Highway to Oscar?

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto shared the screen in Highway, a straight-to-video road trip movie that tracks Pilot (Jake) and Jack (Jared) on the run from goons and towards Seattle. And now they share the cover of The Hollywood Reporter's Actors issue, kicking off the magazine's awards season series on filmmakers in the Academy's sights.

The unconventional movie never made it to theaters and was picked by Entertainment Weekly as Jake's worst movie. As Jake and Jared celebrate and discuss more critically acclaimed roles, you have to wonder if they did any reminiscing. Or if they will be celebrating their nominations in a few months…

For a preview of the episode, check out IHJ. For the back of Jake's head, taken by Jared Leto, look here:

The Hollywood Reporter has done well by Jake fans recently. Here's the Q&A Scott Feinberg did with Jake last year:

  5. That was fun. It borders on pretentiousness at times: Josh Brolin, I'm looking at you. And that second THR reporter's big head blocked Jake in way too many shots. But I'm happy Jake was a part of it, and I think he was, too.

Jared Leto was the star of the discussion, I think. Makes you realize the value of life outside Hollywood. I wish they had talked about working together on Highway. Would love to hear what they think of that movie.

I also wish Jake didn't feel like he has to deny any negative feelings about doing 70 takes for Fincher. Or perhaps he's brainwashed himself into thinking it's okay.

  6. A dodge on PoP, as well. I wish Jake just faced the question head on. I guess he has some coming-to-terms work still to do. I was happy to see him admit that maybe EoW would have been better if he and MP didn't do all that prep work. I don't think it would have been, but it's nice to know he hasn't drunk the koolaid completely on the immersion approach.

The best parts are the intercuts from the photoshoot.

  7. Or perhaps he's brainwashed himself into thinking it's okay.

lol I don't understand why he keeps doing it.

Yeah, Jared was the best. Also liked the Michael B Jordan.

Matthew McConaughey continues with an annoying voice. His face is odd. I think it's because of the weight loss.
I saw Mud and he was ok, Tye Sheridan was much better.
    Good movie by the way.

  8. It's beautiful thing that Jake was once again with his co-star Forest Whitaker. Who can guess what masterpiece Jake and Forest co-starred?

Hint more people saw it then Highway. I didn't think Jared stood out more than the others in a good way but I do think there were too many clips of the Buyers Club interspersed hence the perception Jared and Matthew stood out more. I don't think all of them will get nominated for Globes or Oscars.

Maybe 2 at the most but I will not say what two. I also thought Jake, Forrest, Josh and Michael were genuine. I think Matthew and Jared were in what Matthew called acting mode.

    Just my unbiased opinion.

  10. Loving watching Jake's career path blossoming away from Hollywood and how hungry they are to have him back in any way, shape or form! Realist., I am racking my brains to try to remember a film Jake and Forest has starred in together and I am finding that I'm coming up blank! I have all of Jake's films apart from new ones not yet released and I don't remember them being together yet please could you put me out of my misery?

  12. Aha! of course it was. Quite iconic! I remember thinking at the time how wonderful it would be if Jake and Forrest work together what a powerful collaboration that would be. I still think Jake's best work is yet to come. I like that they put him on the top of the ladder and he looked the part of a director. But keep crafting out these fabulous understated roles and I hope he will get to that place where he's most comfortable to produce outstanding work.

  13. Thanks for the video UV, that was fun but yeah Josh was a bit much.

Highway is one Jake film I have yet to see. Jake looks good in the photoshoot and video but man Leto looks amazing ! He looks like he hasn't aged in ten yrs!

  19. A boxing movie? Sounds interesting. Nice to read that Jake is finally involved with a Weinstein project, too. : ) Funny isn't it? I remember when Jake made some random comment in an interview about boxing and it was a clue! Who knew! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well he does have the hands for it. I hope he signs on because apparently the story is really good.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Now we know, why Weinstein praised Jake's performance in "Prisoners". LOL
I guess Jake's part in "Southpaw" would require quite some time to prepare.

"Enemy" will be screened at the Stockholm Film Festival on November 14th-16th. BTW the film won't be eligible for the "Independent Spirit Awards" or the "Gotham Independent Film Awards" next year, since it isn't an American production.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Since both Jake and Denis have made it clear that even they do not know what Enemy is supposed to be, I now consider the movie an act of love by the film maker.

By Denis own words it seems the film was made because he needed to do it to move on in his career, to sort of cleanse himself and I think Jake was of the same mind of completing his cleansing which apparently began with EOW.

I don't think An Enemy was made for awards or even box office, it appears to have been a personal movie that Denis hoped others would connect with. A grown up "Donnie Darko". I hope Jake's role in the movie will become just as iconic as DD. We all know DD is still creating new fans.

