Roles for which Jake Gyllenhaal should have won an Oscar. But didn't.

Time marches on. Today and this evening (because the whole overblown, self-congratulatory event lasts about 20 hours it seems) is the 80th Annual Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. This year's Awards holds no interest for me other than tuning in to see who's wearing what...or who.

All indications are that Jake Gyllenhaal won't be at the event tonight, but that doesn't stop us from having our own Oscars, Gyllenhaal stylie.

Best Performance in the Younger Actor category:

And the winner is. . . Jake Gyllenhaal for his role as Danny Robbins in City Slickers!!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Bubble

And the winner is. . . Jake Gyllenhaal for his role as Jimmy Livingston in Bubble Boy!!

Best Stoner Performance by an Actor

And the winner is. . . Jake Gyllenhaal for his role as Pilot Kelson in Highway.

Best Actor as the Love Interest for Older Actresses

The nominees are:

Jake Gyllenhaal for Lovely & Amazing

Jake Gyllenhaal for The Good Girl

Jake Gyllenhaal for Proof

Jake Gyllenhaal for Moonlight Mile

And the winner, by a landslide, is Jake Gyllenhaal!!

Enjoy your Sunday evening at the Oscars, everyone!

  1. Awesome Jake moments, FL! He should have won the Oscar for sure! Off to watch the Oscar Pre-show. Have a nice Oscar night everyone. No Jake or Reese but maybe we will here something of them at the private parties or after events.

  2. Hee, I love this post. Oscar worthy performances, all!

Also from the last post, I echo suveee's lament about Jake and Reese's lack of red carpet photo ops. Yeah, yeah, yeah, she was sick, okay, so she had to stay home last night. And we wouldn't have gotten pictures anyway. But I want to see them together, dressed to the nines, damn it. And I want them attending events like last night's together.

    Someday :)

  3. Page Six on the averted Brangelina/Jennifer A showdown at the party last night. Another mention of Jake's being there, but nothing more on him or Reese.

  4. I agree with you UV and Suvee, that we need to see Jake and Reese together on the red carpet! Someone needs to make that happen, pronto! ;)

Thanks for the Page Six story, UV.

Anway, I posted this in the last thread, but just in case anyone missed it:

Thanks to JSRocks at IHJ for this interesting info on the chaotic goings on of some Broadway productions including Jake and "Farragut North" and why it isn't happening with him or Mike Nichols.

  5. Happy Oscar watching babblers!!

Love the post, and Jake sure had a lot of "mature" leading ladies, LOL!!

  6. Get real, I saw that NYTimes story and thought "exciting stars" is not the same thing as Jake Gyllenhaal, baby.

I hope Jake does Broadway eventually. And sooner rather than later!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Whoa, that was an upset! I never thought that Tilda would win for for supporting actress, I had either Blanchette or Dee.

    ReplyDelete
  8. LOL, Felicia.

    Pilot! God what a cutie.:)

I'm so glad Jake won in every category.

  9. And all the office Oscar pools are offically screwed, Marion Cotiliard wins for best actress!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I know, sheba! It's fun to have some surprises, though I actually hated Tilda Swinton in MC. Entirely to tic-y for me.

Somehow, I managed not to look when Crash, I assume, came up in the montage of Best Picture winners. That wound is still fresh.

Also, that 98-year old man? Very impressive.

  11. Yay Robert Elswit won for TWBB!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yay, Jake's godfather. Clearly, Elswit was aided by the GyllenBabble post done last month!

  13. He must have been UV. :)

I was surprised at the Tilda Swinton win. I was expecting Cate or Ruby Dee. Tilda was very good in MC and is an excellent actress, but I wanted either Cate or Ruby. I loved Javier winning and Marion was a tour de force in LVER. Her speech was very touching. Ugh at Crash being in that BP tribute. Thrilled that Once won and that they let her come back and give her speech. Woohoo Robert Elswit! And can't believe Heath was at the end of that Memorial Tribute. Just not right. :(

Btw, UV I agree about "some exciting stars" is definitely not Jake G. I do really have fingers and toes crossed that he will soon do a Broadway play.

  14. DDL won for best actor!

  15. No Country For Old Men won!!!

  16. I doubt Reese will be at any after parties.

She has to work tomorrow to make up for her sick day. Jake may go out though. I can picture him watching the telecast at Reese's house and leaving --- just about now --- to hit up some parties.

  17. Now this is my kinda oscars!

  18. Hi everyone,

Hey there, I absolutely love your Jake Oscar worthy performances.

What a Oscars! Go Jake's Godfather/? This should bring him even more work if that's possible.

