LOL, that would be an interesting question in an interview.
New trailer for "Enemy": Yahoo Movies
Hagen said... I'm very pleased with the trailer. :-)
"Enemy" has been shown tonight as a suprise movie at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands. There are many pretty positive Dutch comments on "Enemy" on Twitter (#IFFR).
Hagen said… Variety: Baltasar Kormakur Chats About ‘Everest,’ ‘Vikings’ and ‘On The Job’
Right now you’re doing “Everest”? How is it going?
It’s fantastic. I was coming from Kathmandu all the way to the Everest, we walked with the actors. It was a really hard but beautiful shoot. I remember thinking how lucky I was, getting paid to be there. It was wonderful. The cast is blown away by it. Now I’m in Italy. We’re starting to shooting here the day after tomorrow.
How is it working with such as great cast, including Jake Gyllenhall, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, Emily Watson? I hear a lot that American actors are exceptionally committed?
I think good actors are good wherever they’re from. Maybe there’s more commitment on this higher level, because there’s so much risk. I think we have great actors in Europe. I’ve never seen that kind of commitment there, though, that artistic, mental, and physical commitment. On the other hand, American actors can be prima donnas and difficult to deal with. Which I understand, when you’re on a high level. And we all want is a life as good as possible, a house as good as we can afford, a car as good as we can afford. Then it becomes about the trailer and the hotel you live in. You don’t want to live a shitty life. I understand it. I don’t always agree with it. But I see where it comes from.
But on “Everest” were you’re working under such extreme conditions your cast members can’t really be prima donnas?
Yeah, we can’t afford that, we stayed on shitty hotels in the mountains with one electric blanket. The actors had to do everything like they were in film school again. Yesterday I walked from 9 am to 3am just to scout, because we couldn’t get helicopters. It’s not too far away from “The Deep,” but bigger, shooting in more countries, it’s kind of the same mentality, where I was swimming in the ocean for a month to make that film. And it’ll be realistic as possible. Of course, i’d love to shoot at the Summit of “Everest,” but then I might come back without half of my cast. So we’re also shooting in a studio. We do as we can, we have to use film technique. It’s like using hair extensions instead of a wig. In hair extensions some is real.
Realist said... Wow just watch the new trailer on Yahoo, thanks Hagen.
Its awesome, Jake is hot as hell. Loved how they used one of his photos from an old photo shoot for his character's actor resume.
The motorcycle scenes are just as sexy as hell. I know one was probably a double but still hot.
I was going to say before that I wish Denis would start using Jake in all his films if only for a crowd shot, Denis' muse Jake Gyllenhaal.
Blogger UltraViolet said... Realist, it's definitely Jake in some shots on the motorcycle :)
I LOVE the trailer!!!! But honestly? Who in their right mind would design a poster for a Jake Gyllenhaal movie and you can't see his face? LOL! I liked the other poster with all the Jakes. : )
There are three good Enemy posters, but it is a shame not to see Jake's face on the last one.
I'm hoping this is good movie news. Amy Adams is certainly on a roll. I haven't seen PSH's directorial debut, but both he and AA are critics' darlings. And the Black List has done well by Jake. Not necessarily commercially, but Rendition, Source Code and Prisoners are all good movies.
At this point, I wonder if Jake is still making Everest. Will he ever join the rest of the cast and crew?
Finally we know why Jake travelled to Los Angeles. "Ezekiel Moss" sounds like a very promising project.
At this point, I wonder if Jake is still making Everest. Will he ever join the rest of the cast and crew?
Well, they haven't started filming in Italy yet. And Universal Pictures confirmed that Jake is a part of the cast just the day before yesterday. There must be some good reason that he has accepted that role besides money and having outdoor fun. ;-)
Quite long and positve review of "Enemy" by a German movie platform (FILMSTARTS, 4 out of 5 stars).
What wonderful news about Jake and Amy Adams. Glad he'll have a chance to work with PSH, too. I haven't seen PHS's other directorial effort, but I understand it was a NYC-centric, romantic comedy. It was described as sweet. This one sounds more sinister. I like that.
I saw some stills from the Mississippi Grind shoot the other day, and remembered that Jake would be filming that now instead of getting ready to climb Mt. Everest in Italy. : ) LOL!
UV, thanks so much for the stills from the set of Enemy. Yes, indeed. Jake drove that motor cycle a good part of the time.
New post, new trailer for Enemy, new movie for Jake. I love it. The trailer looks so good, mysterious, menacing and plot driven at the same time. From what I read, Enemy is very unconventional, doesn't follow a straight plot line, so this is more like a teaser, viewers have no idea what's really coming!
Love the idea of Jake teaming up with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Playing the titular character no less. The names attached to it will bring lots of attention and hopefully critical love.
Ultraviolet, he's definitely doing Everest, though your question may be rethorical ;-) the answer is in the interview posted by Hagen: "January 31, 2014 Kormakur is currently shooting "Everest" with Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and Emily Watson" ( that's new! ) "Baltasar Kormakur is attending Goteborg fest to receive the inaugural Nordic Honorary Dragon Award and give a masterclass...... Now I’m in Italy. We’re starting to shooting here the day after tomorrow."
I'm thinking the day after tomorrow means Feb 1st or 2nd. Could explain why there were no tweets about a big movie crew in Val Senales, not one selfie with Brolin (who seems heavily involved, it's his first movie after rehab, clean slate, big role). Last week they were gathering in Italy one by one. Jake was a little late cause he had a movie contract to sign. I'm just sorry he and his team missed the chance to film in Nepal.
Hagen, you're right Fischer's story on the summit day isn't as eventful. Beck Weathers survived miraculously, Rob Hall made that emotional call to his wife. All because they were physically able and their minds were functioning properly. Though Krakauer wrote that the competition between the 2 guiding companies may have led to Hall's decision not to turn back to Base Camp with Hansen despite the danger. As a guide, he may have caused both their deaths. Fischer, an experienced, strong guide who ascended Everest a few times before, had the bad luck of getting sick on summit day. During the blizzard he assumingly developed a debilitating, fatal combination of HACE and HAPE. He never had the chance to say goodbye to his wife and 2 kids.
