Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 68th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Jake Gyllenhaal is a member of the festival's jury. They gathered for a pre-festival meal at the Hotel Martinez on Tuesday evening.
Jake is pictured above with Thierry Frémaux, the festival director. Below, greeting Spanish actress Rossy De Palm, then British actress Sienna Miller, with director Guillermo del Toro (and one of the Coen brothers, I think) also in the frame.

I'm loving all these pictures and video from Cannes. It will be fun to watch. Being on the jury means we'll get to see a lot of Jake got the next ten days. : )
With all due respect, I don't understand the doubts (honest question). Naomi is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter after all. Not sure about her directing skills, but writing is her job. I also know that Dan Gilroy penned the crappy Real Steel, yet Nightcrawler script was fantastic, as passion projects usually are. "Snow" story is already written, she's polishing it, working on the dialog or characterization maybe, who knows?

I'm glad to see Jake in Cannes again, even happier that he's a jury member. He will have more exposure than the stars with movies in competition, they get 2 days of press, then the focus shifts to the next one. What I love about Cannes is this unique combination of glitz, glam, frenzy, art films and crappy ones, booing and clapping, scandal and outrage.
The opening/closing ceremonies are televised and streamed and I believe the jury press conferences are too (they end up on youtube).

There's a nice picture of Jake hugging Sienna. These first meetings must feel a little awkward even for people like them, so it's a blessing seeing a friend. I noticed that Xavier, for all his no filter, free speech nature, is actually shy.
It's a good thing Jake has beautiful features, nice hair and great body, because that suit hurt my eyes. I mean, the colour was...erm...perfect for Adam in Enemy. He still looks handsome and sexy in that suit, with the grisly beard.
Still hope he will wear a perfect tux (paging Tom Ford!) and let the french stylists...style him a bit for tomorrow's gala.
So glad to see Jake at Cannes again . I like the suit my son has some crazy colored suits he loves to dress up .

ReplyDeleteI don't mind the suit at all. It's just his first night, mostly just meeting up with fellow jurors, and festival officials, for orientation.
Jake looks great in a tux! So yeas, really looking forward to seeing a lot of him, too. While I don't mind his suit, I have very mixed feelings about his hair. : /
Yeah, everything points out to Naomi being an intelligent, eloquent professional. True Detective's Cary Fukunaga, one of her former students, still asks for her advice.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she has knowledge on the subject matter, and writing for her son's movie could make it a passion project. We don't know anything else than this little piece of information.
To me the hair is great, the styling was off, I think he "styled" it himself. Ironically, same hair looked better a week ago at the boxing match. Go figure! Lets hope he will let professionals style and dress him tomorrow. Sorry for the nitpicking, it's all in good faith.

I have mixed feelings about Naomi, too. She has one Oscar nom in 1988 what looks for me more like a illumination in otherwise average writing career. The last script was in 2013 after 7 years not writing anything. So we can expect other illumination after almost 30 years or another below average scenario. Not saying of her focus on relationships between parents and children in small movies. So I am curious now. SV

ReplyDeleteThat happens all the time, however it's not usually done by the mother of the lead actor. A lot of people already don't seem to have much faith in Fuqua pulling off (I do) the book to film. This doesn't help.

It's not a put down or an attack, just unusual from a very private Jake even in a hotel room.

Why get so distracted with silly small things? Jake is getting ready for the red carpet at Cannes, the premiere film festival. He is representing the United States on the jury, (Joel & Ethan, as co-presidents are not). It is a very exciting moment, as he dons his tuxedo, straightens his tie, ready to take the stage!
It's a beautiful photo, full of anticipation. It captures the moment,the excitement very nicely.
I'd appreciate another selfie how he puts perfume on, in one article journalist said he smells godly, any idea about the brand? SV

ReplyDeleteYou know, it wasn't until I looked at it a second time that I was like "oh a glimpse into Jake's hotel room" Lol Definitely not something you see from him all the time but it is nice to see nonetheless. I think I prefer a small glimpse like this over Jake having his own social media accounts and posting all the time. I like that he isn't active in that world.
Found some nice photos of Naomi Watts & Julianne Moore on the red Carpet tonight at Cannes. Natalie Portman and her husband also walked the red carpet. Natalie has a film in competition. The photos of Jake on stage at the opening ceremony are just stunning.

Jake is looking devastatingly handsome IMO. I'm looking forward to the jury press conference video. It's also nice to see him looking so relaxed and like he's having a good time. From now on until closing day, members of the jury are forbidden to give cinema related interviews. Silenzio stampa. It's not clear to me if Jake will be allowed to talk to the press (about things unrelated to movies) at the AMFAR gala.
Wow. I Didn't realize that Jake is one of the chairs of the AmFar Gala on May 21st, along with Harvey Wienstein and a dozen other people including Isabella Rosseilini and Frances McDormand. Go Jake!

ReplyDeleteThe Cannes site is pretty good about uploading these things. And the youtube channel has English versions of some of their videos, which is very nice for those of us whose French is merely passable. Or nonexistent.
I heard the announcer say that they are not allowed to discuss the movies with the press and I wondered the same thing, HM. Would seem odd not to be able to talk at all, but I bet Jake wouldn't mind that.
