Hello, Jake!

Edited to update the post with a few pics of Jake and Jamie Foxx from Jamie's pre-Grammy party last night in L.A.

My, what long fingers you both have!

Look who's emerged: Jake Gyllenhaal, photographed on Friday in Beverly HIlls. To see a clip and hear the vidiotic pap questioning, click here or in slightly larger size here. In lieu of photos, I was going to post some not-very-good screen shots, but Stephanie has uploaded the pics!

"Jake Gyllenhaal went to the doctor in Beverly Hills and gets noticed by a fan in a van. Jake is looking good!"

FYI, there's a mini-trove of Jake videos (Oscars, SAG Awards, premieres) at CNN. Unfortunately, I can't download them or embed them, so you'll have to search at the link.

Not every video works, sadly. But many do, including one from the Rendition premiere, where Jake playfully accuses a reporter of "leading the witness." And my favorite, from the Moonlight Mile premiere, where Dustin Hoffman and Jake do their trademark combination flirting/fighting banter. Check them out when you have some time. And if anyone can rip/save them, let me know!

Someone on IHJ mentioned a video clip of Janet Jackson on the Jonathan Ross show from May, 2004. Jake was apparently on that episode. He appears at the beginning and end of the two Jackson clips. So this goes on the list - with the old Ellen, Jay Leno and David Letterman appearances - of missing Jake interviews.

No, not the REM album. Instead, it's this compilation of Jake interview answers that represents GyllenBabble at its finest. The article makes it seem as if it's a new, individual interview, but most of the questions are clearly from that New York press conference, others from TV interviews. We've read most of it before, but the "new" material is priceless, even if some of it is clearly taken out of context or badly paraphrased!

JG: “[Waving his hands around] Hi! I hope you don't mind but I get really animated!”

Q: Not at all, go for it. And what was with your look?

JG: “You mean in the movie, or in reality? Sorry, I have no concept of the difference between movies and reality!”

Q: Well, have you seen the movie?

JG: “Yes, Twilight. God, I loved that movie! (Laughs) No, I was just saying that, because it's the thing of the moment! Yeah, I'm up on stuff. But what did you want to know?”

Q: So how did the theme of this film resonate with you?

JG: “Which one? Sleeping with your brother's wife?!”

Q: The brother thing.

JG: “Wow...Well, I don't have a brother. Thank god! I do have a brother-in-law now, But that would be weird, because...anyway!

Q: How do you feel about what’s happening?

JG: “I still have great faith in our president. And I believe that he'll make the right choices.

Q: What about that scene where Tobey wrecks his kitchen, did you all need some decompression time after that, or did you laugh about it?

JG: “Well, the making of a movie is always full of its own odd moments. And when somebody breaks a cabinet in a movie, and has an intense moment, you have to go and put everything back in. And that's what I love about movies. So that's just the great fun and irony of movies. That people are made to look like idiots!

Q: So how did the prison system change your life?

JG: “I mean, you make movies, and so much is about this process now. You know, selling a movie. Or making it look good for an audience, or whatever. And the special moments that happen in movies, are the lessons that every movie has, for everybody involved in it. And I went through a journey in the prison system. But look, I don't know how it can't change your life when you meet a kid, who the day before was sentenced to life. And whose girlfriend had to testify against him. So I don't know how you could be breathing, and not have something like that change your life. Like they get one hour outside a week, and they're fourteen years old. It's now changed to an hour a day, but it was an hour a week when I got there. That is not to say that they've done perfect things. But it is to say that it can't not change my life. And another kid, Jim ended up putting in the movie. And another kid with the LA Conservation Corps started telling us all these stories, and they were unreal. To me. Like hiding meth in the back of a lamp of a four-wheel drive vehicle, driving over the border. And he was sixteen years old. And he told these stories like he was Homer. They were literally like tales. But he's changed his life. He's actually working now in the governor's office in Sacramento. So it's those things. It's like you look at a movie and go, yeah. It's a movie. But that's the stuff that I care about. So anyway. that's all!”

Q: How about the chemistry between you and Tobey, can you talk about that?

