The foul-mouthed uncle

That's the character Jake Gyllenhaal will play in his American stage debut, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet:

Roundabout Theatre Company has announced that movie star Jake Gyllenhaal will be making his American stage debut in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, a comedic drama by Nick Payne at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre this fall. The play will be directed by Michael Longhurst, with three additional actors and the design team to be announced shortly.

Provocative, insightful and laced with fresh humor, If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet is an entertaining look at a regular family stuck somewhere between knowing what the problem is... and doing something about it.

Fifteen-year-old Anna's weight makes her a natural target for bullies. When her mom transfers Anna to the school where she teaches in order to protect her daughter, it only makes things worse. Anna's environmentalist dad, determined to finish his new book and save the planet, is no help at all. Just as Anna gets suspended for retaliating with a head-butt, her estranged uncle Terry (Jake Gyllenhall) arrives unannounced. A heartbroken drifter with the mouth of a sailor, Terry reaches out to Anna in a way that no one ever has. Their unexpected friendship sends her parents' rocky marriage into a tailspin as the whole family wonders, what--or who--really needs saving?

From the New York Times:

A play about a young, lost, broken-hearted antihero, with a knack for empathy but a little clueless about life’s problems? Paging Jake Gyllenhaal! Mr. Gyllenhaal, who became a movie star for poignant performances in “Donnie Darko” and “Brokeback Mountain,” will make his American stage debut this summer in the Roundabout Theater Company production of “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet,” a British play that turns on an overweight teenager’s relationship to her drifter uncle (Mr. Gyllenhaal).

And from Todd Haimes, the artistic director for the Roundabout:

I am beyond thrilled to not only be welcoming Jake to the Roundabout family, but also to be hosting his American theatrical debut. In addition to his many films, for which he has garnered much well deserved praise, he also gave a highly acclaimed performance in This is Our Youth on London’s West End.

More info:

If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, Nick’s incisive and farcical look at the incoherence, selfishness and love inside an average family won the George Devine Award in 2009 and premiered at The Bush Theatre to glowing critical reviews.

If There Is... will mark Nick’s American debut, Michael’s New York directorial debut and Jake’s American stage debut. Mike and Nick have previously worked together on Nick’s most recent play, the critically acclaimed Constellations, which enjoyed a sell-out run at the Royal Court Upstairs in January 2012.

  1. Jake was a trending topic, not sure if it was for this news or TDAT, which was also trending.

A good day for Jake fans :)

  2. It's funny that this plot bears a slight resemblance to the movie Jake was rumored for, which also involved a Payne. And Jake went to see Constellations when he was in London for the video shoot, didn't he?

    also, the tweets are funny:

No joke, just booked a hotel room.

  5. OK. Here's is my live chat with the Roundabout Ticket office:

LindsayH.: Hello. How may I assist you?

you: When Can I buy tickets for the Jake Gyllenhaal play?

Lindsay H.: As of right now that show is restricted to 5-play or 7-play subscribers. Tickets for If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet are not on sale, and we do not have a date announced as of yet when those will be on sale.

Lindsay H.: Since the show will begin in the fall, I would check back sometime during the summer when we should have more information about ticket sales for If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.

you: *So subscribers have first choice, but at some point the general public will be able to purchase tickets?

    Lindsay H.: Yes.

    you: OK Thanks.

Lindsay H.: Is there anything else I can help you with today?

you: Not right now. Later for sure. Thanks. I'll be back :

This is fantastic news and I would love to see it, his part sounds intriguing!

We have to do get together to see it: Mary, Chica, Bobbyanna, UV,????

  10. Do they have group discounts? :)

Bobbyanna, I wonder how many calls like that the Roundabout has gotten today.

And Gyllencrazy, LOL. You can be the "audience in residence."

    From twitter, lol:

is insisting on accompanying me to any show involving Jake Gyllenhaal. To "keep an eye on" me. Probably a good call.

  11. UV, I wonder if that twitter was from my daughter!!! LOL!

Hey I'd love to see it with you guys! I didn't realize how much I'd been hoping for some good news from Jake! I'm ridiculously happy for him & for us!

  13. It would be fun Bobbyanna if a froup of us could get together and go see Jake in the play and then we could all go see EOW which opens sept 28 and as the play starrts the 24:)

  14. Mary, that would be a great Jake day!

It is apparently a 13-week run, ending 11/25. I think I missed that in the initial excitement.

