Back to school

The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University has not yet begun classes. But they did have an early seminar Tuesday night: Jake Gyllenhaal on a segment of Inside the Actors Studio, with legendary host James Lipton.

A lot of folks showed up for the taping, though most kept their cell phones and cameras away:

There was no tweeting from anyone as the discussion was happening. But we did get a few snippets:

"Forgive yourself and believe in your choices."

"Don't let the character's uniform define you. We worked six months in rehearsal to shed the uniform."

"Annie [Hathaway] is precise. Technique. I'm a mess. I like to throw things against the wall and see what sticks."

"Winning an award for the movie with the sixth-most profanity of all time. Now that would make me proud." (re: End Of Watch)

"Nothing gives me more joy than seeing other actors kill it."

Hopefully we'll hear more from the lucky attendees. And we'll find out soon when the program will air.

"Bad lighting, bad angle, bad-ass dude."

<"Is it cool if I get a pic with you? Unless you’re exhausted. Is this like super intrusive?" And then he lol’d so I guess we’re best friends now right?>

I cannot wait to see this. Lucky students to have Jake conducting an acting seminar! He looks wonderful, too.

    I can't wait to hear James Lipton's dramatic introduction! : )

  9. Oh, Chica :( :( :(

I was secretly hoping you'd go so we'd have an insider report. That's a shame.

Thanks, FP. Haven't heard a bad review yet :)

Thanks also to Gyllencrazy for asking for more details:

First time at the taping for Inside the Actors Studio yesterday with Jake Gyllenhaal. Can't wait to get started with @ActorsStudioMFA

Good luck! I bet it was an inspiring experience.

was indeed! The passion and humility he possesses as an actor also he's very funny!

  10. I'm so happy ! This Actors Studio thing is too cool , yesterday I felt like during "If there is I haven't found it yet", I was so proud and at the same time sad because I could not see the play in person, yesterday I would have done anything to be in NY!

  13. I'm glad that Jake apparently deviated from his standard phrases for the "Inside the Actors Studio" interview. I'm definitely looking forward to watch that show.

"Prisoners" is R-rated for disturbing violent content including torture, and language throughout - hardly a surprise.

Jake might finally meet Reese Witherspoon again in San Sebastián. ;-)

Another three movies have been added to the "Official Selection" at the San Sebastián Film Festival that will compete with "Enemy" for the "Golden Shell": Atom Egoyan's "Devil's Knot" starring Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon, "For Those Who Can Tell No Tales" by Jasmila Žbanić (She won a Golden Bear for "Grbavica" at the Berlinale in 2006.) and Götz Spielmann's "October November" (He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2008.)

    1. I got yelled at for taking this.. worth it. #youdontownme #actorsstudio #filmmaking

    Whhhhaaaaat! Who's on?

    Jake gyllenhaal. He was fantastic

(It was just a stage photo.)

    2. Great as soon as I get to the airport to leave NYC for a week, I get a call from MTV about a cameo in a commercial on Friday.... I guess such is life. On the bright side Jake Gyllenhaal, was absolutely inspiring on inside the actors studio, so incredibly wise, humble and generous. I think my teenage crush is back!

    3. Jake Gyllenhaal is a wise wise man. You will see what I'm talking about when his episode of Inside the Actors Studio premieres.

And this is so wonderful to hear. Mermon asked one of the attendees how it was, and this was her reply:

It was fantastic, he's incredibly candid and insightful. Lipton said he was one of the 8 best "teachers" in the show's 19 years.

  15. Added a couple of new photos.

Let's just say it's a good thing these people want to work in front of the camera!

FP, I know how you feel. I'm sorry you didn't get to see the play. And I'm sorry we couldn't all go to see this. But this time, at least, we get to see some of it on tape.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Any indication of when it might air?

  17. Thanks UV for posting the tweets. I love Jake's statement to forgive yourself and believe your choices. That struck a chord with me.

I hope we find out when it will air.

I'm so happy that Jake is doing something different for promoting a movie! Of course he will be doing the usual talk shows but this is going to bd awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks, anon. Added that very nice photo to the end of the post.

Lots to look forward to. I hope they talked about Enemy, too, and maybe have a clip.

From the tweeter who asked for questions for Jake:

Jake Gyllenhaal tapono was great. I had the chance to made a question but it was to long for tweeter, both question and answer...

Hope I make it trough the editing and you get to see it on air.

He doesn't say what the question was.

I think I just saw Jake Gyllenhaal walking a beagle, but I'll never know bc I was doing like a NYer and aggressively avoiding eye contact.

    LOL!

  23. Apparently Ben Affleck will play Batman in the Man of Steel sequel. Not a bad move for Ben IMO. But would have been a bad career choice for Jake I think.

