Double Vision

The DVD release of Enemy apparently contains a "Making Of" featurette. Some excerpts here, along with passages from a Film School Rejects appreciation for A24's movie selections.

Enemy finds Jake Gyllenhaal collaborating with Denis Villeneuve for a second consecutive outing after his fine performance in the so-so Prisoners. This Jose Saramago-adapted story of an introverted professor who finds out he has a double in the form of a confident aspiring actor allows for an abstract and at-times shocking meditation on identity in the face of life’s banal cycles and drastic changes. A tense, brooding, and decidedly discomfiting film, Enemy is more reminiscent of the Gyllenhaal of Donnie Darko than the movie star he subsequently became. Yet it’s also far more grown up than Gyllenhaal’s otherwise impressive initial outings.

Unafraid of ambiguity and entrusting of its audience to deliberate over its array of idiosyncratic set pieces, Enemy’s style and narrative seem at first to produce a contradiction: the film’s crux centers on the protagonist’s literal confrontation with himself, yet the film materializes no definitive takeaways in terms of what this confrontation produces, preferring instead to give audiences a piercing, peculiar final image meant to haunt any discussions of the film.

One cannot perform ambiguity, or act out great big themes, and therein lies the brilliance of Gyllenhaal’s decisions on display here. His dual performance is remarkably (yet necessarily) specific – he imbues each character not simply with unique characteristics, but embodies them with separate worldviews – yet he is also inscrutable, his interior life assumed but notably distanced from the viewer. The result mirrors his characters’ detachment, confusion and uncertainty, but more importantly, it allows Enemy to function as the abstract fable it is.

One seemingly rote scene involves Gyllenhaal’s conversation with his mother played by Isabella Rossellini. This brief scene subtly opens up the possibility that (for the first and perhaps only time in the film) either version of Gyllenhaal could be present onscreen given the select information provided in their exchange. Gyllenhaal no doubt had an idea of which character he was portraying in this moment, but that is absent in our experience, with the necessary ambiguity this scene needs to provide the film. With Enemy, Villeneuve has taken a movie star and carefully stripped away his identity and presence by bifurcating him.

I can appreciate A24 for supporting Enemy. I just wish they had done a better job promoting it.

Here's a brief video of Isabella Rossellini discussing Enemy.

Funny comment in a story about authors and audiobooks:

Christina: I listened to The Great Gatsby this year and almost fell out of my chair when I realized the voice I was hearing belonged to Jake Gyllenhaal. His narration took a story I'd read over and over again and made it completely new. Could we just have him narrate my entire life? Because that would really work for me.

  2. So glad that Enemy is being released with featurette. Shame that the film really wasn't promoted that well. I loved the film, it was quirky , weird and intense and I hope it finds a wider audience when it's released.

  13. Or maybe not:

The Indiana County Court House — just a short stroll from the boyhood home of one of America’s most-admired movie stars — will itself double briefly as a movie location Friday.

The county commissioners Wednesday granted permission for actor Jake Gyllenhaal and a production crew of the new movie “Southpaw” to use the third-floor sheriff’s department as a set for the film about a boxer who fights his way to the top only to find his life falling apart around him.

Drew Nicholan, an assistant manager for site selection for Hope Films Inc., told the county commissioners that the film crew specifically wants to use the holding cell in the sheriff’s department for what will probably be a short but “critical” scene in the movie that links Gyllenhaal’s character to his daughter.

The filming will take place Friday evening after the courthouse has closed.

SCENE FOR MOVIE TO BE SHOT TONIGHT AT COURTHOUSE

    6/27/2014

The Indiana filming of the movie Southpaw is scheduled to wrap up at the Kovalchick Complex today, but there will be one more scene to shoot, at a different site.

The movie’s star, Jake Gyllenhaal, will shoot a scene using the holding cell at the Indiana County sheriff’s office. There will be no disruption of activities at the courthouse, as the filming will take place this evening after the close of business.

  19. I'm still amazed to see how many people give 'Enemy' a (very) negative rating / review. When you want to watch (or buy) a film, one of the first things you do is to check whether or not it's a film you might be interested in, right?
It seems to me many people haven't even watched the full film before commenting on it.