I'm not making things up, everything is supported by what I read. I saved the links, will share them with you, but I'm trying to figure out how to make them clickable.
FP, totally agree with you on Spock the Vulcan being the heart of Star Trek. Both Leonard Nimoy and Zack Quinto are smarter, better actors than the Captains.
I have to say Enemy's trailer , took my breath away, I've never seen Jake so intense, more time passes, the more it is impossible to ignore his spectacular talent his charisma and his staggering stage presence! Plus He's hot as hell! LOL ;)
I knew the LA trip was business related, I wonder what else if anything is coming up for Jake. So far his new management seems to be a good match for him. And to his credit Jake is mixing it up a bit, a big studio film, then an independent film:
Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Everest and eventually either EM or Southpaw or both. I hope Southpaw is still a go, another different character for Jake we haven't seen, a single father and a boxer.
Those movies should keep him busy a few months but maybe a break to do on Broadway.
Welcome, Sonja! Thanks for delurking, even for a bit :)
Enemy was just shown in Rotterdam; it was a surprise screening at the International Film Festival, as Hagen mentioned above. It got a good reception, as far as my google-translated Dutch can tell!
Enemy is the most confusing movie I saw since Home Alone 2. Jake Gyllenhaal plays it sublime.
Surprisingly this was certainly a surprise. 'm Still thinking the end:
Jealous of visitors surprise film Enemy # IFFR's film I most look forward to coming months.
Enemy (2013) Jake Gyllenhaal 2 for the price of 1 in Villeneuve's exciting paranoia thriller, beautiful soundtrack
What's better than a movie with Jake Gyllenhaal? A film with double Jake Gyllenhaal. Suprise Film Enemy, served with whipped Lynch # IFFR
Not sure what "whipped Lynch" is really supposed to say: geserveerd met een toefje Lynch
This guy edited the Enemy trailer, and he's thrilled with all the kudos. He did a good job on the trailer, building tension without spoiling too much. There's too much of one scene that I wish they'd kept out, because I found it quite jarring in the movie. But it's a hdd movie to encapsulate, and I think the trailer does a good job making you want to know more.
I'm not making things up, everything is supported by what I read. I saved the links, will share them with you, but I'm trying to figure out how to make them clickable.
Jake's fan, maybe we both should be a bit more careful with spoilers. xD Though I'm afraid it's a bit late for that. Anyway, I agree that Fischer's success was quite a strong motive for Hall's actions on Mount Everest.
WTF - in Rotterdam???? I should have known! :(
No need to worry. There's a Dutch distributor for "Enemy": Filmfreak Distributie No idea, if they have already set a release date.
How horrible. I'm completely stunned. Terrible terrible news. He was such a gifted actor. Poor guy. He's been struggling for a while, as SAG actor said. So sad for his family.
Scott Feinberg @ScottFeinberg At this time 8 years ago we were all focused on a best actor Oscar race between Philip Seymour Hoffman and Heath Ledger. Now both are gone.
Life does go on, a little ponytail. I understand why the movie will not be sold in Berlin and it may seem a bit disrespectful but I am anxious for Jake's next choice. I think EM will be delayed for a quite awhile.
ScriptShadow's review of "Nightcrawler" is now available: Lou is also… strange. You aren’t going to find an easy way to describe him but if pressed I’d say he’s an ambitious sleazy sociopathic hustler with a tinge of autism.
Wow, I hope Script Shadow's opinion is shared by critics and fans who actually see the movie. Thanks for linking to this review.
The director's vision, and the pacing for Nightcrawlers will be really critical. It has to pop. A while ago I said Jake's character in Nightcrawler is different from anything I've ever seen him in.
This is a very accurate description of the character, Lou, and I am really impatient to see the results. I'm sure Jake will nail it. I also think he'll be scary good. : ) Like a psychopath. LOL!
Everyone is joining Everest but Jake. LOL, but I guess none of Scott's team has been cast or begun shooting?
There are some actors and actresses who have been cast for roles in Scott Fischer's team: Mountain guides Neal Beidleman and Anatoli Boukreev as well as the clients Sandy Hill Pittman, Klev Schoening and Lene Gammelgaard.
Tom Goodmann-Hill (Neal Beidleman) is in South Tyrol since January 26. He tweeted a picture on February 1. (Beidleman was in a group with some memebers of Rob Hall's expedition on that crucial day in May 1996.)
According to an Italian website the shooting of "Everest" in South Tyrol started in the last week of January and will last about three weeks. (I hope Jake won't have to climb exclusively in the Green Room.) The Garuda Hotel, Kathmandu, has been 'reconstructed' in South Tyrol.
Rhombus Media @rhombusmedia The score for ENEMY, composed by Saunder Jurriaans & Danny Bensi, is now on iTunes! http://bit.ly/1boc2GQ @eOnefilms @A24Films @Pathe
Swear to God I'm not trying to be confrontational, but how do we know that Jake isn't in Italy now? Personally, I haven't seen a legit US tweet or photo since Sunday. No photo or tweets about Brolin or Clarke being in Italy either. Does that mean they aren't there? The only one we know for sure is Tom Goodmann-Hill. For all I know, Jake could be in South Tyrol as we speak. Until proven otherwise. More puzzling is that Universal is still casting Everest. And the lack of italian news press or tweets about this big american film crew. I've seen more reports from Nepal. Do italians not recognize them due to the layers of clothes, beards and hats?
Very much enjoyed the script review, on point observations about Lou Bloom. Makes me more and more excited. But is it just me or the intro about Jake was highly inaccurate? He doesn't seem to know that Jake already has an Oscar nom (and GG, SAG), a BAFTA win. Or that Jake is an A lister since Brokeback Mountain. Or that the "panned" PoP opened with more than $20 mil ($37.8 mil for the 4-day weekend, total gross $335 mil). If being an A lister means exclusively headlining billion $ blockbusters, than Ryan Gosling is not on the A list: he's done non of this, zero, nada. Or what about Channing Tatum headlining huge White House Down for a poor $20 mil opening weekend?
On a sad note, I remember that photo Utraviolet. Seems unreal that 2 of them are now dead because of drug overdose. Why do people do that to themselves and their families?

