Time Flies

Just in time for The Time Traveler's Wife to be released, there's a poll naming the UK's favorite time traveling films. Back to the Future took the top spot, with Terminator in second place. But the third place time-traveling superhero is none other than Jake Gyllenhaal's Donnie Darko:

Over the past ten years, Jake has traveled through the last six decades to play a variety of characters. The Fifties:

Sixties:

1970s:

Eighties:

1990s:

00s:

Next year, Jake breaks away from modern times and goes back to the 6th century to play the Prince of Persia:

What's your favorite era for Jake? Any time period you'd like to see him try? Early 19th century, perhaps?

  1. I like Jake in all time periods, but I think I like the "00"s the best.

    A fun post, thank you.

And a new Jake film is less than four months away. Yay!

  2. Actually that last pic is kinda appealing, like a Lord Byron. I always wondered what he'd look like in that kind of drama. :)

  3. Maybe it's the Mad Men fangirl in me talking, but I would love to see Jake in a 60's urban drama. I'm thinking something along the lines of an updated remake of Love with the Proper Stranger. I think that's a time period that suits him.

  4. Jake would look good in something like that, suvee. Though I'm a little tired of glorifying "when men were men and women were secretaries."

Of course, I've never seen the show :)

I like the Lord Byron look, too, anon. That Worth1000 poster did a good job.

And the oughts/noughts/naughts have been good to Jake, LG. And to us :)

I'm happy that the Moon project isn't futuristic. Not sure if I need to see Jake time traveling ahead.

  5. I'm a sucker for time travel. Books and film. And if historical/romance time travel, even better.

Normally I wouldn't be a fan of the photoshopped Worth1000 Jake pic. But if you notice, they flipped the pic, so it's really Jake's left profile in that photoshop. Therefore, I love it! :-D

  6. I'm not a fan of that "Byronic" look, but Rendition Jake belongs in the Hall of Fame. IMO, Jake looked almost angelic in October Sky. He really was a beautiful young man in that movie. Amazing trasition to Swoff, all things considered. I'm addicted to Mad Men, too. Wouldn't mind seeing Jake as something from that era.

Twitter says J&R went out for dinner tonight, and there were some adorable pics of the kids with a nanny on the set of Reese's movie,Deacon playing with his scooter, while Ava was roller skating.

  8. I would love to see Jake in a 60's period film, can you imagine him in a remake of the Graduate? Dustin was 30 or so when he made it.

He does look good as Lord Byron too!!

I see the paps caught up with the kisds I saw a few tweets last night that said that the paps were chased from the set, the pics are cute.

What a great post! You can see how Jake has gone from cute kid to the handsome and sexy man he has ecome today. I love his look in Rendition and BBM the best.

  11. Morning, all!

I'm amazed at how Jake's hair styles affect his characters" personality...or becomes part of their personality.

"Love with a Proper Stranger" is on my list of permanent favorites! Steve McQueen and Natalie Wood. They did a remake of it with Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry (Fools Rush In) which was very charming, but lacked the star power of the original.

I'm still dreaming of Jake doing a remake of "This Property is Condemned". He could absolutely nail the Robert Redford role.

  12. How young and adorable he was in October sky, I love that movie.

I had no idea that Fool's Rush was a remake of This Property is Condemned Bobbyanna and yes Jake would be perfect in a remake!

How about Jake the time period of the 30's? I remember Jeff Wells from Hollywoodelsewhere wishing that HW would make a remake of Days of Heaven with Jake and Reese.

I like the Lord Byron look , great photoshop!!

  13. Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal chose not to walk the line Friday night after having sushi at Morimoto on Chestnut Street.

Hey Suvee, another Mad Men fangirl!! 60's Jake is appealing to me as well.

    from the PhillyInsider:

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal chose not to walk the line Friday night after having sushi at Morimoto on Chestnut Street.
They left out a back door and hailed a cab to take them a block to their SUV's parking space, reports photog HughE Dillon, who saw her as the cab zipped past the restaurant.

Thursday night, the couple did the steak scene at Butcher & Singer at 15th and Walnut Streets.

  14. I think I liked Jack Twist and Douglas Freeman era look the best too, although he was beautiful in Zodiac, I loved that scene where he was meeting Melanie for dinner. Loved DD, MM, BB and others, but he was a very cute boy then, now a beautiful man. I'm looking forward to being swept off my feet by Dastan. Probably I'd enjoy him in any era, but a 19th century drama would be nice.

