Jake Gyllenhaal world has been all about End of Watch and If There Is for a couple of months, and this post continues the mix.
Michael Pena and EoW producer John Lesher at the Q&A following the film's premiere at the London Film Festival:
Spoiler alert: If you haven't seen the film, you might want to wait to see this moment on screen. Brian and Janet sing along to Hey Ma:

Thanks for new post/information.
ReplyDeleteI’ve developed a serious love for subway photos; they always make me smile ☺
Does anyone know why Michelle Gomez is leaving ‘If there is I haven’t found it yet’? The extension might have something to do with it – but apparently she’s being replaced a whole month before the original closing date, so not just to cover the additional performances. Any insights?
"Any insights?
ReplyDeleteNew play or role, prior committment, family obligations or maybe since the play was extended she wanted to give her replacement an opportunity to become more familiar with the role. Or if you want to be a pessimist maybe she could not deal with Jake and Anna getting all the kudos? I hope it's not the latter, pretty sure it's not.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick and Natalie Martinez - are hugely convincing and deeply satisfying. Not for a single second do you think of Gyllenhaal as a Prince of Persia. It is more akin to his skin-head role in Jarhead than of anything he has ever shown us before; could an Oscar nomination be around the corner? I hope so.

It's the perfect name for this post, I'm having a very lazy Sunday myself!
ReplyDeleteI think you are probably right Scott, Gomez may have had a prior commitment. This will give her replacement time to get prepared for the role.
IMO EOW would still be in the top ten if it didn't lose all those screens. If the movie was produced by a major studio with a larger distributor this wouldn't have happened.
Still it's grest thst it's still getting rave reviews.
According to the official studio estimates EoW is still ahead of "Trouble" and "House". Funny that these movies have been clinging to each other for four weeks now.
ReplyDeleteEOW is still in top ten Hagen, this movie is incredible always over my expectations lol:)

ReplyDeleteIt's #12. Data for "Pitch Perfect" are still missing and "Wallflower" is ahead of EoW too (limited release). Maybe EoW will pass "Atlas" when actual box office data are in on Monday.
Oops sorry Hagen, btw is still great!

End Of Watch works as both brutal, gory cop drama (Ayer doesn’t flinch away from some truly disturbing moments) and a wry, observant study into the lives of these cops on the frontline. The performances are uniformly excellent, and the story, although it ambles around some, still comes to a satisfying if devastatingly sad ending. It’s heavily telegraphed, but it’s a testament to the skill of Peña and Gyllenhaal, that you really don’t want end Of Watch to end in the tragic, inevitable way that it does. By putting us right in the middle of the action, End Of Watch puts you through the wringer in a way that few cop dramas manage these days

Sorry I get a mess
ReplyDeleteThe relationship at the heart of the film is that between Taylor and his partner, Mike Zavala, a robust and sharply funny Michael Peña. The declarations of brotherhood, of the way that they swear to look after each other’s families if anything should happen are, to be honest, laid on so thickly that it gets a bit tiresome. The improvised scenes of the two cruising the streets and bullshitting make their devotion perfectly clear. These are, to my mind, the standout moments of the film, and Oscar rumours are already, deservedly, circling around the pair. The two of them have a future in stand-up comedy if they ever get tired with the acting gig.