Personally, I hope we'll see Jake heading for "Everest" real soon, so he can shoot his scenes, finish up, and get a hair cut. Maybe at least trim the beard? ( sigh.)
It is odd that Jake hans't been part of filming so far, especially if they are filming only three weeks in Italy, and almost two have passed.
As far as the script reviewer, he does get many facts wrong. It's especially annoying that people think Jake made a string of bad movies in an attempt to be a Movie Star. I really think PoP is the only movie that can be painted with that brush.
OTOH, Jake isn't A-list like Clooney or Damon. It's sad but true.
Speaking of Joaquin Phoenix, I saw Her this weekend and really liked it. What a dream it would be for Jake to be in a movie like that. It was basically two hours of JP in every scene, and it was well written and funny and touching. Perfect? No. But very good.
If Gosling or Gordon Levit who are not exactly weapons of war at the box offfice, are A lister then so is Jake, who this year did better than the two of them put together, and in any case all these talented actors, are much more A -lister than it was Clooney of their own age.and we can argue that Clooney is not an A lister like Daniel Day Lewis no matter how he try, and he tries hard, but Jake may be as DDL, because he has the talent, it's all a matter of perspective I guess The script review article is sloppy and inaccurate, if you write about these things and you want to be credible get your facts straight
True, he's not A-list Premium but he's in the A league and steadily building a strong resume. End of Watch, Enemy, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Everest, (could have been)Ezekiel Moss, (could be)Southpaw. Undeniably mature choices, nothing shallow. If he keeps making them, in a few years they won't be able to ignore or belittle him anymore.
As for Ezekiel Moss, I believe the producers will try to find another director, maybe a PSH collaborator, and make the movie as a tribute to him. Hollywood folks have the uncanny ability to mourn their artists and make money in the process.
Ultraviolet, Tom Goodmann-Hill said 6 weeks in his tweet. We have few reports and conflicting dates. I think it's gonna be a long shoot, too bad Jake is missing some parts of it.
Realist, I was just thinking: next girlfriend! But there's plenty of fish in the see in Italy. And a glacier to be scaled. Two birds with one stone :-D
This tweeter talked about preparing to interview Jake, but he doesn't say when. So I don't know if Jake is going to do some Enemy press and then go to film or what.
Monica, I know actors come into filming at different points. But it seems Jake is missing the actual mountain filming. It seems odd. But since we don't know the exact schedule, it could be meaningless.
Jake's Fan and FP, I'd love it if Jake had the clout in Hollywood that Gosling or (or maybe even JGL) seemingly has. It isn't fair, based on performances or box office. But it is, sadly, true. And it's not only that blogger who thinks that way.
Jake has done well for himself recently. Let's hope the trajectory continues.
I'd love it if Jake had the clout in Hollywood that Gosling or (or maybe even JGL) seemingly has. It isn't fair, based on performances or box office. But it is,
UV It isn't fair, based on the artistic performances to me.
what Jake has done in the past two years is impressive, from the Play to the EOW (which beat Clint E and Jennifer L at the box office thanks to the star power of Michael Pena of course, according to the script review blogger passing through the video of "the shoes" to the superb performance of Prisoners, if Jake takes this step, it will be hard to continue to ignore it. This year has been hard to ignore Jake, even for those pretentious snobs of Indiewire, the next in the list is Nikkie lol!
Jake can still be an A-list, but unfortunately he is not on the top. He's getting roles, but you do not see his name attached to major studio projects. Aside from Into The Woods, and yet, in a small role I think the author is trying to say is that Nightcrawler can change things for him. The role may cause the studios and great directors to see jake with other eyes. And so he can have his name in big projects.
Monica no matter what the blogger wants to say, is the wrong starting point, his article is inaccurate and based on false information just to prove his point.
Nowadays it is no longer or just the big multimillion-dollar project of the Studios, to determine your status, but the performance and the artistic value of the film, even small budget indie, look at Matthew McConaughey, a couple of years ago it was finished and is now going to win the Oscar for best Actor, ditto for Jared Leto, who could imagine that a small film like Dallas Buyers Club would beat all the big names
Yes, FP. But see, Mathew is the star of the upcoming film from Christopher Nolan. One of the most anticipated movies this year, with a big budget. He's just making small films to receive respect as an actor, won an Oscar and put him in big budget movies again, but not in stupid rom-cons, to put him in movies with great potential, with great directors, as does Leo DiCaprio. Is not only acting in small films, but also act in great movies that put you on the top. The things the author said is right, however painful it may be. Jake has the talent, but hollywood wants more than that.
I do not agree Monica, MM is in the new big Nolan's film because of Mud another little indie movie that relaunched his career, where he has shone so much that it was impossible to ignore it, do you remember what was the career and status of Robert DJ before Ironman? I came to the conclusion that the only thing that really matters is the talent.
But if the comparison is DiCaprio then they're all going to be B lister, big time
I agree Realist the valor and courage Jake That Has shown in recent years, is completely excluded from the pedigree of the filmmakers or studios with-whom he worked, Has proven to be an artist and That there is no need for fancy names to shine. Honestly Bradley Cooper would be at the Oscars without O. Russell? Jake could be, he Could be nominated even with the little gritty EOW as His performance was so powerful, he Could be a candidate again this year, with the almost unknown but very talented Villneuve, without the need to lose weight 20 pounds or dress up as a woman, (said with all due respect and admiration for good and talented actors like Jered Leto and MM) only with the strength of His interpretation.
On twitter when I see that finally people are beginning to appreciate and respect him for his talent and not only for his physical appearance, I know you're going in the right direction.
Tom Goodmann-Hill said 6 weeks in his tweet. We have few reports and conflicting dates.
After filming in South Tyrol the "Everst" crew will move on to the Cinecittà Studios in Rome. So Goodmann-Hill will be away from home for six weeks altogether.
Universal Studios Entertainment: EVEREST: Director Baltasar Kormákur with Director of Photography Salvatore Totino on location in Nepal. Filming continues in the Italian Dolomites before moving to Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the UK. Starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Still forth fiddle. Oh well.
The Italian article above mentions that they use stunt doubles in the Dolomites. So maybe they are currently filming Jake's double climbing up a mountain. Nevertheless it's a bit odd that Jake will shoot a movie about two Mount Everest expeditions and won't see any mountains at all.
Germain Lussier (writer and critic for Slashfilm.com) @GermainLussier Enemy is atmospheric, captivating and a total mystery. I kind of really loved it, but I want to talk about it for hours over beers.
The death of PSH has shocked me since I first heard about it. He was one of my favorite actors. Amy Adams co-starred with him in Doubt and Charlies War. I'm sure the studio will wait an appropiate time before addressing E.Moss
I do find it weird that Jake hasn't joined the cast of Everest yet.
I must say I agree with both sides: on one hand, I'd love to see Jake in a really big, big movie - but on the other hand: he's so fascinating in his darker, moody roles.
