Miscellaneous

Much like Jake Gyllenhaal's beard, the last post was getting too long. So while we wait to see if pictures emerge of a less scruffy Jake, let's clear out some old photos from the end of the year: an assortment of photos from the Hurricane Sandy benefit at Madison Square Garden, ICAP Charity Day and a couple of random one-offs.

I love the optical illusion in that first photo.

  1. I just realized that Jake's first movie Dad, Billy Crystal was also at the telethon. I wondered if Jake caught up with Billy like he did Miss Sarandon.

  2. The Oscar nominees ... wow
    Affleck and Bigelow snubbed!

    many surprises!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Really? So I assume no Jake? I refused to watch the nominations but the fact that Ben was snubbed tells me the Oscars are really about who can mount the most financially driven campaign (Harvey Weinstein looking at you).

What were the other surprises Monica?

  4. What a great find UV, love the pics! Can't wait to see the "clean" shaven Jake, LOL!

My shock is at the Bigelow snub! Not so much for Ben since he wasn't really getting much buzz from the critics.

  5. Leo snubbed, tarantino snubbed as director, Marion snubbed,
SLP in all categories of actors, Tom Hooper snubbed,

I'm happy for Ang Lee, Haneke, DeNiro,

  8. Why The Academy keep in snubbing Leo? I mean he's a legend.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Weinstein bought the Oscars for SLP back in 2012, what he did not have enough money to buy Leo an Oscar nomination?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Scott LOL!:)

And WHY WHY WHY Nolan get snubbed???

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm so happy for Joaquin Phoenix. I have not seen the movie, but I'm happy! Hehehe
    Weinstein again shows his power!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Beasts of Wild, well somehow I think this movie will overshadow all the rest except Lincoln and PI. I think PI will win best picture, Ang Lee deserves it after all.

I still say a lot of these noms were already selected before members ever saw the films and if that watched at all. Something sticks though.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Joaquin Phoenix and DDL totally deserve and even HJ, Bradley Cooper not So much JMO :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. FP, Nolan didn't deserve this time, but I'm surprised that TDKR has zero nominations.

Scott, Weinstein put Leo and Waltz for supporting actors. But Leo has the next year, he has the scorsese.

David O.Russel again at the Oscars. When he goes to work with Jake again?

Nolan always deserve to me;) Hehe

I wish but I just can't see this happen :(

  16. Bigelow and Affleck definitely deserved nominations. DOR shouldn't have gotten that slot. Four for four acting noms for SLP: all of them could/should have gone to better performances.

JP for The Master should have gone to Jake, Michael Pena or probably 10 other performances. I do not understand the praise for the performance or how it got in.

A very weird lineup. Not looking forward to hearing Jeff Wells crow about SLP. I really, really hope it does not win anything.

  18. "War Witch" is nominated as "Best Foreign Language Film". Jake handed Rachel Mwanza, the leading actress of "War Witch", an award at the Berlinale Film Festival. ("Amour" will win in that category anyway.) The cinematographer of "War Witch", Nicolas Bolduc, filmed with Jake "An Enemy".

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hagen "Amour" is absolutely AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  20. (sigh.)I just have to shake my head. Odd that they nominated nine films for Best Picture, but just couldn't come up with a tenth?

I don't get the love for SLP. Not at all. When you consider who/what was overlooked. The snubs are pretty amazing.

Thanks for the new post, UV. I love it when you find "backstage" stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am glad Tom Hooper wasn't in and Ang did it again!!!
I am surprised that Ben Affleck and Biglow missed....

And John Hawks should replace Hugh Jackman or Bradly Cooper....

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh yeah, John Hawkes I forgot him. But yeah for Hugh Jackman, Prisoners will be just about an all Oscar nominated cast.

I like Bradley but no that Oscar nom was not fully deserved. Unfortunately the Oscars have always seemed tainted. I Daniel will probably win but I hope Joaquin wins, he deserved it back in 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Scott ITA about Joaquin , He's one of my favourite actors, after Jake of course ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well Oscars are for great performances for actors who go beyond what anyone believe possible. Brad Cooper did that in SLP, what I do not get is Amy Adams and her always getting nominated. Naomi Watts, I am happy for but what about the male lead in that movie? How can Helen Hunt be a supporting actress when she is one half the centerpiece of the movie?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Maybe jake will present at the Oscars, maybe he and Michelle together could introduce Life of PI.

