Ready, set, promo

Jake Gyllenhaal begins promotion for Prisoners, due out September 20. First up, a visit to the Late Show with David Letterman.

Video of Letterman interview:

Jake will travel to Toronto this weekend for the Toronto International Film Festival, then to Los Angeles next week for appearances on Jimmy Kimmel and the Queen Latifah show. Then it's off to Spain.

New stills:

Probably won't stay at this level, but let's enjoy:

  5. This is the part where news start piling up fast and furious – not complaining one bit. Looking forward to this cause it feels like such a long time since we've seen Jake on talkshows, a year. He looks so good in suits. The shoes are Jake's oldtime friends by now, you don't abandon your friends :-)

Mary – here: it will tape September 12 at 4:30 PM in LA.

UltraViolet – I was puzzled by the fact that Jake is the second guest on Jimmy Kimmel. Until I saw that Hugh is a guest on Jay Leno the same day, 9/12.
I think it's arranged that when Hugh's taped segment on The Tonight Show ends, Jake's taped segment on Jimmy Kimmel starts. US fans just need to switch from NBC to ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I mean WME made the arrangement so that Hugh's and Jake's interviews won't air at the same time on 2 different networks.

  7. Love all the Jake news lately!!

He was also at Seth Myers wedding this weekend on MV. :)

  15. Jake quoted in a story about TIFF:

Every best picture winner since 2007 has played at the Toronto International Film Festival, from "No Country for Old Men" to last year’s winner, "Argo." While other late summer festivals like Telluride can claim to have been first with many Oscar winners, Toronto is the largest, most expansive launch pad of the fall movie-going season...

"It’s like the major leagues. That’s how it feels," says Gyllenhaal, who’s also premiering another film with "Prisoners" director Denis Villeneuve, the experimental Jose Saramago adaptation "Enemy." "It’s so big that it’s hard to have perspective."

I caught the interview last night. He was funny and charming ad usual, the dart story was a hoot!

  18. Agree, OONP! (waves) The other actor in that clip looked familiar to me, and then I realized he was the mental patient in the Batman movie, who the Joker used, dressed as a cop. At least I think that was him. I know I've seen him before.

UV, these fan photos are great. Love Jake's expression when they hand him something to sign.

Listening to his dart story, I bet he was a little hellraiser when he was a kid. Never a dull moment. I have a younger brother like that. Many visits to the ER. : )

  22. Total Film gives us the official UK poster for "Prisoners". Looks like the Brits came up with a better poster than the original one.

While Letterman isn't the most riveting tv host, Jake was his usual sweet, playful self. After all these years in the business, he's still unassuming, unpretentious. One of the things I like the most about him is how he always talks about his family. They may not talk as much about him, but Jake – the most famous one – never fails to show his loyalty and love.

UltraViolet – That's what I think about Kimmel/Leno schedule but I may be wrong. In any case, September 12 is shaping up as the busiest day: Jake will tape 2 shows – Queen Latifah and Jimmy Kimmel; Hugh will tape one – Leno; then both will attend the Hollywood premiere at 6:30 PM!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Forgot to add: I'm waiting for news of Jake @ Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, maybe Anderson or Conan. They all have a great banter with Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Looks like the Brits came up with a better poster than the original one.

    It doesn't convince me either.

The Wrap: ‘Prisoners’ Director Denis Villeneuve, Alcon Sign 2-Year Overall Deal

That deal could affect Jake, too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hagen – If Jake and Denis intend to do more films together (I think they do) it certainly will, in a good way. Success has a snowball effect, so we can also expect good offers for Jake outside the Alcon-Villeneuve new venture. I'm thinking Warner Bros.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, the posters are not great. Not sure why they couldn't come up with something better.

Interesting news for Denis Villeneuve. I'd love to see Jake get some kind of a production deal with a major player.

Translator, do we know Jake is going on second or was his name just listed after Dianna Agron's?

As for other appearances, most shows don't have their lineups out for next week yet. I'm going to guess Jake won't do Ellen, since he's doing Queen Latifah's show. (I assume they are rivals.)

I saw that Queen L is asking fans to bring their used glasses to donate to New Eyes, which is cool.

    ReplyDelete
  27. UltraViolet – Jake's name is listed second. Don't know what will happen when it airs but I can't imagine Warner/WME being ok with Jake and Hugh's promotional interviews overlapping. Doesn't seem like good business.

I guess Q. Latifah will be Ellen's competition. I also think Jake's interview will be longer than 10 minutes, with the producers looking to fill the seats with Gyllenhaalics and taking into consideration his favorite charity. It's the reason I'm wondering how will Jake be able to tape this longer show, Kimmel's show at 4:30 PM and be ready and dandy for the red carpet at 6:30 PM. Putting his superhuman powers at work? :-)

And more news: MTV's correspondent Josh Horowitz tweeted:

  35. An impressive US debut for French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, dramatic thriller Prisoners is a potent mix of suspense, emotion and intrigue that draws intense performances from leads Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Villeneuve lets the tension build slowly and organically, using most of his screen time to look at how the relationships change as the clock ticks on the search for the missing girls.

not hilarious. Zodiac via Nancy Grace, overwrought morality play squeezes a miniseries into a film. absorbing & ridiculous in equal measure (and in that order). the problem with a film that is in part about resolution (and the impossibility thereof) is that when it tries to tie up all of its loose ends, well... it feels as though it wasn't paying attention. gotta love how villeneuve has a compulsion to insert a radiohead song, however faintly and out of place, into his stuff.