He still has that indie label, hasn't he? I'd hate for him to lose that.
I don't want Jake to be in a big movie just for the sake of it. I want him to be in a big, successful movie so he can continue to make lots of movies, of all kinds. Big, small, dark, light, comedies, dramas, thrillers, romances. Bring it all on.
I want to see Jake's name attached to great directors, as well.
A big, successful, but above all credible movie. Didn't like PoP much. Jake tried hard as Prince Dastan, but the movie was just too much. The characters got lost in all the special effects.
I really liked Pop, BlueJean. But I know many people did not. And for many other reasons, it is perceived as a bigger failure than it actually was. It's great that Jake is finally putting it behind him.
Tweet about last night:
@rachel_comey thank you for a delicious dinner, beautiful fashion and super fun company #wsjfashion #nyfw #jakegyllenhaal
For today:
Heading to SoHo to interview Jake Gyllenhaal. Anything you want to know?
Here's my historic interview with him. Very nice guy. http://www.maxim.com/movies/icon-jake-gyllenhaal …
I don't really remember this interview, the one referred to by the tweeter I mentioned above. There are some funny answers in there. Some of the usual Jake evasion but some direct answers.
Forgot to add this, from a different tweeter:
Told Jake Gyllenhaal it'd be great to see him play a killer like @theshoesmusic video. He said no one's ever ended an intvu with that request
Yes, the photos in the Daily Mail are heartbreaking. Seeing PSH's partner, his mother, his children, his whole family is just shattered, and his friends are inconsolable.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a jerk. Hoe the hell do you dare to dress up like that!!!! Those shows, jeans, greasy hair and the ugliest beard I have ever seen. Hè is a great actor and so handsome. Why, why!!! Please go and film that bloody Everest movie. After that: groom.
If you can only think about the way that Jake is dressed then a lot of people at that funeral are jerks. PSH was not a suit and die guy, his own family was not dressed to the nines. Its not about what the fans think about Mr. Hoffman, its about what his family wanted and what Mr. Hoffman wanted.
And for the record, his hair was not greasy and for the record why don't you go bathe away your bitterness.
Hi everyone, it's Maria here - haven't posted here for a while but been following your great posts, thank you very much for keeping us up to date with all things Gyllenhaal!
Agnes, everyone is entitled to their opinion but is there really a need to call Jake a jerk? Surely the most important thing at a funeral it's being present and supportive of the family - not what you're wearing... Besides, we can only see Jake's coat...
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with his clothes. Actually, we can't see what he is wearing because of the coat, but looking at some pictures on IHJ, I think he is with a sweater. If it were required suit, I'm sure Jake would be wearing one. He always dresses appropriately for every occasion.
"Martin Henderson (“The Ring”), Emily Watson (“Punch-Drunk Love”) and Thomas Wright (“The Bridge”) have joined the cast of Baltasar Kormákur’s epic adventure movie “Everest,” TheWrap has learned."
OK this is getting rather interesting and comical but Jake is still attached.
I was not crazy about Jake's funeral ensemble, but it doesn't seem like something PSH would have objected to. I think that's the only basis on which to judge, if we must judge.
Monica, I think Jake dresses appropriately for movie premieres and awards shows. But his non-professional attire can be questionable/too casual, in my opinion.
As always, Jake refuses to consult me on these pressing issues.
Working Title @Working_Title February 6 Weather forecast from the #EVEREST shoot in Italy: 'friendly' conditions today after disruption due to avalanche risk
Martin Henderson (“The Ring”), Emily Watson (“Punch-Drunk Love”) and Thomas Wright (“The Bridge”) have joined the cast of Baltasar Kormákur’s epic adventure movie “Everest,” TheWrap has learned.
I wonder if audiences will be able to distinguish all those bearded actors in mountain gear who will be wearing oxygen masks in some of the later scenes. Things don't get easier if you try to include the stories of two expeditions in one movie. I guess Jake's part will be shot in film studios. That could make sense for scenes that take place during a blizzard, at night or in tents. But his part might very well end up as one of many supporting roles in a very crowded cast.
According to the "The Wrap" arcticle "Everest" has added just another script writer: Simon Beaufoy. That's the previous script history of "Everest" according to Studio System News:
Screenwriters: Justin Isbell (rewrite), William Nicholson (previous draft), Lem Dobbs (previous draft), Mark Medoff (adaptation)
I get the impression that they struggle to make the 'ensemble version' of "Everest" work (which wouldn't surprise me actually). Based on which script Jake accepted his part in "Everest"? How important was his part at that point compared to the latest version?
Bill Harris @soundjam69 VFF2014 - Enemy - Dir - Denis Villeneuve. 5 out of 5. Wow. Blew me away. Id be shocked if this wasnt one of THE films of the year. Bravo.
Adrian Charlie @Adrian_Charlie ENEMY - Wow! Denis Villeneuve blew my mind! Gyllenhaal delivers the goods. I need to see it again! #VFF2014
"This British no-name actor has a bigger part in "Everst" than Jake. :grumpy"
lol Hagen, that would depend on the director and editor. But I am wondering if Jake just took this part to be in a major studio film with potential big box office. The scenes could be epic in 3D.
But I am wondering if Jake just took this part to be in a major studio film with potential big box office. If Jake wanted to be in a major studio film with big box office he would have stayed in Into the Woods. He chose to leave a huge Disney movie for a small independent one, quite the opposite of someone who wants parts in big studio movies.
"If Jake wanted to be in a major studio film with big box office he would have stayed in Into the Woods. He chose to leave a huge Disney movie for a small independent one, quite the opposite of someone who wants parts in big studio movies."
It was not a put down of Jake but I believe Jake's team is mixing it up, independent film, then major studio film. Maybe Everest replaced Into the Woods as his major studio film choice because it fit his schedule better. I don't need to see Jake in a major studio film to validate his success as an actor but I will concede to others who believe that it is a good idea for Jake to be in a major studio film now and again. Both parts are supporting and neither especially Woods are big parts.
I don't ever question Jake's love of acting....but I don't like your tone. I am giving you the "finger" as I type and I don't feel guilty about it.
But I am wondering if Jake just took this part to be in a major studio film with potential big box office.
Actually I can imagine that Jake is interested in playing Scott Fischer mostly for artistic reasons. Fischer seemed to be a charismatic guy (like the New York Times put it: Physical mastery wasn’t uncommon among Fischer’s peers; what set him apart was his personal magnetism and infectious enthusiasm. The man was a walking Red Bull-and-vodka cocktail.) And after all it's more prestigious to play the leader of an expedition than one of the mountain guides or clients. Maybe he thinks of Scott Fischer as a juicy role. (Though I'd argue it's not enough to play a compelling personality, if your character doesn't have to do all that much, especially in a 3D / IMAX adventure movie.)
Heath Ledger had a small role in Monsters Ball. He was only in the first 29 minutes but we felt his presence for the rest of the movie. Diana Oddana and Larry Mc Murtry was impressed so much they thought of no one else for Ennis.
I love all the kudos for Enemy but I do wonder how it will play to the masses.