    ReplyDelete
  29. No way Bradley Cooper deserv this nom over John Hawks or Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was not surpised that Jake or Michael/EOW didn't get any noms was hoping.Surised that there was only 9 for best picture why couldn't thay come up a tenth one?
Also alot of snubs too.Hope DDL wins for Lincoln loved the movie haven't seen Life of Pi but glad for Ang Lee.Be nice if Jake is asked to present.

  39. Hagen "Amour" is absolutely AMAZING!

I haven't watched "Amour" yet, but Haneke is usually too downbeat for my taste.

Roger Deakins got his 10th Oscar nomination for "Skyfall". He hasn't won so far, but next year he will win for "Prisoners".

  40. Oh, maybe I'm mistaken then. I saw an old tweet from her talking about picking up her grandparents at LAX (for Christmas I think) so just assumed she lived there.

    Sorry about that.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Do not be sorry. I am glad you checked. Sometimes on the tweet they say it was tweeted from a certain location, but this did not. At least you tried to research your tweet. Maybe it's true then. We shall see. I did not expect Jake to go to the Critics Choice event, but I was hoping for a Golden Globes appearance.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It may have been Jake or Gosling, TOby McGuire, Adam Levine, Joe Schmoo. People see Jake all the time everywhere.

I really wish Jake had a Gyllenbabble micro chip in his head so we could keep up with him.

    ReplyDelete
  43. LOL! I recall maybe a year ago reading a series of comments on FB of someone who was just gushing about Jake, and how hot he was, then said she had loved him ever since she saw The Notebook. ; )

It's always good idea to research tweets or facebook sightings, even photos, or try to put them in context with other comments or tweets if you can, to help determine a location and verify.

The most fun "scoop" has to be a dull Saturday night hanging out on GB, when Tweety & I discovered/tracked tweets from Nashville, of Jake with Mumford & Sons, & Carrie Mulligan performng at someone's house.

The Twitterverse soon exploded with dozens of tweets so after the first brief trickle, it was easy to verify. But still very surprising. : )

  47. Jackman is in Stone Mountain?

WHILE most Oscar nominees were glued to TV sets nervously hoping to hear their names, Hugh Jackman almost missed the announcement he had scored his first Oscar nod.

Luckily for the Australian star, who is in Atlanta filming the crime-drama Prisoners, his driver was well aware of the big moment.

"I hadn't planned to listen live to the announcements, but when I got into the car this morning to go to work, the driver had the nominations streaming as they were being broadcast," Jackman said.

"To be honest, it's very exciting but all a bit surreal, and it hasn't fully sunk in yet."

He has visited Brazil several times. He's so adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Great catch, monica. Guess things are already starting to move in GA.

My youngest daughter informed me that she'd once climbed Stone Mountain,& there's absolutely nothing to do around Conyers, "That is definitely not somewhere I'd go."

Then she started teasing me telling me how much she loved...Ryan Gosling! When she started laughing I knew she was joking. (I like Ryan. But he's not Jake. : ))

She's not in the area now, anyway, but I don't think she'll be very helpful in terms of her previous familiarity with that area.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Daniel Craig just won. They really gave short shrift to Jake though. The clip they showed from EOW was shown in the background while the presenters announced his name and it was shown for approximately 1 second plus it was a scene at night in the patrol car.

Happy that I don't have to watch anymore. :-)

  53. Was nice to see Jake's name called as a nominee for best actor/action movie for EoW just now @ Critics Choice awards. Daniel Craig won the category. Hugh Jackman is there.

  55. Well it's 2013 now, last year is still creeping into the New Year. I for one, do not expect a lot of Jake news outside of his own fans, in other words Jake will more than likely be off everyone's radar for the first nine months of 2013.