Saw this tonight in The Hollywood Reporter's Feinberg Forecast :
ReplyDelete"THR has learned that, on the basis of the strong box office generated by their films and the positive reviews of their performances, Jake Gyllenhaal will receive a best actor Oscar campaign for End of Watch, Emily Blunt will receive a best supporting actress Oscar campaign for Looper, and Josh Brolin will receive a best supporting actor Oscar campaign for Men in Black 3."
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/ben-afflecks-argo-oscar-predictions-377402
I love the expression on Jakes face in the first photo :) :)
ReplyDeleteI can see Jake's name being pushed for a campaign for BA for EOW. I haven't seen either Looper nor MIB 3 to comment on them. I like Blunt and Brolin but I don't recall any real praise for their roles in those movies.
Brolin was the best thing about MIB. And I have not seen Looper.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how they will do it, but I don't see Jake taking time to participate of this campaign working in if there is and prisoners.
Well, right now, I'm also hearing praise for Bill Murray for his role as FDR, and of course there's Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln. There will be others, like Phillip Seymour Hoffman,Joaquin Phoenix, possibly Russell Crowe or Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables. Silver Linings Playbook is getting good buzz for Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro & Bradley Cooper. So who knows.
ReplyDeleteIt's still so early. I'm thinking things are very fluid in the Best Actor category right now.
I think Jake has a lot of good friends and good will among the Academy's voting members who could lobby on his behalf, so he won't do the heavy lifting all on his own.
I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that he gets some awards season love. Golden Globes, SAG, Indie Spirit, whatever! : )I was just really glad to read that there was interest in mounting a campaign. I wanted him to get recognition for SC but Summitt was preoccupied with other films that year.
UV, many thanks for the Hey Ma vidclip. Love that unscripted scene so much!
ReplyDeleteWhat about Michael P? He was so good in EOW. I think it would have been smarter to build Michael as the lead and Jake as the supporting before the film was released,.
ReplyDeleteAre you crazy Scott?
ReplyDeleteYes anon (9:43 am) crazy but living in reality. Michael has gotten if not more than just as many great critical reviews than Jake. Michael P certainly did get more positive comments from the movie goers. And Jake has always said that EOW was not his movie but their movie.
ReplyDeleteI think mounting this campaign for Jake (without any regard to Michael's perfomance) could end up making Jake look like another hollywood insider and would make his comments about the movie seem ingenuine. EOW supposedly changed his life.
Alex Fromer @alexfromer
ReplyDeleteGood Morning to me! Jake Gyllenhaal just pet Ziggy outside my favorite coffee shop and told me she's so sweet. #swoon
it is not true Scott, Jake has been appreciated as much as Pena, unfortunately perhaps for his beauty perhaps for PoP or Swift or Reese or who knows why he is never appreciated enough, he is the lead, he is the executive producer of the film and it is all his popularity, I have read about 100 rev and 1000 tweets and some were for Pena others for Jake but all they said how much good the actors were both.
ReplyDeletePina @Miss_Pina
ReplyDeleteI saw #EndOfWatch on the weekend. WOW. It's hard to watch at times, but it was very well done. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena = fantastic!
In the full article at the link, of Feinberg Forecasts, in this most recent forecast, which Feinberg updates every two weeks, both Jake & Michael Pena are listed as possible Oscar noms.
ReplyDeleteNeither is in the top five picks. Jake's listed for Best Actor and Michael for Supporting. Judging by the enthusiastic love we saw from everyone involved,Jake & Michael to all the gangbangers EoW was obviously a collaboration in the truest sense.
While it's easy and natural to view them as co-equals, Jake's character was, arguably, the lead; he was the storyteller. I can remember a similar debate for BBM. There were some people who felt the roles were co-equal, etc.
As for what people will think if WME, Open Road and David Ayer's production company mounts an Oscar campaign for Jake, I seriously doubt anyone will think less of Jake for this.
Jake has shown his support, and been helpful to many other actors as they went thru the awards season gauntlet, co-sponsoring screenings, etc.
When he does press,Jake is always been extremely generous in his public comments, making sure to talk about the strengths of his co-workers, etc. If anything, Jake is self-effacing to a fault.
I don't think either one of the two lead actors feel the least bit competitive. They each had different roles to play, but they depended on one another to give us incredible work.
What seems to dominate most reviews/comments I've read is their chemistry together.
Personally, I am hoping maybe SAG will notice the entire ensemble.
(I was struck by Big Evil's interview. LOL! The actor who plays him is not even close to that character in real life.)
I remember also Michael talked about how Jake helped him and pushed him to be better.
ReplyDeleteIt' s probable that Jake doesn't get the nom, but I would like Jake to win just for slam it in front of that idiotic snobs of Indiewire
ReplyDeleteI had a bit of a lazy Sun too, I was helping my friend decorate for Halloween this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI celebrated my birthday on Fri.
Does anyone know when "The Enemy" will be released? I don't see a release date yet.
Lily
I love Jake but the only outside chance he has to be nominated is if the slew of older actors who are up for goodness knows how many bios this year, cancel each other out. I hope the Academy members think outside the box and stop nominating bio roles, its riduculous. My dream list for lead actors this year would be Daniel for obligatory bio role, then Jake, Hugh and Bradley Cooper just to piss off some People.
ReplyDeleteI think Daniel D Lis great al A.Lincoln but this time indeed Jake deserves if not the nom at least the whole possible appreciation for his outstanding job,and Michael Pena too.And everybody seems forget David A, had been possible to make such a powerful film without him.
ReplyDelete*as if had been possible to make such a powerful film without him
ReplyDeleteSORRY:)
I just knew that Les Mis is not having dialogue. Only songs. This is a risky bet.
ReplyDeleteI think Daniel Day Lewis and Joaquin has already nominations in the bag.
PSH is going to supporting actor.
Happy Birthday, Lily.: ) Birthdays close to Halloween are always fun!
ReplyDeleteHi Lily happy Birthday:)unfortunately I don't know when "The Enemy" will be released.
ReplyDeleteI may be wrong, but I believe that An Enemy is going to Cannes or Venice. I prefer Venice.
ReplyDeleteBelated Happy Birthday, Lily!
ReplyDeleteJake does not make it to the top of many Oscar prognosticator lists. I'd love to see him make it, but I don't know.
I certainly don't think he belongs in supporting. I don't think Michael does, either. And I don't think Jake did for BBM. But it's how the game is played.
Jake deserved a Best Actor Oscar every bit as much as Heath for BBM - more, in my opinion. But he wasn't going to get it, so they did the smart thing.
This time around, I don't know if it will matter for either one.
Would love to see a SAG nomination, especially for ensemble.
All that said, ditto to wanting to see it happen just to spite those Indiewire "experts."
ahappy belated birthday Lily my birthday comingup I mised halloween by 2 days:)
ReplyDeleteWould love to see Jake get an oscar nod too but dont think it will happen either a sag for emsemble cast would be nice.
Happy Birthday Lily!!
ReplyDeleteI don't want to think about any talk about any Oscar nominations for Jake,I don't want to get disappointed.
I do have my fingers crossed though and for Michael too.
Luv all the great fan pics, they are so lucky!!
I may be wrong, but I believe that An Enemy is going to Cannes or Venice. I prefer Venice.
ReplyDeleteMy best guess is that "An Enemy" will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (May 15th to 26th, 2013). It might be helpful that Melanie Laurent is French and Denis Villeneuve's native language is French. Berlinale Film Festival (February 2013) would collide with Villeneuve's and Jake's working schedule with "Prisoners". Venice Film Festival is rather late in the year (August 28th to September 7th, 2013). Or maybe they skip all major film festivals. :)
EoW grossed $1,702,039 on the weekend (total: $36,374,223). I hope it will stay long enough in theaters to reach $40 million.
On Thursday, October 18th, EoW will be released in the Netherlands (first country in Western Europe), Hong Kong and Singapore.
ReplyDeleteThere are pictures from a 'character photoshoot' for EoW on "I Heart Jake".
Hi Hagen, do you know how many theaters Netherlands?
ReplyDeleteGritty and energetic, End Of Watch rattles along thanks to great chemistry and genuine moments of tension. You care for Taylor and Zavala, worry for them when the bullets fly and laugh with them when they’re enjoying each other’s company. A fresh take on the cop genre and a smart way to reinvent the found footage concept, End Of Watch will book you, kick you and laugh you all the way to the slammer