Over here in The Netherlands 'Enemy' even played at a cinema near me, a 15 minute drive from where I live, which was a huge surprise! I went to see it twice, and I even considered seeing it a third time... ;)

Right now, 4 weeks after its Dutch premiere, it still plays in 9 cities across the country. I haven't got a clue how successful it is / was here, as it only plays in smaller theaters, but overall it does / did pretty well. Considering its artsyness, I mean ;)

I love 'Enemy'. Jake's acting is wonderful and so subtle. The story and the plot might not be everyone's cup of tea, but to me the role(s) of Adam & Anthony are amongst the most fascinating in Jake's career so far.

I hope he'll work with Denis Villeneuve again some time soon.

    Auberle Southpaw Gala July 10

Antoine is very interested in portraying realism in his films. The important scenes in Southpaw that occur when a young character is in a group foster home will be shot at Auberle. Antoine and the actors have met with Auberle staff to garner as much realism as possible for that portion of the movie.

The movie has a major scene where light heavyweight champion Billy Hope (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and his wife Maureen (played by Rachel McAdams) attend a black tie charity fundraiser. Antoine has offered Auberle the opportunity to make the event a real fundraiser for Auberle with our guests being part of the movie.

To accommodate the filming schedule, the black tie fundraiser will take place on the evening of Thursday July 10th and will film overnight in the ballroom of the William Penn Hotel. Guests, 18 years and older, will arrive dressed in black tie formal at a time between 4 and 6 pm and need to be available thru 6 am on July 11th. Here is your opportunity to support Auberle by attending a black tie event with Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Antoine Fuqua and other celebrities and be part of a major movie event in Pittsburgh.

  29. The Fall Festival 50: Our Wishlist For The Venice, Telluride And Toronto Film Festivals

    “Nightcrawler” (Dan Gilroy)
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed
Synopsis: A young man enters the dark underground world of the freelance crime journalists in Los Angeles.
Last We Heard: After “Michael Clayton,” we’re very interested in the directorial debuts of anyone in the Gilroy family, and Tony’s younger brother Dan becomes a helmer with this dark thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The film elicited a bidding war in Cannes, with Open Road beating out Focus, The Weinstein Company and others for the project, so this seems like a hot prospect. Maybe it’s mainly a commercial project, but we reckon it’ll turn up at TIFF regardless.

Which, unlike Indiewire staff, I don't think will be " a commercial project" at all. More like an indie with awards potential. This being the reason the distributors fought for it.

There is still hope that Pittsburg will garner fan pics and tweets more so than Indiana,PA just do to Pitts size in population. The Nightcrawler pics were so numerous because it was film in Los Angeles where paps seem to outnumber the stars. I don't think those NC on the set pics were released with permission.

  39. You are right about there being more paps in LA. I still read a lot of comments wondering if there was something wrong with him. People that follow Jake's career, or just movie news in general, also commented from the beginning that he was making a movie but there are still those that like to be negative.

    ReplyDelete
  40. NC pics were not released with permission, they were paparazzi pictures. This is what happens when you have a very tight budget and you are shooting scenes in public and you have what is called an open set. It can be very distracting and even disruptive for actors. It happened to some extent when Jake was filming Enemy, too. I bet after the nude photos from Everest leaked, Jake's people tightened things up for him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just want to add that an open set is not secured. When Actors film in public, there's usually security in the budget.
There's a lot of expensive equipment and props on set, and even trailers get broken into, so security is needed. If it's delegated to a crew member they may not always be able to spot problems.

Fans who show up at movie sets attempt to talk to actors, and get autographs, etc. or try to grab souvenirs.

When the crew's setting up a shot, an actor might look like they aren't doing anything, but they're very focused and don't want to get distracted.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It isn't only fans. Sometimes crew members and extras take pictures. That's why they aren't letting extras take pictures on Southpaw. The pictures from Everest and Nightcrawler could've been taken by some crew who tried to sell them. It happens. The director has to set rules up. The Southpaw set seems like a tight ship.

Some Nightcrawler info, not sure how reliable. Notorious Films is distributing it in Italy. Roberto Proia, GM for Notorious, spoke to Film.it about distributing the Philip Seymour Hoffman's movie "A Most Wanted Man" and other English-lNGUAGE MOVIES:

Also interesting your policy translation of titles, many of which are still in English ...
We will leave in English A Most Wanted Man, because the Italian title of the book from which it is drawn is not good cinematically. It is true some of our movies have an Italian title: Nightcrawlers will be called Jackals (Sciacalli). You will see Jake Gyllenhaal with fifteen pounds less in the role of a photojournalist who takes advantage of the tragedy to make money and end up staying too screwed. We liked then name it after that. Other titles such as Left Behind starring Nicolas Cage, will remain in English.