  18. I'm just sat here thinking how I can fit this in. I'm going to Toronto which is not so far away... but going to Cuba on 15th from there. I'm hearing conflicting information on the dates of the play. Is it September, October or November?

  19. Thinking about myself and not Jake's accomplishment. Thank you UV for bringing us this hot-off-the-press fabulous news. How fantastic that he has scored himself a fabulous gig - on Broadway no less. What a marvelous opportunity for our guy to show his range and have the perfect platform to improv and fine-tune his performances. I bet no two nights will never have the same performance. Jake on Broadway. How wonderful.

  20. Sheba I think the play opens to the public on Sept 20 according to reports.

if that tweet is a true sighting of Jake being in London then maybe he is there for Marcus and Careys wedding and he woont be in LA on Friday guess we will find out soon.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If it will make you feel better for possibly not being able to go, Sheba, it's actually not a Broadway play.

    I know, the doesn't help.

I think you can do it. Toronto -> New York, then on to Cuba. You're going south :)

We'll have to see if Jake goes to the luncheon or the wedding or both or neither!

    ReplyDelete
  22. If there is a wedding, of course.

  23. I love the fact that he was trending, this is a fantastic day for all Jake fans! I'm thrilled that he is doing this play, I really want to go and I plan to. We should all realyl organize and get together to see it!

I would love to see him on stage, the play runs from Sept. - Nov., I will have to see if I can make to NY to see it.

  32. Such great news, it's gone be a busy year for Jake after all!

I'm slightly jealous of all you lucky ones that can watch Jake on stage, but i'm counting on you to tell the rest of the unfortunate ones all the details.

Speaking of EOW isn't about time to release the trailer?

  40. Aha that Shebanubi tweeter was mine. They were doing something on Madonna and the show asked people to call in, text email or tweet about your experience of meeting a famous person. As twitter had 40 character restriction I couldn't add that I met him two years ago. Y'all know what happened there *blush* :D still having problems posting replys in blogger but thanks Mary. So frustrating. Anyhoo still working on my north American tour. Broadway would've been wonderful UV but let's face it I would come to see Jake perform in a barn because I know and don't know what I'm gonna get :D

    Boots = pharmacy

    ReplyDelete
  42. Taunton? So Carey & Marcus are in the West Country. : )

Google is your friend. I've checked out the city, and there's St. Mary Magdalen's church, and also a lovely Hotel and Spa just outside town that does elegant wedings. Of course I know nothing, for all I know they went for a civil ceremony and out to lunch. : )

But looking at photos of Taunton and the surroundings it gives me am idea of what their day may be like.

I smiled when I read the tweet about Jake visiting a pharmacy this morning, after a night at the pub.

  43. Sounds like a nice place to get married reports said that they were going to get married in the English country side

    ReplyDelete
  44. According to The Sun ( British tabloid) Adele is also at the wedding, and will be singing for Carey & Marcus. The Sun also said the ceremony would be a religious ceremony. But since it's The Sun, who knows! : )

I am SO cold! It's in the 30's outside. Really cold. : (

    ReplyDelete
  45. Us Weekly says Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Firth, and Sienna Miller were at the wedding but doesn't mention Adele. Us Weekly says they got married at a farm.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Still no photos, but this story has some details on the wedding.

From twitter, just some fun stuff from Taunton:

He had an awesome beard going on!

no doubt. I've always admired his hairfaceability. What's he doin here?

    And FB:

Was it actually Jake Gyllenhaal I saw in Taunton high street?

omg! yes! i work in Holland n barrett in taunton and yes he was in taunton as he came into the shop :D

Thank god im not the only one, everyone was taking the piss out of me at work when i said i swear i saw him!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks, UV. The Mail article was much better than the Us Weekly one.
I once went to a wedding in a barn on a farm... but not nearly so posh. In fact it was sort of a pot luck wedding if I recall. : )

OT but not: Henry Louis Gates has a TV program on PBS about tracing your ancestors. Tomorrow, he will be sitting down with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr.
The show airs @ 8 PM, so it won't interfere if people like to watch Mad Men, The Killing, or Game of Thrones. ;)

  52. Jake and Maggie are kind of underachievers in that family legacy! The grandmother was very impressive. And LOL at the Bush connection.

    Loved the Cape Cod roots.