Some reviews suggest that "Enemy" will split audiences (Times Colonist on "Enemy": You’ll either love or loathe this artful metamorphosis if you’re ever done trying to figure it out.)
He was only in the first 29 minutes but we felt his presence for the rest of the movie.
I haven't watched "Monster's Ball", but it's easier to achieve that presence in a drama than in a popcorn movie. (And Jake is at a different point of his career than Heath back then.)
Jake Gyllenhaal spotting last night. Was sitting so close to us and looked ripped, very burly and hot of course. Sorry Andrew Porter even though he supposedly split with Alyssa miller... They were having dinner together so you heard it here first! Ha!! Share · 20 hours ago near New York, NY, United States ·
If interminably dark and unsettling Prisoners weren’t enough of a convincer that Jake Gyllenhaal and Denis Villeneuve is the next big actor/director tandem, then perhaps Enemy will do the trick. Actually shot prior to Prisoners, the sinister and devious Enemy is an epic mind-screw that crawls around in the dark corners of the psyche like a spider in a dusty attic. Subdued, deliberate in execution yet infuriatingly incoherent, Villeneuve's film is as confusing as it is transfixing.
At only about 90 minutes, Villeneuve's slow burn approach to this clash of male egos can prove an exhaustive exercise, but he still manages to captivate with an unsettling Fincher-esque tone and Gyllenhaal's mesmerizing performance. More an art-house thriller than the big studio Prisoners, Enemy presents an abstract, off-the-wall dreamscape that doesn't always jibe with the seriousness of the situation. Chillingly embraced by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans' disquieting soundtrack, the occasional splashes of B-movie humor seem deliberately placed to leave you unprepared for the impressively terrifying and shocking finale, one of such instant horror it snaps everything into focus. Enemy will be seen as an off anomaly to some, but it explores human (particularly male) frailty with Villeneuve's meticulous eye for oppressive mood. If anything, it proves he's one of the most interesting and forward-thinking directors working today, and hopefully he has the foresight to keep Gyllenhaal close at hand.
Lets see, is Jake joining the filming crew? Is Jake going back to LA for more business or just to get out of the cold? Or is Jake gearing up for Enemy promo? Or is the Jake at the airport one of a million doppelgangers.
Are all these doppelgangers at the airport a cheap way to promote Enemy?
On the third floor of the Spotted Pig in the West Village on Thursday evening, ?uestlove was hosting a party, quietly paid for by Bono, for Maria Alyokhina, 25 years old, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 24, the two members of Pussy Riot who were released from Siberian labor camps in December.
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard stood a few feet away, in a conversation with Marina Abramovic. Jake Gyllenhaal joined them, squeezing the hand of Alyssa Miller, his girlfriend, a Victoria's Secret model.
FP, I cannot access this information. When I go to the link you provide they want me to pay. How were you able to see this information FP? Do you have a subscription?
Thanks. How in the world did you first find it? When I saw that Jake went to the party, and I saw the pictures of him with his sister and Peter, I looked for more informations about the event, but did not ever see this. It is very interesting. : )
Andrea I always do it this way, when it comes to the WSJ, had happened to me one more time with an article about Jake at a party with Jay-Z, as to read the entire article you must be a subscriber, I'll take a part of the article then I insert it on google and it turns out the article in its entirety
Well, there are no pictures of Jake with a girl from this event, so it could likely be a case of mistaken identity, and it is the same girl he was walking with from the photos on IHJ.
Anon I think if the reporter from WSJ says "Alyssa Miller, Victoria Secret's model," he intends Alyssa Miller, the girl who was photographed with Jake the other day is very pretty, but in no way can be mistaken for a Victoria Secret's angel
I thought Alyssa Miller was a Sports Illustrated model. I have never seen anything about her with Victoria's Secret. This is why I am thinking even if it is not this girl with Jake walking down the street, it could be mistaken. It could be someone else entirely.
I will just add that Jake is so "stealth" we rarely see photos, but it would be nice if we could see a picture. When we do see the photos who knows who it will be, Jake is very popular with all the girls.
I just discovered that Working Title has a twitter so you can get updates on the Italian shoot for Everest. Hope Jake really was at the airport on his way over there.
RIP Shirley Temple. : ) My grandmother used to make me and my cousins watch her movies on TV when we were little. Then my mother made me take tap-dancing lessons because of her. LOL! Seriously!
Universal Pictures Germany plans to release "Everest" on February 26th over here (Filmstarts). Apparently the movie will get a simultaneous international release.
Thanks for the snowy set photo, UV. I'm glad the caption includes Jake's name. LOL!
Hagen, maybe you might know this: If Jake actually was at the airport heading to Italy, I've been trying to figure out how he'd get to the camp/set. Maybe he'd take a train or be driven there from a larger city? I imagine it would take most of the day to get there, and get settled. Those mountains are pretty impressive. Not Everest, but still impressive.
I've been trying to figure out how he'd get to the camp/set.
Hm, not sure. We drove to South Tyrol by car. ;-) Jake might fly to Bolzano via Rome. Bolzano isn't far away from Schnalstal Valley (67 km). It shouldn't be very difficult to get there as it is a popular ski resort.
Hey wrong Gyllenhaal but word is that Maggie will make her Broadway debut this fall opposite Ewan Mcgregor. Darn Jake I thought we would hear from you on Broadway this fall.
Working Title: EVEREST Starts Principal Photography in Nepal (12th February 2014)
The epic adventure stars Jason Clarke (The Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty), Josh Brolin (True Grit, No Country for Old Men), John Hawkes (Lincoln, Martha Marcy May Marlene) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code, Brokeback Mountain).
It's a bit late for such an announcement. Anyway Jake is still on the list.
LOL LOL LOL at myself because I am pretty pathetic. I was looking for The Shoes video with Jake on you tube and I came across this video of an English man reading Jake's palm.
According the palm reader Jake is in the right profession. He was seem accurate in Jake's persona though or what I know of it as fan. The comment about directors is priceless.
Clive Standen @CliveStanden 16h You have to be on your toes when the movie your shooting has a daily "Avalanche Risk Assessment"...Today's risk is: Grade 4 High !!!
I'm still wondering if Jake won't have any real outdoor scenes at all.
Charlene Lydon @charlenelydon 12. Feb. Cool trailer for a cool film. Warning: It's a lot weirder than the trailer makes it look. Denis Villeneuve's ENEMY
That's what I was thinking based on the reviews of "Enemy".
LA Times: Snubbed by Oscar but still in demand [how gracious]
Among those snubbed this past year are several well-known actors who used 2013 to reposition their careers. Rather than continue making forgettable studio fare like "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time," Jake Gyllenhaal returned to his indie film roots, starring in not one but two movies for French Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, including "Enemy," which opens March 14.
"I think I'm listening and trusting the relationships I have in my life," Gyllenhaal said. Thanks in part to his acclaimed work in Villeneuve's "Prisoners," Gyllenhaal now has more credibility as an actor. "He was incredible in that film," said director Antoine Fuqua, who hopes to direct Gyllenhaal in the boxing movie "Southpaw" after the actor completes the Alpine tragedy "Everest."