I think something is lost in translation in that description of NC, LOL.

From a recent story about the Notorious slate:

Thrills promise even three thrillers published in October: the apocalyptic Left Behind (October 2), where some people disappear mysteriously called from the other side before the final judgment: starring Nicolas Cage; Nightcrawler (October 16, with preview in Toronto) Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of a brave reporter who always arrives before the others at the scene of the crime, risking his life except the time he anticipates even the police; and A Most Wanted Man by Anton Corbijn, spy story from the dark atmosphere is a novel by John Le Carre, and that is also the last film starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, so that for the promotion of the Italian Notorious organize a memorial dedicated actor with the participation of the entire cast, Rachel McAdams Daniel Bruhl through Willem Dafoe.

  59. Spoilerish Southpaw tidbit:

Commissioners approved a location agreement allowing film crews for the movie “Southpaw” to shoot a scene inside the Indiana County Courthouse. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as troubled boxing champion Billy Hope,
Filming was to take place in a cell in the sheriff's department on the third floor of the courthouse after business hours on June 27.
“This particular agreement is one regarding something that we don't have happen in Indiana County, let alone the courthouse, very often,” Ruddock said. “In fact, I don't know that we've ever had this in the courthouse. It has to do with Indiana County taking on a new role as a host (for filming a movie scene).”
The brief scene in the courthouse stars Gyllenhaal and the actress playing his character's daughter.
“It's really a story about fighting, a lot of it's fighting outside of the ring,” said Drew Nicholas, assistant manager for site selection for Hope Films Inc. “This scene is a crucial scene linking him to his daughter and the struggle that's going on in the film. It's kind of getting closer to a lower point and, as much as I would, I don't want to give too much away. I have a tendency to give away endings, so I'm just going to leave it there.”

Another Demolition/Jake mention in a story about the producers.

Hi, Hagen! Croatia! I've never been there, but it looks lovely! That's one of the film sets for Game of Thrones!

That list of artists who've been invited to join AMPAS had some surprises. I can't believe David Strathairn just got an invitation. He's a superb character actor and has been around for years.

Then I see they invited Chris Rock & Jason Strathan. Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just recently learned that you have to be invited by an existing member to join AMPAS, like a godfather. So, I wonder if Jake was the one who invited Dennis.

    Jason Strathan: probably stallone

  64. Good article about the Luckinbill brothers (Demolition Man). Thad was on the Young and the Restless, he certainly has come a long way from being Victor Newman's son in law. I remember the 60 minutes segment on the Lost Boys of the Sudan but I don't recall a particular female helping them, it was more about the young men being left on their own to navigate the US but they has a network of people to help such as churches and social workers. The story and the boys did stick with you though.

  67. TO anon at 10:27:

the project involving Jake in the lead and Luckinbill brothers as producers has nothing to do with Stallone's poor Demolition Man. It's called "Demolition" and it's about a man losing his wife who starts "demolishing" his life to find a meaning.

Just spent an hour watching Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and Fifty Cent shooting a very intense scene in the lobby of our hotel. It made me laugh when they paged, "Mr. Cent to set, please!"

    LOL.

It makes me nervous that 50 is in serious scenes.

"Finally home @430 am off set, its amazing to watch and listen to real directors and big screen actors work togeher to capture all it takes to pull together a mind blowing scene. Director antoine fuqua is the most physical director ive seen in person to date and his direction was matched by actor director jake gyllenhaal and many more including curtis jackson aka 50cent, whos the coolest most chill guy youll ever meet but as we all know can turn it up on camera. The longest day of the week for sure, but inspiring beyond words. I'm a firm believer that there's no teacher like field experience and a large number of people including myself were in the front of the class last night. — with Nick Balzer and 3 others. "

Should not be as Mr. Jackson has gotten favorable reviews for some of his roles. TO me Fifty seems more realistic in a boxing film than Jake himself.

  93. ^Me again: Jake's looking hot and tough on the billboard. Imagine all the teasing promotional pics next year!
"Southpaw" is going to be Jake's movie, THE movie. We know he can look the part, be it a marine, cop, detective, ex-convict or boxer. Prisoners or End of Watch stand proof that he's a hell of an actor. He can bring intensity, anger and vulnerability in one scene. Southpaw is Billy Hope's story, everything revolves around him, meaning Jake may be in 99% of the scenes. 50 Cent as the promoter is only part of Billy's glory days and maybe part of the comeback fight. But there's another part of the story, maybe more challenging: the downward spiral, where Jake will play despair, guilt, booze and drug addiction, conflict with the daughter and Titus the trainer. Raw physicality (boxing scenes) + intensity (conflict scenes) + detail and subtlety (addiction scenes) could make for the best performance.