I still cannot see Ben in Gone Girl. Not sure who I would cast in that role, but he's not at all what I pictured as I read the book.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well. I just read some amazing news: Ben Affleck has been confirmed for Batman in the Superman sequel. Of all the names floating around, his was the last one I expected to get picked. Not sure how I feel. Not sure if Jake was really contending for it or if he wanted it. I hate it when they throw his name in the pot for films that go to someone else. : (

  27. Ugh. Ben Affleck keeps getting Jake's roles.

I am just as happy not to have to see the inanity that Batman v. Superman will undoubtedly be. But I absolutely do not understand choosing Ben Affleck. And I like Ben!

Maybe he'll have to drop Gone Girl.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, I didn't expect.

Excited to see Actors Studio with Jake. I think it will be great!

  29. Ben & Jake have the same agent, too. : (

  30. One good thing about Jake not being Batman: Not having to read all the outraged reaction to the choice.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh my poor, Ben Affleck, people on twitter si trashing him,
not like they would not have done the same thing with, Jake and anyone else.
People get too emotional about these things!
They would never take someone like Jake, young and beautiful as Cavill, but contrary of Cavill is above all an amazing talented actor (with all due respect) Cavill was in danger of being completely overshadowed
rather, someone reassuring, like Ben Affleck, older than cavill therefore not in direct competition, which has proven to be a great director, but let's face, as an actor that's not that much.
However, all this drama by fans of Batman seems excessive to me, give Ben some credit, has just won an Oscar, and maybe he will do very well!

2 celeb sightings in the same night?! First Kelsey Grammer at Keste, then Jake Gyllenhall at 16 Handles. It's like the NYC vsn of birding.

  33. Does anybody know the Premiere dates for Prisoners? I cannot find any information. Why is this movie getting no marketing?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Do you mean the official premiere? That's not publicized much, usually. You find out close to the date.

It's premiering at TIFF on 9/6.

FP, people are being very mean. And it would have been just as brutal, if not worse, if Jake had been chosen. The BrokeBat jokes would have been flying.

I added another photo from ITAS to the top of the post.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was surprised to hear about Ben Affleck being the new Batman. I am SO glad Jake didn't get involved with that.

I can't wait to see the Prisoners.

  36. A small still from "Enemy": Rhombus Media. Actually we've seen very similar pictures of Jake in front of a streetcar before (IHJ), but not yet in the movie's "palette of muted browns." ;-)

  37. I got a message from someone whose posts hadn't appeared and went back to check the GB spam folder. Tweets from several regulars (SAG Actor, OONP, Lily, Leonor among others) had been marked as spam over the past few months.

So apologies if your post disappeared. If it happens to anyone, just let me know.

Several NYC Jake sightings tonight. Wonder if he made it to this event after the ITAS taping.

  38. Hagen, LOL. And thanks for the still. It is a (small) first step, one hopes.

  39. Ben & Jake have the same agent, too. : (

I read that the actors represented by Patrick Whitesell also have another agent. I don't know how it works, but I know that Patrick is the principal agent of Jude Law, but he also is represented by Boomer Malkin.

I think Patrick is doing a great job with Jake, Bob. I don't know if Jake wants to play a superhero. Perhaps he is more interested in challenging roles.
I'd love to see Jake starring a big summer movie, but at the moment I'm fine with what he's doing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "I'd love to see Jake starring a big summer movie, but at the moment I'm fine with what he's doing"

He will sooner than you think.

As for Ben's role as Batman, its for the big paycheck and its a huge boost to his ego. Somehow I don't think Ben would have taken this role if Argo had not been successful. But I wonder what his pal George Clooney thinks about this move? Isn't it George who has been complaining about big budget movies like Superman and Batman that are making a difficult to get other smaller and more original screen plays made? He's right though but I wonder how vocal Clooney will be now that one of his good friends has sort of jumped ship.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Clooney probably will make a joke about it. But I think he thinks it will be good for Ben.
THR says that Ben will not be blamed if this doesn't work. I believe also, the contract involves full control over his upcoming films, with the possibility of him being the director of the new Batman movies or Justice League. Ben is a respected director, but if he becomes a big box office director... Look what happened to Nolan.
Of course, I also think he wants to be a successful actor like RDJ.

Saw MGK and jake gyllenhall walk right by us in soho today

    Who is MGK?

    ReplyDelete
  43. MGK may be a young (23) rapper, known as "Machine Gun Kelly". This person is from Toronto, and was visiting NYc. It doesn't mean that Jake was with MGK, just that he saw the two of them walking around SoHo.

I don't think George Clooney will judge Ben Affleck at all for doing Batman. He understands the business.
