Sadly, I have to say, because with small theaters dying or only showing popcorn cinema we loose the chance to see a lot of really interesting movies on a big screen. We used to have quite some small theaters that only screened small/independent movies, but they are extremely rare these days. Plus, there is no way that my home cinema could ever be nearly as good as the "real deal". Except I spend a REAL fortune on screen and sound system. Hardly anyone can afford that.

I am a little spoiled here because we have small independent theaters here (one of them has one of the best sound systems nationwide), and the theater chains can clearly NOT put up with them. I like the smaller theaters anyway.

But on the other side, they have to survive, too. My favorite theater, for example, didn´t screen Demolition because the owner was worried it wouldn´t draw enough people.

In the end, before I cannot watch a movie at all because no theater would show it, I´d rather use a service like Netflix etc. I don´t like it but there obviously is no choice. As you said, times change. I have to say that I think with streaming services there might be a bigger chance for smaller/independent/art movies to find an audience. More than going to small, independent theaters. No good for some theaters, though. There are a lot of pro´s and con´s here, and only time will tell where we end up with this.

It will be interesting to see whether Cannes really sticks to the new rules in the long run. I don´t think so. Like me, they will have to follow the market, and the future for many movies or TV series is in streaming. Like it or not.

I´m torn. I´m not someone to desperately hold onto things being done "the old way" and I like innovative ideas. I just don´t like to be forced into a membership with monthly payments, maybe that´s why I´m more con than pro streaming services, at least for now!

I have seen Demolition on Amazon. I could test the streaming for a month without charge and I used only that month.

And as for having to watch movies on a computer, I have to. I´ve got a very good TV and I don´t see any sense in throwing it away. We bought it when TV´s with Bluetooth were pretty new on the market and not affordable for us at all. Our TV still works perfectly and I think we´re going to keep it as long as it does!

I have never tried to find out how successfull a movie is/was on a streaming platform. I´m going to look into that because I really want to know what the response to Okja will be.

My mind is still pretty much with SITPWG. With all the upcoming projects I am wondering when Jake might have the time to do another show on broadway? I am specifically thinking of "Burn This".Diananoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082978304655465192.post-58471916153020989512017-05-11T08:42:40.277-04:002017-05-11T08:42:40.277-04:00Anon 11:50, the rumour of Netflix movies being kic...Anon 11:50, the rumour of Netflix movies being kicked out of Cannes was ridiculous, and theaters' guild knew it when they spread it. There have never been movies chosen by the festival committee "kicked out" later. Never in the 70 years history of Cannes. It was a bullying strategy used by FNCF to put pressure on Lescure and Fremaux. They went all the way up to the ministry of culture. In the States, people would have been up in arms for this kind of anti-democratic intervention. They partially succeeded since the committee had to change the rules for next years. Although... Netflix is producing Scorsese's next gangster saga, The Irishman, with DeNiro and Pacino. I doubt that any festival in the world, Cannes included, will deny its screening.

Now, Netflix isn't our friend but it's definitely not the enemy. The gigantic theater chains are, though. Same theater chains that fought so hard again Netflix are the ones refusing to screen many of the Cannes movies. And when they do, they quickly replace festival films with the superheroe blockbuster du jour. And they have a ridiculous rule: movies shown in french theaters cannot be streamed on any platform (Canal+, Netflix) for 3 years!

Same in the States: distributors release art/indie movies limitedly and, without a big publicity awards push, very few people buy tickets. Then, same theater chains and industry analists deem them failures. Take Demolition for example. A beautiful poetic film. With a versatile performance from Jake, who ran the whole gamut of emotions by the end of it. Released theatrically in 800 cinemas without smart publicity, practically dumped by Focus and deemed a flop. How many people saw it in theaters in USA? Since the majority of the foreign territories didn't get it at all. I saw it this year on HBO Go.

Cinefiles love to see movies in theaters but the reality is times and people, teens especially, are changing. They aren't interested in seeing anything else than popcorn movies, tentpoles they can chew as easily as they chew snacks while talking to each other loudly and checking up their phones every 5 minutes.

Netflix is alluring to auteurs because it gives them total creative freedom and generous budgets (big studios don't anymore). In addition, filmmakers don't have to wait for the weekend BO numbers in fear that their movie will flop and they could lose credibility. They know the movie will reach a large audience with Netflix _ 98 million subscribers in 170 territories (50 million in USA).

As for being forced to watch movies on a computer, you don't have to. Technology allowes us to pair our big screen TV with phones, tablets, laptops through Bluetooth. The movie is projected on the TV - we don't call it home cinema for nothing.

Disclaimer: I don't have a Netflix subscription. But I'll buy it since I want to see Okja, Duncan Jones' Mute, Scorsese's Irishman and other upcoming movies.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082978304655465192.post-68172759089259028662017-05-11T03:57:12.976-04:002017-05-11T03:57:12.976-04:00Anon at 11:50PM, the outcome doesn´t surprise me, ...Anon at 11:50PM, the outcome doesn´t surprise me, at least they are keeping this year´s Netflix movies in the competition. I do understand that services like Netflix are seen as an enemy to the cinemas. They are, really. But I think a festival like Cannes should be about the movies and not about the way they are presented to the public. Just my two cents.

I prefer to watch movies in cinemas and I would love to see Okja on the big screen. Now that´s sadly not going to happen in Germany by the looks of it, and I can only watch it on my computer with Netflix, which is not very pleasant. It would be great if Netflix would do both, cinema and streaming. I have no idea how this should be organised, though.

I am still hoping Demolition does get released on DVD over here, it´s a very personal movie to me and I´d love to have it on DVD...

Diananoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082978304655465192.post-29722534066913320072017-05-10T23:50:43.918-04:002017-05-10T23:50:43.918-04:00http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/infos-communique...http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/infos-communiques/communique/articles/press-release-of-the-festival-de-cannes

Official press release from Cannes festival concerning Netflix films shown at the festival.
So the rumour obviously was not ridiculous but had some substance. But it feels like that with every movie I see Jake in, but on stage it´s so much more intense.

It defines the quality of an actor´s work to me when the character that an actor plays is the only one you see. Movies chosen by Cannes' committee have never been kicked out. The phrasing itself shows its source: the exhibitors association, FNCF.

But more telling is the fact that no professional media, be it Variety, THR, or any of the French outlets have even mentioned the rumour. The only place where that tweet was discussed: the awards blog a.k.a. the hate think-tank. Not even AV Club bothered to comment.

Whether FNCF will succeed in pressuring Fremaux remains to be seen (I doubt it). But IF it happens, the movies will be screened out of competition and the controversy will make them an event.
For us, considering Jake has a supporting role, either scenario is good, in or out of competition.
For Okja and alternative venues of filmmaking, it will be a "success" in limiting creative freedom.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082978304655465192.post-43908898927810282232017-05-05T17:22:34.086-04:002017-05-05T17:22:34.086-04:00It's not a question of Okja and the other movi...It's not a question of Okja and the other movie not going to Cannes. The French exhibitors are mad about Thierry Fremaux choosing 2 Netflix movies in competition. They're especially afraid that Okja could win Palme d'Or and not be screened in French theaters - oh, the audacity! It's also about good ol'money (taxes to be paid by Netflix).
They demand Fremaux to take them out of official comp. to be screened off competition: "It will be a dramatic moment for the value of the Palme d’Or, if the film wins the Grand Prix and then is only seen on Netflix or an equivalent platform, and not in theatres, apart from in Korea.