Looking closely at the billboard pics and the one from last night, I spy with my little eye....a prosthetic piece on Jake's nose. I may be totally wrong, could be the angle, but it wouldn't surprise me, he's playing a boxer after all and Jake always adds something specific to his characters.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Funnny you should mention it, Anon. I was telling some friends recently that I was worried about that very thing ever since I saw that he would play a boxer. I HOPE it's a prosthetic, and not a real broken nose. I don't want anything to happen to that face, that nose, that jawline, etc., etc., etc. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  95. ^ No way, far from my mind! When accidents happen on set there's a lot of press. Remember Nightcrawler? Jake's hand injury became some sort of publicity for the movie. Secondly, Jake's been on Southpaw set every shooting day. A real broken nose doesn't heal quickly. I've seen pics with Jake last couple of weeks in Indiana. Blurry, but you can see his perfect nose:
    Sean Zimmerman @Zimmerman4221 Jun 24
@IUP_Confessions I met both Rachel and jake. Jake is the guy in the black hoodie. Cool ass dude pic.twitter.com/dgIQVyvBsT

I was talking about - possibly - a subtle prosthetic piece at the bridge of his nose. Many boxers have had broken noses, maybe Jake decided to make his look more "authentic". Or I'm just seeing things.
Anyway, he looks hot on that billboard.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Me again: Pittsburgh is on fire with the NYC/MSG make-up and Jake's face on the marquee. People are tweeting up a storm. Funny thing is tonight they're shooting the charity gala scene, not the MSG big fight, since it's been shot last week in Indiana. Movie magic indeed.

A better version of the billboard

makes me think my eyes were deceiving me: straight nose, no prosthetic, but check out the pecs! :D

    http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/rachel-mcadams-jake-gyllenhaal-party-dance-with-southpaw-cast-2014107

On October 16 will be the turn for “Nightcrawler” with Jake Gyllenhaal, who will arrive in Rome to present it, as well as the cast of "A Most Wanted Man", the latest film starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose memory will be honored by Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and Daniel Bruhl.

    Another night in 'Southpaw'

by CARL KOLOGIE on July 13, 2014

It could only happen in the movies.
And I really can’t reveal that much about the situation, due to the confidentiality clause everyone signs, but it was a very entertaining evening.
It started with a call last week from a Murrysville friend who invited me to be an Auberle guest for an evening of filming of the movie “Southpaw” at the Weston William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.
Bob Johnson knew I had worked as an extra for two weeks when the film was being made in Indiana at the KCAC and I had secretly vowed that my movie career was over, along with the long hours involved.
But this was a little different as the production crew of “Southpaw” had approached Auberle, a faith-based Catholic agency that assists troubled children and families, and requested the use of their facility in McKeesport as a filming site.
In return, approximately 100 members of Auberle and their guests would serve as extras during the filming of the gala in the beautiful ballroom at the William Penn on Grant Street.
Suffice to say, I was much, much closer to the stars of the film that the role portrayed as an extra in Indiana.
From my seat at the table on the podium I saw several other extras who had worked at the KCAC.
The elegant ballroom was the perfect venue for dinner and dancing scenes portrayed inside a casino, and all the stars of the film were there including Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachael McAdams and rapper 50 Cent.
And even though I didn’t get back to Chestnut Street in Indiana until almost 4 a.m., it was an evening to remember.

    ReplyDelete

Filming for boxing movie moves into Carrick

    July 16, 2014 7:16 PM

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — New graffiti is appearing on businesses on Brownsville Road in Carrick, but this is nothing to be worried about. It was put there by film crews working on the boxing movie “Southpaw,” which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, 50 Cent and Lupita Nyong’o (??). The goal is to make this corner of the Pittsburgh-area look like the Bronx in New York City.
“We’ve done a lot of research with wallpaper paste,” the film’s art director, Greg Weimerskirch, said.
The crew has also added security doors and switched out some street signs. And the crew is promising to clean and freshen up paint before they move on.
That is not the only way “Southpaw” has left its mark on Pittsburgh. Last week, filmmakers transformed the former Saks Fifth Avenue building downtown into the front of Madison Square Garden. There were even New York police cars and taxi cabs.
The film is shooting in Pittsburgh through early August.