I thought Marion Cotillard might win since the middle of January, because her name and comments about her awesome performance showed up in the papers more and more, she won a Bafta and her performance blew me away.

Tilda Swinton was an upset, but OK by me, because her performance was complex and powerful.
She's a arresting actor, her sense of humor a pleasant surprise and I am beginning to love her original fashion sense.

Jon Stewart was so much better than he was last time.

Please someone link me to the Reese/Jake PopSugar poll.
    see ya later.

  21. BTW, Jake and Reese tied Brad and Angelina at 33% in that poll.

The only couple on that poll that did the Red carpet was George and his GF, Jennifer Garner came w/o Ben, Jake/Reese, Brad/Angie/Will/Jada were no shows and Javier and Penelope came seperately.

  22. The Oscars were kind of ...flat, to me. Jon Stewart was pretty good, but it just seemed kind of besides the point, I guess. I thought the musical production numbers which were cheesey and horrific!

And of course I felt they were dismissive of Heath who barely got two seconds at the end of their remembrance segment. They didn't even include Brad Renfro, so I guess we should be grateful!

Colin Farrell was interviewed on the red carpet and spoke well of Heath, and was honored to do the film for him, "so we can get his work seen..." (Colin's mother is a cutie!)

I was delighted Marion Cotillard won! Her Edith Piaf was astonishing. Tilda Swinton was a surprise. Tilda is a very good actress, but I didn't think her role in MC was that demanding.I wish it had been Cate. My second choice would have been Ruby Dee.
DDL and Xavier Bardem were expected and I was pleased they won.

OMG!Ben Affleck was not there! How curious! There were a lot of familiar faces missing besides Jake and Reese. No Charlize,Matt Damon, Orlando or Natalie, no Scarlett Johanssen,Jamie Fox or Terrence Howard, Emile Hirsh or Ryan Gosling. Robert Downey Jr. would have been fun.(I thought Bourne should have gotten a BP nomination.) It just seemed like an older crowd. (Why in the world was The Rock a presenter! I don't dislike him but still... And Miley Cyrus???PLZ!)

Jack Nicholson, who can be a brilliant actor, is getting on my nerves. The closing moments of the 8 -8:30 segment, on ABC, Regis Philbin walked into the auditorium from backstag to say hi,and Jack started making comments about The Joker, turned to Tommy Lee Jones sitting behind him shouting,".. see, everyone's here, here's my Harvey! Regis ignored him...thank god!

I did enjoy the "fashion show." I thought Laura Linney looked beautiful, Jennifer Garner and Pennelope Cruz too. I'm undecided about that bright red, but the Grey's Anatomy girl pulled it off.
I like Helen Mirren's gown. At first I didn't but the more I saw it, I decided I liked it. Is it me, or does Rene Zellweger seem odd? I enjoyed some of the tapes of previous Oscars. Especially Cher's outfits!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Is it me, or does Rene Zellweger seem odd?

No, it's not just you, she also does that strange pouty mouth thing that Daniel Craig does, extremely irritating.

Didn't see any of the Oscars last night, mainly down to getting very, very, very drunk celebrating the mighty Spurs win in the cup yesterday (I fear there was both singing and dancing :o ) - my head is very poorly today :(

I haven't seen MC, but was really pleased to see Tilda win, as she's not only a very good actress, but also very unique, marches to her own beat completely :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. Another great post FL, didn't watch the oscars don't really feel the need to, there was no-one there I was interested in (except George).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Congrats on the Spurs win yesterday AK, my son is a spurs fanatic.

  26. Forgot to mention how pretty Ann Hathaway looked in red.

  27. Steph, the Magnificent, has just posted a small scan of Jake with David Arquetta (rubbish spelling sorry, major hangover) at IheartJake from the Night Before party - got to say it's not a good photo of Jake, possibly looks a bit tired.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sorry. Not trying to spam! I think Tilda Swinton is a fine actress, too. She did an excellent job with Michael Clayton. I just didn't think her role was that demanding, but it could just be me. And her dress was THE big fashion atrocity of the evening. It looked scarey!