"Enemy" has been shown tonight as a suprise movie at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands. There are many pretty positive Dutch comments on "Enemy" on Twitter (#IFFR).

Variety: Baltasar Kormakur Chats About ‘Everest,’ ‘Vikings’ and ‘On The Job’

Hollywood Reporter @THR
Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams to Star in 'Ezekiel Moss' http://t.co/fEvPqxd3gq
Great trailer.
Jake and Amy Adams a film directed by PSH <3
script review: Ezekiel Moss
Love the trailer! I think I prefer the Enemy poster with the multiplw Jakes, this one is a bit creepy imo!
Thanks for the link Monica, I love Amy!
Hi guys,
My first post here. I've been lurking for some time, visiting because of UV's posts on the Dave Cullen Brokeback Mountain forum.
Since I first saw BBM in 2012, life just hasn't been the same ;)
It's so great to join you all here in our shared Jake obsession. So exciting to read all the news. I'm from The Netherlands, by the way.
Please be sure I'm reading here from time to time. Keep up the good work!
Love,
BlueJean a.k.a.
Sonja
Hi BlueJean!
Welcome!! :)
I love this trailer. Jake is great...or two Jakes :)
LikeMonalisa
Welcome, BlueJean!
Thanks, FP and Hagen! :)
Ultraviolet, he's definitely doing Everest, though your question may be rethorical ;-) the answer is in the interview posted by Hagen:
"January 31, 2014 Kormakur is currently shooting "Everest" with Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and Emily Watson" ( that's new! )
"Baltasar Kormakur is attending Goteborg fest to receive the inaugural Nordic Honorary Dragon Award and give a masterclass......
LOL ;)
Don't care much for the new poster like the other one with the many Jake's on it plus you can't see his gorgeous face.Loved the trailer.
Glad to hear about the new movie role always good to hear,
I knew the LA trip was business related, I wonder what else if anything is coming up for Jake.
Those movies should keep him busy a few months but maybe a break to do on Broadway.
jacqueline @jacrodgers 52m
Just passed Jake Gyllenhaal 👌 couldn't get a pic bc he was making out with a model... Ok
from Manhattan, NY
Making out with a model? Back with Alyssa we wonder?
WTF - in Rotterdam????
I should have known! :(
I'll google the reviews, UV. My Dutch is fine! ;)
And thanks for the welcome! x
Wow that trailer is intense and very effective!
I don't care for the faceless poster, I hope red poster is the official one.
Waves to blue jean!
I'm not making things up, everything is supported by what I read. I saved the links, will share them with you, but I'm trying to figure out how to make them clickable.
That's the format for clickable links: Link to other websites
Though I have no problem to copy and paste links.
There's a Dutch distributor for "Enemy": Filmfreak Distributie
No idea, if they have already set a release date.
OoNP, the red poster is the official Canadian poster. The brown one is for Spain, and the new yellow one is for the USA.
Shit...Wall Street Journal and other outlets are reporting Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead. Goddamn. :-(
I just heard. I'm in shock :(
Just heard the news too can't believe it.
Wow, that's heavy. 46 years old.
What a loss. He has struggled with drugs for yrs and checked into rehab last year.
RIP
What horrible news! So, so sad.
How horrible. I'm completely stunned. Terrible terrible news. He was such a gifted actor. Poor guy. He's been struggling for a while, as SAG actor said. So sad for his family.
This tweet just broke me.