ReplyDeleteYOu guys will not believe it but that Jake Gyllenhaal on Twitter has endorsed Romney for President. The fake Jake is stating he's a democrat but will vote for Romney. This would make me upset except someone should send it to the Obama campaign to let undecided voters know what type of loyal voters Romney attract, too dumb to verify a Twitter account. You should go and see some of the replies applauding Jake for his anti Hollywood stand. Although one or two people have pointed out that this Jake Gyllenhaal should be checked out a valid due to the low number of followers. Hello, it's easy to verify a twitter account even I can do it a real Jake fan.
ReplyDelete"PS.How can someone think Jake for support and Pena for lead??
ReplyDeleteEither way, it won't work."
They both should be leads but whoever is campaigned as lead stands less of a chance than the person who is campaigned for supporting.
You all need to get used to Jake as supporting because the role in Prisoners is a supporting role no way around it.
Please go check out the fake Jake Gyllenhaal account, the tweet responses to the fake endorsment are hilariously stupid and out of control. Jake might trend.
ReplyDeleteOf course the role in Prisoners is a supporting role , but still thr role in EOW is a lead role.

I don't think Jake for support and Pena for lead will get bigger chance.
Jake in Prisoners is def. a support role.:)

Sorry UV about the tweets but the stupidity. Well something positive and smart happened, that fake Jake account has been suspended.
ReplyDeleteNo problem, Scott. It was fun to watch the stupidity. I just got tired of it quickly.
ReplyDeleteBut yay to that account finally being suspended!
Finally suspended the account, something it should have done long ago!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I would love to see Jake come out and say that he supports Obama, but I doubt he will. I wonder if his "people" had anything to do with the account being suspended or if Twitter did that on its own.
ReplyDeleteYaay! So glad that damned account is finally suspended. I hope Jake at least issues a statement endorsing Obama. The way twitter & Facebook exploded, I think it would be a smart idea. Of course he has such a great PR team I'm sure they will handle this... (LOLOL! That was a joke. About the PR team. : ) )
ReplyDeletebobbyanna,
ReplyDeleteLOL
I can't believe how wide that stupid fake tweet went. It was posted on FB by a nasty right wing community, with a photo of Jake. The photo was liked more than 9,000 times, shared by almost 3,000 and there are almost a thousand comments.
ReplyDeleteAnd people keep ignoring the announcements that it's a fake.
It's a weird world.
Finally! It took the fake Jake endorsement of Mittens to finally close that fake account down. The only reason it was done was because it exploded and ended up on that jackass' site Drudge.
ReplyDeleteI would love for Jake to openly endorse Obama but I doubt it. For someone who comes from such a politically aware family, I am struck how he and even his sister Maggie seem to be very passive politically, to me anyway. We saw more of it with their parents.
I'm going to miss all these fantastic photos of Jake and his fans once the play ends it's run!
Too early to talk about Oscar buzz for EOW but a SAG nomination would be great.

EoW will be in 744 theaters on Friday (-807, -52.0%), a big, but usual drop.
ReplyDeleteAs a film it boasts some fantastic performances, an impressive script and striking visuals. It never fails to entertain and, if anything, it runs too short. The arresting (no pun intended) portrayal of Brian and Mike from Gyllenhaal and Peña that drives End of Watch is a refreshing and captivating spin on the “buddy cop” relationship; one would hope the two act together again in the future as you honestly can’t get enough of their charisma. All in all, one of the best cop dramas/thrillers to come out in recent years and one that deserves a huge audience.