JG: “I think our relationship existed before we started shooting. With someone who is your contemporary, there's bound to be that. You are brothers in arms. There is admiration, and competition. A mixture of all of those things, and a confusion of all of those things. And the belief in yourself over them, and their belief in them over you. Your love for them, your want for their success. Your struggling for that. All of those things exist. I mean, I could go on, with a list of contradictions. And that exists between two people who do the same type of thing, in any job. So we just had to kinda show up, and it was there. But it was just easy.

This doesn't have a connection to the interview, but I thought it was a beautiful scren cap:

Play Date

Apparently in May, you will be able to play with your very own miniature Jake Gyllenhaal dolls - in the form of Prince Dastan, of course. There are three versions so far. Let's see how they stack up against the real thing.

First up, Warrior Dastan:

Then Desert Dastan, four inches and Desert Dastan, six inches.

Every hero has villains - in Dastan's case, the Hassansins. The Lead Hassansin and then the Hassansin with the best name - Human Porcupine Hassansin!

There are also box sets but no pictures of those yet.

So who's your money on - the Warrior or the Hassansin? And whom will you spend your money on!

Don't forget - the Red Cross appeal for Haiti:

Two Heath

I started to do a black and white montage for this sad anniversary, but then thought it would be more fitting and more uplifting to see Heath's beautiful, mischievous smile. I hope he is resting and smiling in peace.

Here's the Red Cross ad appeal for Haiti:

Party pics

Update: Jake Gyllenhaal with Jerry Bruckheimer at the Los Angeles Kings/San Jose Sharks game on Tuesday, January 19:

Jake and Jerry chat with Vince Vaughn:

A few more shots of Jake attending the CAA pre-Golden Globes party on Friday night at the Buffalo Club.

Figured I'd gussy up this post with some old Jake photos I hadn't seen before. The first two are from 2005, Jarhead and BBM promotion time, maybe in Toronto?

The second one is from an interesting French interview focusing on Jarhead. I think Jake says he became an actor because when he was young, he was put in a cage and fed peanuts. Hee. Again, any French help is appreciated.

This one is from the site for Johan Bruyneel, who was the director of Lance Armstrong's Tour de France team in 2006, the year Jake went along for the ride:

According to E!, Jake will be at the telethon for Haiti being organized by George Clooney:

Other mega-celebs who will present and/or help in the phone banks are Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brad Pitt, Anna Kendrick, Sandra Bullock, Zac Efron, Bradley Cooper, Renée Zellweger, Chris Pine, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Colin Farrell, Jon Hamm, Gabby Sidibe and Emily Blunt, among many others.

Hope they raise a lot of money - the situation in Haiti is dire.

What do you get when you cross...

According to Jake Gyllenhaal, this:

The folks at Gemma Arterton Online have scans of a Prince of Persia preview from the French magazine Studio Ciné Live. Their 20010 preview issue highlights three of the PoP principals: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton.

Jake is described as an actor at the top of his game. And Jake describes the Prince:

"Dastan est un mélange de Rafael Nadal, de Mick Jagger et de Denis la Malice."

Someone really needs to do a morph of those three and Jake!

More on Dastan: "Il accumule les bévues, il pense qu'il a toujours raison, il est sarcastique, pince-sans-rire et surtout tres insolent."

Rough translation: "He makes mistakes but always thinks he's right. He's sarcastic, deadpan and always very arrogant."

I love that description! I think Jake then goes on to talk about how this is what he wanted to do as a kid, and also about all the training he had to do.

Paging Lemon or other French-speaking GBers. I can get the gist of most of it, but I don't want to try a real translation! not that we'd expect anyone to do that, either. But if you see something amusing or noteworthy, let us know.

I think Gemma describes a scene where Dastan warns her not to cut herself, and she did just that.

From Jake's newest movies to one of his first, A Dangerous Woman. This clip showed up on youtube, and I don't think I've ever seen it before. Jake's definitely in young punk mode!

There's a quick snippet of Jake at that Maui Film Festival at the end.

If you can stand the cacophony and the inanity, there's a very brief snippet of a very smiley Jake attending the CAA pre-Golden Globes party:

Peter and Maggie are listed, as well, but I couldn't take watching the whole video! Jake appears about two minutes in:

Yup, wearing The Jacket again :)