Too much. So sad so sad so sad.
This is so sad. He was one of the best. Always great. : (
Rachel, Philip was nominated for best supporting actor when Heath won.
Actually, PSH won for Capote the same year as Heath was nominated for BBM.

I just heard the news about PSH, we were just talking about him directing Jake and Amy Adams and now this. how sad
Lily
I was about to post about Jake's latest project.
Such tragic news. He was battling his demons for years. My condolences to his family
Oh my, I am so sorry to hear about PSH.
He seemed so out of his element in Hollywood though when not on screen.
I can't believe it, he was only 46 and such a gifted actor. Such a tragic loss.
Philip was nominated and won for Capote same year that Jake and Heath were nominated for Brokeback.
He won the BAFTA for Lead actor same night that Jake won his BAFTA for Supporting actor. They must have known each other since then.
Thanks Hagen for the link, very kind of you. I'm just too shaken now to try it but I will soon.
Oh my God what a tragic unexpected news, I am shocked and my heart is broken,
He was such a bright talent, damn stupid drug.

Life does go on, a little ponytail. I understand why the movie will not be sold in Berlin and it may seem a bit disrespectful but I am anxious for Jake's next choice. I think EM will be delayed for a quite awhile.

I keep thinking of the Oscar photo with Jake, Heath, PSH, Clooney and Joaquin Phoenix. It's hard to believe two of them are gone now.
Tonight in LA:
Just saw Villeneuve's ENEMY. Elegantly crafted, pitch-perfect score, his most compact & ambitious work yet. Gyllenhaal never been sexier.
It's distressing how some artists tend to destruct themselves. And Hoffman had three young children. :sigh:
I hope at some point "Ezekiel Moss" will get back on track.

Hi Paula!
ScriptShadow's review of "Nightcrawler" is now available: Lou is also… strange. You aren’t going to find an easy way to describe him but if pressed I’d say he’s an ambitious sleazy sociopathic hustler with a tinge of autism.
I hope Jake nails his performance in Nightcrawler as he has done in recent roles.
I am ready for Nightcrawler myself, I can't get the screenplay out of my head.
LOL!

I guess he plays someone from Rob Hall's team. (He is in that picture of Jason Clarke's team in Nepal, sitting next to Jason Clarke.)
Everyone is joining Everest but Jake. LOL, but I guess none of Scott's team has been cast or begun shooting? I thought Fisher joined later.
I'm surprised to know they are still casting roles for the movie. I guess they are on a tight budget.