  23. I loved watching that, interesting dynamics between the actors.

    The boxing movie sounds promising!

The story about Jake audtioning for Frodo in LOTR is too funny! Glad he bombed, can't see him as Frodo or any of the Hobbits.

  27. Not a fan of boxing movies, but it would be interesting for Jake to do a Weinstein Co. film.

Weinstein really tries a bit too hard to win Oscars (How to win an Oscar: "Zero chance of winning playing a sportsman or woman unless they are a boxer."(3 wins))

    Isn't Enemy half-American?

    It's a Canadian-Spanish co-production.

Independent Spirit Awards: My film is a foreign production but is in English and has lead actors who are American. Does this qualify as an American entry?
No. The Spirit Awards defines an “American production” as:
    A film in which U.S. citizens or permanent residents are credited in at least two of the following categories of responsibilities: director, writer, or producer. This can be fulfilled by one person with multiple duties or by separate individuals;
    OR
The film is set primarily in the United States and at least 70% financed by companies whose principal offices are in the U.S.

  33. Only had time to watch THR today, I definitely agree Jared was the star of the roundtable, Jake looked so good on those photos, but I didn´t feel he was true to himself.
Boxing movies, not a great fan , but absolutely loved The Fighter, I´d like to see Jake involved in something like that. Still haven´t watched Prisoners, it´s still hard for me to be in a movie theater.

  34. Paula C. it's so good to hear from you. I enjoyed The Fighter, too. I don't mind boxing movies at all, but I do mind movies about Mountain climbing. ; ) I have a fear of heights. I remember seeing "The Eiger Sanction" a few years ago, on TV and it was the most harrowing mountain climbing experience I can recall seeing on film. It ruined me. LOL!

I hope you get to see Prisoners at some point. Although, the subject is pretty scary.

  35. Hi Paula, I'm very glad to hear from you and hope you're making progress in your recovery. :-) "Enemy" is set to be released in Portugal in March or April 2014: "A estreia em Portugal está prevista para março ou abril de 2014, segundo informação da Zon Audiovisuais que vai distribuí-lo" (Fundação José Saramago). Jared Leto posted another photo.

The WSJ on the LACMA party:

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art's annual Art + Film gala, underwritten by Gucci, is quickly becoming one of the best parties of the year. That's why so many New Yorkers make the cross-country trek for it, enduring airport closures and the like—as they did on Friday—for this weekend's event, which raised over $4 million for LACMA's film initiatives and future exhibitions.

"It's a very New York party," observed the slimmer than usual actor Jake Gyllenhaal, as a waiter offered him a gougère. He declined.

"At least a lot of the New York crowd is here," Mr. Gyllenhaal added.

Among the power players that made the journey were Larry Gagosian; Jamie Tisch; Dasha Zhukova; W editor Stefano Tonchi; Harper's Bazaar editor Glenda Bailey; Martin Scorsese, who has been finishing "Wolf of Wall Street" in Manhattan and was honored for his c.v. as well as his work restoring many classic films; and Sting, who performed a set of greatest hits.

"I've never managed to write a song about Los Angeles," said Sting, as he delved into "Englishman in New York." "So I'm going to sing a song about the other side."

  41. I'm sorry to hear about your set back, Paula. At least you've found a hopefully helpful therapy.

Jake seems to be interested in the same kind of roles like Christian Bale. Bale starred in David Ayer's "Harsh Times", was originally set to play Detective Loki in "Prisoners" and Jason Clarke's part in "Everest" and now Jake is about to star in a boxing movie that reminds us of "The Fighter". Both actors seem to prefer raw and gritty movies.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Paula, I am so sorry to know you had a setback. Things are going to get better. Please know I'm thinking about you and your beautiful family.

Interesting observation, Hagen. : ) The only reason I ever saw Harsh Times was because CB was in it. Cop movie, graphic violence, Christian Bale's character spirals out of control. That's it. That's the plot.

  43. Paula I hope things get better for you soon.

  44. I haven't watched "Harsh Times" yet, bobbyanna, but your description of the plot doesn't sound very promising. LOL Judging by the trailer, Bale's latest movie ("Out of the Furnace") probably isn't right up my alley either.
Another similarity between Jake and Christian Bale: Both are willing to transform their bodies for film roles (Bale in "Hunger" is an extreme example). I wouldn't mind if Jake fell out of line and played let's say in a period picture. (To be fair a film like "Enemy" doesn't fit into that Christian Bale scheme either.)

  48. Projector Magazine gives "Enemy" a rave review (5 out of 5 stars): There are a few nasty things offered to us on a sliver platter here but nothing close to an answer. Enemy succeeds completely because of that, because of it’s stunted plot, it’s barren landscapes, it’s spare dialogue and probably, definitely, the greatest what the f**k ending of the last five years. It would even make Cronenberg pull the covers up over his head.

