Seeing double?

We're not getting excited yet, since this news could change as fast as he sped out of Motor City, but Variety reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in The Enemy, a film by Oscar-nominated Canadian director Denis Villeneuve. The indie thriller is about a dysfunctional history teacher who discovers his doppelgänger. It's based on a novel called The Double by José Saramago.

According to First Showing, "In a strange twist, his double also appears to be about five years younger, complete with a mustache. Could there by some time travel going on here? ... The Boston Globe apparently called it a 'wonderfully twisted meditation on identity and individuality.' It sounds like it might have flares of Source Code with its sci-fi sort of story, but since it's an indie, the budget likely won't allow for such huge action set pieces."

Double the Jake would make anyone smile!

We've heard talk of Jake in talks before, but someone from the film's production company tweeted the news, so I hope that's a good sign. And according to this story, the movie will shoot in the spring in Toronto.

Jake is intrigued by his own reflection.

A dual role would be a great challenge for Jake. Working with a talented director on a story by a great writer makes for a promising start. And i like the sound of "dark and edgy." Fingers crossed that this is true and that this is a good production.

  1. UV, I'm hoping for this one, sounds interesting and Saramago is a Nobel Winner Portuguese writer, but i never read this book, his work is usually very complex and have a strong message behind. I agree with you,it reminds of SC in some ways.

  2. From Page six

Jake Gyllenhaal has been getting rave reviews for his latest role . . . in a music video. The actor, who appeared on the big screen last in “Source Code,” directed by David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, plays a serial killer in a video for “Time to Dance” by French band the Shoes. The clip — in which Gyllenhaal attacks hard-partying hipsters while wearing a fencing uniform — seems inspired by “American Psycho” protagonist Patrick Bateman. That character’s creator, Bret Easton Ellis, has given Gyllenhaal props for the role, tweeting, “Stunned by how scary/funny/catchy this is. Jake G is awesome.” Ellis has also been tweeting ideas this month for an “American Pyscho” sequel set in LA. Yesterday it emerged that Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in “An Enemy,” about a history teacher who discovers his double on a rented DVD and seeks him out. According to Variety, Gyllenhaal will play two roles in the film, described as “dark and edgy.”

  5. The production company for the movie also tweeted that Jake will be starring, but they only link to the Variety story. So still no official confirmation.

We might not get that until we see Jake on set.

  6. Yes, fingers and toes crossed here, as well. Makes it hard to work :)

Thanks for the post link, gr. Nice to see Jake get more props for the video.

Paula, I haven't read it either. Seems to have higher reader ratings than critical praise. At least on Amazon, where it says critical reaction was mixed. But it has four of five stars from readers.

  7. I'm not familiar with this story, either. Saramago's "Blindness" was made into a movie with Julianne Moore & Mark Ruffalo, but I didn't see it. Maybe I'll check it out.

UV, It's been easily 20 years since I've read any of his books. He has a cheeky sense of humor in The History of the Siege of Lisbon.
If Jake actually does this movie, he may inspire me to revisit
    the author. : )

  13. Bobbyanna, you should see blindness, I liked it apart from being my favorite Saramago book.He is a very difficult author to read with very long sentences, I've read blindness, the gospel according to Jesus Christ and dead with interruptions and it was hard.

I can almost picture Jake coming to present the film in Portugal( witch never happens, but a girl can dream!)

And someone did a recap of Jake's career in music videos.

How the guy gets that Jake sought out Daniel Wolfe from DW saying they were looking to do something together is a question. But it's a fun read.

Maybe thats a sign that he's on route to begin work or at least pre stuff for the movie. The reports were stating filming would start right away, early spring which technically isn't far out.

I forgot to link the Advocate story yesterday. It would be great if Jake goes.

  52. HiUV, Kate of WDW has made al search more deepened and it seems that Jake won't go to the Party of The Advocate

    from WDW

Friday, 23 March 2012Jake Gyllenhaal catch up! Appearances and Big Easy Express
All is quiet on the Jake front. Last seen eating out in NYC, the Jake Gyllenhaal trail has now cooled and a reward has been offered for any verified sightings of the actor. This may not actually be true. However, a bit part of me hopes that this absence has a lot to do with Jake dotting 'i's and crossing 't's on his contract for An Enemy. Director Denis Villeneuve's next project, Prisoners, is due to being production in early 2013 and so if he wants to have An Enemy finished and dusted by then, presumably work will begin soon. Maybe Jake's getting measured for his double suits as we speak.

The next sighting that is certain is Jake's appearance at the Celebration of Paul Newman's Dream in NYC on 2 April. Advocate magazine celebrates its 45th birthday next week in Beverly Hills but, despite a little confusion in some of the announcements with the inclusion of Jake's name, it doesn't look as if he's to attend. Which is a shame. Advocate gave Jake and Heath one of their most memorable covers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I sawe that silly Jake/Reese story flOAting around yesterdAy (eyes roll). I hope we get conformation with about Jake and Enemy from a more solid sorce like Variety or THR.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't see anything definitive in that report from WDW that says Jake won't be attending. He probably won't, but it's anyone's guess.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi And, I don't know , she says that that there has been confusion in to announce the name of Jake, if it tells it she will have made some search.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree, Chica. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are very accurate industry news sources. I follow Deadline Hollywood and The Wrap, too. Online film news sites like Indiewire & Latino Review are pretty credible a lot of the time, too.

Most of these others are primarily gossip sites that just repeat what they find other places, maybe change a few words to make it sound like they know something.

The tweets I'm looking forward to are tweets about Jake on location shooting a movie. Then I'll believe it. Looking forward to the Paul Newman event, April 2nd. That's something we know Jake will attend.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I follow Deadline HW too Bobbyanna and the other sites you mentioned are very reliable as well.

I would love the attend the Paul Newman Celebation of a Dream event in NY if possible. I haven't checked to see if tickets are available.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I had no idea Celebitchy was unkind to Jake, I just thought they were ridiculous, but hey I've been gone for the better part of 3 maybe four years.

I am still on the mend and can't think about Jake all that much anymore and what I don’t know is OK by me but not so OK here it seems.

Variety is being sold, THR is doing badly, Deadline Hollywood is OK, but she gets it wrong sometimes, as other sites are prone to do. The wrap is OK...such as it is.

I am still on the mend and need to keep my stressors at a minimum and that includes Jake G.

I will try to remove posts and chill.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Sass, Kaiser from Celebitchy don't like Jake because he dated Taylor Swift, who's a person she hates.

  60. Chica, I'd love to be able to go, but NYC isn't in the works for me right now. :(

Tickets are still available for second & third tier seating at Lincoln Center Avery Fisher Hall. Ticket prices range from $75-$35.

I hope the do well, bcz there's a benefit the next night for the Rainforest Fund featuring Elton John, Sting, & Meryl Streep at Carnegie Hall. Both events will appeal to similar audiences.

There's also a Tribute to Catherine Deneuve at Lincoln Center that same night!

    ReplyDelete
  61. No need to remove the post, sass. I am not a fan of CB because they mock Jake and all of his relationships. Just an FYI.

The Variety sale is interesting. They definitely have a dying business model but a big-name brand. It will be interesting to see what happens.