Ok, I've just been proven otherwise:

"He looks like Joaquin Phoenix in this photo. "
Yes!!! LOL!
It is odd that Jake hans't been part of filming so far
Not so much. A recent example is Anne Hathaway who began filming interstellar one month after the start of the filming.
I love Her, UV. I want to see it again.

Looking for the next model to charm and romance, lucky models. I wish I was 20 years younger and 40 pounds of less chocolate on me, lol.
"OTOH, Jake isn't A-list like Clooney or Damon. It's sad but true."
That may be true but it seems the blogger's definition of Jake not being an A-lister is that he has to co-star with other big names.
By that definition Clooney is not an A-lister box office wise either. His big box office hits starred some of his just as famous.
famous "friends".
Forgot that word but Clooney is so full of himself why trying not to be in public.
"At the press screening of the film: ENEMY starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent, @SarahGadon and Isabella Rossellini. #Enemy"
Well more reviews should be coming and tomorrow is Direct TV day
If Gosling or Gordon Levit who are not exactly weapons of war at the box offfice, are A lister then so is Jake, who this year did better than the two of them put together, and in any case all these talented actors, are much more A -lister than it was Clooney of their own age.and we can argue that Clooney is not an A lister like Daniel Day Lewis no matter how he try, and he tries hard, but Jake may be as DDL, because he has the talent, it's all a matter of perspective I guess
The script review article is sloppy and inaccurate, if you write about these things and you want to be credible get your facts straight
Aside from Into The Woods, and yet, in a small role
I think the author is trying to say is that Nightcrawler can change things for him. The role may cause the studios and great directors to see jake with other eyes. And so he can have his name in big projects.
Exactly. I want to se Jake's name attached to prestige projects with big directors.
Jessica Carvo @JessieCarvo 2 min
Today, I hustled for gigs.. and locked eyes with Jake Gyllenhaal. #thathappened
But if the comparison is DiCaprio then they're all going to be B lister, big time
That Nolan film is becoming sort of like a Gary Marshall film, piling on the stars one after the other.
I for one am not a Nolan fan, he ruin Batman and remember he didn't want Jake. So to me Nolan will never get my money or respect.
I just think it's sad that some of you think Jake has do to big films in order to be labeled a success.
Realist I must say, however, about Nolan, I do not agree, he did a great job with Batman he is a great visionary and talented director, JMO :)

Enemy is atmospheric, captivating and a total mystery.
I just think it's sad that some of you think Jake has do to big films in order to be labeled a success.
Hollywood thinks that.
I'm pretty comfortable with the way Jake is handling his career lately, don't need him to be in a blockbuster or a Nolan movie, to be honest
Very interesting discussion.
Yes. Exactly. ;)
A big, successful, but above all credible movie. Didn't like PoP much.
Jake tried hard as Prince Dastan, but the movie was just too much. The characters got lost in all the special effects.

Heading to SoHo to interview Jake Gyllenhaal. Anything you want to know?
I really liked Pop, BlueJean. But I know many people did not. And for many other reasons, it is perceived as a bigger failure than it actually was. It's great that Jake is finally putting it behind him.

There is a picture of Jake and Maggie on twitter with a better front view of Jake and yes his man bun again.

These images are heartbreaking, hagen. :(
His children's tears should not be public images. Those poor children, the little boy broke my heart.
Is it wrong to be angry with PSH?
Yes, the photos in the Daily Mail are heartbreaking. Seeing PSH's partner, his mother, his children, his whole family is just shattered, and his friends are inconsolable.
I'm glad Jake was able to go.
Agnes said...
Jake Gyllenhaal is a jerk.
RIP PHS...
I like Direct TV's Enemy Poster. Helluva hot.
OK this is getting rather interesting and comical but Jake is still attached.
wow Emily Watson. I love Emily Watson :)
This is getting comical, Realist. Is Jake's role a cameo?

Weather forecast from the #EVEREST shoot in Italy: 'friendly' conditions today after disruption due to avalanche risk
Martin Henderson (“The Ring”), Emily Watson (“Punch-Drunk Love”) and Thomas Wright (“The Bridge”) have joined the cast of Baltasar Kormákur’s epic adventure movie “Everest,” TheWrap has learned.
Martin Henderson started filming for "Everest" in Nepal (picture with Josh Brolin and John Hawkes).
Pathé UK seems to have forgotten that "Enemy" still exists. The release of the movie is announced for February 7th. xD

lol Hagen, that would depend on the director and editor.
I don't think Into the Woods is necessarily a big stdio film. Certainly it's from a big studio, but it's a risk. It's not a big action epic.
Hagen, I hope against hope that Jake's role isn't tiny. But it's a shame we aren't going to get any photos of him in the actual mountains.
Gyllencrazy, thanks for the link. Will go watch now.
And hello to Maria - welcome back out of lurkerdom. I hope you won't wait MCL days to post again :)

Great day in NYC. Walked past Jake Gyllenhaal as well in SoHo... Impressive beard on the man.

Diana Oddana and Larry
Mc Murtry was impressed so much they thought of no one else for Ennis.
Ha!!

Two Pussy Riot Members Make a Splash in New York

Andrea no, please google the part of the article that I posted, and you will see the entire article

Ah, yes. It looks like it's from that photo shoot.
Google recognized it as German but apparently they haven't programmed South Tyrolean German yet!
Thanks, Hagen.

That was fun, realist.
So Southpaw is happening?
Apparently there are already plans to expand "Enemy" to more theaters after its limited release in New York:
The Bijou Metro, Eugene (Oregon):
Enemy will open on Friday, March 28.
Featurette about doubling Jake in "Enemy"