When Adam finds his absolute double playing a bit part in an independent film late one night he hits IMDB to track down the struggling actor.

In the book he spends a lot of time watching DVDs in search of the unknown actor. (The book was published in 2002.) Fortunately the story has been modernized.

  73. Oh, thanks for the link, Monica! So Jake will have some time to bulk back up. That's good.

He probably could have done Into the Woods, as well, given this schedule. But oh well.

In news closer to home, Jake will be in New York on Sunday, 11/24:

    SCREENING & LIVE EVENT
    Prisoners
    Sunday, November 24, 7:00 p.m.

With actor Jake Gyllenhaal, director Denis Villeneuve, and screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski in person

Maybe someone will finally ask the writer why he used the name Loki!

I've been wondering if Jake would be seen in 12/12/12, a documentary about the Hurricane Sandy relief concert:

Proceeds—$50 million that one night—went to the nonprofit Robin Hood Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. Apparently, unlike other disaster rescue efforts one has heard about, monies were expeditiously dispensed into the hands of the victims. Plus, it’s a real kick to see Martha Stewart waiting a little impatiently for the lights to go on as she works the phone bank. Or to catch the offhand remark from Jake Gyllenhaal as he hands off his incoming call to a colleague: The person on the other end has never heard of him.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hello babblers, just want to let you know that I saw prisoners yesterday, loved it, i was literally at the edge of my seat. Great performance by Gyllenhaal, it's funny when I saw the trailer I thought Hugh would stand out with his performance, but now I think it was a good one but a little over dramatic, instead Jake´s detective Loki has this understated deepness to his character, the eye blinking, the way he moves, looks, talks is oscar deserving!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Paula, I'm glad you had the opportunity to watch "Prisoners" and loved it as much as I did.

According to Cinemablend "Prisoners" was originally rated NC-17, but was re-rated R before it actually hit theaters.

The DVD / Blu-ray will contain two bonus features:
Prisoners: Every Moment Matters - Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal explore the tense relationship between Keller and Loki.
Prisoners: Powerful Performances - Get up close and personal with this all-star cast

He probably could have done Into the Woods, as well, given this schedule.

Jake dropped out of "Into the Woods" because of "Nightcrawler" (The Wrap). (Chris Pine was already on the set of "Into the Woods" on September 25th.)

I wonder if Jake will dye his hair blonde for "Everest" (Scott Fischer).

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oh, I know that's why he dropped out. But I think Everest was slated to begin sooner, so they had to fit Nightcrawler in.

I really hope there's something else besides those two bonus features. The interviews are probably stuff we've already seen. I was hoping for Jake/Denis commentary.

Paula, I'm so happy you got to see Prisoners and enjoyed it. Yay!

    ReplyDelete

  79. Variety: Gary Ross (“Pleasantville” and “The Hunger Games”) on Denis Villeneuve, Director of "Prisoners"

It's hard to feel more agonizingly tense than you do while watching Denis Villeneuve's “Prisoners.” I saw it alone and hugged my kids the minute I got home.

It's fashionable to dismiss “suspense films” as a lesser “genre,” but many are their directors' masterworks: “The Shining,” “Rosemary's Baby,” “Alien,” of course “Psycho.” Hitchcock never won an Oscar, but it wasn't long before Truffaut was writing a book about him.

There is a methodical pace, a stillness, a bleak, spare landscape whose brown and frozen palate is so undesigned it deconstructs the very idea that you are in a movie. In fact, there is so much arresting restraint in ”Prisoners” that the “filmmaking” falls away, and soon you are fully immersed in the nightmare of this small American town. Roger Deakins' work is remarkable.

It isn't so much about the banality of evil as it is the evil of banality. This could be you or me or anyone or anywhere. It's the plausibility of the premise, the ease with which this nightmare unfolds that plunges you headlong into it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. “Prisoners”
Aaron Guzikowski's original script is being praised for its twists and turns, and director Denis Villeneuve (the Oscar-nominated “Incendies”) delivers a tense mystery-thriller that keeps audiences guessing. But it also features an ensemble of fantastic actors giving it their all. Hugh Jackman is heartbreaking as the determined father of a missing girl who resorts to kidnapping a suspect — in a less crowded year, he would be a lock for a lead actor nod. Jake Gyllenhaal is impressive as the detective who both argues and empathizes with the distraught parents, and the fact he's being campaigned in supporting makes him the best shot for an acting nomination from an ensemble that includes Maria Bello, Terrence Howard and Viola Davis. While not always easy to watch, the film is bold and uncompromising — a thriller for adults that never insults its audience. — Jenelle Riley
