From the trailer, I had thought that the whole movie was Jake Gyllenhaal (Brian Taylor) and Michael Peña (Mike Zavala) trapped in a house and how they have to get out. But it’s not! There’s more than just “we’re going to shoot ourselves out.” This action/drama/mystery (i didn’t see any mysteries in it, though) is an inside look into the lives of two Los Angeles police officers working on the meanest streets filled with guns, money and drug cartels. We see their home lives, their cop lives, and how they handle the balance between the two.

I would like to ask the screenwriter of this film one question. Do cops and criminals literally talk like that, or is the F-word the only swear word you know? I mean, good Lord, it was “F this, you mother F-ing F, what the F, we’re going to F-ing do this sh-, like F man, it’s F-ing now we gonna F-ing F them up, those F-ing motherFers F FF FfFFfFFFFFFF.”

If you see the movie, you’ll know that was not an exaggeration. If you’re sensitive to language, definitely skip this one.

It’s shot by a combination of third person camera bouncing along with the chase scenes, and Jake Gyllenhaal holding a camera himself. If you get queasy/nauseous with that kind of filming, you’ll want to sit near the back and pop a Dramamine or something. So what do I think?

If you like cop movies with lots of violence and strong language, it’s for you. If you’re not into that, don’t go.Hagennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082978304655465192.post-87167875119576587022012-09-06T09:01:58.421-04:002012-09-06T09:01:58.421-04:00Yes, UV, the HipTix party was the tweet I meant.

"End of Watch" is a cop buddy movie, but simply naming the genre is unfair to it. It's more about a relationship between two men doing an impossible job. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña give two of their best performances in careers with lots of them, as Taylor and Zavala, Los Angeles street cops in a tough, largely Mexican-American district.

As the movie opens, Taylor is filming some kind of documentary about the job. Whether this is only for himself isn't made clear. He uses a small hand-held camera and even has a video lens that fits in his buttonhole. Possibly that explains some of the shots in the movie, which doesn't concern itself overmuch with his doc, but does use some of his narration.

It must be said the two men find themselves in an implausibly high percentage of dangerous and violent situations, finally finding themselves targeted by a Mexican drug cartel. There are also some good times, especially the friendship between the two women, Zavala's wife (Natalie Martinez) and Taylor's fiancé (Anna Kendrick). Taylor's wedding party is warm and important.

The writer-director, David Ayer, knows this territory. He wrote Denzel Washington's 2001 Oscar-winning "Training Day," and two other superior cop movies, "Dark Blue" (2002) and "S.W.A.T." (2003). As a director he plunges into often chaotic action and is able to make it comprehensible. The special effects never upstage the characters. The movie opens Sept. 21.Vivnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082978304655465192.post-31785715519608472722012-09-06T01:58:23.974-04:002012-09-06T01:58:23.974-04:00Spotted: Jake Gylenhall in front of Park Bar. David Ayer’s career to date as a director has consisted of variations on the theme of his breakout script, “Training Day,” some successful – “Harsh Times” – others less so – “Street Kings.” This is along similar lines, but with the ever talented central duo of Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena taking the lead roles (with Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo and David Harbour among those in support). But there’s one crucial difference – Ayer’s using a found-footage aesthetic, with the film made up entirely of CCTV footage and cameras mounted on the two leads, their weaponry and their car. It should at least be an interesting experiment, and if it pays off, could make for a truly visceral experience. And indeed, we’ve heard wildly mixed things to date – some have called it unwatchable, some have suggested it could be a dark horse Oscar contender. Whether the latter are on the money, or if it follows film like “The Grey” and “50/50” as films whose awards chances are massively over-hyped by excitable bloggers remains to be seen, but we’ll be finding out soon – the film premieres at TIFF in only a few short days.
When?