When I saw American Gangster, Ruby sort of evolved during the film. You could watch her, and you got a real sense she knew, like watching a timebomb ticking. Her "speech" in that climactic scene, was very powerful.By then, Denzel's character was SO powerful, only his momma dared treat him that way. Ruby is also an historical figure, and her body of work should get acknowledgement at some point. She is brilliant and has done great stage work, too. This was her first nomination.
And of course Cate was brilliant in a very edgy role.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, Jake doesn't look to great in that picture from the party, I wonder if he picked up the flu from Reese.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for the heads up on the Jake pic at IHJ! Actually I think Jake looks okay, even if he is tired or sick, compared to David A. I like David but he doesn't look that great. Glad to see a pic from the event though!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wow! News of the Jake!Scan didn't show on my 'puter. Now it is tho.He does look kinda tired. Maybe he, too, is "flu-ish."
FL I really love this post. I just finished watching Pilot...again. He was just deliciously dear!

  32. Afternoon everyone,
I'm still on an Oscar high. Glad to be here among Jake fans. I'm falling in love with Tilda Swinton's original style. I think the NY Times doesn't agree with my assessment. I do hope she doesn't change too drastically with stylists and such, and end up looking like everyone else.

bobbyanna, I don't think they snubbed Brad Renfro; they only acknowledge members of their club, members of the Academy and Brad was not a member.

I'm sure Jennifer is still washing her neck, after that horrible grope and kiss from Gary Busey. How totally revolting for her. She and Ben may change their standard practice, of walking the red carpet alone after this incident. I heard her out loud response to Ryan Seacrest after it happened; where are you Ben?

I leave you all with a blown up picture of sad-eyed Jake thanks to Stephanie until we can get a better copy.

Jake's sad-eyed charity event pic thanks to Stephanie

    ReplyDelete
  33. He doesn't look sad-eyed to me.

On the other hand hasn't he always had the tag of looking sad-eyed, like sad cow eyes or something, all his life?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, Jake looks a bit sad-eyed, tired there.

I'm with you sass, I love Tilda's style and was thrilled with her win last night.

    Gary Busey is nuts.

It was hard to watch that tribute last night with Heath at the end. I can't believe it's been over a month that he has been gone.

OT: Ralph Nadar: PLEASE GO AWAY!

  35. Speaking of unhappy sad eyes...

Your fans seem to worry that you're not happy. Are you happy?
That's really sweet, actually — it's really nice. I would say, "Stop worrying about me and ask yourself."

Perhaps they just get this melancholic vibe from you ...
I can be melancholy but I also feel a grand spectrum of feelings — not just happy, not just melancholy, not just one thing. I'm pretty aware all the time of my feelings.

  38. Ninesy,

I think that was an old interview of Jake. Like 2006 old.

I could be wrong though. I know a lot of these gossip sites/celebrities sites just reprint old interviews and pass them off as new.

He was talking about hanging out with Lance and Matt in the summer. He hung out with them almost two summers ago.

Also the questions that were asked were the kind of questions he was asked two years ago.

He mentioned his parents celebrating their 30th anniversary. They celebrated it two years ago.

The more I think about it, the older the interview seems.

    ReplyDelete
  39. He didn't look sick in that photo at all really. Maybe a tad tired. Maybe the flash was bright. Other than that I thought he looked okay.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just wanted to mention that an AMPAS spokesperson officially reacted to the criticism of the omission of Brad Renfro from the rememberance segment. Said there "was no reason" for it. It just happened. It was caused by an "editing problem...you just can't include everyone..." Just when I flirt with the remote possibility that maybe they aren't as bad as they've seemed in the past, AMPAS has to go and do something special to remind me of just how they are.

    ReplyDelete
  41. OMG, bobbyanna TY. I am so sorry for my misinformation everyone.
What do I know anyway...not much.

Forgive the "mother" Jake remarks too,
    *smile*
maybe I'm the sad one; I am the sad one.

"E" channel's red carpet coverage is on all day long.
I hope we get to see Jake on the carpet again, with a big smile on his face and his love by his side.

    ReplyDelete
  42. More Brad Renfro...I come online up to this discussion everywhere.

But MTV News has learned that he was not an invited member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars. In the end, that might have been a contributing factor to his exclusion from the montage, the spokeswoman admitted.

"We try to represent people — not just actors and actresses — but people who have contributed to film in a variety of different ways," she said. "But [being an Academy member] is certainly one of the considerations that's taken into account, though not exclusively."

Although edited by one individual, "A number of people are in the decision-making chain about who might be included" in the montage, the spokeswoman said.

    TY again bobbyanna.

'We're just not able to include everyone,' a spokeswoman says of the late actor's omission

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well, as was pointed out about Heath in the Remembrance segment:
" blink and you would have missed him..." And he WAS a member of the Academy, as well as a former nominee! Gosh, that's a great group of people at that damned "Academy." Wow. Stellar group of folks. All heart.

Have I said how much I love Colin Farrell? Not the same as Jake, but still...