Gosling once again has a million movies coming out and one with Brad Cooper. Tatum has about half a million movies this year as well one with Maggie G. Then there is Justin Timberlake and his new music in which he would use to promote his new movie also coming out this year. Then there is Superman, Star Trek (which is good), Iron Man II and another big Science Fiction with the next big thing Idris Elba(but he was supposed to have already been a breakout). Leo and his remake with a really good cast. Not to mention Brad Pitt, Angelina and George Clooney's ego has been too quiet. And the countless remakes of action movies with up and coming young stars.

I will stop, I am depressing myself. It's a shame that EOW, Michael, Jake and David did not get the respect it deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Better than that one who plays himself!

Jake and Chris were a lot better than Craig. Craig was overshadowed by Bardem and Judi Dench.

So we can bea little bit happy:)

    ReplyDelete
  58. No FP, don't be sad. It was a good year for Jake, I think he will do great next year, sometimes it's good to be off the radar as long as you finish with a bang and Jake will.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love reading your convos. The things you find...

I didn't expect Jake or EOW to get noticed at the Oscar's. And after Affleck and Bigelow got snubbed - how serious can one really take this?

The awards turn more and more into a big PR deal where the actors and movies which get promoted and "sell" themselves best, win and not real talent.

Even if we don't understand his motivation, Jake seems to not care about PR and selling himself just to get an award IMO.
Wheter that is smart or not, I don't know.

What I do know is that Jake has to look in the mirror in the morning and be happy with how he lives his life and what choices he makes.

And - more than ever - that seems to be the case.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Not surprised that EOW didn't make the cut but it's still disappointing. The Academy could have nominated EOW for BP to round out the list or even The Master since they nominated the 3 leads

I think Jake will keep a low profile, while networking is important Jake seems pretty busy this year. Prisoners may take a couple of months to shoot and then he has to work on MG and before you know it will be time to promote two films this year I hope. And who knows what else Jake has in planning stages or perhaps been offered.

  68. Laure, you were right about Ralph.

Despite of its upcoming DVD / Blu-ray release EoW is still in 111 (discount) theaters.

"Prisoners" will be distributed in Germany by the same company as EoW (Tobis). That's quite surprise, I thought Warner Bros. would distribute the movie worldwide. Overall Tobis did a decent job with EoW, so I don't mind that. I will bully them into publishing a poster with Jake. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I will bully them into publishing a poster with Jake. ;)
:) This way, if Warner sticks to the Hugh poster, at least in Europe we'll have one with Jake!

Laure, you were right about Ralph.
Glad to see they're consistent, Hagen.
I remember Dylan Minnette from "Grey's Anatomy" and "Lost": he has piercing eyes. Know what's funny though? Because of his blue eyes, he looks a little bit like... Jake.

It seems that "Prisoners" will start principal photography on January 16, as previously reported. According to the casting agency in charge, they had several casting calls this week, including one today. On their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/tammysmithcasting) the shooting schedule is specified:

For the feature film "PRISONERS" for this FRIDAY, Jan 11th and then possible multiple dates within our shooting dates of Jan 16th thru Apr 2nd.

It would explain Jake shaving his beard early this week, plus all the tweets from Atlanta & Conyers.

It's possible Jake hasn't left Atlanta (not even for LA and awards ceremonies, unfortunately). I would have loved to see him on the red carpet for Critics' Choice (ironically, even the winner of Jake's category wasn't there) or presenting at the Globes. Still, besides the fact he was a presenter last year and this year the list includes some puzzling names, Jake is genuinely busy at the moment.

We have reasons to be happy: he'll be working on a thrilling project, then he will co-produce & star in a more personal project, possibly go to Cannes or TIFF with "An Enemy", and definitely promote two movies. With the critical praise that "An Enemy" (and "Prisoners") could get him this year, other opportunities may arise. Like projects with highly acclaimed directors or even a big studio production. If Maggie, universally acknowledged as a serious thespian, can make a summer blockbuster with Roland Emmerich, I think Jake should be open to all possibilities and offers. And I believe they will come along with nominations.

    ReplyDelete
  70. LOL, Lily. That's hilarious.

It's sad to go through yet another awards season without Jake nominated. But I don't think he should do the Oscars or the GGs. He can skip a year; it's okay.

