ReplyDeleteJane McNeill (nurse), Katrina Despain (as Kim Milland), Kyla Drew Simmons (Joy Birch), Fred Griffith (Groggy Man) and Jeff Pope (Scott Milland) have been added to the cast of "Prisoners".
Apparently Kyla Drew Simmons will play the daughter of Viola Davis' character, one of the two girls who are kidnapped. Just a reminder of the plot (Lily already posted that link): "In the rural New England town of Brockton, Massachusetts, neighbors and friends the Dovers and the Birches gather for Thanksgiving dinner, but by the end of the night, their celebration turns to panic when the families' two youngest daughters go missing. As the hours pass and the girls don't turn up, it becomes terrifyingly apparent they've been kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) decides to take the law into his own hands, running up against dedicated Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal). But even as Loki is diligently working against the clock to solve the case, Keller will stop at nothing to get their prime suspect to talk before it's too late."

Remember the (half)joke Dave Poland made in his interview with Jake? That the most interesting part starts at the end of any interview? It holds true for the second clip: at the last minute, when the girl asked him about Die Antwoord, that's when Jake was thrilled to have a conversation!
And the Extra clip could've been good if not for the dreadful taser question.
If only the reporters would ask more original questions, they would get more enthusiastic answers...

I believe Jake thrives in this kind of work environment: freedom to improvise (remember EoW?) + friendly creative collaboration between actors and director. It becomes more and more clear why he chose to make 2 movies back to back with Denis Villeneuve. He might be exactly the kind of "likemind" director Jake was talking about in his interview with Dave Poland (and we know how important this meeting of likeminds is for an actor: DiCaprio-Scorsese, Bale-Nolan, Clooney-Soderbergh etc).

I guess especially in improvised scenes it's important that the actors have a clear idea about the movie. It's certainly an interesting project, but right now I'm a bit skeptic.

ReplyDeleteNot that odd really. Most films are shot out of order and in this film she's only playing off one of Jake's characters while Melanie Laurent is playing off the other Jake character. So basically she only knows 50% of the film.

ReplyDeleteI'm one who doesn't find it odd at all, and I think Rachel has an excellent point. My reasons are:
1. Maybe Sarah Gadon doesn't particularly like improvisation, this being the reason for her slight confusion. She might prefer to be directed in precise details (Fincher's style). Hence my comparison to Jake, who loves improv and is always eager to change something (tone, perspective, even words) from one take to another. If this is Villeneuve's directorial style, they had a meeting of the minds.
2. The movie itself seems to be an unconventional complicated story told in an unconventional complicated way.
In a Spanish article, Jake was quoted saying: "Sin duda, Γ©sta es una de las pelΓculas mΓ‘s complejas y extraΓ±as en las que he trabajado durante mi carrera, ya que muestra el fascinante viaje dentro de un mundo que sΓ³lo Saramago podΓa crear, por lo que serΓ‘ una experiencia cinematogrΓ‘fica ΓΊnica y alucinante".
Thanks to Google translator, I gather it was one of the most complex and bizarre movies he's ever done, a fascinating journey into a world that only Saramago could create, an unique and mind-bending cinematic experience.
Remember that Jake was in every scene, he kept in touch with Villeneuve throughout the post-production process (due to their upcoming project), and probably has seen at least a rough copy of the movie. All the other actors might be in the dark just as Sarah Gadon.
On my part, I'm intrigued and hopeful.

ReplyDeleteWith all due respect to Sarah, she is an actor not the storyteller and I think maybe the only reason that Jake may have some idea as to the tone of the movie is that Jake loves to immerse himself into all aspects of a film if the storyteller (director) lets him. And it seems as if Jake attached himself to the hip of Denis during the movie on and off set.
Thanks for the interesting discussion. Sarah might also be exaggerating for effect. Actors have been known to do that :)

ReplyDeleteLaure, Jake explicitly said in an interview that he and Sarah Gadon have a similar approach to acting. Maybe UV is right and Sarah Gadon is just showing off her ignorance.
On my part, I'm intrigued and hopeful.
I like the story quite a lot. It's not completely bizarre and makes more sense than "Donnie Darko" or "Source Code". I'm just not sure what to think of Denis Villeneuve as a director. Anyway we just have to wait and watch the result. :)

ReplyDeleteAll these ideas are well-thought-out, and if Jake and Sarah are kindred spirits in terms of acting, it's more likely that UV is right: actors, directors, artists in general have been known to exaggerate (David Ayer for example, when he said Jake was "sick of his life", was heavily exaggerating, IMO. But this is a conversation for another time).
Scott is also right: Jake's interest in all the aspects of a movie makes him an unusual actor. His focus goes beyond acting and he thinks like a filmmaker (another conversation for another time).
I never said the story is bizarre, I said it's unconventional and that the movie seems to be told this way.
Jake used (if he wasn't misquoted) "bizarre" and "mind-bending" in his description of the film. It could happen that Villeneuve's project is a free adaptation, a more "hallucinatory" vision. I guess we'll find out next year.
I haven't seen Incendies, therefore I don't know anything about Villeneuve as a director.
Personally, along with Brokeback and Jarhead, Donnie Darko and Source Code are my favorites amongst Jake's movies (bref, Brokeback is a powerful, haunting movie, Jarhead and Donnie are visually and conceptually stunning, and all 4 of them brought Jake's best performances, IMO). So, if Villeneuve's An Enemy will be anything like Donnie, for example, it will be great. I have faith because it seems that Jake is impressed with the results.
All this discussion made me, like UV and FP, eager to see a trailer or a featurette or something...

ReplyDeleteI think that's likely. When I was reading the book, I could take everything at face value. For example there is no giant spider crawling over Toronto (or another city) in the book.

"Incendies" is a modern-day Greek tragedy set in the Middle East. It's a powerful story that drives the movie. I can recommend it, but visually it's bleak. (You can argue that the stripped-down atmosphere is justified by the topic). I can easily imagine that Villeneuve is the right director for "Prisoners". "An Enemy" on the other hand requires a very different, more atmospheric approach. Based on "Incendies" I've no idea if Villeneuve can pull that off.

Thank you for all the details, Hagen. I'd like to see "Incendies", to get an idea. Bleak atmosphere and minimalism - one gets used to this type of cinema by watching Cristian Mungiu's films.
ReplyDeleteThe giant spider was the first hint. I thought: what? Then Jake talked about time being inconsequential, that it could be the same man in different time frames, a flashback or a flashforward... almost like listening to him talking about "tangent universes", and I realized the movie could be Villeneuve's free interpretation of a story that was clearly about 2 men, completely identical but distinctive, if I may use this oxymoron. It was about an identity dilemma (if we're supposed to be unique, how can someone apparently not related to us be...us? is it possible? who's the original, who's the double? can we accept it?) with disastrous consequences and a frightening conclusion. A fascinating idea that could be translated on screen in many ways. Villeneuve's interpretation could be a more oniric one, deliberately confusing. (And if he's keen on the bizarre, Dover's hallucinating scene in "Prisoners" will be right up his alley.) However, this is just speculation on my part. "An Enemy" will reveal itself next year. We just have to wait.
Speaking of "Prisoners": from what you're saying, Villeneuve seems to be the appropriate choice to direct such a dark, uneasy thriller. Although, this one being an American production backed-up by Warner studios, I suppose he'll have to adjust his style accordingly.

Let's keep our fingers crossed: in competition or just hors concours, a Cannes presence would create good buzz for "An Enemy". Next year might be full of nice surprises.