  15. Oh, I would loooooove Jake in the 20s, 30s and 40s era! :) I was just entranced by This Property Is Condemned when I just happened upon it one afternoon on a classic movie TV station. I love Natalie Wood. Love With A Proper Stranger sounds great too.

    ReplyDelete
  16. As far as I know, there's never been a remake of "This Property Is Condemned." It was based on a rare Tennessee Williams short story.
I saw it on TV, and was very..."impressed" by Robert Redford! :)Over the years, I've envisioned Leo, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, even Clooney, Pitt, or Depp, but Jake would absolutely nail it. Perfection.

(I wish Jake and Jon Hamm would make a movie together...)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Whoops, I meant to say I didn't know that Fools Rush In was a remake of Love and A proper Stranger! I think that Natalie and Steve did their best acting in that film.

And yes I can see Jake in the Redford role in Condemned.

  18. Love the post. Don't care what Jake does in future as long as he has some great love scenes and we see some skin.

  19. Good night, babblers!
Donnie Darko is the first film that I saw with Jake Gyllenhaal.

I love all periods, but sixties is my favorite.

I loved that scene where he was meeting Melanie for dinner.
I love this scene too, anon.

I think Jake is wonderful in all seasons!

Today, I have the same age of Jake.

  25. Time Travelers wife was a bit of a dissapointment if you read the book, but it's a tearjerker. I wished that I would have waited for it to come out on DVD.

It's fun checking out Jake's hair in all of his films and even though he has a marine cut in Jarhead, I think he is sexy in this film.

I think i'm leaning towards Jake in the '00's period for now.

    Happy birthday monica!!!

it's 92 in suburban Detroit, and extremely humid, chica, so you have my sympathies.

Extra, I am SO glad I'm not the only one out here obssessing about Mad Men.I read somewhere that people are having viewing parties with 60's style drinks and h'or d'ouvres. I'm not THAT bad...I prefer looking at Jon Hamm in the privacy of my own home...:)

  33. I think maybe I have a "type." I adore Jake, of course. He's the Gold Standard. Then there's Javier Bardem, Jon Hamm, even young Al Pacino. But then how do I explain Heath, who introduced me to Jake. Heath who was my first love.

    Thanks for the link, extra!

  38. People:
Reese Witherspoon, cheering from the sidelines as beau Jake Gyllenhaal played basketball during a weekend getaway in Martha's Vineyard, Mass. The actor was participating in a charity match outdoors at the Chilmark Community Center, where he played on a five-person team. Earlier in the weekend, Gyllenhaal ran in a 5K race along with Witherspoon's kids, Ava, 9, and Deacon, 5, who took a fun, leisurely approach to the run while he speedily completed it in under 21 minutes!

    thanks, UV and ONP!

  39. BBM/Zodiac: 60's Jake for me! But I do like the Lord Byron photoshop of Jake, he looks good in that period as well! A sighting of a Pop poster in the theater, I saw 500 Summers but no Pop poster but I bet we will start seeing them a lot more as May 2010 gets closer.

We get a bit more detail about the BB game on MV, thanks monica nad I hope you enjoyed your birthday!

Love that sighting UV, it's always great to hear about them from fans, Thanks!!

  45. :-D :-D I don't know who I'm rooting for in this battle of the wits - The Philly Pap for being thisclose, yet not quite, to getting the money shot. Or Reese and/or Jake for being seasoned pros around paps and knowing how to elude them/him when they want.

  48. philly chitchat also blogged that Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger are in town visiting. BC is supposed to be a friend of Paul Rudd's and Reese has said in the past that Renee is one of her closest friends. So maybe this is true.

  49. Has anyone seen this twitter:

    ChristopherE

"Called in by agency for last minute VO read to ADR Jake Gyllenhaal in Jerry Bruckheimer film "Prince of Persia." I want this gig!!! ;-)"

Could it be that they won´t use Jakes original voice in the film?
Some people were complaining that Jakes voice is too "soft"....

And it looks like "Brothers" won´t be shown at any of the film festivals - not in NY, no Venice and nothing from Toronto so far. (The schedule there is nearly completd) I would really like to know how they want to promote this film and create some buzz.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't think we have to worry about them erasing Jake's voice from the movie. That's not the kind of thing they'd be allowing out there so openly.