Much to our chagrin, bobbyanna! :)

I'm bummed that Jake wasn't nominated for any big awards this season. He's got only one nomination (with slim to none chances), and he didn't attend.
But I'm also a realist. For Hugh Jackman, this is the peak of his career. I'm sure he'll attend all the awards shows. For some of them (Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a comedy/musical) he's a frontrunner.
Melissa Leo - is she nominated for something this year? is she invited to present? Although, she's a rather recent Oscar winner...

There's a great Oscars analysis from movie critic Michael Smith. Pretty accurate IMO (with a bias towards "Lincoln" but can you blame the guy?). Amongst all the nominations and snubs, he mentions Jake:

BEST ACTOR - In a category consisting of largely the expected choices, there are those who never really got a look from the Academy and should have (Jack Black in "Bernie", Jake Gyllenhaal in "End of Watch"), and then there is the outright snub of John Hawkes in "The Sessions," which is one of the many oversights that has Hollywood baffled.

  75. I for one and am ready to get past the Awards season, it is what it is. Part of the lure of the Oscars is that everyone has their opinion on who got snubbed. You never know if people vote based on what is really good or who they like or who told them what to like. And there is also the new electronic voting that could be blame, my point we just don't know and nothing will change.

I guess I am putting my hopes in Jake's two projects with Denis but you never know what may happen with those projects such as delays or they may not be well received. Acting is a skill but also you need a lot of luck with great timing. Keeping my hopes for Jake to have a great 2013 and beyond.

wow Zero Dark Thirty. It's a great job of Kat Bigelow (she was robbed), great script and great performance from Jessica Chastain. I don't know if she will win after all the controversy surrounding the film, but she deserves. She or Riva.
Still need to see Jen Law.

  80. I'm afraid that poor thing might be disappointed. The details don't sound too solid.

Bigelow was definitely robbed, as was Ben Affleck.

Monica, did you see The Impossible? I watched it today, because Django Unchained was sold out. It was incredibly draining. I don't think I've ever heard more people crying at a movie.

It's not a great movie, but it's definitely moving. I don't think Naomi Watts really deserves that OScar nomination, either. The kid who played her son deserved one more.

  92. "That girl "Wallis" is a Child!
CBS Morning News two weeks ago had a section on her and she is now 9 and has a wonderful sense of humor and loved acting.
There was a moment where in the trying out for the role she was asked to throw a stuff animal at one of the Producers and she wouldn't do it - why? because it wouldn't be right. You don't throw things at people.
When it was first just a small little movie that no one had heard of she was getting great reviews. She didn't come out of nowhwere & get nominated because she was a little girl - she got nominated because early on they were saying she gave an amazing performance.
And every year there are always excellent performances and directors who aren't nominated - just because the ones who were snubbed doesn't mean there aren't great people and movies nominated. Looks to me that everyone nominated was good enough to be nominated. It was a tough year - lots of good things out there.
I think Ben should of been nominated for Director - but again, it happens almost every year. If he keeps going as he is, he will be nominated again and hope will win.

  95. Well I guess that means Jake is in Brooklyn not in LA at the GG Awards, lol!

I'm pissed that Bigelow was overlooked, there is some backlash in HW over ZDT, It will be interesting to see how things turn out regarding the awards.

  99. Annie, sorry if I was rude, that was not my intention. I saw her performance and think she didn't deserve. Just that.
When I used "that girl" was because I forgot how to spell Quvenzhanรฉ.

    Tina and Amy are great.

  102. Here we go, people: no beard.

From the GG, it looks like Hugh is going to be the facial-hairy one in Prisoners.

  103. Well, it looks like his sideburns are kind of long, but no beard. Maggie is there, too,i think.

I was laughing so hard, tears were streaming at Will Farrell and Kristen Wiig.1

  106. Yeah that's him , I think the Nets are winning.

The Golden globe awards are crap IMO but I like that they serve wine to the actors during the broadcast, hee, hee!

  107. I don't mind HJ's look right now, but I hated his "Wolverine" look.

yeah, chica, that's what makes the GG fun. As the evening wears on, the wine and the open bar make things very interesting. : )

I was typing on my tablet before and it's a pain.

So glad to see that beautiful face, Jake!