10/10 review. (This is the guy who made the Seven comparison.)

I didn't read - I skimmed, so it may be spoiler:

REVIEW: If all you know about Denis Villeneuve's PRISONERS is based on the trailers, you don't know much about it at all. Don't worry though, that's just the way it should be. Having just played to rave reviews at Telluride, and all but sure to do the same thing at TIFF, you'll be reading and hearing lots and lots about the film between now and it's general release on September 20th. And when the public gets to see it opening day, wow, just you wait. This will be THE water-cooler movie of the fall, and the one everyone's going to have an opinion about.

I was lucky in that I got to see it knowing very little about the film other than that which I got from the first preview, which, I must say was rather ingeniously done as it gives away virtually nothing that happens outside the first forty minutes of the lengthy two and a half hour running time. Rest assured, I'm not going to be the jerk that spoils the movie, so if this review comes off a little vague, it's only to avoid ruining any of the film's surprises, which kept me on the edge of my seat through the entire running time.

In fact, as soon as I walked out of PRISONERS, I emailed my editor here to tell him “PRISONERS makes SE7EN look like BLAZING SADDLES.” I don't mean that PRISONERS is as violent as Fincher's masterpiece, but it's similarly disturbing, perhaps even more so in that it's a film about adults hurting children, which is without a doubt the most heinous crime imaginable. In fact, PRISONERS isn't terribly gruesome, but on an emotional level it's nothing short of devastating. When it was over, I felt like going somewhere to cry for half an hour, as that's how drained I was by it's power. It exposes us to an evil that's terrifying simply due to the fact that it's so real.

As the second lead, Jake Gyllenhaal makes an interesting contrast. A young cop with a chip on his shoulder, Gyllenhaal is everything Jackman's not in this, from the tattoos on his neck and fingers, to his often cool, but compassionate demeanour. Between this and END OF WATCH, Gyllenhaal's starting to excel at playing cops, and while he initially takes a back seat to Jackman (who's clearly relishing the role of his life), he ends up giving a performance that's just as gripping as Jackman's
I really can't praise PRISONERS highly enough, as to me it feels like some kind of masterpiece. It's without a doubt the best movie I've seen this year, and I'd be gobsmacked if anything else plays at TIFF (or heck, even comes out this year) that measures up to it. To me, the ultimate key to a movie's success is how much of an effect it had on me emotionally. This one left me a wreck, and will likely do the same to even the most jaded viewer.

‘Prisoners’ Review: Jake Gyllenhaal and Roger Deakins Will Hold You Spellbound http://dlvr.it/3w7PVm

Performance-wise, Prisoners is entirely the Jake Gyllenhaal show. While Jackman’s Keller Dover is surely meant to be the most complex character to populate Prisoners (well, at least for most of the film), the one kitted out with motives and backstory and grief to spare, it’s Detective Loki who is the most compelling and watchable. Gyllenhaal’s timing and tone are unwavering, making Jackman’s more outsized and nearly-hammy flourishes seem all the more jarring. Supporting stars like Howard, Davis, and Bello are underutilized and given little to do, and all three are essentially unchanged throughout the film. Dano also comes out strong before being boxed in by what Villeneuve is trying to establish with his character, a far more forgivable misstep when it comes to what the film metes out to its very talented cast. - See more at: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/film-festivals/prisoners-review.php?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=rejectnation#sthash.AsYo6diS.dpuf

  59. Another rave:

I was trapped in a movie called Prisoners yesterday, and like a good book that you can’t put down, it was a place I didn’t want to leave. This intense thriller is one of two TIFF entries that mark Denis Villeneuve’s double-barrelled English language debut—both starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The other is Enemy. While Enemy is a small Canadian film set in the existential wastelands of Toronto and Mississauga, Prisoners is a studio picture set in America’s heartland. It arrives at TIFF on a wave of positive momentum from the Venice festival. And it catapults Quebec’s hottest director into the major league of Hollywood directors. It’s an exceptionally dark and harrowing story about the abduction of two young girls—a grisly suspense picture that verges on horror. Gyllenhaal gives the performance of his career as a laconic, tight-wound police detective trying to crack the case; the same can be said of Hugh Jackman, who is scarily explosive as a father who abducts a mentally handicapped man initially linked to his daughter’s disappearance (Paul Dano). We are deep in David Fincher territory. As a genre clinician, Villeneuve shows he’s in Fincher’s class, yet achieves a more profound level of intimacy and gravitas. As a diabolical genre piece, his film recalls Silence of the Lambs and Fincher’s Zodiac. But its stark, wintry compositions also remind us that this is the director who dramatized the Montreal massacre in Polytechnique (2009). Occasionally I got lost in the labyrinthine plot twists, but at almost two-and-a-half hours there’s not an ounce of fat on its gripping narrative. From the opening scene of hunting venison for Thanksgiving—an grim echo of The Deerhunter set to the Lord’s Prayer—it begins a procedural descent into an American darkness of unquestioning faith and almost biblical violence. And if there’s any justice in that America, Villeneuve, who was Oscar-nominated for Incendies, should see his film score in major categories. A nomination for Jackman at least seems inevitable.
