake and Maggie:

Yaaay! These are great pictures, UV! I can really appreciate his dinner jacket, too, even if I'm not a fan of the black shirt white jacket look. It's a perfect fit. He looks very trim.
If I can make a "photo assumption" based on this 'evidence', it looks like Jake was pressed into service at the last minute to escort Maggie.
Looks like they had a great time. The Standard's after party seemed like the place to be.

That's what I was thinking because Jake did not do the red carpet last year. But I don't think it was last minute but more of little brother you better do it exes or no exes.
I really don't see Jake being that concerned with his "exes." That seems like a media gimmick from US Weekly to add some imaginary drama to the evening.
Reese was there with her husband, Taylor was preoccupied with her friends, taking pictures, etc. and Kristen Dunst seems very settled with Garrett Hedland.
It looked like a festive occasion where most people were hanging out with friends and just having a good time.
I think I actually saw Marcus Mumford in the background talking to Jake in a photo of Frank Ocean in one of the after party photos.

Indiewire is showcasing Time To Dance, because the director's first movie will be debuting at Cannes.
Would be nice to see Jake in Cannes again one of these years.

I also think it was last minute. And I agree that U.S. Weekly is trying to add drama. As I said earlier, it's not the first time that Jake is in the same party whit his exes, so why would he care now?
He seemed to be having a great time. I love the photo with Erika Badu.
I don't know that all three have ever been at the same party as Jake. It's an easy story. I thought of it when I saw all the attendees.

Well, I was remembering the vanity fair party, reese and Swift were there. And Dunst was at the Met Ball last year, as well as the drama princess.
My point is that it's not the first time he was in the same place as them.

It could mean he'll keep this look for the addiction & despair scenes,
then shave it for the scenes where Billy starts putting his life back together gaining his daughter's respect, and for the boxing scenes. Professional boxers don't sport beards during the official fights.
Forgot to add, I'm excited for Southpaw. Can't say I've watched many boxing movies but the ones I saw were great. If done well, boxing movies are great metaphors for life's struggles and the underdogs: first Rocky, Raging Bull, The Fighter. No coincidence these movies won Oscars. Same with The Wrestler (not boxing but close).
This makes the story sound even better for he will have a complex character arch to play: former hero > grief stricken addict > redeemed father > champion who finds his way back.
